Hi all,

As you know, we have been unable to hold GNU Tools Cauldron this year
due to COVID-19. We plan to be back in 2021!

In the meantime, our friends at the Linux Plumbers Conference have
provided a GNU Tools track at their 2020 virtual conference 24-28 August.

The scope is the same as Cauldron, with talks, lightning talks,
tutorials and BoF sessions across all GNU tools: GlibC, GDB, binutils,
CGEN, DejaGnu, Newlib, GCC etc. We'll be using BigBlueButton as the
platform, and to try to fit in as many talks as possible, we'll be
restricting sessions to 25 minutes (10 minutes for lightning talks).

We invite your submissions. Full details at:

  https://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/linuxplumbers2020

Note that we have a hard deadline of 31 July 2020 (not long). Unlike
Cauldron, we won't be able to take late submissions, since we have to
tie in with the LPC 2020 infrastructure.

We look forward to seeing you (virtually) there. Any questions to
tools-cauldron-ad...@googlegroups.com, discussion and future
announcements to gcc@gcc.gnu.org.

Best wishes,

Jeremy Bennett
on behalf of the organizing committee

(and apologies to those on multiple lists, who get this message
multiple times).

GNU Cauldron short survey

2015-09-16 Thread Jeremy Bennett

Hash: SHA1

On behalf of the team who organized this year's GNU Tools Cauldron we
have prepared a short survey to help us to plan future GNU Tools
Cauldrons. This has already been sent directly to everyone who
attended this year's meeting, but I am posting it here to give anyone
who did not come a chance to express a view on future GNU Cauldrons.

To date we have been able to run this event without a registration fee
through the generous sponsorship and practical support of a number of
individuals and companies.

Your response to questions in this survey will provide us with some data
and feedback that can be taken into account when we design the format
for future GNU Tools Cauldrons and will also support our endeavors to
successfully attract sponsorship and support as we plan next year's event.

Please click this link to start the survey:

  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/27LN8F7

Many thanks for all your feedback,

GNU Tools Cauldron, 9-11 September 2016, Hebden Bridge UK.

2015-12-24 Thread Jeremy Bennett
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

We are very pleased to invite you all the GNU Tools Cauldron on 9-11
September 2016. Our venue this year is Hebden Bridge in The UK.
Details are here:

  https://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/cauldron2016

As usual, please register, send abstracts and ask administrivia
questions to tools-cauldron-admin AT googlegroups.com.

The Cauldron is organized by a small ad hoc group of volunteers. We
are keen to add some more people, so others can stand down. If you'd
like to be part of that organizing committee, please email the same
address.

I have sent this announcement to the main GCC, GDB, binutils, CGEN,
DejaGnu, newlib and glibc mailing lists. Please feel free to share
with any other groups that are appropriate.

This year, the Cauldron will form the closing weekend of the Wuthering
Bytes festival, a 10-day long celebration of free and open source
technology at the heart of the UK's "Northern Powerhouse".

You will also be aware that after this year's Cauldron we sent out a
questionnaire to get feedback to help improve future meetings. Here is
a summary

GNU Cauldron 2015 – summary of survey responses
===

80% of the survey respondents attended the 2015 GNU Tools Cauldron in
Prague.
70% of respondents have attended between 1 and 3 annual cauldrons.

Of those respondents who stated a preference 83% would like a 3 day
cauldron event spanning Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Of those respondents who stated a preference, 78% would like the
cauldron to be held in Europe with suggestions that cost and
accessibility are important factors, that rotating the continents
could share the pain of traveling and an observation that holding the
event in other countries, such as China and India, could help find new
developers, improve the diversity of the community and its presence
internationally.

Of those respondents who stated a preference, 59% would like the
cauldron to be held in June or July and 41% in August or September.
15 additional comments were submitted in relation to the time of year
the cauldron should be held, 80% of these comments supported the
cauldron being held outside the months of July and August to avoid hot
weather and vacation time.

Most respondents received sponsorship to cover some or all of their
costs of attending their last cauldron.

62 people responded to the question 'what benefits does attending the
GNU Tools Cauldron bring to your work?' Overwhelmingly, as members of
an international community, respondents appreciated, value and enjoy
the benefit of being able to meet in person people they communicate
with remotely thereby fostering the community and strengthening
working relationships through social interaction with each other.

The annual cauldron is seen by respondents as a platform for face to
face contact, community development, a chance to engage with new
members, to update technical knowledge and better understand the
community. Members articulate the benefits of discovering current
issues and gaining insight, listening to members of the community,
commenting on work being presented, contributing ideas and knowledge,
bringing lead developers together to gather consensus on key
development issues and standards, networking, providing individuals
and groups with an ability to share, coordinate and plan future work,
sparking debate and new ideas.

Suggestions by respondents to improve future events cover a suggestion
to include tutorial sessions for newer community members, recording
all sessions and posting on a dedicated you tube channel, ensuring the
accommodation and housekeeping provision caters for the weather
conditions and the circulation of a list of attendees to aide
formation of specialist interest groups. Overwhelmingly, respondents
wish microphones to be used and the acoustic quality of future
cauldrons to be improved. Many had experienced an inability to hear
speakers.

Respondents appreciate the informal and intimate size of the annual
cauldrons.

I look forward to seeing you in Hebden Bridge next September.

In the meantime, have a very happy Christmas and New Year.

GNU Tools Cauldron, 9-11 September 2016, Hebden Bridge UK

2016-08-08 Thread Jeremy Bennett
Hi all,

The GNU Tools Cauldron is barely a month away. This is reminder to sign
up if you wish to attend (which is free as always). Details of the
meeting and how to register here:

  https://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/cauldron2016

There is still room for more talks and BoF sessions, so please send in
your abstracts ASAP.

This year, the GNU Tools Cauldron immediately follows the first ever
LLVM Cauldron. An invent inspired by the GNU Tools Cauldron, free to
attend and open to anyone to speak.

Thanks to our generous sponsors, we have a joint gala reception between
the two conferences on Thursday evening (which is thus the closing
reception for the LLVM Cauldron and the welcome reception for the GNU
Tools Cauldron). This is an excellent opportunity for both communities
to mix informally.

This is in addition to the GNU Tools Cauldron dinner which will take
place as usual on the Saturday evening.

Both Cauldrons are part of the Wuthering Bytes festival, a 10-day long
celebration of free and open source technology at the heart of the UK's
"Northern Powerhouse", running from 2 September. Details at
http://wutheringbytes.com/.

I have sent this announcement to the main GCC, GDB, binutils, CGEN,
DejaGnu, newlib and glibc mailing lists. Please feel free to share
with any other groups that are appropriate.

I look forward to seeing you in Hebden Bridge next month.

GNU Tools @ LPC 2021: Program is published

2021-09-10 Thread Jeremy Bennett
Hi all,

The program for the GNU Tools Track at Linux Plumbers Conference is
published:

  https://linuxplumbersconf.org/event/11/sessions/109/

A total of 25 talks, lightning talks and BoFs plus our regular Q&A
session with the GCC steering committee and Glibc, GDB and binutils
stewards. The sessions run 07:00-11:00 Pacific Time from Monday 20
September - Thursday 23 September. This means there is no clash with the
LPC Toolchains and Kernel Microconference on Friday 24 September.

This is a virtual conference hosted using BigBlueButton. It isn't a free
conference - you'll need to sign up for a ticket (for all of LPC) to
participate. However the talks should also be live streamed free on YouTube.

  https://linuxplumbersconf.org/event/11/page/112-attend

Speakers should be contacted next week with details of their free
tickets. Contact me or sarah.c...@embecosm.com if you are a speaker and

Getting the ARC port reviewed and accepted

2013-09-30 Thread Jeremy Bennett

Hi all,

You've probably seen that Joern Rennecke (amylaar) has been pinging
repeatedly for help reviewing the ARC port:

  http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2013-09/msg02072.html

Joern is approved as a maintainer, and the tests have been reviewed and
approved (thanks to Mike Stump). However approximately a year since the
original submission, after making various changes suggested at that
time, the port itself still awaits review of acceptance.

We are in the curious position of a port that has a maintainer and
testsuite accepted, but no actual port.

What can we do to move this to completion for 4.9 stage 1? It is not the
smallest port (the ARC is a complex reconfigurable processor family),
but it has been in use for a long time, causes no regression errors in
other targets, and has been submitted by a long-standing contributor to GCC.

Advice on how to move this forward much appreciated.

Thanks,

he has submitted quite a large number of AVR related patches in the last
year.

I've discussed with Atmel's teams in Trondheim and Chennai and they are
very supportive of Joern Rennecke being added as a maintainer.

Best wishes,

Jeremy
