Ecolog-L Internship at Project Northwoods Nature Center (Wisconsin)

2025-03-21 Thread Project Northwoods
Project Northwoods Nature Center, located in Northern Wisconsin, United
States, is now accepting applications for our summer internship program.
Although this program is geared towards college students seeking
experience, you do not need to be in an academic program to participate.

More information can be found by visiting:
https://projectnorthwoodswi.weebly.com/get-involved.html

Project Northwoods aims to conserve the ecology and culture of the
Wisconsin Northwoods through education, research and global outreach. Our
programs educate people of all ages, including early learners, K-12,
college students and adults. Our research projects utilize the knowledge of
locals and long-time seasonal visitors, and benefit the many threatened and
endangered species of flora and fauna that are found in the Northwoods,
some of which have geographic ranges no larger than the boundaries of these
specific forests. Our outreach programs educate people from around the
world, especially focusing on tourists to the area, about the importance of
these forests, the native species and the rich cultures found throughout
the area. Any opportunity to get people outside and to appreciate the
out-of-doors is utilized to teach about our local environment and its role
in the global ecological community.

Some projects that are a focus of Project Northwoods include:

   -

Research on native and exotic species, especially focusing on species of
concern, threatened and endangered species of all taxa. We especially focus
on snakes and turtles, but have other projects underway as well.
   -

Educating children, local residents and tourists about the importance of
the unique Northwoods environment through workshops, citizen science
projects, a nature center and outdoor activity opportunities.
   -

Encouraging people of all ages to get outside and enjoy the natural
world around them, thus promoting good health and an appreciation for
   stewardship of the Northwoods.
   -

Developing an appreciation for the rich culture of the Northwoods,
especially as it pertains to the natural world.

Project Northwoods facilities include:

   -

A variety of museum exhibits (taxidermy, seashells, rocks, mammalian
   skulls, etc.).
   -

A collection of live animals, many with special needs. We focus on
reptiles but also have small mammals, invertebrates, birds and fishes.
   -

A large kids’ discovery play area with STEM books, toys, games and
   activities.
   -

A building just waiting to be turned into our classroom center.
   -

160-acre lakefront forested property for hiking, workshops and natural
   play.

This position is unpaid. College credit can be arranged through your
university or college.

Please check out our website listed above and email
projectnorthwood...@gmail.com with any questions or to send your resume and
a letter of interest.

Ecolog-L Northeast Wildlife field course May 18-31 spaces still available

2025-03-21 Thread McDonald, John E.
The Northeast Section of The Wildlife Society, in cooperation with Paul Smith's
College, will be hosting our 13th annual 2-week Wildlife Field Course at Paul
Smith's College, New York, May 18-31, 2025. The course is capped at 20
students, but there are several spots left for interested students. The
website registration info mentions a March 15 deposit deadline, but we are
still taking registrations until all the spots are filled. Please contact me
at the email below with questions or to reserve a spot.

Please visit the course website for details and application materials:
http://wildlife.org/ne-section/about/student-field-course/

The course fee is $1200 and includes 3 undergraduate or graduate credits
through Paul Smith's College (PSC) and room and board for the 2 weeks. The
course is housed at the PSC Campus on 14,000 acres of forests, lakes, and
streams amidst the 6 million acres of the Adirondack Park. The course
emphasizes hands-on experience with basic field techniques (small mammal
trapping, bird point counts, habitat sampling, radiotelemetry, etc.) and small
group work organized around the theme of conducting a biological inventory.
We also provide hunter education training and certification in Project Wild.
The course is led by practicing wildlife biologists and ecologists who
volunteer their time to serve as instructors providing great networking
opportunities and career perspectives during evening discussion sessions. We
usually have 20+ guest instructors from various state and federal agencies,
consulting firms, and universities. The November/December 2017 issue of The
Wildlife Professional (www.wildlife.org) has a short
article on the course which is accessible from the course website (note: the
course was hosted in Vermont for the first 12 years). Several chapters of The
Wildlife Society offer full or partial scholarships to eligible students, too.

Enrollment is capped at 20 students; we accept undergrad or grad students from
any college or university, you do not need to be enrolled in a wildlife major
to be eligible and we also accept unenrolled students who have already
completed a degree and are looking to gain field skills. Please do not reply
to this email with questions but contact me at:
nefieldcou...@gmail.com.
