The Project Management Committee (PMC) for Apache CloudStack has asked
Harikrishna Patnala to become a committer and we are pleased to announce that
he has accepted.

Being a committer allows many contributors to contribute more autonomously. For
developers, it makes it easier to submit changes and eliminates the need to
have contributions reviewed via the patch submission process. Whether
contributions are development-related or otherwise, it is a recognition of a
contributor's participation in the project and commitment to the project and
the Apache Way.

Please join me in congratulating Hari.

Keep them coming. :)

Re: Disk throtling on KVM - shared storage - works ot not ?

2015-03-10 Thread Nux!
Andrei,

A reboot of the guest OS is just yet another activity of the VM, from the
hypervisor pov the machine is on and running.
That's why you need stop/start (which I imagine is what ACS does).

@karuturi we use [Ansible](http://docs.ansible.com/) to manage the routers
ad-hoc (config fixes, package updates, security fixes, etc). Ansible uses SFTP
for file transfer per default (but it can be configured to use SCP as
fallback). So we discovered this issue while debugging.

I can not confirm SFTP works without this patch. This patch fixed the SFTP
functionality for us. I see no reason why the SFTP subsystem should be removed.

On the other hand, SFTP has less overhead then SCP (aka faster) and in a
big environment of hundreds of routers, this is performance gain.

So voting against removing the subsystem.

@karuturi So the problem that it adresses is this: We have SNAPSHOT
dependencies, since snapshots are not disabled on those repositories, they will
be checked. Now the problem is that if one of those servers is not available,
that is breaking the build.

CLOUDSTACK-8272: Python based file-lock free password server implementat...

Major changes:

- VRs are single CPU, so Threading based implementation favoured than
Forking based
- Implements a Python based password server that does not use file based
locks
- Saving password mechanism is provided by using secure token only to VR
(localhost)
- Old serve_password implementation is removed
- Runs with Python 2.6+ with no external dependencies
- Locks used within threads for extra safety

The aim for this is to improve password server by relying on a threading
based approach to minimize RAM usage and at the same time avoid using file
based lock. For 4.5.1 and 4.6.0

You can merge this pull request into a Git repository by running:

$ git pull https://github.com/apache/cloudstack concurrent-password-server

ACS 4.5 Release [URGENT]

2015-03-10 Thread Paul Angus
Hi All,

Given that the release 4.5 vote passed, with the blocker
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-8248 which had the knock on
effect of
CLOUDSTACK-8305

VPC ACL Rules are not applied to Virtual

Do we have a mechanism to recall/annul that RC vote and use a build with the
fixes in? I have a horrible feeling that it would require another round of
voting, but that has to be better than shipping a broken product.

Re: ACS 4.5 Release [URGENT]

2015-03-10 Thread Rohit Yadav

I think let's either slip in the patches and publish new 4.5.0 source
tarballs or start a new candidate for voting? Shout out to David and PMC
to help resolve this?

((If you need resource to pull weights (create source tarballs, commit
on svn) let me know.))

Do we have a mechanism to recall/annul that RC vote and use a build with
the fixes in? I have a horrible feeling that it would require another
round of voting, but that has to be better than shipping a broken product.

This seems like a serious issue to me. Rules not applying on a VR is a
big problem.

We should release good software instead of broken versions, since that
will damage the reputation of CloudStack.

Github user vincentbernat commented on the pull request:

Some remarks:

 - Use `with lock:` instead of `lock.acquire()` then `try/finally`
(compatible with Python 2.6)
 - Use `with file(...) as f:` (idem)
 - `global passMap` and `global lock` are useless since you don't do direct
assignments
 - `getPassword()` could be `passMap.get(..., None)`

i.e. after a certain interval if the passwords are not served they expire, or
if within certain interval (say half an hour) if any password is served should
be expired?

understood. This will definitely save build time. (will do the merge in
sometime)
But, the build will fail irrespective of whether snapshot is enabled right?
if the server goes offline, we will not get the dependency jar as well(in this
case libvirt).

@karuturi Correct, if you do not have the libvirt jar and libvirt.org goes
down, the build will still fail. It would be nice if we could use only the
central repository, but that will need some work with the ceph and libvirt team.

[Redundant VPC] Testing the latest code

2015-03-10 Thread Wilder Rodrigues
Hi guys,

About 2 weeks ago Geoff and Lucian tested the branch under our public
repository and reported 2 bugs - thanks a lot for that. The bugs found, related
to the password server and SNAT, have been fixed, tested and have already been
pushed.

If it’s not asking too much, would be nice if you could do some more tests
before we can merge the code ponto current master. Would that be okay with you?

The branch is:
https://github.com/schubergphilis/cloudstack/tree/feature/systemvm-persistent-config-4
The System VMs can be found here: http://178.237.34.95:8000/

Errors reported by Lucian and Geoff:

I have also encountered problems with SNAT not working in the VPC and the
password server also not functioning.
SNAT works in an isolated network from what I could see, but the passowrd
server is broken there as well.

Next steps I will make:

* Rebase our branch from current Master
* Run the tests agains the following branches:
  - 4.4
  - 4.5
  - rVPC branch (rebased from Master)

Environment:

* XenServer 6.2 hosted by the VMWare Zone on our BetaCloud (CloudStack 4.4.2)
environment
* MySQL running on MacBook Pro
* Management Server running on MacBook Pro

Tests to be executed:

Repo: https://github.com/wilderrodrigues/cloudstack_integration_tests
Remark: the code is the same as the tests on ACS repo, except for the Local
Storage and IP configuration

* test_vpc_vpn.py
* test_service_offerings.py
* test_routers.py
* test_reset_vm_on_reboot.py
* test_privategw_acl.py
* test_accounts.py
* test_vm_life_cycle.py
* test_vpc_offerings.py
* test_vpc_routers.py
* test_redundant_vpc.py

Test execution: nosetests --with-marvin
--marvin-config=/Users/wrodrigues/sbp_dev/cloudstack_integration_tests/cit/integration/acs/config/devcloud-advanced.cfg
 -s -a tags=advanced test_redundant_vpc.py

Please, let us know if you could make some time to help us testing. :)

Cheers,
Wilder

@bhaisaab, can you confirm that if the password is not grap after a certain
period it expired (ex: 15mins), and also if the password is grap once, it is
not available anymore and have to be reset again. Looks like it is the current
approach. Does the current script use inside VMs will remain functional?

Thanks

RE: Jira Housekeeping - 'Old Blockers'

2015-03-10 Thread Paul Angus
Thanks Rajani,

It's an interesting read. I'm hoping to rope a load of people into the overall
effort. There are 1468 open issues in Jira, we really need to start by cleaning
up duplicates, obsolete issues, and 'non-issues'.

Overprovisioning of local storage

2015-03-10 Thread Wido den Hollander
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I've ran into the issue where it seems that local storage can't be
overprovisioned.

storage.overprovisioning.factor is set to 1.5 in both the global and
zone settings, but this is ignored.

In this case it's a 1TB SSD which currently has 68GB allocated on
disk, but 750GB of disk space has been allocated according to CloudStack.

Looking StorageManagerImpl there is this if-statement:

if (storagePool.getPoolType() == StoragePoolType.NetworkFilesystem ||
storagePool.getPoolType() == StoragePoolType.VMFS) {
  DO OVERPROVISION
} else {
  DO NOT OVERPROVISION
}

So why is local storage excluded here? Since QCOW2 is sparsely
allocated and templates deployments are just clones of a parent QCOW2
it's fair to say that with local storage you can also overprovision?

Any objections to adding this?

Wido

Updating VR template, without ACS update

2015-03-10 Thread Andrija Panic
Hi,

I was wondering is it possibe to update/replace the VR template somehow
without actually updating the ACS.

I'm running ACS 4.3.0, and having some issues with remote IP not being
really shown during Port Forwarding and Static NAT (VR also does SNAT
beside the DNAT)

I know question is a little bit weird - but...

Another Q: I can see that after ACS is upgraded, there is restart of each
System VM needed - we have over 50-60 VPCs - this also means that I need to
wait for 60 VRs to reboot.
Is there any drawnback of runnng existing VRs after ACS 4.3.0 is updated to
4.3.2 and then later manually reboot each VR from Infrastructure/Virtual
Routers ?

Re: Overprovisioning of local storage

2015-03-10 Thread Marcus
It's been brought up quite a few times, actually. I think the reason
it hasn't been fixed yet is that the "right" fix is to make the
storage driver decide if it can do overprovision in a given situation,
which is a bit more work than just slapping together a long 'if'
statement.

[HELP] VR sometimes fail to start

2015-03-10 Thread Andrija Panic
Hi,

we are having issues from time to time with starting VR - while creating
VPC.

Here is the few lines from MGMT log:

2015-03-10 16:11:50,018 WARN  [c.c.n.v.VpcManagerImpl]
(Job-Executor-27:ctx-84f4fba4 ctx-970acb35) Failed to start vpc [VPC

VM[DomainRouter|r-2189-VM] due to error in finalizeStart, not retrying
at
com.cloud.vm.VirtualMachineManagerImpl.orchestrateStart(VirtualMachineManagerImpl.java:1072)

The interesting part is on the Agent itself:

.  Output is:

Interesting stuff is - it's seems somewhat random, 3-4 out of 5 works.

Any suggestion are really appreciated, since this is live system :(

Hi,

I think more logs are needed, in DEBUG mode if you can.
Also agent logs and perhaps libvirt logs, just in case.

Re: ACS 4.5 Release [URGENT]

2015-03-10 Thread David Nalley
So 4.5.0 has shipped - it's been propogated to hundreds of mirrors,
and undoing that is not trivial.
IMO, we should patch, and kick out another RC for 4.5.1 (or 4.5.0.1 I suppose)

Version numbers are cheap to increment.

 Hi All,

 Given that the release 4.5 vote passed, with the blocker
 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-8248 which had the
 knock on effect of
 CLOUDSTACK-8305

 VPC ACL Rules are not applied to Virtual
 Router

 Do we have a mechanism to recall/annul that RC vote and use a build
 with the fixes in? I have a horrible feeling that it would require
 another round of voting, but that has to be better than shipping a
 broken product.

RE: ACS 4.5 Release [URGENT]

2015-03-10 Thread Giles Sirett
All
I've just pinged private@ for view from other members of PMC on this, but
personally I do agree with people here that we should not ship something with
such a glaring known defect (especially seeing its able to be fixed quickly)

From a "constitutional perspective" I think this is a unprecedented situation
,and I'm not sure how it can be handled (i.e. we need to effectively cancel the
results of a vote)

I'm also not sure what wheels have been set in motion in terms of
announcements, etc but IMO those wheels should be paused

If people are generally in agreement, I suggest that somebody calls an
unorthodox [cancel release] vote ASAP (I'll leave it to somebody more active
on dev). I know that’s unprecendented and not sure how it fits the bylaws, but
at least we have an audit trail of the desire to do this

We can then spin RC5 with this patch and then vote on that afresh

Thoughts?

Kind Regards
Giles

2015-03-10 Thread Rohit Yadav
Hi David,

Good idea, instead of doing a 4.5.1 release (that would require DB version
changes), let’s do a 4.5.0.1 source release.

Let's not add a fourth digit, as it will break maven's ability to
determine major/minor/incremental and treat the whole thing as a
string.

Re: ACS 4.5 Release [URGENT]

2015-03-10 Thread Marcus
I'm looking for a reference as to why we wouldn't want to use that
scheme (aside from just the fact that it changes our previous
practice), and have so far only come up with this. Admittedly, we're
not likely to hit 4.5.10, but I imagine that it would impact all
versioning for the project, past and future:

http://docs.oracle.com/middleware/1212/core/MAVEN/maven_version.htm#MAVEN401

"If you use a nonstandard versioning scheme, Maven release and version
plug-in goals might not yield the expected results. Because basic
string comparison is performed on nonstandard versions, version
comparison calculates the order of versions incorrectly in some cases.

For example, Maven arranges the version list in the following manner:

1.0.1.0
1.0.10.1
1.0.10.2
1.0.9.3

Version 1.0.9.3 should come before 1.0.10.1 and 1.0.10.2, but the
unexpected fourth field (.3) forced Maven to evaluate the version as a
string.
"

But shall we stay away from building packages then? 4.5.0 will simply
not be released in DEB or RPM format.

I'm aware that a Apache project only releases source, but our end
users use packages.

I can’t think of a reason to provide packages? People will go looking for them,
so maybe document somewhere the reason for skipping…

Version numbers are cheap to increment.

But shall we stay away from building packages then? 4.5.0 will simply
not be released in DEB or RPM format.

I'm aware that a Apache project only releases source, but our end
users use packages.

Hi All,

Given that the release 4.5 vote passed, with the blocker
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-8248 which
had the knock on effect of
CLOUDSTACK-8305

VPC ACL Rules are not applied to Virtual

Do we have a mechanism to recall/annul that RC vote and use a build
with the fixes in? I have a horrible feeling that it would
require another round of voting, but that has to be better
than shipping a broken product.

Being a committer allows many contributors to contribute more

eliminates the need to have contributions reviewed via the patch

Hi guys,

Kernel is Elrepo 3.10.67 (CentOS 6.6)
Libvirt manually compiled 1.2.3 with RBD support.
Qemu 0.12.1.2 - Inktank patched original RHEL 6.4 rpms with RBD support.

And here is the output, with debug mode, from Agent.

At the begining I see agent deleting routes for 169.254.x.x network...:

Basically, It seems like the
/usr/share/cloudstack-common/scripts/vm/hypervisor/kvm/patchviasocket.pl is
failing, not being able to connect to socket...
And I could not ping VR (169.254.2.99)...

Re: Updating VR template, without ACS update

2015-03-10 Thread Marcus
Hi,
  It's impossible to know without looking at the changes in 4.3.1,
4.3.2. Your routers will be running old code, and will probably work,
but might not, e.g. if a router script is called with parameters that
don't exist in the version of the script that the router runs. If you
don't plan on making any changes (add ACLs, spin up new VMs, etc) to
these VPCs they'll most likely run just fine as-is, but any changes
are a big ?

 As far as your question about replacing the template, I believe
CloudStack looks for the latest of a specific version, so if you
retire your existing template and install a new one per the 4.3
upgrade instructions it should choose that. Note that for routers
specifically there s a global option 'router.template.kvm' that can be
pointed to a specific template name to use for routers.

Re: [HELP] VR sometimes fail to start

2015-03-10 Thread Loic Lambiel

Hi,

Maybe the same issue we faced here:
https://github.com/exoscale/cloudstack/commit/df3e7533a78c3594cdd39b8b18e6f4a3abcb8cfd

The patch has not been yet submitted upstream. I'll do it once it is
running on our production.

Anyway, you may easily test it by performing the small change directly
into the script.

Hope that helps.

[GitHub] cloudstack pull request: Add Apache Kafka event-bus support - prod...

2015-03-10 Thread pyr
GitHub user pyr opened a pull request:

https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/pull/109

Add Apache Kafka event-bus support - producing only.

This commit produces event bus messages to a "cloudstack" topic
in Apache Kafka. Configuration is expected to be found in
/etc/cloudstack/management/kafka.producer.properties and will
generally be of the form:

bootstrap.servers=kafka-host1:9092,kafka-host2:9092
key.serializer=org.apache.kafka.common.serialization.StringSerializer
value.serializer=org.apache.kafka.common.serialization.StringSerializer

There is no way to parameterize the topic yet, and the consuming
code is just place-holder. I think adding a consumer within cloudstack
is very debatable and likely not needed.

You can merge this pull request into a Git repository by running:

$ git pull https://github.com/exoscale/cloudstack feature/event-bus-kafka

Alternatively you can review and apply these changes as the patch at:

https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/pull/109.patch

To close this pull request, make a commit to your master/trunk branch
with (at least) the following in the commit message:

This closes #109

Add virtual disk to kvm guest vm but the console fail

Hi,

I hope to get some advise to debug this issus. Thanks :) .

Hi, Dev Team

I play with cloudstack 4.4.2 + centos 7 kvm. It is ok that I deploy an
instance to kvm host, and the console is ok too.
When I directly add a vdisk via virsh command to this instance, it is ok and
the disk is recongnised but the console in CS UI is fail.
After I remove the vdisk via virsh command from this instance, the console
in CS UI is ok.
How to debug this issue ? Thanks.

My Env:

virsh # vol-list lvm-pool-sdb

I attache disk to i-3-132-VM:
"virsh attach-disk --domain i-3-132-VM --source /dev/lvm-pool-sdb/vol1
--target vdb --targetbus virtio"

And then I open the console of this instance but fail with notice: "Server

Re: Add virtual disk to kvm guest vm but the console fail

2015-03-10 Thread Marcus
It is kind of bad to attach disks that cloudstack doesn't know about.
Cloudstack can hot attach disks for you, but I assume you have a specific,
temporary reason to do this (perhaps there is existing data on the disk and
you don't want to import the volume through supported 'volume upload'?).

I can't immediately think of a reason as to why it would make the console
fail, but you might want to start by looking at how the XML for the VM
changes, and perhaps turn on debug in the agent logs and watch for what
happens when it looks for the VNC port during console open.

Also, CentOS 7 is the guest, right? As hypervisor CentOS 7 barely works in
4.5.0 with a bunch of tweaking, but should be just fine as a guest in any
recent cloudstack release.
