RE: Israeli spammers (Was: goldfish spamming)
Hi! There's some comfort hearing you're not the only one in this... :-) I also got spammed from FixFax a few days ago. As a persistent user of SpamCop (http://spamcop.net) I reported it and got the following reply. Since I'm not an expert on mail routings, settings, etc' , nor o I have the resources to get into this now, I simply settled in calling the actual spammer - FixFax. The man on the other line was polite but seems ready for such phone calls. guys - check this reply I got after sending my spamcop report: == >From an investigation of your report it appears that the mail was sent by accessing the Internet using an anonymous dial-up access provided via Bezeq, The Israel Telecommunications Corp. Ltd. This service, provided by Bezeq, allows the user to choose between a selection of licensed ISPs, who are under contract to Bezeq for this facility. Because of this you may find that the spammer is hitting you from a number of different Israeli ISPs. Bezeq are the only source of the information as to the exact source of who and where the access was made, i.e. identifying the telephone line from which the call was made. Bezeq are also the only people who, at this time can take direct action against the spammer. In order to possibly to get any effective action you should contact the following, one of who may take action: 1. The owner of the domain (fixfax.co.il)that was spamming its services at Phone +972 3 504-5885 or FAX +972 3 617-7100. 2. You could also contact the person who is listed as the contact for the company that hosts the DNS for this domain. (This person is also listed as the only contact for the domain fixfax.co.il.) This is Oved Blass([EMAIL PROTECTED]), Phone +972 3 652-0048, of nethost.co.il. 3. Ilya, I didn't try, but I will. However, the filenames seems to be in CP862 format (Aleph=128) and not ISO8859-8 (Aleph=224). Wow, this is detailed, and quite accurate, accessment of the situation. Do they have humans in spamcop.net doing this, or is it all done automatically? Anyway, if you actually want to complain to ISP about fixfax (rather then complain to, say, the police or reshut haganat hazarchan or something, since they are not an anonymous company!), here are the ISPs that fixfax used, to the best of my knowledge: [all this from my personal spam archive ;)] Dialup connections (through which the spam was sent. It could be that Windows doesn't consider those Hebrew filenames as Hebrew, but rather as some unknown language, and doesn't use the Bidi algorithm on them. RE: Israeli spammers (Was: goldfish spamming)
I little about this service I use (SpamCop): it is an automated service which I really dont know its usefulness, but I'm surely using them with EVERY spam I get. As just said, its an automatic process which when I send a complete email message (with headers - you can do this from outlook too) it parses that headers, query a little the net, including "talking" to ORBS (http://www.orbs.org ) and prompts me with conclusions about the spam - what mail servers the message passed along the way (stuff I never read carefully... :-) It then prompts me the contact persons it thinks I should send a "spam report" to - usually abuse@ or the like. then, with a simple click it sends a templated Spam complaint to the persons I chose (check boxes). The message I quoted in my last message is a reply got from the ISP contacted by my spam report - Goldnet. It seems quite detailed and surely a nice thing to get in reply (sometimes I get automated replies from ISPs ready for such spam report mails...). boaz. = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If that was a reply from Internet Zahav, it is detailed and accurate, but somewhat unfair and missing one important point: almost all of the spam was sent using their dialup account, and even if that was done through bezeknet (was it? Only one of the spams carried a bezeknet address) they should be able to either have bezeknet be accountable for its users, or filter port 25 for bezeknet users... Also, fixfax.co.il is running on a Internet Zahav connection. fixfax is almost certainly a heavy Internet user (since it's main business is sending faxes by email), and that is probably using Internet Zahav too (though I can't prove that). So Internet Zahav must have a strong leverage on stopping fixfax's spamming. If this guy spits in the well from which he's drinking (i.e., abusing Internet Zahav to spam when he depends on them for his business), he should be forced to drink it all :) Complaining to canada.com, for example, will do you no good: this spam invites people to see "www.fixfax.co.il". They couldn't care less if the reply address is cancelled, because they don't even want or need people to reply to the spam. In fact, he could use an address "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" for a reply address (see www.nowhere.com :)). What then? RH71 and Sendmail
Sendmail on freshly installed RH71 (2 machines) does not respond to connections: telnet MYIP 25 - Unable connect to host: connection refused. telnet 127.0.0.1 25 - getting a prompt. I don't have either ipchains/iptables active nor start sendmail through xinetd. netstat -nl: tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:25 0.0.0.0* LISTEN nmap does not shows port 25 open I do have resolving for my hostname through /etc/hosts. I even put a RELAY entry for my IP in /etc/mail/access file, though it is not related. It seems to me to be some firewalling problem, but i can not find any sign of firewalling on my system Any assistance would be appriciated, Evgeny = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This doesn't have anything to do with firewall, but rather a sendmail configuration option. Redhat decided (finally) that its default configuration should be made more secure, so by default sendmail only accepts connections. BTW, quoting http://www.redhat.com/support/manuals/RHL-7.1-Manual/ref-guide/s1-sendmail-changes.html, "Do not use Linuxconf to configure Sendmail! The Linuxconf module mailconf, designed to make editing /etc/sendmail.cf easier, is broken and contains out-of-date information about rule sets used in Sendmail configuration." (btw, I found this page by searching "7.1 sendmail" on redhat.com.) See the above site on how to configure sendmail. The line causing this problem is the following section in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc: dnl This changes sendmail to only listen on the loopback device 127.0.0.1 dnl and not on any other network devices. Comment this out if you want dnl to accept email over the network. For a home user, or someone that runs a standalone sendmail server that serves himself (or himself and 10-20 people), there is no added value from using the m4 macros, not only that, learning to find how to add new features or deal with existing ones with the macros for medium level sysadmins is a real pain. Thus, I believe that using vi in these cases is easier, and has no bearing on either ease of use or anything else. my 2 cents, --Ariel > You shouldn't edit /etc/sendmail.cf manually... I manage a sendmail server for a medium company (~200 employees). My experience (of several years and 3 generations of sendmail - I haven't installed the 8.11 yet) is that is easier to do the rough configuring using the macros, but fine-tune using sendmail.cf. There are some things you can not do with macros unless you change their source definitions which amounts to changing sendmail.cf by hand. The supposed benefit of using macros only is the easier move to new version of sendmail, but my experience is that you should save the old sendmail.cf and compare it to the new one. IT CAN SAVE A LOT OF TIME DEBUGGING. My "kingdom" includes 9 Linux's. 2 of them are configured as stand alone mail servers and are connected directly to the Internet. The other 7 (clients) uses our main mail server as relay. Whenever I install a new client Linux I just copy the sendmail.cf and change the hostname in it. Yes the site is down from yesterday night. You can ping it and see 100% loss. The ftp.kde.org is working because it linked to another server and its just a cname of the real server that KDE serves there ftp. Anti Aliasing @ KDE2.1.1
Hello, I recently installed anti aliasing here. it works pretty good, except one _big_ problem: KDE only shows my truetype/type1 fonts, so I can't use any "normal" font with KDE applications (ie. no helvetica font). I'm almost sure that tried everything. I recompiled X from the CVS tree, and recompiled qt 2.3.0 myself. Still - no luck. Now I know that the problem is in KDE, and not QT/X. When I start QT program (designer, for example) from another windows manager (i used blackbox) and set QT_XFT to true, I can see all my fonts, and the truetype ones are anti-aliased. When I start it from KDE, I can only see the truetype/type1 ones. I'm using slackware-current (glibc-2.2.2). I checked slackware's build scripts - KDE is compiled normally there, no special args etc. Sagi = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
