It was agreed to keep the incubator branding for additional languages
too: having it for some languages only would break the assumptions we
make in some scripts. 4.0 (or 3.4.2 if needed for some reasons) will be
our first "non-incubator" release.

Shall we then change the "Please help with translation" announcement on
the relevant home pages into something like

-1 For danish I would prefer not. We announced several month ago that a
release was close...

OK, then I'd consider it for the other languages, which still have the
original announcement.

And I also understood from the very detailed license discussions, that we
are not allowed to publicly announce dev-builds...but maybe this is a
special case (as I have been trying to push for a long time).

We don't LINK to unreleased builds, but of course they are not secret.
So something like the text I proposed (i.e., inviting the visitor to
volunteer in testing them and linking to the l10n mailing list, not to
the builds) is perfectly acceptable.

  Andrea.

That is cool!

The KILLALL is bad, but if you do not log in as root onto your

Re: [PROPOSAL] New Apache OpenOffice 4 logo proposals...

2012-12-22 Thread janI
I am no designer, but I have tried to make a suggestion to better explain
what I mean.

The current proposals all have squares / circles etc. and apart from the
original similarity with windows8 that has a special signal value.

A surface (square/circle etc) especially with a border, signal:
  - limitation or positive a product that fullfills a single purpose
  - closeness or positive a product the specialize in one function

AOO is in my mind much more, we are open at levels where normal products
can only dream to go:
- AOO is used in nearly every corner of the earth.
- AOO is open for translation to no matter how small a language group
- AOO is open for developers who want to hack their own specialized versions
- AOO is open for repackaging supplying the core of a wider extented
product.
I could go on.

I think it is important that our logo signals this freedom and openess
after all we are OPEN office.

I know my design is not professional, it is NOT meant to be so please dont
judge it on that. It is simply a "thought out of the box", and hopefully it
can trigger some ideas.

You can see my "proposal" here:

Have a nice christmas, whereever you are in the world.

For general information, I have added a new bug 121536, regarding problems
with translations.

The content of the msg text in the source code is non translatable due to
ambiguity.

[xxx] means normally a variable will be inserted here
example: "[Time]" may NOT be translated but "[l]" (for load) should be
translated.

means normally XML and should not be translated:
example: "hello" may NOT be translated but
"-p" should be translated.

$xxx means normally a variable will be inserted here
example: "$id" may NOT be translated but "$100" dollar should be translated.

Now try to explain that to our translators, it is easier to change the
source texts !

If nobody objects I will solve this bug, alongside with the oracle changes.

What about to write these special variables with "nt" as postfix. Adding
this to the variable name inicates that no translation is wanted or must
not happen at all.

To stick with your example from above it would look like this:

[xxx] translation wanted
[xxx-nt] no translation wanted

 translation wanted
 no translation wanted

$xxx translation wanted
$xxx-nt translation wanted

Maybe a possible way around the problem?

Yes, please no differences within a release. Otherwise it's more

Thank You!
There was a problem that in code from Hanya this line create a null object in
linux (with LibreOffice):

oSounMgr = CreateUnoService("com.sun.star.media.Manager_GStreamer")

For oPlayer1 I have control of stopping but for timidity I dont know how to
control command line program after start. Killall is needed for stopping sound
(from pus button on right side of card).

I have only LibreOffice in my Mint system, AOO is on WinVista system (on same
hard ware).

First my idea was to create some midi controlled animation (for all kind of
documents) but it was too difficult to find interface which can read a MIDI
note from the media player to a animation macro. Otherwise it seems to be
system depended how long it take for first sound is in the air. So there is
timing problem without such an interface.

So there is just merely random moves of drawing objects and non syncron sounds.

[wiki help] sysop help needed !!

2012-12-22 Thread janI
Before I upgrade our database (and system) to 1.20.2 I would like to clean
some of the dead stuff.

I would apriciate if some of the sysop could help me with
- looking at special page/unused files and delete them (during upload
people are warned this will happen)
- looking at special page/unsed categories and delete them (WATCH out, at
least one russian template has a remark "please do not delete")

there are too much for me alone.

Once it has been done, I will clean it from the database, so we have a
slimmer system, without loosing any information.

Jan.

It was agreed to keep the incubator branding for additional languages
too: having it for some languages only would break the assumptions we
make in some scripts. 4.0 (or 3.4.2 if needed for some reasons) will be
our first "non-incubator" release.

Yes, please no differences within a release. Otherwise it's more
complicate to make all these exceptions in the scripts.

For AOO 4.0 this will change, for sure - and some things more.

Marcus

With the discussion of moving our official Apache "dist" location, it
was suggested that we keep these additions "branded", i.e. with
incubator, as the original 3.4.1 packs. So, these new languages will be
tagged as "incubator" too.

Shall we then change the "Please help with translation" announcement on
the relevant home pages into something like

-1 For danish I would prefer not. We announced several month ago that a
release was close...

OK, then I'd consider it for the other languages, which still have the
original announcement.

And I also understood from the very detailed license discussions,
that we
are not allowed to publicly announce dev-builds...but maybe this is a
special case (as I have been trying to push for a long time).

We don't LINK to unreleased builds, but of course they are not secret.
So something like the text I proposed (i.e., inviting the visitor to
volunteer in testing them and linking to the l10n mailing list, not to
the builds) is perfectly acceptable.

Andrea.

Logo #1 puts a santa hat on the orb and tweaks the colors of the

I have nothing a little extra work, if I other for much more work...no

or do you see it differently ?

The content of the msg text in the source code is non translatable due
 to
 ambiguity.

[xxx] means normally a variable will be inserted here
example: "[Time]" may NOT be translated but "[l]" (for load) should be
 translated.

means normally XML and should not be translated:
example: "hello" may NOT be translated but
 "-p" should be translated.

$xxx means normally a variable will be inserted here
example: "$id" may NOT be translated but "$100" dollar should be
 translated.

Now try to explain that to our translators, it is easier to change the
 source texts !

If nobody objects I will solve this bug, alongside with the oracle
 changes.

Hi, Kiran,

We're sorry that you're having a problem. A wiki account is necessary to

I will run the script again, but not until the upgrade is done, and if the
students have uploaded images they will not be deleted, my script searches
for users with no contributions of any kind, however I can modify it (if
the community agrees) to search for users with my PAGE contributions.

I have installed checkUser. In order to activate it for you, you need to go

HOWEVER, it reports 127.0.0.2 for all users, because of ATS.

Please have a look at it, and if I am right and it is not efficient I would

  Hi, Jan,

Cleaning out some files, I found a lot of students doing their homework on
the wiki :/ so I hope you will run your "delete stale unused accounts"
script again, and with the date updated to the next month. We should get
rid of a lot of stale accounts.

Thanks for helping, the list seems endless :-(

I will run the script again, but not until the upgrade is done, and if the
students have uploaded images they will not be deleted, my script searches
for users with no contributions of any kind, however I can modify it (if
the community agrees) to search for users with my PAGE contributions.

The users in question no longer have files uploaded; they've been
deleted. If your script counts deleted contributions as active, then
yes, please change it. Otherwise, the accounts will disappear properly.

BTW, I am adding a request to the Wiki Maintenance page, to install the
"CheckUser" extension. I want to use that to fight the spammers.

I looked at the extension, I can load that, no problem...but if I
understand it correctly it does not help identifying already created users.

The extension is no help in identifying new spammers, but it's a great
help in chasing them, by complaining to the ISP. I have all the
bookmarks for that, from my time as a ML moderator.

It's also helpful in identifying multiple accounts for the same user
(which is okay, unless they're all spammers!).

Did you have a look at the new create account page, on wikitest, that is
not easy for the average spammer to bypass.

It certainly looks ferocious! I hope it works.

My script uses the log table, so if they hade made a contribution they are
not deleted, but I will change it, to check if they have an active
contribution.

the "create account" is active, so feel free to test it (the database will

Hi Jan,

I have done some more basic testing and found no more errors. I have:
* Insert a link.
* Make a page.
* Write with headings, numbered lists, character formatting.
* Upload a picture and link to it.

I'm very glad, that you are making our Wiki work again, and I'm locking
forward, when it becomes active.

Kind regards
Regina

Finally I got mwiki upgraded and ready for test.

version 1.20.2 of mediawiki, with AOO skin and a copy of the database is
available for testing:

wikitest.openoffice.org

It will prompt for a user/password (htaccess), which is: wikitest/wikitest
(just used so nobody thinks it is a production wiki).

There are several changes against to current wiki, here are some of the
important ones:
- New editor (I ended up using the standard editor)
- many extensions are now part of the core (it requires that especially
creative user pages needs testing)
- special gatcha for "create account", actually it is just a reuse of an
extension that was already loaded

I have done a "run and go" test, but we need it tested a lot more before it
goes into production.

My proposal is to leave wikitest running until 31/12/2012, and anybody who
finds a problem (or a feature request) please make a bugzilla report, that
makes it easier to control.

Beginning january and once all severe bugzilla bugs for wikitest has been
solved, I will ask for a vote on replacing the current wiki.

have a nice time testing.

I have installed checkUser. In order to activate it for you, you need to go

can see it in the normal specialPages.

HOWEVER, it reports 127.0.0.2 for all users, because of ATS.

Please have a look at it, and if I am right and it is not efficient I would
like to deinstall it.

have a nice day.

Yes, you are right; the IP address of 127:0:0:2 is not helpful; you can
deinstall CheckUser. I checked my own user name, and got an earlier
(from 12-01), real IP address. I assume that you hadn't installed ATS yet.

What I really want is email addresses. I was sure there was supposed to
be a new way to retrieve those, but maybe I was wrong. I'll do some more
searching on WikiMedia.

@TJ: It is easy for me to provide you on a regular basis with a list of

[DISCUSS] Recourse for Sites Which Do Not Acknowledge Trademarks

2012-12-22 Thread Dave Fisher
One of the ways that sites that offer downloads of Apache OpenOffice (or
OpenOffice.org) often do is:

(1) Don't acknowledge that the trademarks are the Apache Software Foundation's.

(2) Make use of the project's and ASF's resources to offer free support and
other downloads.

They simply hide as legitimate sites. One example is openoffice.us.com.

One thing that we can do to get in the way of this is keep a list of these
domains and when web requests are referred from them we can take users to a
warning page where we can explain the situation, help users get to legitimate
resources and let these providers know how to properly reference trademarks and
make their offering distinct from Apache OpenOffice.

Perhaps there is something that can be done with Google to have them downgrade
search terms for OpenOffice for specific URLs.

Regards,
Dave

I like this idea of a warning page it is simple and (I think) effective.
However they can always take the files and host them on their own server.

That seems more complex to me, they have the right to the domainname and as
long as ASF does not take them to court, it is hard to proof that they do
something really wrong.

Re: [PROPOSAL] New Apache OpenOffice 4 logo proposals...

2012-12-22 Thread Kevin Grignon
Michael,

Great work. Design is very iterative. Keep pushing!

Using the design explorations is a great way to stimulate a conversation which
can help us better understand the requirements. Perhaps we could harvest the
criteria for success in the thread and capture in the wiki

Then we can make the design review process less subjective by having people
review design explorations relative to stated goals.

Also, the mailing list is tough place to review designs, can you post the
design explorations to the AOO UX wiki?

Regards,
Kevin

The current proposals all have squares / circles etc. and apart from the
original similarity with windows8 that has a special signal value.

A surface (square/circle etc) especially with a border, signal:
  - limitation or positive a product that fullfills a single purpose
  - closeness or positive a product the specialize in one function

AOO is in my mind much more, we are open at levels where normal products
 can only dream to go:
 - AOO is used in nearly every corner of the earth.
 - AOO is open for translation to no matter how small a language group
 - AOO is open for developers who want to hack their own specialized
 versions
 - AOO is open for repackaging supplying the core of a wider extented
 product.
 I could go on.

I think it is important that our logo signals this freedom and openess
after all we are OPEN office.

2012-12-22 Thread Michael Acevedo
Greetings Kevin, I would not mind posting the logos to that AOO UX wiki.
Thing is I don't know where it is or whether it is on the cwiki or mwiki
(if it is on the latter, I need to request an account).

Let me know.

Fw: [DISCUSS] Recourse for Sites Which Do Not Acknowledge Trademarks

2012-12-22 Thread kedarnath
Hi,

I think kids need to be educated and re educated and educated ... on what is
trademark and what they can use and develop and make it a part of  their
livelihood honestly. And the bottom lines are - do they have to pay somebody -
If they do I think they can understand a straightforward yes or no. And maybe's
too. This unfortunately has not been so transparent. I see that the link at us
site leads to a common site for genuine downloads. After reading  this post by
dave do I have to inform my contacts to be waey of the US site. Sorry I cannot
- The forum and the community there has been immensely useful building up on
the concepts of using our machines. And has there been brilliant solutions
contributed by users! With the advent of powerful mobile computing - I would
not be surprised and even expect independentt stand alone - yet modules such as
a spreadsheet, text, pictures processing, sound, and who knows even smell and
chemistry (blood types) and
wind monitoring and computing. Office software has been great that it offered
a one source to be able to do a number of things. But very high efficiency is
achieved if use it along with components that do a better job/or  are more
convenirnt. For example Gimp is sometimes easier for pictures. And if you want
to OCR the text Tesseract is good. And this is "patching" up. I think there is
need to try to  "patch" up . Anyway since the world has not ended and even if
it has Best wishes, Merry Christamas, Happy 2013 Namaste Shalom. ...salam
...keep frowning - (that brings out smiles)

Subject: [DISCUSS] Recourse for Sites Which Do Not Acknowledge Trademarks
One of the ways that sites that offer downloads of Apache OpenOffice (or
OpenOffice.org) often do is:(1) Don't acknowledge that the trademarks are the
Apache Software Foundation's.(2) Make use of the project's and ASF's resources
to offer free support and other downloads. They simply hide as legitimate sites.
One example is openoffice.us.com.One thing that we can do to get in the way of
this is keep a list of these domains and when web requests are referred from
them we can take users to a warning page where we can explain the situation,
help users get to legitimate resources and let these providers know how to
properly reference trademarks and make their offering distinct from Apache
OpenOffice.Perhaps there is something that can be done with Google to have them
downgrade search terms for OpenOffice for specific URLs.Regards,Dave
