Missing feta20.afm file on Cygwin - Windows 2000

2005-05-18 Thread Charles Cave

I have installed lilypon on Cygwin on a Windows 2000 machine.

When I run the lilypond command I get a message about a missing
feta20.afm file.

I researched the mailing list archives and couldnt find a solution to
the problem.

The result of both printenv TEXMF and kpsewhich feta20.afm both
give null responses:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cygdrive/l> printenv TEXMF
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cygdrive/l> kpsewhich feta20.afm
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cygdrive/l>

I followed the usual Cygwin setup prompts and let the installation run through
to completion as it took at least ten minutes.

Thanks
Charles

Re: Distance between staves

2005-05-18 Thread Antonio PALAMA'
Same problem for me, my long established method of using
interscoreline = some small or even negative length
to fine tune the distance between staves and the number of staves per
page doesn't work any more.
I suspect this has something to do with the use of the latex backend,
but at this point I really don't know how to deal with this problem.
Any help appreciated.

Why do chords print below staff?

2005-05-18 Thread Peter F Whyte
I used to get chordnames printing above the staff, but now they always,
always print below. Nothing I try to change seems to have any effect on
the position whatsover. I've searched the entire archive, but all to no
avail. Hoping desperately someone can help. This is the third time I've
tried to solve the problem, and it's taken 3 hours of absolute frustration.

I'm using Win XP Pro SP2 with lilypond 2.4.2 (can't bear to change the
version again as it took ages last time to get things sorted, and it works
ok, except for this problem).

I've parts all in a separate file and an include line which works fine.
Here's my score section. I'm looking for chords on top, melody line
next, lyrics below this, and piano staff at the bottom. It all works fine until
I add the chords - they always go to the bottom, never the top.

\score {

\set chordChanges = ##t

\context Voice = mel {
\set Staff.instrument = #"Melody"
\set Staff.instr = #"Mel"

I was using version 2.4.3 that comes with cygwin, because I am on
a PC with Windows 2000. That is the version I got from the
'download' page of Lilypond for Windows. A few minutes ago,
I downloaded the latest version of Cygwin's Lilypond (2.4.6) and
I tested again the score I gave in example: the tempo mark is still
missing.

I don't mean to harp on about this, but CCRMA has a set of Yum repos as
well. See this posting: http://ccrma-
mail.stanford.edu/pipermail/planetccrma/2005-April/008694.html.

Anyhow, if you use up2date you can use Yum, apt and dir repos, and it
will keep them all in sync. Just add the repositories
to /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources.

Renato Biolcati Rinaldi wrote:

Doesn't seem to help much,
Since (-4 . 4) is the default value in LilyPond version 2.4, it will
obviously not make any diffence. However, from version 2.4, the
property minimumVerticalExtent will only affect the separation within
each score line, i.e. if you have a score with several staves it will
affect the distance between the staves and if you have a a score with
a stave of music and a line of lyrics then it will affect the separation
between these.
If you want to affect the distance between the score lines, then you
should use the betweensystempadding and betweensystemspace as described
in the section on "Page layout" in the manual. The default values are
4mm and 20mm, respectively.
   /Mats
I tried all possible combination of numbers but
there is always a minimum distance between staves which I don't know how to
decrease.
I would like to print the attached music on a sinlge page without using a
font too small (say with a 16). The orginal is printed on a single A4 page
with a font size more or less like feta 16, with Lilypond I need two pages
instead, and there is a lot of room between staves.
This is concert piece so after all I may also keep it in 2 pages, but I
must
copy plenty of parade music and it is imperative that I am able to print a
piece on a sinlge A5 landscape sheet and with a decent font size because
it's music to be played while standing or even worse while walking:-)

Search the mailing list archives, I'm certain that the problem
has been discussed before. However, first run lilypond again with
the flag
lilypond --verbose test.ly
to get more information on what's up. Especially, check the output
lines related to dvips.
For the paper size, the default in LilyPond is A4, since the main
authors live in Europe. The manual tells you how to change to
letter size or whatever you prefer. However, I don't think that's
the main problem here.

The word is "include". It's not in the manual; I'll fix that right

Actually, it's mentioned in the tutorial:

I'm still adding it to the non-tutorial section of the manual.

Please send a small but complete example file that illustrates the

that you hadn't specified below and the chords are printed nicely
on top of the stave, so there's nothing wrong with the part of the

I'm using Win XP Pro SP2 with lilypond 2.4.2 (can't bear to change the

I've parts all in a separate file and an include line which works fine.

If possible, use a recent 2.4.x version instead of 2.5.2.
I guess it will be hard for anyone on the mailing list to
answer your question unless you tell what Linux distribution you use and
where you found the RPM. However, you can probably find the answer in
the mailing list archives if your search string includes both the
error message and the name of your distribution.

I think if you use \VoiceOne and \VoiceTwo you should get what you are looking
for.  I
regularly combine hymn harmonies from various sources into a single score and I
use
them to achieve that. Here's a few snippets from my standard file just showing
the right
hand (I place all the parts in one file where this came from, then I do the
score in a
second one and include the parts in it.)

% lilypond starts
% \melody and \alto are defined above
% as regular music expression blocks
%

global =  {  \time 2/2 }

Key =  { \key ef \major }

rhUpper =  \relative c'' {
\voiceOne
\Key
\mark \markup {HTC}
\melody
\bar "|."
}

rhLower =  \relative c' {
\voiceTwo
\Key
\alto
}

PianoRH = {
\clef treble
\global
\set Staff.midiInstrument = "acoustic grand"
\context Staff <<
\context Voice = "one" \rhUpper
\context Voice = "two" \rhLower
   >>
}

piano = {
\context PianoStaff <<
\set PianoStaff.instrument = #"Piano"
\set PianoStaff.minimumVerticalExtent = #'(-2 . 2)
#(set-accidental-style 'piano-cautionary)
\context Staff = "upper" \PianoRH
\context Staff = "lower" \PianoLH

Re: TEXMF variable needs to be set on Cygwin

2005-05-18 Thread Mats Bengtsson
For the record (it seems from private emails that Charles suffered
from some temporary problems):
This is never the correct solution! This variable will be set
automatically in Cygwin (for those interested in the technical details,
it's done in the file /etc/profile.d/lilypond-profile.sh, which is
sourced automatically when you start Cygwin).
The only real source of problems we have seen on the mailing list,
related to this setting is for people who have TexLive installed
in Windows, since this installation sets the same environment
variable. Workarounds can be found in the mailing list archives.

The fonts are part of the ec-fonts-mftraced package. They should be

Please rerun setup.exe and reinstall lilypond. Make sure that tetex (bin

Re: Why do chords print below staff?

2005-05-18 Thread Mats Bengtsson
Tricky one! I send a copy to bug-lilypond, both since the
difference between \chords and \chordmode is completely undocumented
(except for the NEWS file for 2.4) and since I don't realize why
the chords end up below the stave.
I stripped down your example to the following, where the chords
still are printed below the staff.
\version "2.4.0"
melody = \relative c'' {
  a4 a8 a g4 g |
  f2 f |
}
guitar = \new ChordNames \chordmode {
  f2 c |
  f1 |
}
\score {
  <<
  \new ChordNames {
\set chordChanges = ##t
\guitar
 }
  \new Staff \context Voice = mel {
\melody
}
  >>
}
Note that I replaced '\chords' with '\new ChordNames \chordmode'
(which is equivalent) in an attempt to understand what's going on.
The chords will move up above the stave if you do at least one of
the following:
- Replace 'guitar = \new ChordNames \chordmode' with
  'guitar = \chordmode'
- Move the property setting of chordChanges into
  guitar = \new ChordNames \chordmode {...}

I'm using Win XP Pro SP2 with lilypond 2.4.2 (can't bear to change

Thanks, the fix worked. Now the time signature is printed in a
typewriter font, as was the problem in an earlier version with
dynamics.

And the drag and drop app works great. What's the significance of the

RE: Distance between staves

2005-05-18 Thread Fairchild
Feature request - -

Several recent threads demonstrate a desire for absolute control of vertical
spacing.

Available defaults and overrides normally create wonderful layouts, but
there are instances where they frustrate user efforts to effect specific
vertical spacing. Currently available handles include betweensystempadding,
betweensystemspace, Staff minimumVerticalExtent, and careful use of \raise
as in \markup { "" \raise #n "" }.  Only the awkward markup construct is
line specific. In combination, these behave somewhat unpredictably.

The need is an ability to dictate precise vertical layouts, line by line,
even if this provides control ad absurdum.

Actually, it's mentioned in the tutorial:

I'm still adding it to the non-tutorial section of the manual.

You use \include "filename.ly".  Example in manual p 24.

%

global =  {  \time 2/2 }

Key =  { \key ef \major }

rhUpper =  \relative c'' {
\voiceOne
\Key
\mark \markup {HTC}
\melody
\bar "|."
}

rhLower =  \relative c' {
\voiceTwo
\Key
\alto
}

PianoRH = {
\clef treble
\global
\set Staff.midiInstrument = "acoustic grand"
\context Staff <<
\context Voice = "one" \rhUpper
\context Voice = "two" \rhLower
   >>
}

piano = {
\context PianoStaff <<
\set PianoStaff.instrument = #"Piano"
\set PianoStaff.minimumVerticalExtent = #'(-2 . 2)
#(set-accidental-style 'piano-cautionary)
\context Staff = "upper" \PianoRH
\context Staff = "lower" \PianoLH

Re: Missing Font

2005-05-18 Thread Mats Bengtsson
These links in ~/.fonts/ have definitely not been added automatically
when you installed any package. On the other hand, there have been
some emails describing how you can manually add links to font files
in that directory in order to handle some problems in the recent
LilyPond 2.5.xx versions, see for example
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-lilypond/2005-05/msg00069.html
My guess is still that you have applied this workaround earlier and
forgot to update it. First try to simply remove all the links in
the directory.

yes, you'd do
  cd .fonts ; ln -s /sw/share/lilypond/2.5.23/fonts/type1/*pfa .
every time you upgrade, you have to reset the links, becuase the version
number is in the path of the fonts.

do you get the typewriter font with the drag & drop app as well? the
snake is a python, since the underlying script is a python script. I'm
currently delving into Cocoa to build point & click support for PDF, so
stay tuned.

Yes, thank you, for some reason making aliases in the Finder did not do
the same as ln for some reason. Deleting them and working from your
suggestion in an earlier post fixed it.

The monospace font problem is gone now, so I can't test it. However, it
did refuse to operate when I was functioning with dead links in /.fonts
this morning. I got a similar warning message to the error I posted at
the start of this thread.

It's a great idea, and I could make use of it. I personally still have
a desire to stay in Terminal, but for the millions of Mac users out
there, this will offer a significant boost in public awareness.

layout question

2005-05-18 Thread Michiel Lange
Hello list,
I have this piece that starts out with a combined Soprano and Alto and
separate Piano system.
After measure 14 there is a Tenor + Bass system added. After measure 36
the Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass staves are exploded to 4 systems.

The numbers are not very important, but it's easier talking...
At the first page I get 3 lines, page 2 starts with measure 14 and also
has 3 lines.
At page 3 measure 26 starts, but only has 2 lines, and looks pretty
weird in it's layout. The first line is completely at the top, the
second at the bottom, giving the page a very empty look in the middle.

On page 4 measure 36 starts and those are the last two lines. They do
fill up the page neatly.

An overall look of the music:
- page 1 looks widely spaced, but not ugly
- page 2 looks decently filled, neat and good.
- page 3 looks empty
- page 4 looks good again, except for a minor oddity in the lyrics which
I should look at some time...

I could live with some clear space between the lines, but I would think
that such a thing should be more consequent among the pages.

It is engraved with Lilypond 2.4.5
I have the piece available for display at:
http://minas-2.demon.nl/~michiel/muziek/blessyou.ly
http://minas-2.demon.nl/~michiel/muziek/blessyou.pdf
If you have some suggestions on how to make the piece really
good-looking I would be very glad!

TIA,
Michiel
