Bug#574590: xserver-xorg: Regression: no graceful treatment of broken keyboard config
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.5+5 Severity: normal Until recently, broken keyboard configuration were more-or-less gracefully degraded to some workable state. This is no longer the case (not exactly sure since when). The way I encounter broken configs is by having my own keyboard variant. It is defined in a file under /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols, which gets overwritten on updates; whenever that happens, my keyboard config includes a non-existent variant (I have two layouts, us and il; I use the default varaiant for us, and my variant "katef" for il). Until recently, in this case, X just degraded to the default il variant; it was a little nuisance, but easy to figure out and resolve. But with the current version, the result is that the keyboard on X is completely disabled. I'm just glad the same rules weren't applied to the console (which also uses xkb), so that I could at least use it to fix things (I didn't check the il layout in the console when it was broken, but us worked). This is also the story of bug #571636 -- it was happily resolved as caused by a broken config, but that config had worked for months before the "hardline" change. I suspect several of the repondents on bug #567756 also experienced the same -- possibly including the submitter. Please restore the behavior where a broken config means a partially-broken keyboard rather than a disabled one. A warning of some sort may be warranted as a means to letting a user know something's wrong, if that's suddenly become a priority after years of leniency, but killing the keyboard is, well, overkill. Also, if the keyboard is disabled, over a broken config, it warrants a log (EE) message IMHO. I have seen no such (relevant) messages in the logs, neither on my machine nor on the referenced bugs. Bug#574606: xserver-xorg-video-intel: screen distorted by intermittent flickering in 800x480 resolution mode
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2:2.9.1-2 Severity: normal I'm experiencing heavy flickering which distorts the otherwise correctly drawn screen when using a modeline for 800x...@60hz. The flickering seems not to be related to plain timing as it won't flicker when starting xserver using "xinit /usr/bin/xterm". When replacing xterm with something creating more screen updates like iceweasel flickering starts and gets even heavier when using an opengl application. In the opengl application I can see a relation between flickering and opengl buffer swap frequency, low opengl framerate->low flickering rate, high opengl framerate->high flickering rate, though the xserver mode stays unchanged at 800x...@60hz. The problem started to arise aroud the time when linux-image-2.6.32 appeared in squeeze but afaik around the same time there appeared newer versions of xorg and xorg-intel-driver. Before it was working with lenny/squeeze and the attached xorg.conf for about two years without any problems. Meanwhile tested against newver versions og libdrm/xserver/linux-image-2.6.33 from sid/experimental without success. The problem does not appear when running a default mode like 800x600 or 1024x768. But as I tested tons of modelines for 800x...@60hz (my screen needs 800x...@60hz, its picky) I got the feeling that this seems to be a general problem related to running 800x...@60hz on current xorg/xorg-video-intel, anyone please prove me wrong. It is not related to the monitor in use as it also happens with a default, up-to-date desktop screen (samsung 21" wide screen providing any timings in that range). The logfile attached was created when using this samsung screen. -- Package-specific info: /var/lib/x11/X.roster does not exist. /var/lib/x11/X.md5sum does not exist. Also, the motion is not uniformly smooth and seems to depend a lot on the background system activity. I have a shell script that updates the clock in my dzen2 status bar once per second, and the gears seem to stumble for a split second once per second as it happens. I tried stopping that script, and have confirmed that it indeed is causing the jitter, even though the load it puts on the system is tiny. This didn't happen without KMS and DRI2; not only did the animation run faster, but it was also smooth (without noticeable jitter). The kernel is linux-image-2.6.33-2-686 from experimental, and libgl1-mesa-dri is 7.7-4 from unstable. -- Package-specific info: /var/lib/x11/X.roster does not exist. /var/lib/x11/X.md5sum does not exist. Bug#461649: Follow-Up with pictures of black flickering bands
Hi, Brice. Thanks for keeping me apprised! The two hosts that had the problem were recycled and I don't have access to them. For our purposes, the bug "does not matter". Bug#564281: xserver-xorg-core: some keys mismapped under X
Hi, needles to say, the problem still persist in 1.7.5.902-1. And it has nothing to do with USB vs. PS/2. I tried one USB-keyboard and two ps/2-keyboards with exactly the same effect. So if anybody could give me a hint for further debugging fire away. I'm quiet willing to do my part but I start getting a bit frustrated with the lack of response. The experience is as described in freedektop.org bug 18160. I would prefer helping with a solution rather than being forced to downgrade xorg. In more detail: On an old AMD K7 I was running a multiseat setup with an equally old NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] rev 161 and an ATI Technologies Inc RV 610LE PCI [Radeon HD 2400] rev 0. First a Dummy X server was started, then the X server for the primary AGP NVidia card, and then the X server for the secondary PCI ATI card. After the upgrade the first two X servers start but the third hangs after loading int10. I will attach the xorg.conf files and the logs later. Best regards, Alexander. Bug#569691: still present with latest 2.6.32 kernel
Chris Butler (16/03/2010): > Is there anything that can be / is being done to get the fixed intel > drivers into squeeze's kernel? I'm happy to help if I can, although > I don't really know where to start. Is it worth reassigning / > cloning this bug to the kernel package? Please check what happens with 2.6.32.10 (2.6.32-4-$arch packages) first (it has DRM-related fixes from 2.6.33), but that'd be the idea. I happen to have a similar with a box of mine, so I'll probably won't forget about this bug. Mraw, KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
