The same way as with any other email -- delete everything you _don't_
want to reply to. (Many mail programs offer a nice shortcut: highlight
the part you want to reply to with your mouse, before you click the
Reply button.) That seems pretty basic, so maybe I'm not understanding
your question.

If you meant "how to reply to just one person", please don't. Always
include the list in your reply. Someone else may have the same issue and
benefit from a public thread. Or someone else may have a solution, which
you would miss by a one-to-one reply.

[GNC] duplicate transactions exported

2024-10-18 Thread Brook Milligan via gnucash-user
I am looking at the transactions exported from a GC (v5.0 Mac) book. It seems
that there are a number of duplicate records in the exported file. Why would
that be?

Cheers,

Re: [GNC] duplicate transactions exported

2024-10-18 Thread Brook Milligan via gnucash-user
OK, upgrading to GC v5.9.1 fixes the problem. Opening the same *.gnucash file
and exporting yields only one line per split, as expected.

Apparently, this is not a known issue for earlier versions, but there may still
be problems.

Cheers,
Brook

Re: [GNC] Font size

2024-10-18 Thread Phyllis Bruce
Thanks Ken, et. all. I managed to mess it up. I cannot access c:\ in the
file explorer. I created the file exactly as above, including the *
{font:...;} and filed it on my desktop.
I decided to open it to verify it was correct and got the message
"gtk-3.0.css already exists. Open anyway?" So I did. I lost the GNU
shortcut from my desktop.
I can open GNU from a history where I found the exact pathway in the
Help-About and was able to get there by clicking on that to get here:
Do I just move the file from the desktop to this location?

Thanks in advance for your help. po

2nd, I also would like to change the default font size for the account list and

Phyllis ? welcome to the club!  This was a question I had many times - and
thanks to the great group here - I was able to get this fixed.

The wiki below explains how to make these adjustments, the proper file name,
and the proper file location for each operating system.

https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Customizing_the_Appearance

If this does not help you ? or if you need more detailed instructions, write
back with your OS and version of GnuCash - and someone here will walk you
through it.

Hope this helps.

The GnuCash financial data is kept in a file, and this is one you must back
up. I have mine on my home NAS, so that all computers and OSs can access
it. The file name is "something".gnucash, and this should absolutely be a
file that you backup. To move your file to a new location, copy it to the
new location, open GnuCash and manually open the new location (File->Open).
This will probably be the default, but when it opens correctly, I would
delete the file from the old location just to force it to use the new
location.

I am not going to recommend backup programs - there are a multitude for
Windows, and you can do your own Google search.

Once you have the data file backed up securely, the other things are
probably good to have - these include your preference settings and saved
reports.

The guide (https://gnucash.org/viewdoc.phtml?rev=5&lang=C&doc=guide)
explains the type of files in section 2.5.  Section 2.6.2 talks about
preferences and saved reports, and shows where there are stored in Windows.
Please let me (us) know if this is confusing, and I can tell you where mine
are on Windows - I'm writing this on a Mac. The saved reports are in a
.gnucash folder that is either in Users/ or in "My
Documents".

Yeah! I got it. It took a while to find the right folder to put the file in,
but found it using the hot-link on the "about" pop up in the open gnu cash app.
Also, I think the spaces and separate lines made a difference. Mine looks like
this now: /* Application wide font setting */* {  font: 20px verdana;arial;}
4 lines: 1 = comment, 2 = only asterisk and wavy bracket, 3 specs for font, 4 =
closing wavy bracketI copied the format from this sample:

don't need new readers :)-Joanna___Message:

OK ? For Phyllis and Joanna - Please bear with me.  I do have a programming
background - so I have to be mindful to not be too technical.  This is for
Windows.  Steps:

  1.
If you don't have one already, you want to make a small text file called:
gtk-3.0.css
  2.
In this file, you just need one line of text:    * {font: 14px verdana, arial,
sans-serif;}  (format it just like I have it and notice, I am using 14 font and
I am using verdana as the main one because that is what I like.  Use what ever
size and font you want to replace the 14px verdana).
  3.
Save this file with the one line of text in the following folder  -
c:\users\x\Appdata\Roaming\Gnucash  (where x is your user profile).  If
this does not make sense to you - open GnuCash and hit HELP ? ABOUT.  The
folder listed next to GNC_USERCONFIG_DIR is where the file needs to be.

Close out of Gnucash, if you have it open, and then re-open it and the new font
should take hold.  If this does not work - others can chime in where I may have
made a mistake.  Hope this helps.

No change. There are still the same duplicate records after doing this.

Yes, my expectation too.

In this case there actually are 4 splits, so my expectation is that there
should be 4 lines with the same transaction ID. The problem is that each of
the 4 distinct lines is replicated a total of 3 times.

As a check, I created a new book and imported the unique set of transactions
from the first (i.e., the exported file sorted with “sort -u”) and re-exported
the transactions. That set still had the duplicates. Thus, there must be
something about the export process that is creating duplicates.

Is this a known issue?

Cheers,
Brook

Re: [GNC] duplicate transactions exported

2024-10-18 Thread Mark at Lorimark

really odd!

Here's what I'd suggest;

  1. go in to your register 'assets:bank'
  2. edit only 1 row
  3. change the 'dollars' to some other number
  4. re-export your data

My expectation; two of those lines would change (one line for each
side/split)

The export file looks totally wrong. It is showing the same transaction
ID for each and every line, and that's just totally wrong. I'd like to
look at your file directly, if you're interested. I'm very curious!

I've attached an excerpt from my 'extract transactions all account'
exercise. They look typically normal.

Re: [GNC] duplicate transactions exported

2024-10-18 Thread David H
I found that using 5.0 and exporting txns created a 32 Mb file but in 5.9
only 12.8 Mb. A quick look didn't show any duplicated txns but I'll have a
more thorough look later.

Re: [GNC] Font size

2024-10-18 Thread Ken Pyzik
OK — For Phyllis and Joanna - Please bear with me. I do have a programming
background - so I have to be mindful to not be too technical. This is for
Windows. Steps:

  1.
If you don't have one already, you want to make a small text file called:
gtk-3.0.css
  2.
In this file, you just need one line of text: * {font: 14px verdana,
arial, sans-serif;} (format it just like I have it and notice, I am using 14
font and I am using verdana as the main one because that is what I like. Use
what ever size and font you want to replace the 14px verdana).
  3.
Save this file with the one line of text in the following folder -
c:\users\x\Appdata\Roaming\Gnucash (where x is your user profile). If
this does not make sense to you - open GnuCash and hit HELP — ABOUT. The
folder listed next to GNC_USERCONFIG_DIR is where the file needs to be.

Close out of Gnucash, if you have it open, and then re-open it and the new font
should take hold. If this does not work - others can chime in where I may
have made a mistake. Hope this helps.

Ken

Re: [GNC] duplicate transactions exported

2024-10-18 Thread Joseph St. Denis via gnucash-user
I find that it happens when there is a difference between the dates that I
entered the transaction and the clear date. Most of the time the transactions
will only appear once but you have to pick the center column to have the
program to pick the correct transaction.

All the best

I am looking at the transactions exported from a GC (v5.0 Mac) book. It seems
that there are a number of duplicate records in the exported file. Why would
that be?

Brook

Re: [GNC] duplicate transactions exported

2024-10-18 Thread Brook Milligan via gnucash-user
I’m not sure I understand your answer.

To be more clear, I have exported all the transactions from a book into a CSV
file. That file has multiple lines that are exactly the same as each other.
Somehow, GC is exporting lines into the file that are the same.

Why should this happen? Does this mean that the schema allows for duplicates
in the internal record?

Cheers,
Brook

And are the amounts for each matching transaction the opposite sign - i.e.
1 positive and 1 negative - double entry accounting has at least two splits
for every transaction ?

Re: [GNC] duplicate transactions exported

2024-10-18 Thread Mark at Lorimark
That shouldn't be. The 'account' column should change for the split.
Normally, a transaction would have 2-lines (2-splits).

Can you send me an excerpt of those lines?

Why should that be?

Brook,

In your export, for any duplicated line, what is that value in the
'account name' column for each of those lines?

Sure, see attached. I have taken all the lines in the exported file that
correspond to the first transaction. There are 4 splits, each of which is
represented in the file by 3 duplicate lines.
