Then click on "Notenlesen", then on "Einzelnoten" and then on "Anfänger". Take the first studie "Zum ganz kleinen Test" and/or the second studie "Zum kleinen Test für Anfänger". Sorry, that this web-page is only available in german language, but if this is what You are looking for, I can tell You, how I did generate the .png's of the randomized notes, assuming You are using linux. Incorrect syntax.
Have a look at the documentation at 6.1.8 Transpose:
\transpose c g' \mykey
which means:
transpose from c to c' the music defined in \mykey

version 2.6.x for debian (unstable or sarge)?
Hi at all, during the last month's I wasn't able to work with lilypond. Now I think it would be better to update or new install 2.6.x or higher. But at lilypond.org I cannot see how to do so. :-( In the past it was Pedro Kroegers website, which contained the version I could install on my machine. But there still is only the older 2.4 version (from November 2004). Thanks for any hints. Yes, You are right, I reread Your E-Mail. Autopackage seems to be quite easy, I think. But during the install process I got the message, that I have to have a newer version of guile. And now there is a problem with installing guile 1.6.7. But this is not for this list. Meanwhile I did ask on my linux user group, and got some hints, but they were not yet successfull. using 2.8.1 I couldn't find out in the user archives how to get special
charakters like german ess-tzet (ß) in lyricmode.
In one answer-e-mail from Mats Bengtsson I could read the three forms
\ss \"s '\ss{}' , but all of them don't work on my system (debian-linux
with vim).

Hi list, firstly my gratulation to the new version 2.8.1-3 btw. 2.8.1-4. Installation is quite easy, and installation of the documentation too. :-) Now, because I've still a 56k modem, I would know about a possibility, not always to fetch the whole stuff, if there is a new version after fixed bugs (par example 2.8.1-4 after just having fetched 2.8.1-3, which takes the time of nearly three hours including the documentation). Something like #'height-limit for ties in 2.8.1?
Hi list, (version 2.8.1 on debian sarge) With \override Slur #'height-limit = #'3 it is possible to get a slur with higher maximum point. beatLength - bug in 2.8.2?
Hi,
what's the matter with beatLength in 2.8.2?
Trying to update the 13. Chopin Study on mutopia (which was still
typeset with 2.2.6) I found, that the setting for beatLength to quarters
in "\times 2/3" does no longer work.
I've tried to reproduce and demonstrate it with a very short example
containing four lines:
1. The first line shows with manual beam setting, what I want to get.
2. The second line shows the problem I have.
3. The third line shows the correct behaviour without "\times 2/3".
4. The fourth line shows, that the problem wouldn't exist, if I would have
to use beatLength for eight's.
This all works the same with 2.8.1, and it doesn't matter, if the line
for setting the beatLength is within the times brackets or not, and
further it doesn't matter if I outcomment the setting of the beatLength
to quarters, because this seems to be the default setting.
As far as I can remember, this did work correct with 2.6.x.

avoid-slur for ties
Hi,
using 2.8.2 avoid-slur for ties doesn't work.
In the "Program reference: Tie" there is described the same way as for
slurs.
For slurs it does work, but for ties not.
A very short example:

Maybe I'm understanding it not quite correctly (my English isn't very
good, so it's almost hard work for me to understand the documentation,
and sometimes (after reading for inspiration) I've success with try and
error).
In the case of avoid-slur I got the hint for this user-setable property
from a lilypond warning:
avoid-slur.ly:7:4: warning: Ignoring grob for slur. avoid-slur not set?

The simple code was:

So I read the documentation and was able to set some avoidings
concerning fingerings and staccato and so on.
For example, if I want slurs avoiding scripts, the following DOES WORK:
\override Script #'avoid-slur = #'inside
e4-^( f g f->)
so that the Script is inside the slur and not vice versa.
I only was irritated because of the following two reasons:
1. Why do I get the warning from above for marcato, but not for
accent?
2. This way I couldn't see the difference between #'outside and
#'around ...

I've regarded this, but in practice I got what I wanted to get, but for

(again?) beatLength - bug in 2.8.2?
Hi,
what's the matter with beatLength in 2.8.2?
Trying to update the 13. Chopin Study on mutopia (which was still
typeset with 2.2.6) I found, that the setting for beatLength to quarters
in "\times 2/3" does no longer work.
I've tried to reproduce and demonstrate it with a very short example
containing four lines:
1. The first line shows with manual beam setting, what I want to get.
2. The second line shows the problem I have.
3. The third line shows the correct behaviour without "\times 2/3".
4. The fourth line shows, that the problem wouldn't exist, if I would have
to use beatLength for eight's.
This all works the same with 2.8.1, and it doesn't matter, if the line
for setting the beatLength is within the times brackets or not, and
further it doesn't matter if I outcomment the setting of the beatLength
to quarters, because this seems to be the default setting.
As far as I can remember, this did work correct with 2.6.x.

You can try ... but You don't need ...
I'm quite sure this is a bug, and I wrote over this two times the last
week, but nobody seems to know an answer. So I was just thinking about
to send en e-mail again, as I saw Your question. :-)

A new tie-bug?
Hi,
using 2.8.2 I found a bad looking tie-end after using \tieDown for
octaves in the bass (needed par example for the left hand in the first
Chopin study Op. 10, No. 1, because of many notes for the right hand have
to appear in the bass.

octavation at line breaks
Hi, version 2.8.2 (How) is it possible to move the octavation line only AFTER line breaks? Sometimes there are in the following line fingerings and so on, which I want to have inside the octavation line, and moving the octavation line BEFORE the line break lets view the octavation line too high. Hi,
version 2.8.2:
In earlier versions it was possible to take little slurs over finger
changes instead of "-", with writing { "$\frown$" } in markup texts.
I can't figure out how to do something like this yet.
{ "$\frown$" } doesn't longer work ... :-(

Using version 2.10.9
I found a bug
concerning beams during staff-changes at PianoStaffs:
If the right hand has its notation in the lower staff, then do the beams
during \stemUp appear too high, exactly just before the next
staff-change will happen.
Stem-lengths seem to be normal, so the beams do also collide with
fingerings.
See the attached .ly-file.
In version 2.8.2 it worked fine.

After installing version 2.10.11 all beams in op 10 No. 1 are correct
again.
Unfortunately I found a new bug, which did still exist in version
2.10.9, but I'd not seen before ...
This bug has to do with the positioning of rests:
If the right hand changes down to the lower system, then rests do appear
UNDER the notes of the left hand.
Overriding rest direction has no effect.
The rest behaviour was correct in version 2.8.8 (and earlier).
A little example is in the attached .ly-file.
There is no converting necessary between 2.8 and 2.10 (only the version
number), so it is very easy to see the problem.

In the little attached .ly file it does work correctly, but if You
outcomment the alternative 2 and incomment the alternative 1, then it
doesn't.
In earlier versions (2.8 and earlier) there was no difference between
the two alternatives.
I'm nearly sure, this might be a bug.

Your comment: The voice containing the rests should have stems/stemdown set, otherwise lily will mess up with collisions, whether they contain rests or notes. I can't aggree with that for the following two reasons: 1. The piece, working on which I found this BUG, is Chopin's Study Opus 10 No. 1 in C-major. It contains 79 bars, and each second bar has this staff changing with holding the stems up. The edition from Herrmann Scholz, on which the mutopia contribution shall rely, has the stem direction I want as well as my edition from G. Henle, as well as my edition from Wilhelm Hansen, Kopenhagen. 2. In lilypond version 2.8 and earlier it was possible to notate as I'm wanting, so the newest lilypond version is a regress compared with earlier versions, and I'm insisting, that this is a bug. I think, such changings in the behaviour of lilypond shouldn't happen, because they are creating frustration for working on with lilypond. Why is the text shifted, when using \hspace ?
Hi list,
using crescendoText with a dashed line I wanted to put a bit more space
between the text and the dashed line with \hspace #1.
But then I found that the dashed line was shifted to the right as wanted,
but the text from the crescendoText was shifted also, upwards,
ca. .5 staff spaces, and this is, what I don't want.
Is this a bug or a feature, or what else am I perhaps doing wrong?

make-dynamic-script shows mysterious aligning behaviour

(using version 2.10.14)
make-dynamic-script is a nice feature, but there seems to be a bug, from
which I don't know, wether it is a lilypond bug or a font bug or
something like that:
If You have a crescendoText and then an own dynamic with normal text,
the dynamic will not align exactly with the crescendoText.
To make it more complicated, there is not the same behaviour
for all characters!
In the following I've listed the lower case characters, which show a
different behaviour (
1. with "?" they are aligned about .4 or .5 staff spaces
too high,
2. with "." they are aligned about .1 or .2 staff spaces too low,
3. and the one with "-" [t] is aligned about only .1 or .2 staff
spaces too high,
whereas all upper cases seem to align wrong in the same way,
about .1 or .2 staff spaces too low.

And to make it much more complicated (and this might be the reason, why
this bug is difficult to find), the much too high aligning lower cases

which case all is only aligned a bit too low and not so easy to see.
In the attached minimal example file there is the new own dynamic "aa",
which aligns obviously too high, and removing it with ab, You can hardly
see the little bit too low aligning ...
I would like to read some comments to this.

A new feature since 2.10.14 doesn't work
Hi list, the new feature described in the documentation under "Changes" as: "Objects that belong outside of the staff are now positioned automatically to avoid collisions." doesn't work on my machine (debian sarge 3.1), neither with 2.10.14 nor with 2.10.15. word-space at crescendoText?
Hi at all,
(version 2.10.15)
In the documentation under "8.1.6 Overview of text markup commands" is
written, that the property word-space determines the space between each
markup in args.
This does work properly. :-)
But trying to use it with setting the crescendoText, it doesn't work,
and I can't figure out, why, because it is also really a text markup,
ins't it?
In the small example below is shown the not working word-space in
crescendoText and its working in normal text markup.

wrong placed staccato dot
Hi at all,
(version 2.10.15)
Setting the direction of staccato with "_"
causes wrong positioning in x-direction.
The very small .ly-snippet below demonstrates this.
But I'm not sure, if this is a bug or a feature.
If it were a feature, I would like to get a hint,
how to disable this feature for some cases.

fine and odd slurs
Hi list,
(version 2.10.15)
the attached example is not so very short (but not TOO long, I think),
because I want to demonstrate the behaviour of a slur at line break
without manipulating it.
The first slur looks very nice, although there are many things to take
in account.
The second slur looks quite odd.
Why?
Any hints?

Why is the text shifted, when using \hspace ?

(version 2.10.14)
I posted this on Feb, 01, but got no reply, so I ask it again:
Using crescendoText with a dashed line I wanted to put a bit more space
between the text and the dashed line with \hspace #1.
But then I found that the dashed line was shifted to the right as wanted,
but the text from the crescendoText was shifted also, upwards,
ca. .5 staff spaces, and this is, what I don't want.
Is this a bug or a feature, or what else am I perhaps doing wrong?

define own variables
Hi,
Using version 2.10.20 I've tried to define an own variable, but it
doesn't seem to work, although lilypond doesn't give an error or
warning.
In the attached .ly -file I'm using a variable "manualBeam" taken from
the documentation, and this does work as expected.
I'm no programmer, so I can't see, why my own variable "Abstand" doesn't
work.
In the example there ar four outcommented lines, which do the same as
I'm wanting with my variable "Abstand".
Incommenting these and outcommenting the following line shows, what I
want to do.
The variale would be better for many calls of
"\overrideProperty #"Score.NonMusic ..."
to make the source better readable.
Could somebody help me, please?

manipulate BarLine
Hi,
Using version 2.10.20 with piano staff I've tried to manipulate the
BarLine (in the attached file with #'transparent), but this has only
effect to the bar lines in the particular systems and not to the bar
line between the systems.
I searched in the archives and in the LSR, but couldn't find something
concerning this ...
Can somebody help to solve this problem, please?

again a defining problem
Hi,
using version 2.10.20
it is possible to define a variable to change the color of NoteHeads.
So after defining the variable "rot" (as done in the attached file) the
changing of NoteHeads with the color red can be notated as
\rot d
instead of
\once\override NoteHead #'color = #red d
and is saving lots of typing.
This works so far.
Now the expression at changing colors in chords is shorter, but
nevertheless too long for many changes and is making chords quite
unreadable:
I would prefer to notate e.g. like this:
The attached example shows both definitions, the first one is working as
expected, but the second one gives an error after incommenting the
outcommented \blau
I don't know, weather the second one is possible at all, because
manipulating notes in chords is a very special feature (but a good, I
think).
Can sombody give me more information or tips, please?

Why doesn't this work?
Hi,
using 2.10.20
I tried to define the following:
blau = #(define-music-function (parser location Note) (ly:music?)
#{ \tweak #'color #blue $Note #})
But it doesn't seem to work ...
Is there a mistake in the syntax or isn't it possible to define
music-functions including the "\tweak"?
Can somebody help me, please?

This doesn't work for slurs (bowings) together with fingerings.
Try:
\override Fingering #'avoid-slur = #'inside
or:
\once\override Fingering #'avoid-slur = #'inside

paging at piano-music for four hands
Hello, I'm using lilypond version 2.2.0. My question: Are there routines to generate a usefull paging at piano music for four hands? problem with Ties in midi

about two month ago, Han Wen wrote, that ties in midi do work again.
Really, they do, but in my example they do a bit chaotic:

beaming problem
Hi, my version is 2.2.0. In a piece with \time 9/16 I need almost notes in the form eight sixteenth eight sixteenth eight sixteenth ... and so on. This was not the solution for my case:
Instead of setting the short sixteenth beam to the left, it resulted in
disappearing the short sixteenth beam.

Handling of Ties in chords individually?
Hi at all.
I'm still using lilypond 2.2.0, and I wonder, wether it is possible to
determine at tied chords explicitely, which direction every tie shall
have.
To demonstrate that this is necessary, here a little piece of code:

The second tie (from bottom to top) between 'b' and 'b' would look much
better, if its direction would be down. The other ties should behold
their directions.
With \tieDown, \tieUp or \tieBoth I can't get a good result.
Any ideas?
Or perhaps a solution to this is planned for a later lilypond version?

shorten beamed stems without overriding beam-positions?
Hi at all.
I'm using version 2.2.0
and want to shorten many beamed stems in a way, which allows to
transpose the whole score afterwards several times, so I cannot use e.g.
\override Beam #'positions = #'(2 . 0).
In my short example at the bottom I can't find a way to shorten the
stems enough. :-(
With \override Stem #'beamed-lengths = #'(1) there is no way.
I also made experiments with minimum-free-lengths and
extreme-minimum-free-lengths, but no result.
It seems, as if one could only make the stems longer ...
e.g. with \override Stem #'beamed-lengths = #'(7)
Can somebody help me, please?

2.3.20 doesn't work :-(
Hi at all, just newly installed, the version 2.3.20 doesn't work. After convert-ly on a little .ly-file and then invoking lilypond on it, lilypond says: lilypond: Symbol `kpse_format_info' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking `a-dreiklaenge.ly' wird jetzt verarbeitet Analysiere... Interpretation der Musik...Speicherzugriffsfehler To me this tells not enough, I don't know, what I have to do ... Please, can somebody help me? After updating this file, lilypond-snapshot seems to work correct, but there is some trouble with fonts. Meanwhile i did update a lot of programs around this (e.g. tetex-bin libkpathsea-perl libkpathsea3 gsfonts gsfonts-x11 libnet-perl perl-modules libhtml-parser-perl libwww-perl perl perl-base libcfitsio2 libastro-fits-cfitsio-perl ), but the font-problem remains: Perhaps there are still two problems, one with resolution and another with feta-braces-e. My opinion is, that this is not the problem.
On my machine with debian-sid, there is no such warning,
but the same problem with 8000 dpi, as described in Walters e-mail.
Further exists at me, in opposite to Walter, the problem with
the font feta-braces-e:
dvips: Font feta-braces-e not found, characters will be left blank.
as described in my last e-mail concerning problems with lilypond-snapshot.
Nevertheless I've tried Your suggestion, but:
It ist still not yet running. :-(
I still hope, that it will run soon ...

problem at convert-ly
Hi at all, lilypond-2.2.6 freshly installed, I wanted to update an old file named op-25-01.ly, produced with 2.2.0, but convert-ly produces a SyntaxWarning. What does this mean, and is it relevant or not? A file named op-25-01.ly.NEW with 0 bytes was created, and the original file was untouched. Hello list, My version is 2.2.6. The footer seems me too near under the last line, if I use interscorelinefill = 5.0 \mm lastpagefill = 1.0 \mm I've no idea, how to change this, if I don't want to do it with a workaround (unvisible note very low). The workaround would be VERY awful, because of I want to use pedal with pedal brackets, and this bracket-line together with the footer shifts up the last line of a page. The pedal bracket is continuous, only broken by \sustainUp\sustainDown. Therefore the workaround would be a hard work ... Can anybody tell me how to change the vertical space above the footer without shifting down the footer? Meanwhile I solved this with a workaround:
