[JPP-Devel] JPP Legal Entity
I know Erwan had prompted some discussion about forming a legal entity for the JUMP Pilot Project and OpenJUMP a few days ago. I think he may have decided to use a legal entity that was already in place. We had this same discussion a year or two ago. I want to point out that the Free Software Conservancy offers legal protection and other non-profit services to open source software development projects like OpenJUMP. I think we decided against this previously because I was under the impression that we had to sign copyright of the source code over to the Conservancy. I was recently talking to one of the attorneys for the Conservancy about the SurveyOS Project, which is a Conservancy Member Project, and she told me this was not the case. We can choose which portions of OpenJUMP's source code, if any, for which we would like to transfer copyright to the Conservancy. I would like to know if the other OpenJUMP developers have any comments on this. Would they feel comfortable forming a non-profit for the JPP under the umbrella of the Free Software Conservancy? I only mention this because I think the formation of a non-profit for the JPP will be unavoidable as the project becomes more popular. [JPP-Devel] Planning For Redefined Horizons And OpenJUMP Small Business Version
I was able to sit down this last weekend and take a look at my business plans that involve OpenJUMP. (I am slowly putting together a plan for a company that will promote the use of OpenJUMP in local small businesses that manage spatial information at some level. This company is called Redefined Horizons. I've got a small web site for the company online, which you can see here: http://www.redefinedhorizons.com/) With some help from my wife Monique I was able to put together a list of features that I felt were critical for the use of OpenJUMP in the type of small businesses I will be targeting as potential customers. I also added to this list some features that I would enjoy working on personally. I estimated the time it would take to implement these features in OpenJUMP and I have put together a "development roadmap" that sets tentative dates for the release of these new features. These are just crude estimates, and progress could be a lot slower or might even be a little faster. :] My goal is to complete the implementation of all the "business-critical" features for OpenJUMP by June 2008. I would make the first OpenJUMP SBE release at this time and begin actively marketing the program to potential customers in my area. (SBE = Small Business Edition) The development road map is based on a 6-month release cycle. I would like the first-of-the-year release to be an "official" OpenJUMP release, while the mid-year release would not have to be an official release. the mid-year release could be released as a version of OpenJUMP or OpenJUMP SBE. I will be setting aside the months of May and December to work on bug-squishing and packaging for each release. I think that this is the closest thing we currently have to a "road map" for OpenJUMP development. I know this road map won't be shared by other independent developers or organizations working with OpenJUMP, but it will at least give other developers and idea of where I would like to be headed with my programming efforts. I hope this will improve the opportunities for collaboration. I believe even a fuzzy plan for the future is better than no plan at all. At any rate, if you would like to add some features to the development road map just let me know. I can make the edits for you or can provide the password needed to edit the wiki yourself. If there are any questions about the features I've put on the road maps, or my plans for their integration, please let me know. The Sunburned Surveyor - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. [JPP-Devel] OpenJUMP User Manual
As part of my plan to release Small Business Edition of OpenJUMP in June 2008 I will be working on a user manual for OpenJUMP. The manual will be based partly on the original user manual written by Vivid Solutions, and also on the great OpenJUMP Basics tutorial that has already been written. I am currently in the process of obtaining estimates for the printing and binding of hard copies of the manual. I will still be working on the new feature documentation on Monday, and will be setting aside some additional time on Tuesdays to work on the user manual. I want to set up a documentation system that will allow me to produce the manual in PDF format, but also in a format that can be incorporated into an online help system. I still need to give some thought to this. If the folks at Kosmo or SIGLE are intersted in this User Manaul they can get in touch with me. I have no problem setting up the manual so it could serve as the basis for "brand-specific" editions. We might even be able to do this using a subversion repository. I'd also like to work with anyone interseted in translating the manual to a language other than English. I'll post more details when I get the system to manage the documentation established. [JPP-Devel] Pluggable Renderers and Plug-In Dependency System
The plug-in dependecy system has been easier to implement that I had thought it would be. I've made some small changes from the "Plan A" that I described on my blog. I hope to have an "alpha" version of OpenJUMP that includes support for both pluggable renderers and plug-in dependency released by the end of the week. I'll make these changes in the OpenJUMP-Ex Subversion repository, not the OpenJUMP CVS. After we've had a chance to try the changes out I'll put together a brief proposal to commit the changes to the OpenJUMP CVS. I'll be working on a plug-in for free-form map labels that should test both features. I hope to have it complete by the middle of May. The Sunburned Surveyor - Take Surveys. Earn Cash.
