my 2cents, >From my side, I see that much of the gui hype is just that. Very few users design the gui's out there. The idea of a gui that would change according to the user is a great idea. (everytime a user says *##* when a gui gets you angry.
Most gui's are based on someones cute or neat idea, not usability I would think that the best gui's would be the one with the most user feedback. The applications that I can think of such as Ardour and Rezound have as do most open source projects a user mailing list which is where the users can react to the gui. unlike the big buck applications who support teams usually don't give the users the time of day. The maintainers of open source programs have the tools to make their gui's much better. And in the case of Ardour and Rezound and countless others these are often implimented immediatly. In the case of Rezound my computer illiterite son learned Rezound in minutes (he only reads hebrew btw). The program windows people love CoolEdit just drove him to tears. The examples of poor Windows gui design matches the gui goofs of Linux but while good design principles are needed across the board the ability to listen is the most important of all....
