Re: SuSE - The Next "Default Linux"?
Well infact, until I tried Fedora I didn't understand what was going on. I think the issue is more complex that that. The server IT market looks like constantly shifting sand. I hope that Novell and IBM can improve SuSE I tried it a number of times, and found it to confining for me. The gui or else caught me to many times.. There are a lot of small players out there with a lot of good ideas Yoper, Xandros, etc. Diversity has been the curse of Linux, to many distros and lots of confusion, but at the same time variety is the spice of life. I see Linux distros popping up all over the place. I am using Fedora now and although not 100 percent pleased, I find it has taken over from RH 9.0 quite well and by using apt/yum it is quite a powerful option. Debian is still to much for hackers but that is slowly changing. So if you are used to RH I would say try Fedora, you will be comfortable and it is certainly more bleeding edge than RH was. Re: SuSE - The Next "Default Linux"?
I agree Fedora is a class project. Well all the above ideas plone iglu are cute for browsing for answers, but spontaneous anecdotal responses, I didn't get much of, like "I tried using app x with hebrew it displayed hebrew but bidi didn't work..." And since I didn't try all the apps out there I can't comment on all of them. That said the Iglu site is great for someone looking for basic hebrew support questions. Audio: I have had a ongoing struggle to get music notation systems to work with hebrew titles and lyrics, So far no gui editors do this although Note Edit claims it should be able to. The only music notation system that I have succeeded in getting to work with hebrew is called lilypond. At present it a hack only for titles and hebrew, hebrew support could probably be extended even further but from lack of need I never gave it much thought. example: text is entered for notation, the note names are a b c d etc. to create sharps and flats dutch note names are used, but others could be substituted. I could probably get the names to work with hebrew letters and hebrew note names, but since I am an english speaker, I didn't see the need.... Re: [JOB OFFER] Adwise Seeking - PHP Professional
Just to get into the fray a little, In the good old days when I was employed in Isreal, there were companies that asked for the resume in pdf. I would only send samples of my tech writing work in pdf. I have friends who made the mistake of sending in doc and found some of their work 'borrowed' into other companies work. The resume is a different point. When I create a CV, even if I have word. I would hesitate to send it in .doc format. First case example: The company is using an older version of Word (or a newer version) Second case exampte: The company is using hebrew enabled or hebrew native with english enabled. This is a great way to have someone see a sloppy CV. I know this from painful experience. I have sent 100's of CV's and some were turned down because of the sloppy formatting. These companies insisted I give them .docs. I infact opened the said doc files (created in MS Word) on other peoples computers and indeed depending on the type and version of Word the CV ranged from the way I intended it, to unadulterated Cr*p, pardon my french. Next example. When I worked in MediaOne no work was ever given to a Client in .doc format only pdf. PDF is not an extra loop it is a published e document in our day an age. You can make a pdf using any application and it will look the way you intended period. My advise is never submit an unpublished document to any company alway send a closed format such as pdf ( actually I also like ps) Aaron = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

One day he ran out of ink for his printer, that day he didn't delete the spam on printer ink and saved himself 65% of the cost of buying it here in Israel. So I guess for some spammers it is worth it, just a major pain however for the rest of us.. Re: no display
Well thanks, I often need to fix a readonly or system file and out of habit use gvim. Or I want to run Synaptic which I think needs me to be su. In Fedora, Redhat or Mandrake I never had this problem. This only happens in Debian/Xandros I am guessing that this is on purpose? You did catch that I was trying to run as root. I sometimes find that some tabs or addons to mozilla only will install if I (gasp) run mozilla as root. Indeed your solution works. I did think that I needed to run xev as root to see if the events were systemwide, maybe not. In either case thanks for all the quick responses. this pretty much solves this for me Nadav Har'El wrote: On Sun, Jan 25, 2004, Muli Ben-Yehuda wrote about "Re: no display": On Sun, Jan 25, 2004 at 01:07:01PM +0200, Aaron wrote: theone:/home/aamehl# xev Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified what does 'xhost' say? does 'xhost +localhost' or 'xhost +' help? be You may want to try "xhost +" and see if that helps (it should, if I understood your problem correctly), but PLEASE, don't adopt this as a permanent solution. It's a dangerous habit to get into. I am guessing that your problem is that your X Windows session is logged in as an ordinary user (your own account, aamehl), and you tried to run "xev" as root (judging from your prompt, "#"). You may be surprised that root can't do something that an ordinary user can, but X-Windows authentication actually works differently from the ordinary Unix permission model, because it is aimed to work across hosts, not just on one host. The usual X authorization setup (verbosely called MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1) is that the X server chooses a random string and puts it in a file in your home directory (~/.Xauthority). Now, every time you run an X Windows program it reads that string and sends it to the X server, as a proof it is running under your account (this file is unreadable to others). If you want to run X programs from other accounts (on this, or a different machine), including the root account, you'll need to transfer the authentication string, usually with the xauth(1) command. For root, there's an easier workaround: try running HOME=/home/aamehl xev which runs xev with your home (rather than /root) as the home directory. When xev starts, it reads your ~/.Xauthority, rather than root's, and finds the appropriate authentication string. This works because root can actually read your private files - it won't work for other users on your machine for which this file is unreadable. Hope this helps. = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This will keep all your variables, including the HOME (and the DISPLAY, if you have it). ok sound good I did think that I needed to run xev as root to see if the events were systemwide, maybe not. Indeed, you don't need to run it as root. As I explained, root has no special previleges when it comes to the X servers. The original user who logged in (assuing xdm is used, like is normal on all modern Linux distributions) has full priveleges over the X server, including watching the stream of X events (which is what xev shows you). Re: mysql hebrew
Hi all, Here is what I found in the msql docs: You can change the character set with the |--default-character-set| option when you start the server. The character sets available depend on the |--with-charset=charset| and |--with-extra-charsets= list-of-charset | complex | all | none| options to |configure|, and the character set configuration files listed in `SHAREDIR/charsets/Index'. See section 2.3.3 Typical |configure| Options <cid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. If you change the character set when running MySQL (which may also change the sort order), you must run |myisamchk -r -q --set-character-set=charset| on all tables. Otherwise, your indexes may not be ordered correctly. I am afraid that changing the character set will make the whold db hebrew, I want heb/english. Re: Article on YNet
Thanks for the translation, A few notes. 1. I infact agree with Dr Saur on a few points. Linux software is infact the same as commercial software and competes against it. Good software is good software and bad software is bad software. Part of what makes Linux good is a Unix way of doing things which Windows software will never have by definition. 2. Even if Windoze is indeed cheaper (He definitely didn't prove it) I would still choose the Unix way of doing things. 3. Windows is not a good OS for Servers and I am sure his numbers are wrong. But still 49% (2001 is a bit old new) means that the more servers run a non-windows os. Man that 49% has to be wrong, who in their right mind would run a Windows server for mission critical applications? 4. Plain math says that a linux distro cost less than windows. 5. I wonder if this guy work for a certain Washington State company? Aaron Illusions that are sold to you about Linux - By Dr. Robert m. Saur The appearance of Linux and other open source programs as serious candidates in the market of computation is an important phenomena. The challenge they pose to MS and other software manufacturers will lead to greater competition, which will yield utilities and improvements to any consumer, business or private. Still, the process of the entrance of Linux and other open source programs to the market is accompanied by strong dissonances, which only harm. Linux vendors have recently been trying to present an utopian picture, as if their merchandise is technologically perfect, and a sort of turn point in the human history in general and in the software market in private. It is an illusion. Open source programs are commercial programs in every aspect. They are characterized by a different commercial model, but like any software they have technical faults and merits. For competition to evolve, things must be presented as they are, and consumers must be allowed to choose based on real data and information. The year of Linux -- Thus, for example, Mr Horev, manager of Oracle Israel, calls the year 2003 (in an article recently published in Yedioth Aharonot): "For the first time since the entrance of Linux to the market over a decade ago, the system can be viewed as a cheaper and better alternative for Windows", he says. Mr Horev relates Linux's recent success to the commercial maturity this system has achieved, and to the fact that governmental systems all around the world have adopted it. The enthusiasm of Mr Horev from Linux is certainly understandable. Oracle, which made a large bet on the future of Linux (along with other software companies), has a clear interest in the matter as the vendor. But enthusiasm from Linux is one thing, and statistical proofs about the success of Linux is a totally different thing. As a matter of fact, after examining the data, the pink picture looks totally different. for example, let us examine the part of Linux in the global servers market. According to the research company IDC, on 1995 Linux's share was about 0%. By 2000 it jumped to 28%. But what has happened since then? Linux's share stayed more or less the same, and even dropped a bit. On the other hand, Windows's share in the global market of servers grew steadily in the said period: from 18% on 1995 to 49% on 2001. From the data it appears that Windows system does not lose height significantly. It seems that Linux entered the market at the expense of UNIX, much more than at the expense of Windows. Is Linux a lot Cheaper? - And what about the cost of Linux when compared to Windows? Is it not true that Linux is cheaper by far? Surprisingly enough, it is not necessarily so. the most reliable comparative cost review done so far (IDC's 2002 review) found out that the total cost of ownership of Windows is 11%-22% lower than Linux systems, according to the type of task, and only in one type Linux is 6% cheaper. Is the adoption of Linux by governments indeed so frequent, and does this signify technological superiority in any way? attempts to prefer open source as a rule by means of legislation have faced strong resistance and failed all over the world. In Israel, a law initiative on the subject by Kneset Member Nehama Ronen was overruled on this background. The state of Massachusetts has gone back on its intention to switch all the information systems to open source several days ago. It must be kept in mind, that governmental authorities are not always good at choosing the best companies in a competitional market, and they sometimes drag after passing fashions. The clerks of the ministry of finance, who have recently lead a public war against MS and for open source, have decided in the end to buy MS programs for full prince and continue to use them in the next years in all government ministries. Re: The Linux GUI crisis
my 2cents, >From my side, I see that much of the gui hype is just that. Very few users design the gui's out there. The idea of a gui that would change according to the user is a great idea. (everytime a user says *##* when a gui gets you angry. Most gui's are based on someones cute or neat idea, not usability I would think that the best gui's would be the one with the most user feedback. The applications that I can think of such as Ardour and Rezound have as do most open source projects a user mailing list which is where the users can react to the gui. unlike the big buck applications who support teams usually don't give the users the time of day. The maintainers of open source programs have the tools to make their gui's much better. And in the case of Ardour and Rezound and countless others these are often implimented immediatly. In the case of Rezound my computer illiterite son learned Rezound in minutes (he only reads hebrew btw). The program windows people love CoolEdit just drove him to tears. After my 10th power off in 3 days I am seriously looking to buy a UPS. I looked in the local stores in Rechovot and saw one for 500 shekels. Is the a problem using a UPS with linux? getting there?!
Hi I just signed up with Actcom for a fixed IP address and cable account. Now I am getting closer to hosting my site on my box. But am I? Some questions: How do I transfer the dns which is on my present remote server to my fixed ip address? Is there some howto that in simple language tells me what I need to get myself up and running. How do I test if my hardware is up to the task. I notice that when running apt-get my system gets very slow, and this holds true for other web application such as amule. Will my current distribution be good enough for this? (Xandros) And I am sure I will have many many more questions. But thanks to the list for your help and encouragement so far. I am sorry for the broken threads I will try to be a good boy from now on. at my wits end
Hi all, I have been using a webhost in the US. At first the service was good and now I don't get any answers for my service tickets. This is killing my chances of developing my project. I am it seems forced to look for a new home for my project. I will be hosting public domain audio files (ogg) format and music notatation as well as information about the songs. The host I have now gives me a linux hosting solution with 5 gigs of storage space, a mysql database, shell access plus a bunch of other stuff. For this I paid 80 dollars a year. This is open source but not specifically software related. I am building my project with plone/zope, python and lilypond. I am looking for some creative ideas for a new web host. I would just buy my own server but since I can't get my own IP address from bezeq (at least for a reasonable price) (am I wrong) it seems pointless. I am also looking for a way to avoid changing webhosts every year. Whats getting me is that my current host would be perfect if they gave service for their product. Re: redirect possible?
This is just a finger in the dike solution until I move to a different host or get a fixed ID. I have cable will it also be as slow? I found adsl to be much slower for the same speed than is cable. learning curve
Whew, A learning curve. I am considering either changing hosts for my web site or hosting the site myself on my linbox. I need some advice from the group on this. Switching to a permentant IP address with Actcom I will probably do anyways since it is cheaper than my current broadband package from bezeqint anyways. That said I am a bit concerned about the amount of time it will take to setup and maintain my site locally and the security issues of using my linbox for both a desktop and a server. On the flip side the webhosts that give enough storage space and root access, probably come with little installed to ease my site setup tasks?? Assumming I setup my own site what should I use to manage it? Is webmin the best/easiest to use and setup? for managing mysql I have phpmysqladmin on my remote site and find it very convienent, but am not finding setting it up or mysql so easy. Any advice on easing the transition would be most appreciated. Thanks Aaron = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: xmodmap
I can't seem to get it to work for me on Xandros. maybe you might have better luck. I thought xmodmap was the failsafe if no other way worked... truthfully I got this all working previously with help from the list, but I have searched the archives and can't seem to find the thread.
