Re: [GNC] Fwd: GNC won't open my data

2025-01-14 Thread Brad Morrison
Hi Bruce/GNUCash users,

What version fo GNUCash was used to create your data file that is having
trouble opening?

https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Installation#Upgrading &
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Using_Different_Versions.2C_Up_And_Downgrade
are some resources on what to do when upgrading.

Another possibility could be that a dependency/library is not included
on your Linux distro, therefore you could use the Flatpak version of
GNUCash - https://flathub.org/apps/org.gnucash.GnuCash

https://flatpak.org/setup/MX%20Linux &
https://flathub.org/setup/MX%20Linux for setting up Flatpak on MX-Linux
- https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=mx

What version of MX-Linux are you using? The latest version appears to be
23.4 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MX_Linux

Are you using the default XML format?

Is your new file (new book) saved in the same location as the old data?

Have you tried to open your old data file within GnuCash by clicking
File --> Open from the GnuCash menu bar?

Re: [GNC] Fwd: GNC won't open my data

2025-01-14 Thread sunfish62--- via gnucash-user
The original thread was from a month ago, and the OP was able to solve his
problem, I believe.

The version of GnuCash in use is immaterial, and telling people to upgrade is
unlikely to solve their problem--unless you know for a fact that the problem in
question has been observed and explicitly fixed in a later version.

In this case, the problem would most likely be related to the user saving their
data file in a DBMS format, but not having the libdbi drivers installed on the
second iteration.

I have read about this, and seen this many times, through multiple
releases, and many years.

I recall that the best way to handle this is to export to another
format, maybe html, and then adjust the exported file.

Save the report as html and print the html file with a browser to a pdf

Re: [GNC] screwed up my cash acount

2025-01-14 Thread Kalpesh Patel
See https://storware.eu/blog/grandfather-father-son-gfs-backup/ for very
popular backup scheme. I advocate backing up the entire system - not just bits
here and bytes there. Even with modern electronics in the hard drives (spinning
platter ones or the solid state ones), they normally fail to tell you in time
when they go bad and believe me they do go bad.

How do you make a backup of all the other user data on your computer?
<> You should not be looking at different backup
of user data from each application. You want a GENERAL back-up procedure.

You have a lot of decisions to make. How often will your data be backed up? To
what will the data be backed-up, the cloud? An external drive? If the latter, a
second copy sent offsite?

The point I am making is that if you are backing up ALL of your user data, you
don't need something specific to gnucash (gnucash user data just a special case
with "all")

There are TWO fundamental kinds of back-up, all as of some date/time and
"incremental" (every time a file is changed). The latter takes less space but
will require software. The former you can even do manually.

Re: [GNC] "Make PDF" splits line of text.

2025-01-14 Thread Jediator
There is a hard-wired page-break built into the print function to split
the pages based on your page and font sizes.  You can adjust the page
size or margin but can't do scaling to save papers (and trees).  I tried
multiple ways but can't get rid of it.  This is really an unwanted
feature that I believe only occurs in recent releases (>5.8+?).  Could
the development team consider removing this feature so let the printer
makes page breaks dynamically? Thanks!

[GNC] Organizing securities

2025-01-14 Thread Kalpesh Patel
Hi GNC User group -

I was looking to organize different items (I hesitate to say commodities as
I think that may not be correct way to refer them as they are really defined
in Security Editor - correct me if I am wrong in my understanding) that are
listed underneath Trading top level account and in Namespace that is
available in Security Editor. While I understand that these are free format
and are left up to one's imagination, I am more bit interested on original
vision of how it was to be used. For the Namespace under the Security
Editor, I've settled on organizing it based on the Exchange where the
commodity trades as per Yahoo's finance web site, I am not sure about the
former one. All insights welcome, including for latter one.

Thanks.
