[Bug 651102] [NEW] Save message as mbox... no longer works

2010-09-29 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

The option Save message as mbox no longer works. Instead of saving the
message, the file selector dialogue repeatedly returns. We can see the
Save button being activated when pressing Enter or clicking on the
button, but the dialogue keeps on returning.

This is a regression since Lucid and it prevents e.g. saving inline
patches sent by other developers.

It seems that it works again, but only if the message title doesn't
include special characters. If there are special characters, it refuses
to save the message, even after retitling the filename to be used before
clicking OK.

[Bug 420573] Re: [karmic] gdm crashes after selecting the user among the list

2009-08-31 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
seb128, thank you for taking the time to answer this bug.

As it so happens, Apport is already enabled on this host.

Unfortunately, your answer point to 1) running Nautilus on a host where
it isn't installed, since I'm running LXDE or 2) towards launching an X
session to run a GTK or QT version of Apport, in a situation where GDM
crashing prevents someone from actually launching an X session.

Fortunately, I happen to know about apport-cli, which is indeed
installed on this host too.

Unfortunately, I cannot send you its output, because Python in Karmic is
currently extremely broken and this makes Apport itself crash.

I thus welcome your pointers as to how an Apport report can be sent in
these circumstances.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 545871] Re: [lucid] downgrade to stable 2.10

2010-03-24 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
1. Destination folder preferences are a real mess. As much as I tried
fiddling with the preferences, I could not reproduce the folder naming
logic of 2.10. Anyhow, preferences should be found under the
Preferences menu, not hidden somewhere else.

2. I've noticed this too.

3. I've noticed this too.

4. Used to work in 2.10 and as it's now broken, it's a regression.

5. "Fixed in GIT" nonetheless means that it won't make it on time for
this LTS; not an acceptable solution.

To the above, I would have to add:

6. Picture editing functions are completely gone.

7. Operation is bloody sluggish and slow, compared to 2.10.

The selection criteria for an LTS (long-term support) distribution
release are maturity and rock-solid operation of a piece of software. As
old and unmaintained as 2.10 might be, it fits those criteria of
predictable, well-established and rock-solid performance that we want.
Right now, 2.11 doesn't, because it reinvents the wheel on too many
aspects of core functionalities and because it's in a constant state of
rework. This doesn't match the criteria of long-term usability we need
for an LTS.

[Bug 545871] Re: [lucid] downgrade to stable 2.10

2010-03-24 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Expecting someone to go back and enable what used to be there by default
is generally not a good strategy, neither is fragmenting existing
functions into plug-ins. By all means, do add the ability to make plug-
ins if you like, but fragmenting features and moving them around just
for the sake of trying new ideas is counter-productive because it
produces unpleasant surprises for the user.

fails. Nautilus just hangs indefinitely with the "busy" mouse pointer
spinning at infinitum. smbclient connects just fine, so I have to
assume that either Nautilus or GVFS is at fault.

I somehow fail to see the logic behind marking a bug as Invalid when the
issue is in fact confirmed. Not only that, but a user can easily
interpret this sort of action as a slap in the face. Wouldn't marking it
as a duplicate be enough of a response?

[Bug 508309] [NEW] closing lid no longer suspends on Dell D430

2010-01-16 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Since upgrading to Lucid, closing the lid blackens the LCD of this Dell
D430 laptop, but doesn't suspend or hibernate as set in g-p-m's menu.
Opening the lid again, one never sees the gnome-screensaver password
input dialog appear. even after furiously hitting any random key or
moving the trackpad. Switching to a vcons doesn't produce visual
content either, so the only "cure" is to hit ctrl-alt-del while in the
vcons to reboot the laptop.

[Bug 510196] [NEW] keymap indicator applet hard-coded to use black fonts

Public bug reported:

The new GNOME keyboard map selector applet in 2.29 (which seems to have

Please sync rhythmbox 0.12.3-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main).

This new upstream fixes chain playing of Ogg files, which has been
a long-standing bug in Rhythmbox. Ubuntu changes might still need
to be applied to the Debian upstream.

Changelog since current karmic version 0.12.2-0ubuntu2:

rhythmbox (0.12.3-1) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Josselin Mouette ]
  * Recommend gvfs-backends. Closes: #529654.

  [ Emilio Pozuelo Monfort ]
  * New upstream release.
- Migrated to playbin2, can now play chained oggs. Closes: #448215.
  * Update build-dependencies.

  [ Josselin Mouette ]
  * Update README.Debian to indicate that devices need to be mounted for
rhythmbox to see them.
  * Only suggest gnome-codec-install, it is way too obnoxious.

  [ Sam Morris ]
  * New upstream release.
- Increased build-depends on gstreamer, libnotify and libsoup.
- Build-depend on libsoup-gnome2.4-dev.
  * Enabled brasero now it's in unstable.

[Bug 280148] Re: g-s-d needs to set mouse properties when a new device appears

2008-11-09 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Martin, it seems that the real fix is what's currently in wgrant6.
Could a package with the equivalent patch be pushed into intrepid-
updates? As far as I can tell, it's one of the only show stoppers
preventing people from safely upgrading to Intrepid. If there's gonna be
a 8.10.1 CD image, it might also be worth including it there. Thanks!

Btw the version numbers used for the wgrant packages will prevent
automatic upgrades to intrepid-proposed:

 *** 2.24.0-0ubuntu4~wgrant6 0
500 http://ppa.launchpad.net intrepid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.24.0-0ubuntu3.1 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com intrepid-proposed/main Packages
100 http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
 2.24.0-0ubuntu3 0

0ubuntu4~wgrant versions will always trump 0ubuntu3, simply because of
the bump from ubuntu3 to ubuntu4, while intrepid-proposed remains at
3.x releases.

This of course won't matter for users who only track intrepid-updates
and never heard of wgrant packages. :)

[Bug 300673] [NEW] Jaunty: closing the lid no longer hibernates

2008-11-21 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Since a few days, closing the lid on this Dell D430 laptop running
Jaunty no longer puts the computer into hibernation.

FWIW, I just installed 2.24.0-0ubuntu4~wgrant1 as a test and found that
it doesn't restore the left-handed setting after resume.

I just did. No improvement. I think that the main difference with the
duplicate bug is that no device has been removed or inserted, in my
case, so there's no new device to match to a driver or preference, since
the exact same device is there after operation is resumed from
sleep/hibernate. Perhaps the real trick would be to make g-s-d aware of
when *it* has been resumed, so that it rescans all hardware upon being
restored? Or have I misunderstood and this is that what this patch is
already supposed to do?

Going back to GNOME's mouse preference, then manually selecting right-
handed, then left-handed again indeed fixes it. Of course, it requires
the mental gymnastic of using the wrong button to get to that
configuration menu. It also does nothing to automatically restore left-
handed after resuming.

The upgrade was performed using 'aptitude'. As to whether maintainer
scripts for xserver-xorg are capable of handling migration from X 1.4
(Hardy) to X 1.5 (Intrepid), I wouldn't know. IF they cannot, they
definitely should. FYI, that xorg.conf is what I got from a clean
install of Hardy, immediately followed by a dist-upgrade.

Not only that, but the splitting of seahorse-agent into seahorse-plugins
results in seahorse's own GPG keyring copy being out of sync with what's

[Bug 966147] Re: no longer displays saved PDF form content

2012-03-28 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
This issue is actually much worse than I expected:

Trying to use the non-free Acrobat Reader to perform the same task, I
was dismayed to notice that it cannot be performed; Adobe expects people
to buy a commercial product to be able to save the form's content back
to the file.

Thus, because of this regression, I am now totally unable to file my
monthly declarations electronically; I am instead stuck with hand-
writing everything onto this multiple-page document's paper version.
This is a serious loss in productivity AND very bad news, considering
how Precise is supposed to be the next LTS release.

Correction. Downgrading as above does restore normal operation. However,

[Bug 966147] Re: no longer displays saved PDF form content

2012-03-31 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
One detail that I just noticed is that while downgrading allows to save
form content again and to display it properly, there remains one
(presumably font-related issue): the checkmarks in checkboxes (e.g.
check all the following cases that apply) appear as boxes indicating a
missing glyph in the font used to display the document. This wasn't an
issue on Oneiric.

[Bug 966147] [NEW] no longer displays saved PDF form content

2012-03-27 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Public bug reported:

Evince no longer displays the content of electronic form fields saved

appears when someone clicks on a field, but otherwise Evince displays

This prevents someone from printing documents with the correct form
content.

[Bug 966147] Re: no longer displays saved PDF form content

2012-03-27 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
It is not a duplicate. This was working fine in Oneiric. The other bug
talks about an issue in Oneiric.

** Description changed:

Evince no longer displays the content of electronic form fields saved
with PDF documents. The updated field content is correctly saved and
appears when someone clicks on a field, but otherwise Evince displays
the default content that was saved in the original document template.
This prevents someone from printing documents with the correct form
  content.

This is a regression from Oneiric.

- ProblemType: Bug
- DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04
+ TEST CASE:
+
+ 1. Open a document named Monthly_VAT_declaration_2012-02-28.pdf as created by
Evince 3.2 in Oneiric.
+ 2. The "Date" field in the "Date and Place" section of the document correctly
displays 28.02.2012, but let's update it to 27.03.2012 for today's monthly
declaration.
+ 3. Select "Save copy" from the File menu. Let's use
Monthly_VAT_declaration_2012-03-27.pdf as the file name.
+ 4. Close all Evince windows.
+ 5. Open Monthly_VAT_declaration_2012-03-27.pdf into Evince.
+ 6. The "Date" field displays 28.02.2012, but clicking on it to edit it shows
that 27.03.2012 was nonetheless correctly saved as data at step 3.
+ 7. Trying to print the content of Monthly_VAT_declaration_2012-03-27.pdf via
the GTK print dialog however produces a file whose content matches the old one
from Monthly_VAT_declaration_2012-02-28.pdf, as displayed.

[Bug 923694] Re: Document Viewer does not show text stored in text input fields in PDF

2012-03-27 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
I was sent here from bug #966147 but it seems that this is a somewhat
different issue, since this was working fine for me in Oneiric. It's
only since Precise that it breaks for me.

As for the fonts used by the PDF, I wouldn't know. However, I can
confirm that the exact same PDF form displayed and printed fine until
Oneiric and has been updated as-is, from one month to the next.

Actually, if this indeed is the same issue as bug #966147 then I'm gonna
have to raise its severity to HIGH, because this regression prevents me

[Bug 886833] [NEW] gdm-greeter unusable because filled with pixel garbage

2011-11-06 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Public bug reported:

on Lucid, since whichever update, GDM no longer displays a usable
greeter content. Instead, the mouse cursor leaves a trail of its pointer
icon in it and the face browser that should appear isn't there. This was
working fine until a few months ago, when I last logged into my LTSP
