works fine.

Bug#463063: xserver-xorg-video-intel: session hangs with black screen when switching back from VT

2008-01-29 Thread Marcus Better
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.2.0-1
Severity: important

Sometimes when switching back to X from another VT (console or X), the
session does not come back. Instead I get a black screen, and it
doesn't respond to input.

I can switch to other VTs however, even other X sessions, and they
work correctly, but the broken VT is only restored after killing the
session.

X.org log files don't show anything that looks suspicious. I *think*
this only occurs on the second of two X session, i.e. display :1.

This is a Thinkpad R60 laptop running kernel 2.6.24 (amd64) with vesafb.

Bug#463061: xserver-xorg-video-intel: temporary display corruption after switching VT or suspending

2008-01-29 Thread Marcus Better
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.2.0-1
Severity: minor

The screen is often corrupted when returning back to X from another VT
(text or X), and on returning from suspend. Instead of a blank screen
(locked KDE session) it shows a mostly white/gray background with
static noise in it. When I press a key, the KDE password dialog comes
up on top of this. If the password is entered, the session is unlocked
and restored correctly.

I use vesafb on virtual consoles, however the effect appears also
after switching between X sessions.

Bug#324500: Another try, with new monitors.

2008-01-29 Thread Hylke van der Schaaf
Hi all,

I finally got some new nice flatscreens (You can imagine the desk space
I just saved by throwing out a 22" and a 20" CRT ;))

I figured this was a good time to try 1:1.9.100 again, and it works
flawlessly!

I guess the mga card or the driver just didn't like having two VGA
monitors. With one on DVI and one on VGA all the problems disappeared!

Great work,
Hylke

Nope, this doesn't help.

The following versions all exhibit the same problem:
1:6.7.198~git20080117.6bd510a2-1
1:6.7.198~git20080109.10e7636c-1
1:6.7.198~git20080102.30cab1db-1
1:6.7.198~git20080101.f65374f5-1

I then tried version 1:6.7.198~git20071221.be7f8fd3-1, but this one has
the "old" bug #457563 again, where the freeze already occurs on startup,
and trying "AGPMode" "4" or "BusType" "PCI" then still causes a freeze
on startup. So I cannot use this version... I assume earlier versions
have the same bug?

Trying either of the three options doesn't help; the same hard freeze
occurs on logout.

My X log states that "8" is not a supported value for "AGPMode" (even
though I read on Wikipedia that the Radeon 9200 should support 8x AGP),
so this doesn't help either, alas.

Thanks, it's good to hear options are being left open for getting the
wayward drivers caught up in time. I do have a couple suggestions:

Include a link to a page describing in general the type of work needed
to bring a driver up to date. This will both give them the scope of
work they'd be committing to, and highlight the objective(s) they should
focus on.

Point to a discussion forum of some sort where people interested in the
same driver can get in contact and potentially collaborate on efforts.

I can also forward the letter on to the busdev type folks at Canonical,
as they frequently bring up contacts that wish to use the second or
third tier drivers. I don't know if their drivers of interest will be
on the list, but it would be a good chance to raise awareness that a bit
of development involvement from these user companies could help improve
their collective situation significantly.

Hello there,

I have a PowerPC Mac Mini with a Radeon 9200 inside, and did a fresh
install of Debian Sid on that. I got bitten by bug #457563, where
starting X would instantaneously freeze the machine, but upgrading to
the latest experimental version of xserver-xorg-video-ati fixed that, as
suggested.

However, I now have the problem that the machine freezes when the X
server is stopped... Just a hard freeze when I try to logout, or
shutdown the machine, or restart gdm; anything that kills the X server
causes the entire machine to lock up. My Xorg.0.log contains no
information about stopping X.

The same freeze occurs when I try to start a second X, via "X :1"

A random guess would be try adding
   Option "AGPMode" "4"
or "8" to the Device section of your xorg.conf (or Option "BusType"
"PCI"). But this generally helps fixing crashes near X startup, not when
leaving X like here.

Did you ever try another 6.7.19x package from experimental (apart from
the buggy 6.7.197)? It would be nice to know when the problem first
appeared. These old packages are available through snapshot.debian.net

Unmaintained Driver Deprecation

2008-01-29 Thread David Nusinow
Hi everyone,

I think it's time to start dealing with driver deprecation on a more
active level. I'm not sure how far off server 1.5 is, but I'd like to be
well ahead of it in dealing with the changes it brings. It should be
obvious now that almost all the input drivers are going away, and a few of
the video drivers as well. My feeling is that we should give people a
chance to try and save these drivers though, so we should work up a mail to
debian-devel-announce detailing why these drivers will be going away, and
what people can do about it.

This week I'll come up with a list of the drivers that haven't been
ported to the new input and pci-rework frameworks and also compose a draft
of the mail. I'll send it here for comments so we can make sure it's well
written before it's sent. If you guys have any thoughts on the matter, or
suggestions for writing the mail, please let me know.

 - David Nusinow

Bug#463076: xserver-xorg-video-ati: machine freezes when X is stopped or second X started

2008-01-29 Thread Bram Senders
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.7.198~git20080117.6bd510a2-1
Severity: important

The same freeze occurs when I try to start a second X, via "X :1", and
an Xorg.1.log is never created.

Regards,
Bram Senders

Do any of the following device options help?
Option "DRI" "False"
Option "BusType" "PCI"
Option "AGPMode" "4"
Option "AGPMode" "8"

As the listed x.org tseng driver maintainer, i can tell you that -tseng
will be ported soon. It might even gain DDC in the process too.

The bulk of the work is getting a server with libpciaccess built. I'm
sure that most other drivers, except for a few, can be trivially ported
as well.

The biggest pains with libpciaccess were/are atimisc and IGP devices.
The easiest ones will be the drivers for antique pci devices.

Bug#463159: XCB-enabled libx11 causes hangs in various X clients

2008-01-29 Thread Joe Drew
Package: libx11-6
Version: 2:1.1.3-1
Severity: critical

This is only 'critical' because it causes unrelated software (e.g., Side
Effects Software's Houdini) to break by causing hangs. Feel free to
downgrade, but this is a very important bug to me, at least.

This is also reported upstream:
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9528

Simply upgrading to a XCB-enabled libx11 build causes clients to start
hanging inside _XReply. There is a bunch of analysis at
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xcb/2007-August/002961.html too.

To reproduce, download a build of Houdini 9.0 from www.sidefx.com and
run it. You will see various hangs almost immediately upon running
'houdini'.

I can help with all manner of debugging; I just don't understand X (and
in particular, libx11 and XCB) enough to do this myself.

Unfortunately, 6.6.193->6.7.191 is where lots of things have been
reworked to add RandR 1.2 support, so this is not going to be easy.

git-bissect'ing the old randr-1.2 branch of the upstream git repository
could help. But you will have to be motivated to do that :) Maybe
somebody else among the developers will have a better idea first.

Okay, after some experimenting I have found that 1:6.6.193-2 is the
newest version which doesn't cause the lockups, and the version after
that, 1:6.7.191-1, causes the system to freeze -- either by stopping X
or by starting a second one. So something went wrong from 1:6.6.193-2
to 1:6.7.191-1.

How do I debug this further?

Bug#463159: reassigning

2008-01-29 Thread Joe Drew
reassign 463159 libxcb1 1.1-1
forwarded 463159 http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9528
thanks

This bug is actually in libxcb1, not libx11-6. (Although I'm willing to
be proven wrong, and that it's some *interaction* between libx11 and
libxcb that's causing it.)

Thanks for the details, this is similar to #461783, reported upstream at
