Hi, I'm Tal, from Israel. I've joined mainly because I found a bug while editing texts in Writer, in an Left-to-Right language (Hebrew), which hasn't got any response for over 10 months, so I want to promote, fix, or patch it ( https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=121193). Added myself to Directory of Volunteers & localization volunteers in Confluence Wiki; Completed Infrastructure module (level 2). Now I think I need to refresh my C++ skills :) Keep up the good work, which is vital on the Mac for Hebrew/Arabic native speakers, Tal
Building for MAC OS, gcc 4.0
Following the Building guide for MAC, I need help. My gcc version is 4.2, and the configure script outputs a warning that it needs 4.0. Is it a blocker? Thank you Herbert, I'm using Xcode 3.2.6, with gcc 4.2, so I'll wait with your branch. Thanks for the invite. Today I've managed to install & switch to gcc 4.0 using MacPorts (I'll update the Guide, when I'm done). [Mac] [Build] python headers not found
Hi, I'm trying to follow the Building Guide for Mac, and not I'm struggling with Python: the configuration shell script can't find the Pyhon header files (python.h, ...). ... checking which python to use... compiling against MacOSX10.4u.sdk (python > version 2.3) > checking Python.h usability... no > checking Python.h presence... no > checking for Python.h... no > configure: error: Python headers not found I installed [mac]port python33, and switched to it, and I know where its headers folder is located. I tried to change configure file, but it keeps reseting so I can't change anything there (e.g. the PYTHON_CFLAG var). I wonder, would a ln -s from the system python version to the current release headers would help the configure script to find the headers, finally. Any help would be appreciated. Tal

Herbert, thank you updating me on the SVN update, which updated Python definitions in configure.in; it makes things much more easier now, since Jürgen points now to the current version of Python. Would you share with us how do you track SVN updates? do you use Eclipse, or other tool? cmd-line? For now, I've decided to sync & build AOO401 tag, which is more stable, I guess. Hi, I get an error while building (below). Can anyone guide me how to check its source, and how can I get a more detailed error report? or... how to try to compile only this part in Xcode 3.2.6? Thank you Herbert, that helped me to solve the issue. ccache gcc was looking for Mac OSX 10.4u SDK, so ... instead of installing 10.4u SDK (xcode already installed), I created a symbolic link to 10.5. Guess what, it works! Soon, I'll publish my configuration, before I add a few notes to the Mac Building Guide. I found the Terminal's output to be satisfactory. If the build reports errors in a specific module, enter that folder, build with more details, and try to fix the errors first. E.g.: cd ../soltools build verbose=1 to build the project again: source MacOSXX86Env.Set.sh cd instsetoo_native build --from soltools (problematic module where the previous build aborted at) or... (?) build --prepare (?) build –all -P2 --html --html_path /Users/$USER/Sites/ Build time: started ~14:15 – 00:00 = ~10 When the build is complete, opened DMG package present at cd unxmacxi.pro/Apache_OpenOffice_SDK/dmg/install/en-US/ and installed into a folder of my choice. [Mac] Development environment
I'm desperate for some mentoring regarding setting up the dev environment. on the Mac. Herbert, can you direct me at the right direction, such as which IDE, what project settings, do you build a module externally, etc. Notes: I'm used to Eclipse; does Xcode have any benefits? Currently I'm oriented towards fixing BiDi parts (/sw? com.core.suncom.sun.star.text.XText? ... started reading the dev guide), but maybe later I could help with the Mac OSX10.6 branch too. A small info request, and suggestion, regarding the bug tracking process: The "How to file a good Issue [in Bugzilla] ( https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/HowToFileIssue) end with this sentence: > "[...], then press "Commit". (1) What happens NOW, after a bug is created? -- Does someone review it and assign it, or should the reporter notify a mailing list, next to promote it? Do BugZilla Admins review the bugs? (it happened to me a few times) I'd recommend extend the above mentioned paragraph with this info, and overview the process earlier within the Wiki page. Privet Nikolai, I checked your problem, and the date opens on my AOO 4.0.1 as 9.4. The problem you described could a result of cells with a function to show the date of today (=now()). Please see the attached ODS file, for example of a function to always show today, and a regular date, below it (double-click on cells to see what's under the hood). In addition to Kay's suggestions, I'd like to suggest to drop the [redundant] line "Click here to download for:" in the green box, and the line "Choose an OS, then the language" in the gray box, which you suggested; we can solve it at a programmable way (e.g. disable 2nd drop-down until 1st drop-down has a valid selection). Also, the gray box could appear only after clicking "Get a different version", which stands for other version, language, or OS. Great work :)

FYI: at Sourceforge, the big green download button downloads the 4.0.1 version. It happened to me, and I almost installed 4.0.1 twice on my computer. Later, I noticed the dark red error message on the sourceforge page, which states that "the 4.1.0/binaries/...86.exe file can't be found or isn't available. ..." I guess other users will find this annoying, and not all of them will find the folder browsing any comfortable. Other than that, Congratulations on the 4.1 release. Hi, I've migrated /test-he site into /he, in SVN, as well as the corresponding templates/he folder, BUT it seems that the staging server serves an older version of the templates, with "/test-he/..." paths, instead of "/he/...". clearing the cache didn't do the trick of fixing this oddity. Any suggestions what can I do in order to force the server to refresh the templates it uses on http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/he/? In brief: Currently, a translation is released when it reaches 100%. There were a few ideas when to include and exclude a translation in a release (different for major, and minor). Some suggestions where to continue to release even if there's no 100%, and there's an active community of translator for a language. Rob suggested even to get an OK from the trans. community of each language. Rules should be simple, though, as Jürgen Schmidt commented, since it cause effort to manage & track too many rules, in addition to manually build the translation releases each time. Andrea proposed a more flexible strategy, which emphasizes the importance of continuing the language support over versions (at least in minor releases), who may find it annoying, for example, that there was Hebrew support in AOO 3.3, but not in AOO 3.4 (grr@#$!!). + That's a strong point, TMHO. + In addition to Andrea's concern about being in touch with the community of translators, as a solution, maybe we should build a list of private emails. For example, I wonder if translators would prefer to add their private email to the cwiki page of volunteers, instead of just subscribing to the L10N list. Update: Languages selection dropdown is now complete. Developers and translators are called to edit the brand.mdtext variables (see instruction below), to fit their language, and edit the /templates/brand.html template with the correct phrasing for their language option within the select box. Note: "Native Languages" link from the menu would probably be removed in the future, when the language dropdown would be more familiar and adopted. Thanks; I'm aware of that Andrea. I had no choice, since I had to tweak the
global brand.html template, after I didn't find a way to override it in
localized sites.
I published it in the global template only after testing it a bit at the
Hebrew site, first.

If by "others that need to go there" you refer to developers, I think they can easily examine the source code: I've added a comment next to each , stating the language in English. The same goes with "choose a website language:". I prefer to show the current language, as a sign that other languages exist. There is also a better chance that people can understand the single word "English" than the longer phrase above, if they are not fluent in English.

can quickly select their language, if available. This affects all NL sites.
Developers & translators are called to add 2 new variables to
{lang}/brand.mdtext, and change according to their language:
selectedlang: en *
language: Language **
(* change to your language code; ** translate title to your language)
For example, choose Hebrew from the dropdown, or see /he/brand.mdtext, or
/xx/brand.mdtext.
Note: "Native Languages" link from the menu would probably be removed in
the future, when the language dropdown would be more familiar and adopted.

I suggest to dropoff the scrollbars from the News & Blog posts areas, on the Homepage, and unite these areas into one zone, that notifies about, well, anything, whether latest news, posts, wanted volunteers, important upcoming dates, events, etc. Personally, I don't think the inner/frame scrollbars help much. In fact, they adhere reading, and I find it hard to work with 3 scrollbars on this rather simple homepage, in order to read a just a few lines (usually, the latest blog posts & news don't contain more than 5 items), hence, the scrollbars are redundant. I reordered the language list, and fixed the spacing to line separator. Take into account that styles may change in the future, as there are requests to use Bootstrap library, or sorts. [PROPOSAL] Enhance Statistics
Hi, is there a way to extend the stats page a bit? (http://www.openoffice.org/stats/countries.html) For example, I wish I could see these data: Component x Version matrix: Hebrew, Full Installation (4.1.0; Released Dec 2013): 23,000 downloads | (4.1.1; Aug 2014): 10,000 | ... Hebrew, Language Pack (4.1.0; Released Dec 2013): 34,000 downloads | (4.1.1; Aug 2014): 14,000 | ... and ... Hebrew, Full Installation timeline (month by month download/installation counts) Hebrew, Language Pack timeline (month by month download/installation counts) This would allow me/us to see whether good translation improves downloads, and whether people appreciate our work and upgrade AOO, or... abandon AOO. I believe this could be done using Google Analytics, and then share a link to viewing the [public] data, instead of updating the stats page. Tal

I don't see an automatic way to do it, but look at the numbers next to each
file (right), these are individual file downloads, so you can sum only the
downloads you're interested in.
Notes:
* hover your mouse on the name, it will show the full file name after a few
seconds, as a tooltip.
** I notice that file fingerprints are also considered a download (MD5,
sha, ...), so ignore them; you need to look sum only on the rows with the
LARGE numbers, that usually represent the installation and the language
pack downloads (the numbers next to the "...install{.exe/.dmg/.gz}" files).

After skimming the native-language status page, I found these issues: (1) while the website is "maintained", and the software is "current", people may think that their help isn't needed. Here are a few phrasings that could improve this misconception: "maintained; more volunteers are welcome", or "maintained; a few volunteers", or "maintained by 3 volunteers" etc. (2) In addition to the website and software columns, I suggest to add a Help System column, which can really lag behind the software translation, and isn't apparent in the current table. Thanks Rob for the detailed download statistics. The CSV is very useful for the English version, though it's less detailed for localized versions). The cross-over curve between new & previous versions interests me; maybe I'll look more into it, in the future. That might explain that, while another reason could be developers installing older versions on VM, for testing. TODO(?) - move current version to an archive folder, upon release of newer version (say AOO 5). That would make previous version links obsolete, and maybe allow users to understand there's a new version, somehow.
