[Audyssey] What the sparcle?
Hello. I'm not sure how many people have been following Greymatter productions and reading Ryan's blog over at http://www.greymatterproductions.com/blog/ I must admit I was checking regularly until about may, but then got out of the habbit. Visiting the site again now however, I learn that Ryan is working on another project in addition to the Boxing game and developement sounds like it's chugging on very nicely. I am however a little uncertain what exactly this game is. ryan states in his blog that it's a side scrolling adaptation of a board game called sparcle which I believe Michael Feyr was involved in designing (ryan puts a link to the sparcle rules), I however haven't heard of the board game exactly and am rather uncertain about what form it takes. Mentions of goblins, ghosts, treasure and adventurers grabbed my interest of course, particularly when Ryan mentioned that the adaptation he's working on will be in the form of a side scroller, sinse a fantasy themeed side scroller possibly with rpg mechanics sounds distinctly interesting. However, sinse I've not heard of the original game, and am unsure how the rules work, I'm not exactly certain of the theme, complexity or anything else. For instance will there be a stats system? player classes? Weapons and armor to pick up and use? maybe magic or single use items like a ring of floatation to survive a fall or a wand of cold to freeze a fire pit? while Ryan's blog sounds fascinating, I think for those who are not familiar with the original game, some more explanation of how things work would be quite nice, if nothing else for anticipation value. While he has provided the link to the original 83 page manual, I'm slightly uncertain how much help that will be sinse I have never heard of the game, have no idea what a sparcle board may look like, (if there ever was! such a board), and also sinse the game is changing from turnbased boardgame to realtime side scroller, presumably with single player or multiplayer options, some of the rules may be different, or there may be additions made to the game. So, while I freely understand the game is still in developement and testing, It would be great if Ryan, or possibly Michael could say a little more about it just to give us unenlightened, or maybe non sparcling! an idea :D. actually ryan has not updated since the end of july now. I frequently check the blog ofcause but nothing since then. Though I am trying to get a foothold in the door and get my hands on the game so I can help with voices and sounds. my last message from ryan about a week or 2 ago was that he is working on network multiplayer support for the game and that is why no updates though he was vary vague and since it took him ages to respond I can only assume he is totally snowed. Re: [Audyssey] What the sparcle?
Hi Dark, I think this article is what you are looking for: Audyssey; Games Accessible to the Blind Issue 32: First Quarter, 2002 Edited by Michael Feir and Rebecca Sutton Due to unforeseen circumstances, I was unable to have the surprise I promised ready in time for inclusion in this issue of Audyssey. It will be ready shortly. The surprise was a game I have nearly completed which is a board-game equivalent to a classic side-scrolling video game. Two dice are all that is needed to play. Called Sparkle, the game puts up to six adventurers in a complex of stacked levels full of goblins, ghosts, trophies and other items. Players have to clear all levels of trophies in order to win. Goblins also try to obtain trophies. At the top of the complex are two exits where trophies must be deposited and where a dragon waits to destroy the incautious player. As a sort of consolation, I have written down a proposal on how a side-scrolling game could be made for blind people using stereo sound. Designing Sparkle has re-shaped and clarified my ideas on this so that I am now confident that they are feasible. I hope one or more game developers out there can put them to use, and that readers find my theories to be of interest. How A Sonic Side-scrolling Game Could Work By Michael Feir To make a game which offers all the challenge that sighted people experience would require a vary careful use of sounds. The basic scenario would take place on a line extending from left to right in front of the player. As the player moved along the line, sounds representing monsters, objects, obstacles, and so-on would pan from left to right or vise versa depending on the direction travelled. The volume of sounds could also be used either to denote the height of objects or make more obvious what is in the immediate vicinity and what is further away on either side. Pitch of sounds could be another height indicator. Each item in the game would generate a sound as long as it was within a certain range. For example, a pit which had to be jumped over might have a vast echoing sound associated with it. As one approached the pit, the sound would move closer to the centre of the line in front of the player. If the player did not jump at the right time, he/she would fall into the pit. Multiple layers of sound would be required for such a game to work. There would probably have to be at least two layers of sound for representing stationary features such as pits, water, raised platforms which could be jumped onto, etc. There would also have to be channels for object sounds. A good example would be a heart beeting as a symbol denoting a healing item which would increase health. A magic sword might have the whisper of its name as a locater, or a sound of a sword being drawn. A chest might have a thumping sound. When it comes to enemies, things don't necessarily get all that much more complicated. Enemies would have their own movement and identification sounds. A monster might breathe heavily or growl. Flying enemies would have flapping sounds and/or different chirps. Combat would work similarly. An attacker would swing at a player from the side where it is located. A monster on the right might attack a player, for instance. The attack approach sound might be a swoosh or fierce roar. The player would have an instant to dodge to the left out of the zone which would be hit by the attack. The player's attacks would similarly extend a certain range at a certain speed. The player would have to learn to judge how far and fast his/her attack moved and make certain that the enemy wouldn't move out of range in time to avoid the attack. A flying projectile could be blocked by moving slightly in its direction so that the player's shield was facing the right way. As a more complex option, different pitched attack approach sounds could represent different heights which could be matched by players using the arrow keys or joystick to raise or lower their shield. Players could attack along a few levels of height represented by pitch and attempt to score a critical hit or shoot at flying enemies represented at higher pitches. These approaches have been used in other games for the sighted, and with modern technology, it should be possible to represent all this sonically. Shades Of Doom and Monkey Business certainly prove that the capability exists. In the case of the game Sparkle which I have almost completed, events might happen on different levels of a multi-level complex. Depicting events outside the level that the player is on would be somewhat problematic. The best approach would likely be to have a voice similar to those in games like Gauntlet. In the case of my game, it would say things like: "The haven on level three is under attack!", or "A goblin on level four has rolled a magic boulder." The number of players would be pretty much limited to two on a single computer. Each could have separate controls on the keyboard or use joysticks. The tricky part would

Hi Jim, Agreed. For one thing soda usually comes in a bottle or can, and won't spill inside your duffel bag provided it isn't opened. For another sodas taste better cold, but can be just as easily drank when warm too. Milk shakes usually don't come in cans or bottles, and are served up in a glass or cup. To top it off since they are a dairy product they have to be kept cold or they will spoil quickly. For reality sake, if nothing else, milk shakes just wouldn't work here. :D On 9/18/12, Jim Kitchen wrote: > Hi Shaun, > > I am sorry, but I just don't think that it would be a good idea to throw a > milk shake into a leather duffel bag. [Audyssey] Fantasy board game was: What the sparcle?
Hi Phil. Thanks, that makes a lot more sense. Looking at the rules, I'm actually surprised that nobody has coded a straight up board game version of this, sinse everything is there, and it would be far quicker if the computer did all the enemy moving etc than having to constantly reedit a text document sent betwene the players which seems a little long winded to me. It's a little ironic sinse earlier I remember Travis asking for suggestions for a board game he could make in audio, and I suggested a fantasy one without any idea that Michael had already! created a very comprehensive set of rules for a fantasy board game. Perhaps this is a project someone could undertake in addition to Ryan's side scrolling version which will obviously be a much different game, sinse myself I'd like to see both iterations, indeed just as the side scroller could expand once it was programmed, so might the board game sinse the ability to have the computer manage movements of enemies and such would allow for far more potential variation. Re: [Audyssey] Soda Wars
Hi Jim, Sure they still make Moxie. Its hard to find in a lot of places, but can usually be found in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and other New England states. Its a regional brand that primarily sells to North-Eastern states, and is sometimes purchased and sold in stores across the country in limited supply. As for the taste the various Moxie sodas are sort of sweet and sour. Have a bit of a tangy taste and gave me a bitter after taste after finishing it. Of course, there have been several different flavors such as cherry cream, blue cream, orange cream, etc. Its been years since I tried it so who knows what flavors they have now or if they dropped any, but the taste is pretty unique. Let's just say its an acquired taste and leave it at that. Well, as far as planning ahead that's what outlines are for. When I was learning to program in college I use to hate writing outlines, writing down notes on everything, etc before starting to program. However, years later I find it useful because I don't have to question what I'm doing next because its right there in the outline. If I want to change something I can, but at least I have a outline of the basic idea before I start. :D On 9/18/12, Jim Kitchen wrote: > Hi Thomas, > > Can you describe what Moxie tastes like? Re: [Audyssey] What the sparcle?
Hi Dark et al, Sparkle is a pretty deep game and unfortunately nothing I can truly do full justice to in a few paragraphs. Still, I'll try. Basically, there will be a complex of 6 stacked levels, each of which contains a variety of obstacles such as walls to jump or climb over, pits full of gems, helpful or harmful buildings with which the player can interact, and a full cast of fantasy characters from goblins to dragons. The player's goal will be to race through the complex collecting trophies and trying to deposit them at the top of the complex before the goblins do. Doing so earns points and positive events for the players, while failing to do so causes negative events to occur. I should point out, as well, that this game will be a true side-scroller with vertical movement, gravity, etc. Jumping, for example, is not a true/false variable, but is rather an analogue command that takes advantage of the second dimension. There are few things more fun right now than leaping off the top of a wall to the bottom of a pit to see just how long it takes. Less fun is climbing all the way back out of that pit. Michael and I have discussed the possibility of adding in stats before, and it's something I'm interested in, but right now, I'm still laying down the basic functionality. The player can navigate basic levels, collect items, and use them, but that's about it. As Shaun said, I'm working on network support right now, as I don't want to end up accidentally designing the game for single player and then having to start over. I'm happy to answer any questions you or anyone else has, but as Shaun also accurately pointed out, things are a bit hectic at work right now, so I might not respond as quickly as I would like. I do still check the list, however, and I'll answer as soon as I can. So, while I freely understand the game is still in developement and testing, It would be great if Ryan, or possibly Michael could say a little more about it just to give us unenlightened, or maybe non sparcling! an idea :D. Hi Ryan. Side scroller meets rpg? two of my favourite things together, sounds awsome! indeed, I've always been sorry I couldn't play such games graphically. I do however have a couple of questions. While I understand the need to build the game as a four player game to begin with, it would be nice to have a single player option, either for getting used to the game, or just when nobody else is online, perhaps either by having some computer controled opponents, or indeed none at all. As regards stats, I'm quite content to wait and see what can be added there, though either way I'm fascinated by the concept, particularly the use of analogue jumping and full 2D mechanics. How exactly were you planning to simulate enemy attacks? thus far in audio, the side scrollers we've had haven't really allwed for the possibility of dodging or blocking enemy attacks, sinse enemies attack as soon as your close, meaning that it's all about fast reactions. Are you however planning to follow Michael's initial idea by having enemy attacks with sonic clues of their own that the player must respond to, in addition to the sound of the enemy's position? Did you have any plans on adding weapons to vary the fights? not necessarily statistically, but in terms of attack speed and damage? If your on the architecture of the game at the moment, i'd be interested to know how that is working or what plans you have, sinse this is sounding like a very unique game indeed! Oh, and btw, I'll be glad to provide voice acting when you get to that stage too. Re: [Audyssey] What the sparcle?
Hi Dark, There are a lot of games--though none in the AG community--that have done a better job of incorporating RPG and side scroller than I plan to. While I plan to have stats at some point, I hadn't planned on a fully-fledged experience system and the like. As I said, though, that's further down on the list of things to do, however it pans out. I completely agree with you about having a single-player option, and I plan to have that in the game. However, the mechanics of single player versus multi-player overlap quite a lot, and it will be easier for me to design the full system and just make single player a component of that. For example, you could make a single player walk very easily. If the player presses right arrow, make him walk to the right. This is just fine in a single player game because it doesn't send data to the server. For a multiplayer game, though, you would want something a bit different. In that instance, you would create a false player for each of the other people playing the game, and have those false players act on a more perfunctory set of commands. Instead of saying player 2 took a step, player 2 took another step, player 2 took a third step, you would say player 2 started moving, and when he stopped, send a command that said player 2 stopped moving. If I build the player so that he acts like he's a multiplayer from the beginning, I won't have to rebuild him when I actually get to the multiplayer portion of the game. All of that will be done already. It's much easier to convert from multiplayer to single player than it is to go from single player to multiplayer. With regard to attack mechanics, I don't want to give too much away, but suffice it to say that there will be actual attacks that you can block, duck, jump over, etc. I want enemies to have a lot more personality than they thus far have in audio games. Think about the robots in MegaMan X that threw their shield at you, then reeled it back in with a chain. In audio, you might represent that with a traveling whoosh, followed by the sound of the shield scraping back toward them across the ground. Though that particular example will likely not be in the game, there will be things with that and greater levels of complexity. The original game calls for sword strokes, arrows, and various magic spells. The sword itself has a number of attacks at its disposal, and I intend to update those for the side scrolling genre. Other than that, I don't know yet. I'm not sure what you're asking about in terms of architecture. Aside from run, jump, climb, fall, fight, what are you wondering? Thanks for the offer of voice acting. I may take you up on that when I switch from placeholder to the real thing.
