phat linux

2002-09-24 Thread Amir Tal

a thought regarding tommorow's event :

i was thinking that maybe we should also try an additional installation
method for new users.
i am guessing that there will be people that will be afraid of data losses
etc, and after reading an artice about phat-linux, i thought that maybe this
can be optional.

the article can be found at :
http://newsforge.com/newsforge/02/09/23/1917204.shtml?tid=23

basicly, its a distro that runs on top of windows.

did anyone ever try it?
several "issues" here :

1) runs on windows 9.x , not 2k, not XP.
2) hebrew - supported ? couldnt tell... how hard will it be to implement
hebrew support there ?

3) it includes some of the most basic and common applications a newcomer will
look for... a quote from the article :
"Phat comes with the usual programs, including Mozilla, Gnome, a CD player,
office software, GNU C Compiler, an address book, IRC client and much more.
It kept me busy for hours just pointing and clicking."

should we suggest it to users as an option ?

ccache

2002-09-27 Thread Amir Tal

hi,

i am not a developer.
actualy, i cant code at all.
the only thing i am doing as far as compilation, is to compile some of my own
applications, and rebuild kde from cvs every few days.
i am building kde on a P4, 1.5Ghz, 780MB of ram, and since i am updating most
of the modules, it takes a lot of time.
recently, i saw something about ccache. i've read the documentation, and
downloaded the latest ccache (1.9). its installed, but before i'll try using
it, i was wondering if anyone has any expirience with it, compiling large
ammounts of code, and if there's anything i should know (other then what the
howto states)

all comments are welcomed.

thanks,
tal.

" ccache is a compiler cache. It acts as a caching pre-processor to C/C++
compilers, using the -E compiler switch and a hash to detect when a
compilation can be satisfied from cache. This often results in a 5 to 10
times speedup in common compilations."

read about iptables. here's the howto :
http://www.telematik.informatik.uni-karlsruhe.de/lehre/seminare/LinuxSem/downloads/netfilter/iptables-HOWTO.html

sure.
you are provided with an external IP (as well as internal to the cables
network). check out www.dyndns.org for dynamic dns services for your machine
(you are not getting a fixed ip with the cables with most ISP's, i think some
do provide it thoughactcom IIRC)

XF86Config problem

2002-10-07 Thread Amir Tal

this is mandrake 9, fresh install .
my card is NVidia GEforce MX. everything worked very nicly after installation.
i rebooted the machine today, and X will not load. it complains that "no
screens found", which is kinda redicules since i didnt change anything in the
config file, and didnt change anything in my hardware since the last time it
worked.

the only modifications i did was to add the "load glx" option for 3d support,
and changed the driver name from "nv" to "nvidia" (had to do that for playing
quake ;)

the only way to load X now, is to change it back to "nv" and to disable glx
support.
NVidia drivers are installed (from the nvidia website) and the NVdriver module
is loaded.

XFree version is 4.2.1

my XF86Config-4 is attached.

nvidia problems

2002-10-09 Thread Amir Tal

gang, you are my LAST hope.

i know I'm a lazy ass (most of the times) but this time i really did some
heavy reading and googling. came up empty.

XFree 4.2.1, GEforce II MX.

i installed (for some weird reason) mandrake 9 on my test machine to play
around with, and the nvidia card is giving me a hard time.
GLX and the nvidia kernel are compiled and installed, NVdriver is loaded.
if i change in XF86Config from "nv" to "nvidia" and uncheck "load glx" i get :

(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"
Using vt 8
(EE) NVIDIA(0): no HorizSync values remaining
(EE) NVIDIA(0): No modes remaining for Display Device 0
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

if i change it back to "nv" and disable glx, everything works normally (x
loads, no 3d support)

tried to check it out at #nvidia, but all i got there is a bunch of smart
asses who told me to look at the logs and RTFM.
do you know why this is happening ? is this a mandrake 9 issue, or am i
missing something basic here ?

bttv and emu10k1

2002-10-11 Thread Amir Tal

hi,

i am using bttv with my FlyVideo II TV card, under mandrake9 (decided to play
with it for a while, i used debian until not to long ago..).
its mandrake's default kernel (2.4.19-16mdk).
i had a SB128 sound card until 2 days ago (es1371) and it worked fine.
yesterday I've purchased SB Live! (emu10k1) and the problems started :
the default bttv driver (in mandrake's kernel) is loading, but i cant get any
reception (no channels are displayed, even when scanning). i tried to compile
and install the latest bttv driver, and after it loads, all it displays is a
blank screen (both in XawTV and Zapping).
are there any known issues with bttv and emu10k1 ?

here are some of the settings :

# lsmod |grep bttv
bttv 66880 0 (unused)
i2c-algo-bit7432 1 [bttv]
videodev5792 2 [bttv]
i2c-core 15332 0 [bttv i2c-algo-bit tuner]
soundcore 3780 0 [bttv emu10k1]

# cat /etc/modules.conf |grep bttv
options bttv radio=1 gbuffers=4 card=19 tuner=5 pll=1

card model :
02:09.0 Multimedia video controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt848 Video Capture
(rev 12)

when modprobing for bttv, it loads with no errors.

thanks,

whats included in 2.4.x kernel is NOT the latest. its ALWAYS recommanded to
get the latest software and compile yourself, specialy with "problematic"
hardware.

what applies for those card's are card=19 and 25. (19 for flyvideo98, 25 for
2000). none of those worked for me.
it has something to do with the emu10k1 module, because it worked fine with a
soundblaster 128 (es1371).

i still didnt figure out what it is though...

yes, i know, i am 30 years old - so what ?
i must admit that Quake III Arena and Unreal 2003 really grubbed me, and as a
person that didn't spend to much time with computer games, i am finding
myself in front of those games for hours...and hoursand hours.
anyway, the question's are :

1) are there any people on this list that play online a LOT in the mentioned
games ?
2) are there any severs in Israel for quake\unreal\ anything else similar.
3) if the answer is "no, but we wish there were", i am interested in setting
up a public game server...anyone else interested in helping ? (hardware,
hosting, maintenance etc...)

http://www.evil3d.net/articles/linux/howto/nvidia/redhat71/?page=5.php3
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/hardware/hgforce.html

basicly, it will not relay on the monitor to supply the refresh rates
information.
this is happening when using a "plug and play" monitor type in XF86Config-4,
and not specifying a monitor type. XFree cannot actually tell which monitor
you are using, and will relay on getting the refresh rate information from
your "Device" section - your graphic card.

this process is being done as a part of the debian.org.il facelift. visit the

longhorn's winFS, what about linux ?

2002-11-24 Thread Amir Tal
i've seen a lot of feedback on the net lately on winFS (the new filesystem MS
are going to use in their next version of windows, codenamed longhorn.)

Longhorn will include a database-like file system called Windows Future
Storage (WinFS), which is based on technology from SQL Server 2003
(code-named Yukon). This file system will abstract physical file
locations from the user and allow for the sorts of complex data
searching that are impossible today. For example, today, your email
messages, contacts, Word documents, and music files are all completely
separate. That won't be the case in Longhorn.

i was wondering if there's any intention to try and implement something
similar in linux, and if there are any advantages to this technology that
justifies the effort.
I'd like to review this issue in whatsup.org.il, and your
thoughts\comments\opinions are highly welcomed here.

good thing ? bad thing ?

mozilla's mouse pointers

2002-11-28 Thread Amir Tal
hi,

i've became i big fan of tab browsing ever since i started to use kde from
cvs. since i am leaving the country in a few weeks, i had to sell all of my
computers, and i am now using an old Toshiba laptop (300 Mhz) which makes
compiling kde a living hell. so for now, i am using the latest stable release
of kde , which does not support this feature.
as an alternative, i've started to look into mozilla lately, which has tab
browsing support. i've never been a huge mozilla fan (i'm a konqi kinda guy)
but i have to admit that its a nice browser. the only thing i hate about it
is the mouse pointers (specially that ugly hand pointer when pointing over
links) and i was wondering if there is a way to replace those pointers with
the default kde pointers. browsing through the menu's in mozilla and googling
for an answer didn't tell me much...
using mozilla 1.1.

help...?

what version are you using ?
i am using 3.0.4 and i dont think there is an option (like in knode, for
example...) but i do believe that it was added to CVS and will be included
in 3.1 final (check the kde archives, i saw something about it last week..)

yes, it didnt matter much. like i said, i added Option "SWCursor" "True" to

alsa configuration

2002-12-23 Thread Amir Tal
so i've decided not to let my tecra8000 laptop get away with it, and to give
one last effort to making the sound work (which did work a few months ago
with mandrake 8.2 and 2 years ago with windows.)

machine : toshiba tecra8000
running kernel : 2.4.18-bf2.4 precompiled.
sound chip :(YMF715E or YMF719E)
loaded module : opl3-sa3

here's my lsmod :

# lsmod |grep opl

isa-pnp27400 0 (autoclean) [opl3sa2 ad1848]

here's the latest opl3 related dmesg entries :
# dmesg |grep opl
opl3sa2: No PnP cards found
opl3sa2: Search for a card at 0x1336.
opl3sa2: chipset version = 0x5

opl3sa2: Control I/O port 0x538 not free
opl3sa2: There was a problem probing one of the ISA PNP cards, continuing

and here's my modules.conf relevant entries :

alias synth0 opl3
options opl3 io=0x388

note - for some reason, there's no sound device displayed in lspci.

so the modules are loading with no errors in loading time, and dmesg seems to
recognize the device, but i cant get sound to work, not with arts, not with
alsa. (alsaconf says that it cant load module snd, and gives a bunch of ugly
debug info.)

HELP !

my fingers a bleeding from googling for information, and there's aint much
info about that damm piece of crup out there ! (that damm old laptop, i need
a new one!)

kde 3.1 RC5 menus

2002-12-24 Thread Amir Tal
i've upgraded to RC5 a few days ago, and i noticed that in some of kde's
applications there's a big mess in the menu's.
some of the menu's in Kmail are titled "no text!", and in konqueror, some
menu's are duplicated. also, there are some duplicated toolbar buttons.

does this have anything to do with the fact that the old qt packages were
upgraded (current qt is 3.1.0), and if not, what am i missing ?
i know for a fact that RC5 doesn't suppose to have those problems.

this will be weird, since i know of at least 2 people that are using the same
system as me (debian sid) and installed from the same source (using apt-get).
so unless this is a system-specific bug, i have no idea what can be that cause
for that...

if this is happening in previous (stable) versions of KDE as well, then we
must be doing something wrong here. i thought that this is an RC issue, and
the fact that i could not find anything about that in google and kde.org cant
be a good sign.

did anyone else experience this, and came up with a reasonable solution ?

RMS, IBM and whatsup.org.il

all,

we were contacted by IBM with a request to help them promote the RMS visit.
several other sites are also running a banner for those events (Ynet, Walla
and several others) but we were chosen as the official linux source for the
promotion, so we are representing the entire community by doing so.

feel free to click on the banner, its for a good cause, and will show a lot of
interest in the visit from a linux specific community, which is why they
addressed us in the first place.

my guess is a missing or incorrect "nameserver" entry in his /etc/resolv.conf

OT: U.S visa issues

2003-01-22 Thread Amir Tal
this is WAY OT, but i thought i should share this with this list, because i
know there are people here that travel to the united states from time to
time, not always for work purposes.

i am STILL in Israel. i was planned to departure more then a month ago, and it
seems that leaving the country is NOT as simple as some of you may think.
if you plan to go for a little trip, even as a tourist, with the full honest
intention to come back after a few weeks, you will actually need to provide
solid proofs for your intentions.. that includes :

* a letter from your current employer stating that you have a current place of
employment in Israel, and that your employer states that you have your job
safe and secure until you come back. (letter must state the length of the
trip as well.)

* pay slips. in many cases, the latest will do. i saw people at the embassy
that were asked for 3-6.

* a bank statement that proves you can afford your trip and expenses while you
are on U.S soil.

last week, i've spent almost 4 hours at the embassy waiting for an interview,
and almost 30 appliers before me got DECLINED ! most of them, young people
that just got out of the army, and wanted to go for a trip, but there were
also married couples, a business man (independent) that needed to go on a
business trip, and even 2 senior citizens. (what are they gonna do,
immigrate??).

just though this info might come in handy for some of you, in case you
*thought* to take a brake, and go for a trip to the land of (un)limited
possibilities.

BTW, this is old news, but very much related :
http://www.whatsup.org.il/article.php?sid=159

(both applications ended up being approoved.)

Microsoft's advantages

2003-01-22 Thread Amir Tal
how typical for them to take advantage of the ignorance of some unexperienced
readers, and come out with something like "we are not talking to our
costumers anymore about the disadvantages of linux, we are focusing our
arguments about our advantages over it". :)

http://www.whatsup.org.il/article.php?sid=882

quoting a line from the comment at the bottom of the interview :
"is this another attempt to take advantage of ignorance and lack of experience
from innocent readers?" i wonder if this is the new technique from now on...

linux events pictures

2003-01-24 Thread Amir Tal
hi all, (and sorry for the cross posting)

we are developing a new feature for whatsup.org.il that will operate as a
screenshot gallery (send'm if you got'm - [EMAIL PROTECTED]) and as a Photo
album.
the purpose of the album will be to display pictures from events, lectures,
insta-parties and all other linux\open source related events in Israel, in a
categorized, well organized and very user-friendly manner.
if anyone has any pictures from the IBM event (both days, RMS specially), the
raanana insta-party or the legendary august-penguins, or you can redirect me
to the person who has the pictures, please do so.
links to photographs on the web are also more then welcomed. please send links
only if YOU are the pictures owner, along with a message permitting me to
use\publish them.

we'll announce the new gallery in a day or two, when its ready to rock'n roll.
thanks,
