While being a native German speaker, I fear I won't have enough time

Re: starting lilypond from Windows XP

2004-11-23 Thread Mats Bengtsson
It seems that the setup.exe program failed to install all necessary
packages. Simply rerunning setup.exe once more will usually solve these
kind of problems. In the package selection window, you should make sure
that the packages libkpathsea3 libkpathsea3abi13, tetex-bin and
tetex-tiny are selected (all from the Publishing category). They should
be selected by default as soon as you have selected the lilypond
package, but it seems that setup.exe fails occassionally.

Thanks for the help, Mathias and Christ, things are better, but I'm

Ah, now I see how it works/ why it's not the latest...
Ah, it seems your earlier install was a binary install?
Yep, which is what the Fink installation instructions recommended for
first timers...

Switching back to the stable tree and running "fink selfupdate-rsync"
should work and give you a 2.4.x binary package to install.
Well, everything seems to be working fine now, but the version numbers
I'm seeing don't look right...
I installed the developer tools, and then tried going back to the
stable tree and doing rsync then update all and it still shows as 2.2.x
in the binary and source columns. I tried the unstable tree with rsync
and got 2.4.x in the source, but still only 2.2.x in the binary (2.5.x
for lilypond-unstable) I've still been using the Fink Controller app.
(The Fink Commander suggested, but didn't require the developer tools
to be installed)

Any suggestions?
Thanks again,
Paul

Apparently, the binary build for Fink is still 'stuck' at 2.2. Strange
that the unstable brach _does_ show 2.5 (binary, I presume?)...

If you're really a 'first-timer', you should just leave it at that, get the
2.2, and work with that until the binaries get built, or you get enough
'courage' to get your feet wet and build it from source.

Despite the uneasy feelings you may have about building from source,
it usually doesn't require much technical knowledge, and only takes
a couple of hours in the worst case. And that's time that your computer
needs to download and build, not time you need to invest to build the
program.

Those are the only options I see right now...

HTH!

The ETF converter hasn't been very actively supported. One reason is
that the ETF format isn't really well documented, as far as I
understand. I think everybody would be happy if you were willing to
take a look at this converter and make it work better.
I'm sure you can find some old emails in the mailings list archives
on previously reported problems with the converter.

ETF conversion

2004-11-23 Thread Ben Crowell
I bought a copy of Finale about 7 years ago. Because I bought
it, they gave me a license to download and read the documentation
for ETF format, which I did. IIRC, you actually needed to put
in a password on their web site in order to access the docs.
I e-mailed them to ask if they thought it was legal for me to
show the docs to other people, and they never replied. I don't
remember whether there was a EULA.

I never intend to use Finale again, so if there's a lilypond
developer who's interested in working more on the ETF-ly
converter, I'd be happy to donate my copy of Finale, which
would then presumably make it legal for that person to use
the ETF docs. (Well, at least that's my interpretation under
the doctrine of first sale in U.S. copyright law, but IANAL,
and I guess most of the lilypond developers are in Europe.
I also haven't looked carefully to see if they're claiming
it's a trade secret or something.) The ETF documentation was
actually quite complete and well written.

2.4.2 header questions

2004-11-23 Thread D Josiah Boothby
Hello list,
The documentation pertaining to headers has been a bit confusing to me, so
I'm taking my questions here:

With a multimovement piece, how do I get a large roman numeral centered
between movements indicating which movement is beginning?

Similarly, how do I get a header indicating which instrument a part is for
on each page?

And lastly, if I have a footnote, how do I do that? Should I be using
lilypond-book?

in the documentation for v. 2.4.2 regarding the difference between \paper

What exactly is unclear to you? If you go to
you will get a step by
step installation guide.

As for Cygwin: since Lilypond is basically a Unix program, you'll need a
Unix emulation layer to run it on Windows, which is what Cygwin
provides. Fortunately, it'll all be installed if you simply follow the
instructions on the page I mentioned.
