Title:
Misapplied patches in 4.0.6-2ubuntu01 break reading and writing JPEG
  compressed files

Status in LibTIFF:
  New
Status in tiff package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The patches applied to libtiff 4.0.6 in 4.0.6-2ubuntu01 seem to break
  JPEG tiff read and write.

  To reproduce:

  $ tiffcp -c jpeg k2a.tif x.tif

(where k2a.tif is a simple uncompressed RGB strip tiff) appears to
work. However, x.tif, the output, will now not read without warnings:

  $ tiffcp x.tif y.tif
TIFFFetchNormalTag: Warning, ASCII value for tag "JPEGTables" does not end in
null byte. Forcing it to be null.
JPEGLib: Warning, Premature end of JPEG file.

This was working fine until a couple of days ago, so I guess it's one
  of the most recent patches.

Some packages using libtiff seem to be broken too. For example,
openslide, which uses libtiff to load jp2k-compressed slide images, is
  no longer working:

  $ openslide-write-png CMU-1-Small-Region.svs 0 0 0 100 100 x.png
TIFFFetchNormalTag: Warning, ASCII value for tag "JPEGTables" does not end in
null byte. Forcing it to be null.
TIFFFetchNormalTag: Warning, ASCII value for tag "JPEGTables" does not end in
null byte. Forcing it ... repeats 8 more times
openslide-write-png: Premature end of JPEG file

and x.png is not a valid PNG image. The test .svs image may be
  downloaded here:

  http://openslide.cs.cmu.edu/download/openslide-testdata/Aperio/

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1439007] Re: Cannot open settings

2017-05-28 Thread Xwarman
I just installed pantheon and elementary from Ubuntu 16.04, then tried kde a
while and now turn to gnome 3. (Everything because Canonical lets Unity die)
As I went these way I got that bug. Its the same. When I try to open
gnome-control-center nothing happens. When I open from terminal it says:

gnome-control-center
[INFO 11:37:57.623375] Application.vala:153: Systemeinstellungen version: 2.0
[INFO 11:37:57.623413] Application.vala:155: Kernel version: 4.4.0-78-generic

/usr/bin/gnome-control-center: Zeile 20: 28797 Trace/Breakpoint ausgelöst

So I think that bug is still present.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1694109] [NEW] X server freezes with all NVIDIA open source driver releases (340.102, 375.66, 381.22)

2017-05-28 Thread A K Singh
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I have Dell XPX L502X with Nvidia GT 540M card i.e. 6 years old hardware
whose driver is still not working, this is amazing :(

The X server freezes with all NVIDIA open source driver releases
(340.102, 375.66, 381.22). This report is for NVIDIA driver version
340.102.

X Server freezes at any time keyboard and mouse hangs and last resort
used to be to power down with power key forcefully which may destroy HDD
also :(

I even tried proprietary NVIDIA drivers also but they had shown the same
behaviour.

Without the NVIDIA drivers in place I can't use CUDA toolkit.

Please let me know if someone need any further info apart from attached file.
Thanks

  3) Login. gnome-keyring unlocks "login" features including for google chrome
  4) gnome-keyring is not unlocked, chrome takes 2 minutes to open and with no
secure password features(sync) functioning.

For the past couple days, chrome on Ubuntu 16.04 takes a REALLY long
time (maybe 2 minutes) to start. Once chrome is started, I am not able
to sync and any secure password features are broken. I found out this
is due to gnome-keyring not being unlocked at login. There's also no
way to unlock the "login" portion of the keyring from the running
daemon by default. I have to kill the gnome-keyring process and start
without "--login" as a parameter. Then the "login" section shows up
which I'm able to unlock. From there chrome starts up instantly but
  asks the following:

Enter password to unlock your login keyring
The login keyring did not get unlocked when you logged into your computer

After that, all of it's sync and secure features are functional.

Starting google-chrome-stable from a command line at boot without
running the above workaround shows the following error messages:

Gkr-Message: secret service operation failed: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the

I know this sound confusing, but they work as two under Windows.
  Please help!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1682233] Re: 10de:1c8c [MSI] Module nouveau seems to MISS GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mobile

2017-05-28 Thread madbiologist
Sorry, I forgot that you also need the signed firmware files that were
releases by NVIDIA.

Navigate to /lib/firmware/nvidia and create a directory called gp107

Then go to https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware
/linux-firmware.git/tree/nvidia/gp107 and copy each of those directories
and the files they contain to your new gp107 directory. (See
/lib/firmware/nvidia/gp100 for a partial example).

Reboot.

Title:
10de:1c8c [MSI] Module nouveau seems to MISS GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
  Mobile

Status in xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I have a laptop computer with hybrid graphics : 'Intel Onboard IGD'
and 'Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mobile'.

The 'Intel Onboard IGD' correctly manages the onboard monitor with
  resolution 1920 x 1080.

But I need the Nvidia card to manage an external monitor with
  resolution 4K2K connected to DisplayPort.

At the beginning, the 'nouveau' module of the Linux kernel seems to be
correctly loaded :
  $ lsmod  |  grep  '^nouveau'
  nouveau 1601536 0

But XORG does NOT load its 'nouveau' module. So, I force it with following
file :
  $ cat  /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-module-nouveau.conf
  Section "Module"
  Load "nouveau"
  EndSection

In the attached 'Xorg-with-nouveau.0.log' file, you can see :

  - Lines 58-59 :XORG correctly finds both Intel and Nvidia
  graphics hardware.

  - Lines 61-66 :XORG loads its 'nouveau' module.

  - Lines 94-108 : The list of the Nvidia chipsets known by the
'nouveau' module does NOT contain 'GTX 1050'. Is this meaningful ?

  - Line 123 : Message ending with 'cannot open kernel arbiter, no
multi-card support'.
Is this meaningful ? If yes, is it possible to activate
the 'kernel arbiter' ?

  - Lines 124-226 : The 'modesetting' module of XORG (perhaps with the
help of the 'glamoregl' submodule) correctly reports the 4 available
graphics outputs, in particular 'eDP-1' connected to the onboard
  monitor.

  - Lines 233-234 : XORG unloads its 'nouveau' module, which has NOT
reported any graphics hardware or outputs

If necessary, I am able to test :
  - the latest version of the 'xserver-xorg-video-nouveau' package from a PPA
  - the latest upstream kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline

Finally, I wonder where this issue has to be solved :

  - inside configuration files in '/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d',

  - inside the 'xserver-xorg-video-nouveau' package,

  - inside the 'nouveau' module of the Linux kernel,

  - inside the 'kernel arbiter'.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Title:
Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not
  work well with shortcuts (reopen)

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This is a reopen of bug #36812, which has reappeared in Kubuntu 17.04
  Zesty Zapus.

This is a bug about shortcuts mapped to combinations which include
  each other.

For example, if we have Ctrl+Shift (for keyboard layout) and Ctrl+Shift+N (to
open a new terminal), then we are practically unable to use the second
shortcut; this is what happens:
  Ctrl press (nothing happens)
  Shift press (keyboard layout change)
N (a simple N appears, since a shortcut has already fired)

The expected behavior is to fire shortcuts on the release (not on
press) of the special keys (ctrl, shift, alt, etc) which is also how
Windows behave. This is a serious problem for bilingual layouts,
typically using Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift for keyboard layout change.

Apparently, the bug has reappeared after the patch that used to fix
the problem (208_switch_on_release.diff) has been removed from X.Org
1.19 packages. There is an updated patch in the upstream ticket
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865 (link to the
  attachment: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=129861).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1694129] [NEW] Cannot attach Network Shares in Thunderbird

2017-05-28 Thread Jon
Public bug reported:

Suddenly (and I'm not sure if this was after a recent Ubuntu update or a
Thunderbird one, Thunderbird no longer shows "Network" locations in the
'Attach File(s)' window. Normally below "Bookmarks" is another section
"Network" which shows my network locations, however this entire section
is now missing.

There is now no way of attaching a file existing anywhere on the network
to an outgoing email. Nautilus can see and access all the network
locations 100% fine. Drag/drop into the outgoing email from Nautilus
will attach a network file to the email but Thunderbird refuses to send
it and throws up a "Send Message Error":

Sending of the message failed.
There was an error attaching smb://mypc/my documents/myfolder/file.xls. Please
check that you have access to the file.

Attaching network files in Thunderbird and on Ubuntu 14.04 has worked
fine for two years. I'm a "user" and really not that au-fait with the
inner workings of Linux so I hope this helps.

Thanks

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1124282] Re: screen lock by timeout does not affect vm

2017-05-28 Thread Patrik Nilsson
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 49579 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/49579

Fails with Virtualbox in focus:

user@ubuntu:~$ sleep 20s; gnome-screensaver-command --lock

Works with Virtualbox in focus:

user@ubuntu:~$ sleep 20s; wmctrl -k on; gnome-screensaver-command --lock

Works with Virtualbox in focus:

user@ubuntu:~$ sleep 20s; wmctrl -k on; gnome-screensaver-command
--lock; wmctrl -k off

Works with Virtualbox in focus:

user@ubuntu:~$ sleep 20s; wmctrl -k on; gnome-screensaver-command
--lock; sleep 1s; wmctrl -k off

Works with Virtualbox in focus:

user@ubuntu:~$ sleep 20s; wmctrl -k on; gnome-screensaver-command
--lock; wmctrl -k off

I can't understand why it couldn't be fixed.

screen lock by timeout does not affect vm

Status in gnome-screensaver package in Ubuntu:
  Opinion

Bug description:

  I have a virtualbox running a Windows 7 64 bit on my Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. If
the Windows window is on focus and i am inactive, then my screen is locked
after a certain amount of time and should normally ask for my password. But it
only does so if a change the focus to a window other than my virtual machine.

Worse than that, if I hurry after my screen should be locked, I
perform some actions on my Ubuntu host before the password prompt
locks the screen. So the presence of my virtualbox allows people to
open a terminal on the host and type any command in the worst case.
  This is a security issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1670036] Re: Misapplied patches in 4.0.6-2ubuntu0.1 break reading and writing JPEG compressed files

- Misapplied patches in 4.0.6-2ubuntu01 break reading and writing JPEG

+ Misapplied patches in 4.0.6-2ubuntu0.1 break reading and writing JPEG

Title:
Misapplied patches in 4.0.6-2ubuntu0.1 break reading and writing JPEG
  compressed files

Status in LibTIFF:
  New
Status in tiff package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The patches applied to libtiff 4.0.6 in 4.0.6-2ubuntu01 seem to break
  JPEG tiff read and write.

  To reproduce:

  $ tiffcp -c jpeg k2a.tif x.tif

(where k2a.tif is a simple uncompressed RGB strip tiff) appears to
work. However, x.tif, the output, will now not read without warnings:

  $ tiffcp x.tif y.tif

  $ openslide-write-png CMU-1-Small-Region.svs 0 0 0 100 100 x.png
TIFFFetchNormalTag: Warning, ASCII value for tag "JPEGTables" does not end in
null byte. Forcing it to be null.
TIFFFetchNormalTag: Warning, ASCII value for tag "JPEGTables" does not end in
null byte. Forcing it ... repeats 8 more times
openslide-write-png: Premature end of JPEG file

and x.png is not a valid PNG image. The test .svs image may be
  downloaded here:

  http://openslide.cs.cmu.edu/download/openslide-testdata/Aperio/

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1232873] Re: "could not back up files" dialog never shown; breaks scheduled backups

2017-05-28 Thread Vej
Hello everyone affected. Is this still related to an option called "--
auto" as described by the original author?

I could not find such an option in a recent version of Déjà Dup.

Bug description:
On the conclusion of a backup, if any nonreadable files exist in the
backup source directories, Deja Dup shows a notification at the bottom
of my screen telling me that the backup completed but not all files
were able to be backed up; "see dialog for details". However, this
dialog never appears. As a result, the "deja-dup --backup --auto"
process never terminates, as it's waiting for me to close a dialog
that never appeared in the first place.

This effectively breaks the automatic, "set-and-forget" backup
strategy, as deja-dup-monitor will not launch another scheduled backup
until the deja-dup process exits, which will never happen.

This only happens when deja-dup is launched with "deja-dup --backup
--auto"; launching with "deja-dup --backup" (no auto) does show the
dialog at the end of the process, allowing me to close it and properly
  terminate the backup.

Bug description:
The problem is that I get the message "No space left on me DD" where "me DD"
is the name of my backup folder on my NAS.
There is still 1.9 T free space on that NAS.

  I can see it when running: gvfs-info -f smb://user@diskstation/backup-profil/
  attributes:
filesystem::size: 2948732551168
filesystem::free: 1929174245376
filesystem::type: cifs
filesystem::readonly: FALSE
gvfs::backend: smb-share

When I checked the problem was that there was no space left on my home
folder and after I did a little bit of cleaning it looks like the
  backup process could go on.

The message here is wrong and there is no easy way to know if we have enough
space in our /home, /tmp or backup destination.
Isn't it possible to give some kind of rough estimation to the user.

  Thanks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1694174] [NEW] Audio stops when screen is locked

2017-05-28 Thread Jonas Thiem
Public bug reported:

When playing music with totem, the audio instantly stops when screen is
locked (without the user actually logging out, just a regular lock
screen). mplayer on the other hand doesn't suffer from this problem
ontinues playing just fine.

This is very problematic when running Linux on portable handhelds (do
you ever not lock your phone when listening to music on the run with the

behavior on a regular PC either, so I suggest it is changed/fixed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1685748] Re: "Dim screen when inactive" doesn't work in Gnome X session, screen dims even when option is set to "OFF"

2017-05-28 Thread Jonas Thiem
Did I file this bug in the correct component/project?

This is more than a cosmetic issue because when reading documents in the
train or in other places where no AC power is available, it requires me
to move the mouse all the time or read with reduced screen brightness..
(which again on the train might be problematic because of sunlight)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1654448] Re: XPS 13 9360 and 9350, Realtek ALC3246, Headphone audio hiss

2017-05-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
@kaihengfeng: I found the problem was only really noticeable with
earbuds. Headphones tended to hide the problem.

Although it's also worth noting the workaround 'amixer -c 0 set
'Headphone Mic Boost',0 1' sounds like it's working because it actually
reduces the audio output volume/gain. With the workaround enabled, ALL
audio is quieter so (like using big headphones) the problem could become
unnoticeable just because of that. So saying the problem and the
solution are directly related to 'Headphone Mic Boost' might be a red
herring.

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version k4.4.0-57-generic.

When headphones are plugged in, there is a clearly audible hiss (white
noise). This is present as soon as the headphones are plugged in, whether
'headphones' or 'headset' are selected from the pop-up box.

Using alsamixer to debug the issue reveals that it is related to
"Headphone Mic Boost" - the default setting is: dB gain 0.00, 0.00. If
  this is changed to:

10.00, 10.00 (one notch up) the hiss disappears.
  20.00, 20.00 cause a louder hiss and
30.00, 30.00 causes an even louder hiss with high frequency audio artifacts.

When the headphones are removed and plugged back in the Headphone Mic
Boost setting returns to dB gain 0 and the problem also returns.

This (problem and workaround) has been reported in the wild:
  https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13050843 and

Backport git patch that fixes memory corruption in libgweather that is
causing gnome-shell to crash. This is particularly bad on wayland as it causes
the user to lose their sessions

I believe this should also fix bug 1688208 and potentially a couple of
other high ranking crashes on errors.ubuntu.com. I have not however
found reliable reproducers for those other bugs.

  [Test Case]
  After update of libgweather
  1. Ensure org.gnome.Weather.Application locations is not set (as per default
setting)
  2. Disable Location Services
  3. gnome-shell should not crash

  [Regression Potential]
Low, the patch merely fixes a refcounting bug. Given the high impact of this
bug, this is an important fix.

Bug description:
I have found that annoyingly programs create icons on the desktop, but
because the setting "Icons on Desktop" is off, I have to then turn it
on so that I am able to view the desktop icons and remove it, and the
only reason I know that anything is there is because of the fact that
when I upload a file somewhere, the default location to look in is the
Desktop so I see what is there. But otherwise in Nautilus I don't
even get a link to the Desktop.

So I think that it would be good if programs weren't allowed to create
files on the desktop if you have the option "Icons on Desktop"
enabled, or at least for the user to be prompted if they want the icon
to be created there and for the option to be disabled. As the way it
currently works could be exploited by attackers, because they can
store files there, and it is unlikely that anyone will ever realise
that they are there because it is very hard to view the desktop.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Bluetooth audio seemingly refuses to support A2DP (stuck in HSP/HFP mode).
A2DP is the high quality profile used for Bluetooth speakers and music in
general.

  [Test Case]
  1. Pair a Bluetooth audio device with Ubuntu.
  2. Go to Sound settings and check the device's current "Mode".
  3. If the current Mode is not yet A2DP then try to set it to A2DP
Expected: The mode is either A2DP by default or can be set to it.

  [Regression Potential]
Low. The SRU focuses on Bluetooth logic in pulseaudio, so that is the main
area affected. A combination of related A2DP bugs in pulseaudio in xenial means
it is difficult to get working at all without this patch. So highly unlikely
Bluetooth audio support could get worse. Since pulseaudio itself is being
modified there is always a regression potential in support for other audio
devices, but several audio devices have been tested and all continue to work
well with the patch.

  [Other notes]
Related to bug 1283003 and bug 1582213. Possibly others too. The debdiff
which fixes this is attached to bug 1582213.

Please note that Bluetooth and Bluetooth audio support in xenial is
still not perfect. This SRU only aims to address a few of the most
troublesome issues. Please consider the fact that this is an
incremental improvement and some people are still likely to experience
some bugs related to pulseaudio and Bluetooth, even after this SRU.

The patch was authored by Luke Yelavich with help from Konrad
Zapałowicz. And it has received further testing over the past two
months by Konrad, Jim Hodapp and Daniel van Vugt. The debdiff proposed
here only changes the changelog wording from Luke's original PPA.

  [Original Description]
Just installed 15.04 fresh from the latest ISO (beta2).

I'm bummed to see my bluetooth headset (Bose Soundlink overear) seems
  to have regressed in functionality.

In 14.10, I was able to set the output profile either to a2dp or
  hsp/hfp (telephony duplex).

In 15.04, it only works in telephony duplex mode. I can't get high
fidelity sound playback to work at all.

This thread seems to be related, though the workaround within did not solve
the problem for me:
  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=194006

The bug is still present in 16.04 LTS and 16.10.

Bluetooth device doesn't play any sound in A2DP mode unless set to HSP/HFP
first. A2DP is the high quality profile used for Bluetooth speakers and music

  [Test Case]
  1. Pair a Bluetooth audio device with Ubuntu.
  2. Verify in Sound settings you have it set to A2DP mode.
  3. Turn off and then on the Bluetooth device.
  4. Verify the device has reconnected and if not, force it to in the Bluetooth
indicator menu.
  5. Open Sound settings again, select the device and verify it's reappeared in
A2DP mode.
  6. Click 'Test Sound'.
Expected: Sound can be heard from the Bluetooth device.

  [Original Description]
  I have a Sennheiser MM 450-X headset.

In 15.10, connection & playback was straightforward.

In 16.04, the headset connects, and shows up as default playback
device on `pavucontrol`, but there is no sound.

A functional workaround is to, after having connected it, to go the
`Configuration` tab, and in the `Profile` dropdown, to choose `...
HSP/HFP`, which will make them play as expected (but in low quality),
then switch to `... A2DP Sink` (they will play in high quality).

  [Original Description]
  Hi,

  I found a bug in Ubuntu 14.04 !

I tried to pair a bluetooth stereo headset (A2DP compatible). The
pairing process goes well, but after that I can't select it on the audio
  preferences.

When I select it, it only shows the last selected item options and don't do
anything. (he should switch to the headset output).
I must mention that it worked very well on Ubuntu 12.04.

This bug can be in the bluetooth stack or in unity-control-center or
maybe pulseaudio. I actually have no idea.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1693693] Re: Stuck on a black screen after logging out of Gnome Shell

2017-05-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Curious. I can't reproduce this problem with artful today. Everything
works better and I can't see what if any relevant packages changed.

Bug description:
In the software store on Ubuntu Gnome 17.04, fully updated, some apps show up
as installed twice without be doing anything command line installs, updates,
etc. This currently effects the Software & Updates app and Chromium app
(installed from the most popular software store options, I'm also confused why
3 show there). I installed re-downloaded images on a second computer to verify
this
issue further. Print screen showing the duplicates attached. Several other
apps showed duplicated on installation (including ImageMagick), but went away
after rebooting.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1468027] Re: change default CJK fonts to Noto CJK

2017-05-28 Thread tomoe_musashi
Sorry to bother you again but there is a new update for the Noto CJK fonts.
Google and Adobe released the Serif fonts for CJK about several weeks ago
Noto Serif CJK:
http://www.google.com/get/noto/help/cjk/
It is a better serif font in consistency and glyph standard.
Ubuntu should seed the new Noto Serif CJK over the current

noto-cjk is definitely better what we had before, like fonts- wqy and
fonts-droid.
Android community had received these complains for years, finally they got
them fixed on lollipop.
Fedora also set it as default chinese font start from F21.
and of course, i still hope that ubuntu could drop those 69-language-selector
fontconfig files, just like what F13 did.

Firefox Menu Bar missing when starting up at fvwm login

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I'm using the Fvwm window manager. In the "Session and Startup"
dialog, I've added Firefox as an "Application Autostart", using the
simple command "firefox". This has previously worked fine, but since
upgrading to Ubuntu 17.04, Firefox starts up with the Menu Bar missing
(below the title bar). Non-active window tabs are also greyed out.
It's 100% reproducible. If I shut down Firefox and restart it, it
  works fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1468027] Re: change default CJK fonts to Noto CJK

2017-05-28 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@tomoe_musashi: Can you please file a new bug about Noto Serif CJK
instead of using this one which was closed long ago.

There is some related packaging discussion at Debian:

https://bugs.debian.org/862276

http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-fonts-
devel/2017-May/thread.html#19499

I think it's wise to wait until we see the result of that discussion
before we change anything in Ubuntu.
