Hi Brice,

I haven't been prompted about that file again. However I accepted dpkg's
prompting last time - I can't verify that the problem has been solved
based on this alone.

Also that conffile seems to belong to xlibs instead of xlibs-data now.

Bug#409289: xserver-xorg-video-nv: xserver-x.org becomes sluggish and keyboard unresponsive

For the record, I don't think I've seen a single case where strace
provided useful information about an X server issue. The most useful way
to find out what the X server is doing is to attach gdb to it (from a
remote login).

There's a couple of known hanger bugs in the nv driver, see upstream
Bugzilla.

Bug#409351: xorg-core does not actually pull in xfonts

2007-02-02 Thread prosolutions
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 1.1.1-15

I don't know if this got fixed in a very recent release, but within the
past month the xserver-xorg-core which supposedly depends on xfonts did
not actually install any fonts.

Bug#318149: fc-cache still not called but not a big problem any more

2007-02-02 Thread thomas weidner

fontconfig now seems to create caches per-user as needed.
look at the following example:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.fontconfig$ rm *
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.fontconfig$ su
Password:
silver-cube:/home/thomas/.fontconfig# aptitude reinstall xfonts-75dpi
[snip]
silver-cube:/home/thomas/.fontconfig# exit
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.fontconfig$ xfd -fa Sans
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.fontconfig$ ls -l
total 8
-rw-r--r-- 1 thomas thomas 96 2007-02-02 11:24
1487dd4aecf3164c4a11193169052443-x86-64.cache-2
-rw-r--r-- 1 thomas thomas 96 2007-02-02 11:24
eeebfc908bd29a90773fd860017aada4-x86-64.cache-2

those 2 files have just been created as a local cache. but now look at:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.fontconfig$ rm *
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.fontconfig$ su
Password:
silver-cube:/home/thomas/.fontconfig# aptitude reinstall xfonts-75dpi
[snip]
silver-cube:/home/thomas/.fontconfig# fc-cache
silver-cube:/home/thomas/.fontconfig# exit
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.fontconfig$ xfd -fa Sans
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.fontconfig$ ls -l
total 0

because now there is a valid cache information in /var/cache/fontconfig
there is no need to create one locally.
so the orginal problem (slow startup) only occurs at the first time
after font installation now (local cache has to be (re)created).
I think xfonts-75dpi not calling fc-cache in postinst is still a bug, as
i see no use in every user having it's own cache (and it's own waiting
time while its created) for system wide installed fonts.

I'd say severity is minor now,for it's more a cosmetic issue not really
affecting usability of the system.

PS: thanks for reminding me of this bug.

No, this file isn't shipped in any package in current etch/sid. The xkb
files are now in /usr/share/X11/xkb/.

No it doesn't. xserver-xorg-core recommends xfonts-base and suggests
some more fonts, but there's no Depends.
If you want to install a complete X Window environment, install the xorg
package.

Problem hasn't changed for me, but I haven't upgraded my
distro. I expect the etch package will be OK, because when
I reported the bug it had already been fixed upstream. And
meanwhile I wrote about a workaround on
http://www.cus.cam.ac.uk/~ssb22/source/freetype.html

Bug#372909: [Fwd: Bug#372909: Support for 'Cherry CyMotion Master LINUX' keyboard]

2007-02-02 Thread Fabian Greffrath
Hi!

Thank you for the response to the bug report.

I have not tried out most of the keyboard's special keys since the time
when I had it new. I have (hopefully) reverted all the changes I've done
to the config files and deleted the init-script from my system.

Now let's see what xev tell when pressing those special keys?

* 5 keys on the left: -nothing-
* 5 keys on the right: -nothing-

* browser keys (back, forward, cancel, reload, search):
keycode 234 (keysym 0x1008ff26, XF86Back)
keycode 233 (keysym 0x1008ff27, XF86Forward)
keycode 232 (keysym 0x1008ff2a, XF86PowerOff)
keycode 231 (keysym 0x1008ff73, XF86Reload)
keycode 229 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol)

* media player keys (play/pause, stop, prev, next, eject):
keycode 162 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol)
keycode 164 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol)
keycode 144 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol)
keycode 153 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol)
-nothing-

After some playing around with the keys (trying them in
gnome-keybinding-properties), the first and the second suddenly show:
keycode 162 (keysym 0x1008ff14, XF86AudioPlay)
keycode 164 (keysym 0x1008ff31, XF86AudioPause)

* above numeric keypad (calc, email, home, standby):
keycode 161 (keysym 0x1008ff1d, XF86Calculator)
keycode 236 (keysym 0x1008ff19, XF86Mail)
keycode 178 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol)
keycode 227 (keysym 0x1008ff10, XF86Standby)

* bottom row (volume up, volume down, mute, media player):
keycode 174 (keysym 0x1008ff11, XF86AudioLowerVolume)
keycode 176 (keysym 0x1008ff13, XF86AudioRaiseVolume)
keycode 160 (keysym 0x1008ff12, XF86AudioMute)
keycode 237 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol)

You see, there are still some issues left with the keyboard. Some keys
are recognized wrongly, some are not recognized at all.

Yeah I think we can probably close this. If you deliberately remove it
and don't reboot then it won't be created with the right permissions but
there isn't a lot you can do about that really.

If I move it out of the way xfce4 still starts with startx (though it's
possible that starting it a second time would fail).

X looks to be doing mostly the right thing for sane setups.

Bug#362977: Cycling thru external screen a workaround?

2007-02-02 Thread era eriksson
I am typing this from a Libretto U105 running the Ubuntu Edgy i386 Live
CD. I am only just familiarizing myself with this machine, but I already
accidentally found that at least once, the Fn+F5 screen cycling key
would seem to fix the problem. (Cycle through external and external+LCD
and back to LCD only: doesn't matter if you actually have an external
screen).

Just a quick note lest I forget (have nowhere else to save this
information :-) but I'll try to follow up with more details if this
seems to work out in the long term.

Hi,

I think I found why my XFCE4 fails to start when starting it via startx.
It seems that the .ICE-unix directory in /tmp is created as the current
user, but the session-manager needs the directory to have root as owner.
IIRC XFCE4 from kdm works, because kdm ist run as root and creates the
.ICE-unix directory.

If startx is actually supposed to create the .ICE-unix directory then
please move this bug over to the proper X11 package.

Hi,

I've upgraded to X.org 7.0 from experimental and I also installed the
mesa-utils package since glxgears is no longer part of xbase-clients.

But glxgears from mesa-utils seems to be broken:

- When glxgears is first launched, the image is shifted left in the
window (only the rightmost few cogs of the large red cogwheel are
visible, everything left to it falls outside of the window)
- If I switch destop & go back, the image appears at the right position
(center of the window) for a split second and then jumps back to the
  previous position
- If I move the window, the image appears at the center of the window,
but as soon as the mouse leaves the glxgears window, the window goes
  completely blank

Moreover glxgears from mesa-utils do not print any frame rates, so it's
pretty useless.

Bug#372909: Support for 'Cherry CyMotion Master LINUX' keyboard

As I wrote, this keyboard needs a script that adds (with setkeycodes(8))
some keycodes to the kernel.

Also, the list of codes in the xkb definition was incomplete, but since I
count 31 lines now – the same amount as in the definition I wrote myself
when I bought this keyboard a few years back – I assume the current xkb
has a complete keyboard definition for the special keys.

An alternative would be to use the included (open-source!) daemon, but
it's overkill to dedicate a daemon to a few multimedia keys especially
since Gnome and KDE provide more integrated ways to bind these keys
anyway.

If one installs said script so it gets executed when the system boots and
if one selects the right keyboard definition in a recent X version, this
keyboard should work just fine.

There is no bug with either XKB or X anymore, the definition is now
complete, so this report should be closed or forwarded to someone that can
include the boot script for those that have this keyboard.

Severity: normal

The problem with libXft-2.1.5 described at
http://lists.freedesktop.org/pipermail/xlibs/2004-March/000263.html
appears to be still present in this version.

In particular, when I do: fc-list : file | grep dpi

(looking to see if it found any of the 100dpi or 75dpi
directories, which it certainly should have done because
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts is listed in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf
which I have not changed), there is no output.

I really want it to be able to load the bitmap fonts because
they render much better than the scalable ones (as long as
you get the applications to ask for exactly the right size,
which you can do by messing around with Xft.dpi in
.Xresources if all else fails). The best configuration I
can find for scaled fonts is

Xft.hinting:true
Xft.hintstyle: hintfull
Xft.antialias: 0

but it's still not very good (probably due to the fact that
it can't use the patented algorithms) so I want to stick to
the bitmap fonts.

Is there any way of getting an improved version of libxft2
on sarge without having to upgrade the whole distribution or
break all the dependencies?

Ok, thanks. Since this bug is quite old, I guess the fix got included
upstream before Xorg 7.1 was released. So it's probably fixed in Etch.
Feel free to reopen if you ever reproduce.

package: xlibs
severity: wishlist

Hello!

Since the last weekend I am the proud owner of this special
Linux-keyboard manufactured by Cherry [1]. It has only one problem: It
does not work under Linux ;)

After plugging the keyboard in (PS/2) I changed the line
 Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to
 Option "XkbModel" "cymotionlinux"
and restarted X to see if the new buttons work.

Well, xev told me that about half of the special buttons (e.g. the ten
on the left and right side of the keyboard) do not even send keycodes to
the X server. On the cdrom which is bundled with the keyboard there is a
package which installs you a daemon (!) to interpret the key events as
well as somthing like a control center application, which wants you to
install half of KDE as well...

Because I did not want to run the daemon, I started some web research
for an alternative way to get the special keys working and found a very
detailed (german) howto in an ubuntu-forum [2]. They refer to a command
line to set the right keycodes which can be found in a (again german)
howto from Gentoo [3]. The line reads like this:

 setkeycodes e065 136 e070 161 e032 172 e05f 143 e063 145 e06d 171 e00b
177 e012 178 e017 137 e00a 135 e018 133 e071 148 e02c 149 e072 202 e007
129 e008 131 e05b 200

After running this as root and hacking it into a runlevel script as
suggested, now X receives a keycode from every single key on this
keyboard. We see, it is possible to get it running without Cherry's
daemon, simply using X's 'household remedies'.

--> My question is: Why do I have to do this manually? Why doesn't X
interpret the keys correctly, although the "cymotionlinux" keyboard
model is selected in the xorg.conf?

Next problem is, that now all keys send keycodes, but most of them have
cryptic names while some others send names like 'XF86Stop'. The ubuntu
howto now tells that in this case you have to edit the
file /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/inet in order to add some lines to the
'xkb_symbols "cymotionlinux"' section and remove some other lines. After
another restart of X, all buttons now send their 'names'.

--> Next question: Why do I have to do this manually? I expect that if a
keyboard is supported, that all of it's keys are translated in
the /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/inet file.

This problem is not limited to the xlibs-packages, because xkb-data and
xkb-data-legacy also include the
(incomplete/wrong) /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/inet file.

Is there any chance to get this fixed?

Thank you very much.

Nice greetings,
Fabian

Package: xlibs-data
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
Severity: normal

When I upgraded from X 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 to 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1 (specifically
xlibs-data), I was prompted to accept conffile changes to the file
/etc/X11/xkb/symbols/dvorak.

I have not changed this file myself though. I have attached the old
file and the new.

You *need* the init script. The problem is that the kernel doesn't listen
to some of the keyboard scancodes. You have to add them by using
setkeycodes(8). X(KB) can't do much about that. Check the script in my
first post. These settings work for me, for all keys. They will likely
work for you too.

media: state 0x10, keycode 129 (keysym 0x1008ff32, XF86AudioMedia),
home: state 0x10, keycode 130 (keysym 0x1008ff33, XF86MyComputer),
reload: state 0x10, keycode 231 (keysym 0x1008ff73, XF86Reload),
play: state 0x10, keycode 162 (keysym 0x1008ff14, XF86AudioPlay),
stop: state 0x10, keycode 164 (keysym 0x1008ff15, XF86AudioStop),
prev: state 0x10, keycode 144 (keysym 0x1008ff16, XF86AudioPrev),
next: state 0x10, keycode 153 (keysym 0x1008ff17, XF86AudioNext),
eject: state 0x10, keycode 204 (keysym 0x1008ff2c, XF86Eject),
...

(Don't mind any different KeySym names, I'm using my own definition, but
the XKB one has all the same keycodes now.)

Again, if you don't initialise the keycodes with setkeycodes, the kernel
will not send scancodes for some of the keys – like the ones on the side
– and X(KB) will not be able to recognise them.

My xorg.conf keyboard section:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
#Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "cherrycymoli"
Option "XkbLayout" "eu_intl"
Option "XkbOptions""grp:caps_toggle,grp_led:caps"
Option "XkbGeometry" "pc(pc104)"
#Option "XkbVariant""nodeadkeys"
EndSection

If you have an extra "less/greater than" button in the lower left corner,
change pc104 to pc105. Change XkbLayout to the layout of your country
(eu_intl does not exist, it's something I wrote to get better support for
more European languages and UTF-8 punctuation characters in one single
keyboard definition). Change XkbModel to 'cymotionlinux'.

Apart from that, as you probably know, you need to bind the keys to
actions in KDE or Gnome, if they are not set already. Note that last time
I messed with keybindings in Gnome, it did not recognise some modifiers –
KDE's keybinding facilities are far better and more flexible.

What concerns X(KB), I don't think there are any problems left with the
keyboard definition in xkb/symbols/inet, which is what this bugreport is
currently assigned to.

Prob. mon or tues at the earliest.

Thanks for all your hard work on the X subsystem, it must be a real

Xorg slow?

2007-02-02 Thread Lurkos

Hello all!
I found a lot of documents that says that Xorg is better than Xfree86,
but I realized that Etch/Xorg is significantly slower than Sarge/
Xfree86 on my computer.
Is it normal?
Shall I open a bug?
I told this problem to a lot of user, but I can't find any accurate
answer and I think this could be a problem that regards the inner
structure on the X server (or the MGA driver?).

Computer:
Pentium III 800 MHz
768 MB SDRAM (133 MHz)
Matrox G450 32 MB AGP (fully supported by MGA driver)

Tests with:
- same computer
- same resolution ([EMAIL PROTECTED], LCD native)
- Gnome
- X properly configured
- DRI on

*glxgears*
- Debian 3.1 (Xfree86): 410 fps
- Debian 4.0 Live (Xorg): 320 fps

--> Xorg 25% slower than Xfree86

Other tests:
*tuxracer*
Debian Sarge: usable without problems
Debian Etch: unusable (it's not fluent)
*supertux*
Debian Sarge: 59 fps (with opengl)
Debian Etch: 48 fps (with opengl)
