I know Erwan had prompted some discussion about forming a legal entity for
the JUMP Pilot Project and OpenJUMP a few days ago. I think he may have
decided to use a legal entity that was already in place.
We had this same discussion a year or two ago. I want to point out that the
Free Software Conservancy offers legal protection and other non-profit
services to open source software development projects like OpenJUMP. I think
we decided against this previously because I was under the impression that
we had to sign copyright of the source code over to the Conservancy.
I was recently talking to one of the attorneys for the Conservancy about the
SurveyOS Project, which is a Conservancy Member Project, and she told me
this was not the case. We can choose which portions of OpenJUMP's source
code, if any, for which we would like to transfer copyright to the
Conservancy.
I would like to know if the other OpenJUMP developers have any comments on
this. Would they feel comfortable forming a non-profit for the JPP under the
umbrella of the Free Software Conservancy?
I only mention this because I think the formation of a non-profit for the
JPP will be unavoidable as the project becomes more popular.
