Re: [GNC] Whole life insurance

2022-04-24 Thread Michael or Penny Novack
An exception to the previous (one where you WOULD be able to separate
out the "cost of the insurance component").

Split dollar life insurance.

This is something an employer might include in the compensation package.
Especially as serves as an incentive for the employee to stay at least
until becomes a positive value.

This is a cash value policy, usually "whole life", premiums paid by the
employer and owned by the employer, but with certain rights given to the
employee.

a) The right to name the beneficiary (who gets the face value if you die)

b) The right to "buy out" the policy by paying the employer back all the
premiums to that point.

c) The right to have the policy surrendered and receive the amount by
which the sum of the premiums paid is less than the cash value (if not
less, you would owe that amount, hence the incentive to stay).

The "cost of insurance" is the amount of the premium required to pay for
the equivalent in term insurance and is reported to you on your pay
statement. In other words, part of your taxable pay but you don't
actually receive it as used pay for insurance. This is similar to the
deduction for "group life" insurance which might also be offered as part
of the compensation package and can be up to five years salary (but only
the first $50,000 is tax free). But  it is that "cost of insurance" part
of "split dollar" that gives it the name of "split".

Anyway -- because in THIS case the cost of the term insurance is split
out for you you could account for that as an ordinary expense. Since
split dollar is usually thought of as an investment (where the employer
puts up the capital) You might record the annual premium paid (less the
"cost of insurance part" debit expense and credit a liability (you in
effect owe the company for those premiums, payable from proceeds if/when
the policy is surrendered (or from your pocket if you choose to buy the
employer out and keep the policy. Note that the decision which option to
choose would be made at the time of leaving based upon your health
status at this future date.

For those still unclear about what this employee benefit is --
essentially the employer is letting you profit from an investment where
they provide an interest free loan for the capital and the right to make
a future "adverse selection" decision << your health is poor, but the
company has to let you buy the policy at the standard premium rate, not
the much higher premium charged somebody in poor health >>  They are
also giving you (in the meantime) the right to name the beneficiary and
they are paying for that but the IRS considers THAT to be a taxable
benefit so you pay tax on this small bit of income that you never
received in hand.

sudo apt install flatpak
sudo apt install gnome-software-plugin-flatpakflatpak remote-add
--if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepoRebooted

[GNC] Reinstall GnuCash after Ubuntu upgrade to 22.04

2022-04-24 Thread Steve Cohen
I just upgraded my system to Ubuntu 22.04 (from 21.10). As a non-official
application, GNUcash seems to have been removed from the system or rendered
non-functional though a launch icon remains and does nothing. Prior to
install, I was running GNC 4.9.

Can someone please point me in the right direction for building or
installing the best version of GNUcash on my new system?

Thanks.

I suggest you double-check the Account Type for the "Licenses and
Permits" account. You can do this from the Accounts tab, by clicking on
the account and pressing the Edit button. An Edit Account dialogue
appears. In the bottom left corner of this dialogue, there is a list,
"Account Type". In an expense hierarchy, only the types Income and
Expense will be listed. If Income is highlighted, change it to Expense.

The clue is that use of the term "Charges". In an Income account, the
left amount column is titled "Charge", and the right is titled "Income".
In an Expense account, the left amount column is titled "Expense", and
the right is titled "Rebate".

Does this help?

You have at least three options:

1) Install version 4.8a that ships with Ubuntu 22.04: sudo apt install gnucash

2) Use flatpack, this will get you a more recent version. See
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Flatpak

3) Build it yourself, and get 4.9 or the maintenance release (or other
releases). See

Re: [GNC] Whole life insurance

2022-04-24 Thread Fred Tydeman
The yearly life insurance company statement only shows
  Increase in cash value
  Increase in death benefit
It is fully paid up, so no more premiums.

Since the cash value is a real asset that I can borrow, I am now thinking
the increase in cash value
should be done as Non-taxable income.

However, I still have no idea how to do the future death benefit.
It is not an asset of mine. It might be an asset of my wife (if I die
first).
Or, it might be an asset of my son (if I die after my wife).

The death benefit is not an asset of anybody (yet). And yes, it could
result in an asset in YOUR books. Sorry, but death is no excuse for not
paying taxes so your books may live on a bit until closed by your executor.

As owner of the policy (unless a court rules otherwise*) one of your
rights is to name/specify the beneficiary but that COULD be you, in the
sense of your estate.

[GNC] Shutdown using the "X" in windows 11

2022-04-24 Thread Gyle McCollam
Using Windows 11 and GnuCash 4.10

Also had this issue in an older version. Clicked on the "X" to shut down and
had not saved first. In the dialogue I clicked on Cancel, but it still
shutdown. I expected "Cancel" to cancel the operation (shutdown), am I wrong.
What operation is it canceling? All 3 options have the same result, They all
close the program without saving and upon restart, I got the message that
"GnuCash could not obtain the lock for
C:\Users\*\OneDrive\Documents\GNUCash\**.gnucash." (see pic 2) "***" for
my specific system names.

I will try to remember to "Save" first, however when I do forget it is
frustrating that this built in safeguard doesn't work.

Re: [GNC] Shutdown using the "X" in windows 11

2022-04-24 Thread David Carlson
I have found that in one instance of of GnuCash 3.8 in a Ubuntu 21.04
laptop and in another instance of GnuCash 3.8 in a virtualbox instance of
Linux Lite based, I think, on the same release of Ubuntu, that if the
machines are allowed to to develop swap files larger than a few hundred
Megs before rebooting, then GnuCash sometimes fails to clear the lock file
even when it is closed several minutes before rebooting. I suspect that
newer releases of GnuCash may also fail to close the lock file if there is
a possibility that they are involved with a swap file. Further, it would
be easy to conclude that somehow this is interpreted either accurately or
erroneously as depending on whether the program is closed by clicking on
the "X" icon or using Alt-F, Q or Ctrl-Q. I also believe that if there
happens to be a pending edit left open, it is very easy to overlook the
warning in the rush to close GnuCash. That can also prevent clearing the
lock file.

I just tested 4.10 on Windows 10 and all 3 buttons close without saving and
then on relaunching got the lock error. However, if I let my 3 second

It appears you have found a bug.

Re: [GNC] Reinstall GnuCash after Ubuntu upgrade to 22.04

2022-04-24 Thread Tommy Trussell
I looked here --
https://packages.ubuntu.com/jammy/gnucash
shows version 4.8 SHOULD be available to you. HOWEVER I have heard the new
Ubuntu release strongly pushes everything packaged in snaps. (I haven't
upgraded yet so I'm only going by some initial reviews.) I definitely don't
recommend installing the ancient unofficial GnuCash 2.6.21 app in the snap
store.

However the version in Ubuntu 21.10 "Impish" seemed to have been GnuCash
4.4, so it seems you got GnuCash 4.9 from somewhere else.

You may want to review your software sources. The software upgrader
probably disabled a PPA or some other non-official software source for
GnuCash.

The old repository you were using will be present in your sources but
commented out. Look in /etc/apt/sources.d/ for a separate file, or a
modification to your /etc/apt/sources.list file.

And if you're used to installing from the Ubuntu Software "store," you
might want to install using a terminal instead.

Re: [GNC] Reinstall GnuCash after Ubuntu upgrade to 22.04

2022-04-24 Thread David H
Steve,

How did you upgrade? I'm still getting the not available message and I've
put off upgrading from 21.10 to 22.04 for the moment because of the
following in the release notes at
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/jammy-jellyfish-release-notes/24668...

Cheers David H.

Upgrading from Ubuntu 21.10

Upgrades to 22.04 LTS are currently not enabled (due a bug with snapd and
update-notifier) but will be in the next couple of days.

Re: [GNC] Shutdown using the "X" in windows 11

2022-04-24 Thread David H
FYI,

I'm finding none of this with GnuCash 4.10 on MacOS Monterey and Big Sur,
Ubuntu 21.10 (Flatpak and local build) and Windows 10 Pro (21H2 , OS
Build 19044.1645) with my data file saved locally. If I change a
transaction and don't commit it and attempt to "X" out of GnuCash I'm
prompted to Save Txn, Discard Txn or Cancel which all work as expected -
Cancel just stops the close process as expected. If I commit the change
and attempt to "X" out of GnuCash I'm prompted to Save file, Close without
Saving or Cancel which again stops the Close process.

Cheers David H.

Re: [GNC] Reinstall GnuCash after Ubuntu upgrade to 22.04

2022-04-24 Thread davidcousens49
David Tommy etal

As Ubuntu and Linux Mint are ultimately Debian based it should be possible to
install using dpkg or the Gdebi installer (you may need to install this on
Ubuntu -in terminal - "sudo apt install gdebi - but it is the default installer
in Linux Mint) from http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/g/gnucash/ which
has versions up to 4.10-2 available usually for a range of processor types.
Click on a version link to download the appropriate .deb file and then at
terminal prompt type "sudo gdebi .deb" and return.
