These old packages are available through snapshot.debian.net The following versions all exhibit the same problem: 1:6.7.198~git20080117.6bd510a2-1 1:6.7.198~git20080109.10e7636c-1 1:6.7.198~git20080102.30cab1db-1 1:6.7.198~git20080101.f65374f5-1 I then tried version 1:6.7.198~git20071221.be7f8fd3-1, but this one has the "old" bug #457563 again, where the freeze already occurs on startup, and trying "AGPMode" "4" or "BusType" "PCI" then still causes a freeze on startup.
