Ecolog-L PhD advertisement

2025-02-18 Thread Emilee Benjamin
Hello,

Can you please advertise this PhD. Let me know if I am supposed to upload this
on the website instead. I know some things have changed about the listserv on
the new website, and I could not seem to find where to post it.

Cheers,

Emilee

A fully funded PhD position is available at the University of Auckland (New
Zealand), Vorobyev’s lab ( https://ecv-lab.blogs.auckland.ac.nz ) Contact:
m.vorob...@auckland.ac.nz
Project title: Strike accuracy and monocular stereopsis in mantis shrimp.
Mantis shrimps have the fastest strike among aquatic animals. The impact of a
peacock mantis shrimp strike is comparable to that of a .22 calibre bullet -
powerful enough to break aquarium glass. Mantis shrimps are vicious fighters
and hunters whose survival depends critically on the strike accuracy. To
deliver an accurate strike, mantis shrimps need to judge distance accurately
and, hence, to have good vision. Indeed, mantis shrimps have the most
sophisticated eyes in the world. For colour vision, they use 12 spectrally
distinct photoreceptors, and are the only group of animals known to perceive
circular polarisation of light. It was suggested that, in order to judge
distance, mantis shrimps use monocular stereopsis by comparing images in two
acute zones of one eye in the same way as other animals use two eyes for
binocular stereopsis. So far, monocular stereopsis has not been demonstrated in
any animal. The aim of this project is to test the monocular stereopsis
hypothesis.
Successful candidate must have research experience and be prepared to do field
work on the Great Barrier reef.
Position is available from March 1, 2025

Ecolog-L Tropical Ecology Field School in Belize - Deadline 27 FEB 25

2025-02-18 Thread Jut Wynne (via ecolog-l list)
Tropical Ecology Field School in Belize
20 June - 06 July 2025

https://edabroad.nau.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgramAngular&id=11156

This immersive, field-intensive course offers a unique opportunity to learn and
apply wildlife sampling techniques in two of Belize’s most ecologically rich
regions: the newly established Maya Forest Corridor and the tropical forest
uplands of the Cayo District. Students will dive into the heart of Central
America’s tropical ecosystems, studying wildlife corridors, identifying
tropical plants, and applying hands-on sampling techniques for birds, small
mammals (including bats), primates, crocodiles, and cave-dwelling insects.
Participants will also learn how to collect, process, and analyze
meteorological and trail camera data from caves. A primary goal of this field
school is to first train students as field technicians, and then guide them in
applying their skills to collect data as part of an expeditionary team. In
addition to developing essential field skills including wildlife identification
and sampling, students will gain a deeper understanding concerning how
conservation biologists study biodiversity in one of Central America’s most
expansively protected countries. Field sites are located in diverse tropical
ecosystems ranging from pine savannas and cohune palm ridges to broad-leaf and
upland tropical forests, as well as provide the opportunity to explore ancient
Maya archaeological sites.

Presentations and training sessions will be led by conservation biologists,
naturalists, community leaders, and cultural experts, who will share their
extensive knowledge and field-based expertise. This fast-paced, physically
demanding, and mentally stimulating course will require students to traverse
challenging backcountry terrain carrying field packs (20-30 pounds) for
distances of up to 5 miles round-trip. All course assignments will focus on the
documentation and synthesis of lectures and fieldwork. This will include data
collection and analysis, use of smartphone apps for plant and wildlife
identification, photo-documentation, and other relevant tasks. By the end of
this course, students will have contributed to ongoing research projects and
gained a more comprehensive understanding of the scientific, practical, and
cultural elements that shape successful biodiversity research and conservation
strategies in the Neotropics.

This program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Students not
attending Northern Arizona University may take this course for credit.

Ecolog-L Final Reminder - Interdisciplinary Postdoc Fellowship in Biogeochemical Ecology (2.5 years in Prague)

2025-02-18 Thread via ecolog-l list
This is a reminder that February 28 is the application deadline for our
full-time postdoctoral position (2.5-year contract) in biogeochemical ecology
at the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague.

RESEARCH TEAM:

The successful candidate will join the research team of Markéta Zárybnická at
the Dept. of Ecology in collaboration with Vladislav Chrastný at the Dept. of
Environmental Geosciences, both at the Czech University of Life Sciences in
Prague, Czech Republic.

Research topic:

The research is part of the project "Small mammals as key indicators of
sublethal impacts of air pollution and metal(loid) deposition in terrestrial
ecosystems" funded by the Czech Science Foundation. This project explores the
bioaccumulation and origin of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) throughout the
food chain, aiming to provide robust evidence for establishing small mammals as
reliable bioindicators. It also investigates how pollution impacts the
dynamics, demography, and health conditions of small mammal populations. To
achieve these objectives, we utilize long-term data and specimen collection
from the area known as the "European Black Triangle" (the Ore Mountains study
area in northern Czechia), supplemented with contemporary samples from diverse
sources and contaminant levels.

Job responsibilities:
Writing and publishing scientific papers as the lead author.
Performing data management and statistical analyses, including multivariate and
GLM statistical analyses (using R, Canoco, or similar tools).
Preparing biological samples for chemical concentration and isotope analyses.
Assisting with Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy
(ICP-OES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) to measure
metal(loid) concentration and conduct isotope analyses.
Assisting with collecting biological samples in the field.

The postdoc will examine biogeochemical patterns in various types of biological
tissues, considering diverse pollution sources, species, and tissue types, as
well as trace the origins of specific PTEs, particularly lead (Pb). The goal is
to understand patterns and relationships among chemical elements and their
interactions with environmental factors. The postdoc will be encouraged to
present findings at conferences and actively contribute to the development of
international collaborations. Teaching opportunities are also available.

Requirements:

PhD in environmental chemistry, biochemistry, applied chemistry, or fields
related to chemistry, environmental toxicology, ecology, zoology, environmental
sciences, or similar disciplines. Candidates with PhD in food science and
biotechnology are also encouraged to apply.

Demonstrated ability to conduct research from developing scientific questions
to producing peer-reviewed publications.

Proficiency in using R and other similar software, particularly multivariate
analyses and generalized linear models.

Experience in laboratory analyses and field collection of biological samples is
desirable.

We offer:

Gross salary of 55,000 CZK/month (approx. 2,180 EUR as of Jan 2025), which is
approximately 40,700 CZK/month net. The median gross salary in the Czech
Republic in the first quarter of 2024 was 38,500 CZK/month.

The starting date for the position is July 2025, or as soon as thereafter
possible.

Health insurance and (Czech) social security are standard parts of the
employment contract.

25 days of paid holiday per year + 5 sick days.

Motivational bonus payments for high-quality publications.

Funding for travel to conferences and international workshops.

State-of-the-art laboratory equipment, including spectrometry and mass
spectrometry instruments, advanced computing equipment and software, and access
to journals and scientific databases.

Experience from three study areas across Czechia, primarily the unique Ore
Mountains study area, which was historically affected by severe air pollution.

Comfortable office space and allowance for meals.

International working environment (the working language is English), located on
a green and spacious campus in Suchdol on the outskirts of Prague, 12 km from
Prague Airport, with a 20-minute commute to Prague city center by public
transportation or bike, and a 15-minute walk to several protected natural
areas. The campus has various sports facilities, including a swimming pool,
gym, athletic track, and indoor and outdoor playfields. The university also
offers affordable on-campus accommodation, as well as holiday accommodation in
the mountains outside Prague. Prague is one of the safest cities in the world
with excellent public transportation, international accessibility, and
healthcare.

2025-02-18 Thread Farabaugh, Lily (via ecolog-l list)
The US NSF Center for Analysis and Prediction of Pandemic
Expansion (APPEX) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
is actively calling for seed proposals for new working groups. The deadline is
in a couple of weeks (Feb 28th), but the application is a very light lift.
Propose something! Tell your friends! Come get to
know us!

We are excited to announce our first semi-annual competition for new Seed Ideas
for Working Groups-hearing from you what new and exciting projects APPEX should
focus on next and recruiting new participants to form Working Groups around
these seed ideas. This can be something you want to do yourself with our help
or an idea you've always thought "someone should do," even if you don't want
that someone to be you. If you have an exciting idea for how to study pandemic
expansion, we want to work with you!
Our goal is to have completed discussion around these first-round seed
suggestions by the end of February 2025. Please add your ideas early and come
back often to comment on/discuss ideas from others!
Our process for Working Group Proposals is a little different from what you
might be used to at other Institutes and Centers, but we're hoping it will be
fun and easy!
Take a look at the details here.
