Bug#548998: xserver-xorg: segfault at startup

2009-09-30 Thread Xavier Bestel

Hi,

the segfault is apparently known upstream (double DGA initialization), and
fixed by KP.

Thanks,
Xav

Bug#444483: Is this bug responsible for not sourcing ~/.profile ?

2009-09-30 Thread Andrei Popescu
Hello,

I just tried out xdm (instead of gdm) but noticed that .profile is not
sourced. Moving all '@include's at the bottom in /etc/pam.d/xdm didn't
make a difference either (or am I completely misunderstanding this?).

Regards,
Andrei

Congratulations, you're the 14th person to report this. Guess what, we
read the xorg mailing list, we know about this bug, and it'll be fixed
in 1.6.5.

Cheers,
Julien

Ewww, I guess the 14 of us are really sorry to bother you with a known
bug. Let's not do that again.

Help with Debian-Live - low resolution

2009-09-30 Thread stephen_b_al...@tiscali.co.uk
Hello,

I am hoping for help in resolving low screen resolution issues within
my debian-live builds compared to my knoppix re-mastered versions.
I detail one example a GeForce4 MX 440 but a bigger program for me is
that even modern HP Proliant servers still use Ati Rage.
In all these examples I can only select a max resolution of 800x600. I
would like 1024x768 as I can with Knoppix V5.3.1 My debian-live is a
lenny build with kde core V3.5.10.

I now list what I hope is relevent info, sorry it's so long.
I am of couse more than happy to supply further info and to try new
builds with any new suggestions etc.

My debian-live xorg.conf is sparse to say the least. Ideally I am
looking for an auto-detect solution as in Knoppix.
Apologies if I am asking too much and/or in the wrong place.
Here it is:

Bug#546714: (pas de sujet)

2009-09-30 Thread Ludovic CHEVALIER
Hi!

It's very difficult for me to send this bug report without fonctionnal
graphic interface. It's impossible for me to make a screenshot without
keyboard. It's very difficult for me to downgrade all the fine package
to restaure a fonctionnal version of xserver before upgrade with the
last testing packages. It's very difficult for me to send a bug report
without graphical tool.

But ...
I'm just reinstalled the last xserver version with a aptitude
dist-upgrade command.
I restarted X server without problem. But, when I restart my computer, I
have the same problem than my fisrt post.

I attached the fine command to this message for complete my last post.

Bug#549010: [xserver-xorg-video-radeon] black screen from the start after minor xorg upgrade

Downgrading to mesa 7.5 didn't help.
Now I switched to radeonhd, but it worse than radeon in terms of speed.
I'm also in the process of compiling the latest kernel version to check if it
helps.

Hi guys,

Since today, I cannot start X anymore. I tried with 2.6.30 and 31, and
it just segfaults. It used to work up to a couple of days ago without
any problem. AFAIK I did not change anything, so this may be due to a
recent upgrade of some packages (xserver ?)

I can provide full backtrace if needed.

I've the set bug grave, but there's a chance I'm the only one so feel
free to downgrade.

Version: 1.6.4

Hi,
after upgrade of xserver-xorg-core to 1.6.4 from 1.6.3.901 I get crashes
on startup. Log file with stacktrace is attached.

An upgrade of the intel driver from 2:2.8.1-2 to 2:2.8.99.902-1 (the
experimental version) fixed it.

kwe,

This should probably go to the relevant module package, my apologies if
I've done something wrong unintentionally.

Last night when restarting my X session, the server was crashing,
behaving abnormally. Then the dialog-based window came up from gdm
"would you like to see the error" so I check it out, and seems the
radeon driver was crashing out on me.. It wasn't doing this before, so I
figure it was the new update for Xorg, Xephyr, et al. doing it.

I'll paste the backtrace I got in the Xorg.0.log:

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
 at http://wiki.x.org
=

As you can see, something changed and it's making the radeon_srv.so module
crash.

PS: This AGP card I have to have an xorg.conf because EXA didn't used to be the
default,
and I have to force the mode to 4x, otherwise it starts making my mouse cursor
jiggle
from *something*, and eventually bring the whole box down (hard lock-up)
(separate issue).
The mode doesn't get detected properly I suspect, since it spits out something
like
"putting the card into 0x mode" in the log. Please make a not of this, but
don't include
this in *this* bug report, as it's a separate issue.

thanks,
Simon

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.4+3
Severity: minor

After upgrading Sept 28 2009 X aborted. My first thought was to upgrade from
2.6.30-2-686 to 2.6.31 to match to the build machine.
Instead I downgraded back to -xserver-xorg_1%3a7.4+3_i386.deb -
xserver-xorg-core_2%3a1.6.3.901-1_i386.deb
 xserver-xorg-input-evdev_1%3a2.2.4-1_i386.deb - and
xserver-xorg-video-intel_2%3a2.8.1-1_i386.deb

reportbug also failed after upgrading to xserver-xorg_1%3a7.4+4_i386.deb and I
was not able to reconfigure reportbug to text mode

in debconf information: below
* xserver-xorg/config/device/identifier: nVidia Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200]
was removed and onboard intel 865 video is being used presently.

Hi,

the segfault is apparently known upstream (double DGA initialization), and
fixed by KP.

Thanks,

Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.6.4-1
Severity: normal

After upgrading, X server just dies on startup, with SEGV (11).
I tried removing my /etc/X11/xorg.conf out of the way, to no avail.

Box is a Mac Mini intel.

Thx.

Bug#548321: #548321 [xterm] abort() a bit after catting binary file

2009-09-30 Thread Gennady
>Is this running in koi8rxterm (which sets locale to ru_RU.KOI8-R and
turns on the -k8 option), or just in xterm by itself?

Just in plain xterm.

bash shell, wmaker window manager. Farther, catting larger portion of this file
abort()s it without resizing.

I am running:

$xterm -e /bin/dash

In new xterm:

$zcat ~/Desktop/fail.gz

Resize window 1 character right, it aborts.

Locale setting is en_US.UTF-8.

I get xterm and libutempter0 debs to my nearby debian testing-favor box.

With original packages (xterm 235-2 and no libutempter), i got no abort.

With newly upgraded xterm I reproduced it where.

LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8, xfce window manager where.

Mb you didn't extract it?

Bug#548716: X server crashes upon startup with SEGV

2009-09-30 Thread Michal Suchanek
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Severity: normal

I do not see this mentioned here already

For me 1.6.3 X server with 2.8.1 Intel driver works, 1.6.4 X server with with
2.8.1 Intel driver crashes.

1.6.4 with 2.9 driver does not crash but does not find my display.

No, didn't try yet. I want to use the machine so I would prefer if I could
avoid bisecting.

The X server does not enable any pipe with the newer driver for some reason,

Does kms work?

Bug#549064: x11-xserver-utils: xmodmap hangs X for several minutes

2009-09-30 Thread Joachim Berdal Haga
Package: x11-xserver-utils
Version: 7.4+2
Severity: normal

When running xmodmap to change the keymap (i.e., not to just print them),
X hangs afterwards for several minutes until normal operation is resumed.
By "hang" I mean: Mouse pointer moves, but no screen refresh; can change
to text console. The processes "X", "dbus-daemon", "xfconf" and "xfwm4" use
100% cpu in the meantime.

I honestly do not know which component is to blame, but I'm filing it for
the triggering component (xmodmap) just to do something.

This may be related to the linux scheduler, maybe triggering some race,
see http://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/46642/.
But the scheduler is just part of it... it can not explain the following:

During the hang, I have tried to monitor the dbus traffic. It consists of
millions of lines like this:
mc 1254241765 672139 62949 :1.3/org/xfce/Xfconf
org.xfce.Xfconf GetProperty
mr 1254241765 673529 63079 62949 :1.3
mc 1254241765 674977 62950 :1.3/org/xfce/Xfconf
org.xfce.Xfconf PropertyExists
mr 1254241765 676253 63080 62950 :1.3

It looks like some loop is entered where properties are invalidated
repeatedly. Afterwards, everything is normal. I should mention that
the same thing happens when using gnome instead of xfce.

This is on (old, slow) VIA C3 processor and the VIA CLE266 graphics card
(xserver-xorg-video-openchrome server).

Bug#549085: xserver-xorg-video-intel: X server crashes with SDL application when no window manager is running

2009-09-30 Thread Ivan Vučica
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.9.0-1
Severity: normal

Running X server, and then running an SDL application results in a crash of
the entire X server in case a window manager is not started.

Example use case:
I am writing a login manager, and the easiest way to open graphics surface
(to me) is by using SDL. As soon as SDL launches, the server crashes.

This does not happen when using Xephyr, so I conclude this is probably a bug in
the Intel drivers.

Repro steps:
>From tty console, perform these steps:
1. X -ac :1
2. DISPLAY=:1 abuse.sdl

Possibly related:
Running window manager such as metacity, then killing it, also results in a
crash with same backtrace.

This is blocking me from developing this ultra-cool-hyper-neato login
manager, since if I run a window manager and then don't kill it, gnome-session
will happily do it for me and the end result is the same: crash of the entire
X server.

(Shameless plug, for those interested in some bad code: http://gldm.sf.net/)

retitle 549085 xserver-xorg-core: When first x client closes connection,

thanks

Spam, I know, I know.
However, with help of one friend, the bug was reproduced with xterm instead
of an SDL client, and also on Silicon Motion SM710. So, I'm reassigning (or
at least attempting to reassign) this bug to xserver-xorg-core.
Correct repro steps:
1. Switch to a tty vt.
2. X -ac :1
3. DISPLAY=:1 xterm
4. ctrl+c on the tty vt where you launched xterm.
5. Observe X crashing.

Same thing happens if a window manager is launched.

I presume SDL crashes immediately because it opens a client connection to
X.org, closes it soon afterwards, and then opens another one. Thus, after
closing the first connection, there is a crash and the second one (the one
that actually opens a window) never happens. This is just a guess.

Bug#548716: xserver-xorg-core

2009-09-30 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi all,

maybe this is not important or wanted:

all freetype-modules in this package are missing. Obviously they are missing
in testing and in unstable. In stable the modules are still there in this
package.

Hope it helps.

Cheers

Hans

Indeed, it appears to be the same. However I have found and already sent
some extra information and how to reproduce it easily. Namely, when the
first X client that connected to the X server closes the connection, the
crash happens.
If this first client was a WM, then terminating the WM crashes Xorg.
If this first client was xterm, then terminating xterm crashes Xorg.

I presume that SDL starts some auxiliary X connection that when it's closed,
causes the crash.

Additionally, this bug is at least several months old over here.

Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Not only that, but the bug was also reproduced on Silicon Motion SM710 so it
is not limited to Intel. I don't have a log since I asked a friend just to
try it out remotely.

Since the bug is not limited to Intel, about an hour ago I have reassigned

I am not sure which log you want, the relevant one was included, as well as
repro steps? :-)
I will be more than happy to include additional information as requested.

Initial mail was generated by reportbug. I have repeatedly reproduced this
bug with 2.9 installed, and even found a workaround for X clients (a call to
XOpenDisplay() and keeping the display open during the lifetime of the
session).

The only log I can see is in the initial report, and shows the crash
from #548716, so I think not?

Bug#548716: xserver-xorg-core: X server crashes upon startup with SEGV

2009-09-30 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi all,
I can confirm this on an amd-64/sid with an ATI graphics card.

Same messages as the other people reported. I tried to reinstall the packages
of testingm with no success. Just to get X started, I added "vesa" as the
driver, and X started.

But using "ati" or "radeon" is crashing with SEG 11.

I myself am using a Nvidia graphic card, which is running perfectly (using the
closed source driver).

Well, using driver "nv", which is the open source driver, is working, too.

IMO, this crash is mainly related to ATI-cards. Is there anyone, who confirm
this bug on cards other than ATI cards?

Any information is welcome.

Cheers

Hans

Keith made a mistake in the X server 1.6.4 release. He's got a patch
all put together now:

http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/2009-September/002318.html

which should be released very shortly as as 1.6.5 release.

#548716 was introduced in 1.6.4. So you can downgrade to 1.6.3.901 and
get a log from that. Or a backtrace from the crash in gdb.

This is a known bug in the upstream xserver 1.6.4 release. It will
affect any driver which tries to initialize DGA. Keith Packard is
cooking up a new 1.6.5 release to fix this bug. See his current patch

However, #548716 describes potentially different bug. They might be
unrelated. X11 start normally for me, but crash in my special use case.
Several other bugs I examined from the merge list appear to describe same
bug as #548716; this one might be different.

Additionally, most of the bug reports are very recent. #549085 has haunted
me for few months now, it's just that I never had the time to localize the
bug and report it.

I see you say in #548998 that the bug might be fixed in 1.6.5. I'll see if
it fixes the problem and report back.

2009-09-30 Thread Thomas Dickey

On Wed, 30 Sep 2009, Gennady wrote:

Is this running in koi8rxterm (which sets locale to ru_RU.KOI8-R and

turns on the -k8 option), or just in xterm by itself?

Just in plain xterm.

bash shell, wmaker window manager. Farther, catting larger portion of this file
abort()s it without resizing.

I am running:

$xterm -e /bin/dash

In new xterm:

$zcat ~/Desktop/fail.gz

Resize window 1 character right, it aborts.

Locale setting is en_US.UTF-8.

this breaks for me (will see if I can reproduce it with my own compile,
to debug it).

I get xterm and libutempter0 debs to my nearby debian testing-favor box.

With original packages (xterm 235-2 and no libutempter), i got no abort.

With newly upgraded xterm I reproduced it where.

LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8, xfce window manager where.

Mb you didn't extract it?

I did - but the conditions for reproducing it weren't apparent.

Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 1.6.4

Hi,
after upgrade of xserver-xorg-core to 1.6.4 from 1.6.3.901 I get crashes
on startup. Log file with stacktrace is attached.

An upgrade of the intel driver from 2:2.8.1-2 to 2:2.8.99.902-1 (the
experimental version) fixed it.

Dear maintainers,

after the last upgrade, it seems libc6 and X11 will not work together (I
cannot prove which one of both is causing the problem).

After the latest upgrade X inhibits to start and shows this message:

It looks like there is a problem with libc6. This problemn appears at a
user, whoms system I maintain (sadly the user is not experienced in debian
and linux, and I am 600km away). But I have ssh access to this system.

It would be nice, if you could take a look on this behaviour.

Thank you very much!

Bug#548045: video-intel: bisected

2009-09-30 Thread Michal Suchanek
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.9.0-1
Severity: normal
File: video-intel

Then I don't have modesetting because I did not add anything like that
to my kernel command line.

It turns out testing the symptom of this is quite easy and there are few
commits between 2.8 and 2.9.

Attaching a revert patch which works with the Debian 2.9.0 package.

Thanks

Michal

commit 02fe9be695f7e209944bd0f7b67950f93619feee

Check whether the DVI-I/D is connected or disconnected based on EDID

When the monitor is digital type for SDVO-DVI D, there should exist the
EDID. If
there is no EDID, it should be detected as disconnected.

Bug#548321: #548321 [xterm] abort() a bit after catting binary file

2009-09-30 Thread Thomas Dickey

With newly upgraded xterm I reproduced it where.

with these details, I was able to reproduce it.

It's technically a bug from #242, which happened to be noticeable after
the reorganization of memory starting with #244. (I have some test-builds
to do, and hope to finish #249 tomorrow).
