If it's an X server bug, how is it causing the crash of the splash
screen, which occupies an entirely different address space?

What's the actual bug? Have you got a backtrace?

Bug#366355: libx11: ssh -X between Sarges XF86 and Sids Xorg7 - static Nedit works -> Nedit bug?

2006-05-18 Thread Ingo Juergensmann
Hi!

I did some more testing...

- Sid/ppc -> Sid/ppc : works
- Sid/ppc -> Sarge/i386 : doesn't work (same error)
- Sid/ppc -> Sarge/m68k : doesn't work (same error)

Whereas "Sid/ppc ->" means that I'm connecting from my desktop via ssh -X to
the remote box.

- Sid/ppc -> Sarge/i386 starting "worker" : works

So, I tried a static build of nedit from
http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/editors/nedit/NEdit/v5_5/executables/nedit-5.5-Linux-x86.tar.bz2
and it worked from Sid/ppc -> Sarge/i386. Nedit finalley opened its window
again on my desktop.

I don't know if that means that it's a Nedit problem or not? At least other
graphical apps like "worker" are working via ssh -X where Nedit fails.

Bug#364288: Bug#331435: xserver-xorg: Mouse pointer occasionally vanishes

> Both of you, please also make sure (e.g. using xlsclients) that there

I checked this, there is no client left, except the one started by
xinit. Usually this is my window manager Openbox, but I did try once
to make xinit start an xterm instead, and then start Openbox
afterwards. That enabled me to kill Openbox without also pulling down
the X server - without that having any effect. I started another
window manager afterwards (Window Maker, if I recall correctly), but
 yhe defunct state persisted.

So the only suggestion I have left is that Openbox is somehow
triggering a bug in X11R7, or vice verca. In the latter case, however,
it is weird that the state remains even after Openbox is killed and
another window manager is started in its place. Openbox hasn't changed
in a while, either... In any case, I'm running fvwm now, to see if the
hang also occur in an X session where Openbox has never been present.
I haven't seen a hang yet, but I have done it for too short to conclude
 yet. I'll keep you posted.

Bug#365134: which X server is correct?

2006-05-18 Thread Sanjoy Mahajan
I just ran into this problem as well, and was about to report the same
workaround (changing /usr/bin/X11/xdm to /usr/bin/xdm in /etc/init.d/xdm
and /etc/X11/default-display-manager). But I'm still not sure which X
server to use in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers. There's

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1878204 2006-04-03 23:44 /usr/bin/X11/Xorg
[from xserver-xorg 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6]

or

-rwsr-sr-x 1 root root 7800 2006-04-03 23:44 /usr/bin/X11/X
[from xserver-common 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6]

Is one better than the other?

Bug#365134: Dirty work around

2006-05-18 Thread Matt Taylor

I got this working by changing:

in /etc/init.d/xdm: /usr/bin/X11/xdm to /usr/bin/xdm
in /etc/X11/default-display-manager: /usr/bin/X11/xdm to /usr/bin/xdm
in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers: /usr/bin/X to /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg

I am hoping that there will soon be an upgrade that will set the config files
to something better. But, it works for now.

Bug#367979: x-window-system-core is broken/missing fonts.alias file?

2006-05-18 Thread rds
Package: x-window-system-core
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6
Description: x-window-system-core is broken/missing fonts.alias file?

Debian / testing

Hi,

Installed kdebase and x-window-system-core packages. However, "startx" results
in the "could not open default font 'fixed';" error. According to the
http://wiki.x.org/wiki/FAQErrorMessages#head-a570197d15005a2c71cbb5e565114e2c04a573a3
it may be because "There is also a possibility that the
[fontpath]/misc/fonts.alias file is missing."

I do not have "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias" file on my system. In
fact, it appears that there's no "fonts.alias" file installed anywhere:
# dpkg -S fonts.alias
dpkg: *fonts.alias* not found.

Any ideas? Thanks

the X server's font paths might be misconfigured, remote font server(s)

People inexperienced with the X Window System should have either the
"x-window-system" or "x-window-system-core" packages installed.
# apt-get install x-window-system-core
# apt-get install x-window-system

Other useful commands to run include:
$ dpkg --status xserver-common
$ dpkg --status xfonts-base
$ zmore /usr/share/doc/x11-common/FAQ.gz

Incidentally, per the latest Debian Policy, it's now legal to wrap long
dependency fields including Conflicts in the debian/control file using RFC
2822-style continuation. It's still a little annoying to edit since most
editors aren't smart enough about wrapping to not wrap in the middle of a
dependency string (which while allowed isn't particularly easy to read),
but if you're willing to depend on this capability (dpkg should cope
without any trouble), it might make it a bit easier to edit.

Bug#366695: marked as done (xserver-xorg-video-i810: Depends on unavailable xserver-xorg-core on etch.)

Package: xserver-xorg-video-i810
Version: 1:1.5.1.0-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Due to a power outage, I had to re-boot my etch box after some months,
during which I'd updated it, so am now using the modern xserver-xorg-*
package fragments, where I was using a more monolithic xorg when last
I booted. When re-booted, I got no xdm up.

Initially, this was because /etc/init.d/xdm referred to
/usr/bin/X11/xdm, which no longer exists. When I amended that, I
still got failure, since /etc/X11/default-display-manager had also
survived, and referred to the same xdm. Reverting the prior amend and
inserting a symlink in /usr/X11R6/bin/ solved those problems, so that
xdm at least *tried* to start up.

It still failed, now saying that it couldn't make sense of the
hardware (I've had a very grim six hours since then, of trying to get
my machine back in an X-compatible state, without success, so don't
remember the exact wording; having now reverted to as close as I can
remember to that state, I lack the /usr/bin/X that xdm wants). Then I
remembered that xorg had recently gone into many-package form, so went
looking for a suitable xserver-xorg-video-* for the hardware reported
to me by lspci:

:00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL
Express Chipset Family Graphics Controller (rev 04)

It looks like the package I want is xserver-xorg-video-i810; but, when
I tried to install that, it was broken, because it depends on
xserver-xorg-core, which is not present in etch. So I can't actually
install this package to find out whether it really is what I need.

There seems little point making a package available to testing when it
depends on a package unavailable to testing.

Carving up a package into lots of little packages is a cool move, as
long as all hardware set-ups whose support has moved into one of those
packages are still catered to by a set-up on the branch (in this case
testing) on which the big package provided support before its demise.

Package: xdm
Version: 1.0.1-6

Inconsistencies in downgrading from sid to etch lead me to completely
reinstalling Debian. So, this report is about Debian etch as of today.
I installed from the CD image
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/etch_di_beta2/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso.
I deselected "desktop" and "standard" to prevent the gnome overhead from
being installed. After rebooting into the fresh system, I updated apt and
upgraded the installed packages via ftp. Then, I installed xserver-xorg,
xdm, my preferred window manager, a few other packages, and all their
friends-and-relations.

(1) At some stage, startx failed because some scripts expect xdm to reside
in /usr/bin/X11 whereas etch installed it in /usr/bin. A symbolic link
helped.

At this stage, if not earlier, I was able to start X11 from tty1 via startx.

(2) /etc/inittab comes with default runlevel=2. It seems that I have to
change this manually.

(3) After the n-th reboot, no progress: still a vt100 login to tty1
instead of the graphic X11 login screen. At last, I found an enlightening
message in xdm.log: "server /usr/bin/X cannot be executed" "server open
failed for :0, giving up" and so on. Another link towards /usr/bin/X11
helped.

xdm developers: _please_ prevent Debian from becoming gnome-only.

- Joachim

Package: xdm
Version: 1:1.0.1-6
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hello,

The paths to, at least, the xdm and X executables are not set up
correctly.

Some init scripts or configuration files, including /etc/init.d/xdm or
/etc/X11/default-display-manager expect the xdm executable to be in
/usr/bin/X11/xdm while the package installs it in /usr/bin.

Moreover, the xdm executable (I think) looks for /usr/bin/X while X is
to be found, in debian testing, in /usr/X11R6/bin. The same problem
occurs for, at least, xrdb which is looked for in /usr/bin but to be
found in /usr/X11R6/bin.

I suppose this is due to the upgrade of Xorg in debian unstable reaching
testing.

Best regards,

  olivier ponsini

Package: x11-common
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-7
Severity: wishlist

Following the IRC discussion with Overfiend and later comments from
gravity, here is the complaint written down as bug report:

please consider no longer using "set -e" in the Xsession script or at
least set +e and -e later before/after the scripts in Xsession.d are
interpreted.

Reason: those scripts can be buggy and return with non-zero return
codes. Their maintainers may even be unaware of the outcome because they
are not testing it properly or don't handle all possible problems
because of the "works-for-me" paradigm. Or even worse, they read that
policy paragraph in their own way and interpret "or handle the exit
status" as a real OR (and not every maintainer is a good shell
programmer).

I know this sounds a bit constructed but there are cases where it fails.
And a simple error in some script should not make the whole startup
system fail. Even interpreting the policy as "other should fix their
crap, the bugs are there" is a bad excuse: the idea behind the policy
was IMHO the requirement to write failure-tolerant/correcting scripts,
while Xsession is deliberately designed to fail itself.

Eduard.

The /usr/X11R6/bin symlink, and /usr/X11R6 directory, are not removed
when the package is purged. I noticed this when a buildd chroot was
not cleaned properly after a build of an X11 package.

Package: xdm
Version: 1.0.1-6

I'm using etch and had no problems with xdm before but since the last upgrade
(didn't upgraded a while) xdm does not start any more. If I invoke
/etc/init.d/xdm from commandline as root nothing happens (no output, no
logfiles (/var/log/xmd.log , Xorg.0.log) written).
I made an `apt-get remove --purge xdm && apt-get install xdm` to be sure
configuration files are reinstalled, but the problem still existed.
I tracked down the problem to the line:
DAEMON=/usr/bin/X11/xdm
in /etc/init.d/xdm
/usr/bin/X11/xdm does not exist in my debian installation. Instead of
/usr/bin/X11/xdm I found that xdm is installed at /usr/bin/xdm
so I changed the above mentioned line in /etc/init.d/xdm to
DAEMON=/usr/bin/xdm
With that change /etc/init.d/xdm produced following output:
---
$ /etc/init.d/xdm start
Starting X display manager: xdm
---
But X does not start anyway. But I get a log entry in /var/log/xdm.log saying:
---
Sun May 14 12:08:07 2006 xdm info (pid 5676): starting
Sun May 14 12:08:07 2006 xdm info (pid 5676): starting X server on :0
Sun May 14 12:08:07 2006 xdm error (pid 5678): server /usr/bin/X cannot be
executed
---
/usr/bin/X cannot be executed because /usr/bin/X does not exist in my
installation. It shoud say /usr/X11R6/bin/X but I didn't found out, where to
change that. I stopped my research at that point.

startx does work and the xorg Xserver starts normally.

reinstalling Debian. So, this report is about Debian etch as of today.
I installed from the CD image
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/etch_di_beta2/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso.
I deselected "desktop" and "standard" to prevent the gnome overhead from
being installed. After rebooting into the fresh system, I updated apt and
upgraded the installed packages via ftp. Then, I installed xserver-xorg,
xdm, my preferred window manager, a few other packages, and all their
friends-and-relations.

(1) At some stage, startx failed because some scripts expect xdm to reside
in /usr/bin/X11 whereas etch installed it in /usr/bin. A symbolic link
helped.

At this stage, if not earlier, I was able to start X11 from tty1 via startx.

(2) /etc/inittab comes with default runlevel=2. It seems that I have to
change this manually.

(3) After the n-th reboot, no progress: still a vt100 login to tty1
instead of the graphic X11 login screen. At last, I found an enlightening
message in xdm.log: "server /usr/bin/X cannot be executed" "server open
failed for :0, giving up" and so on. Another link towards /usr/bin/X11
helped.

xdm developers: _please_ prevent Debian from becoming gnome-only.

- Joachim

Hello,

I cannot upgrade the package on my system because it repeatedly fails
with:

rmdir: /usr/X11R6/bin: Directory not empty
x11-common postinst error: Could not remove /usr/X11R6/bin. Is not yet
empty
dpkg: error processing x11-common (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 74
 Errors were encountered while processing:
  x11-common
  E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Well, yes, there is one remaining file added manually by me, however the
postinst should not rely on that and fail otherwise.

Eduard.

Around 36 lines into 20x11-common_process-args, the following code
is missing some quotes around the $1:
STARTUP_FULL_PATH=$(which $1 || true)

If $1 should contain a space, then all heck would break loose.

DAEMON=/usr/bin/X11/xdm
in /etc/init.d/xdm
/usr/bin/X11/xdm does not exist in my debian installation. Instead of
/usr/bin/X11/xdm I found that xdm is installed at /usr/bin/xdm
so I changed the above mentioned line in /etc/init.d/xdm to
DAEMON=/usr/bin/xdm
With that change /etc/init.d/xdm produced following output:
---
$ /etc/init.d/xdm start

I've just tried to upgrade xdm to 1:1.0.1-6, from a
not-very-old 6.9.something version (sorry, I don't think I can now find
out what the old version was). I have not upgraded any other X
packages.

When xdm tries to start, according to /var/log/xdm.log :
server /usr/bin/X cannot be executed

This comes from /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers, which has this path hardcoded.
My X server seems to be in /usr/X11R6/bin/X, provided by xserver-common
6.9.0.dfsg.1-4.

My guess is that the location of the X server has changed recently, and
that if I now upgraded my other X packages it would now work properly.
But I'm not going to test this.

One solution would be to make xdm depend on whatever package it is
that provides the X server, so that it will find it in the right place.
Otherwise some mechanism to find X wherever it is installed is needed.

Hello,

there was an upgrade of xdm a few days ago and now xdm is no more automatically
launched at boot.
The bug is reproducible and the following workaround is reproducible too :
At the console prompt, I log in in text mode, type "startx", play X, end the X
session and log out at the text console prompt.
Everything else is working as before except there is no more graphical log in.

I use xfce (if this helps?).
I suspect a start line commented in an init script.

Have fun making Etch !

To be able to check boot script order, and also to be able to start
boot scripts in parallel, it is important to know the dependencies of
the various boot scripts. The Linux Software Base specifies a init.d
header file format useful for this purpose, and adding such header to
the init.d scripts would make it possible for me to use this
information to check the current sequence and speed up the debian
boot.

http://refspecs.freestandards.org/LSB_2.1.0/LSB-generic/LSB-generic/initscrcomconv.html>
documents the LSB header format. Some debian notes are available from
http://wiki.debian.org/?LSBInitScripts>.

Here is a proposed dependency header to document the dependencies of
x11-common. It is slightly tested using the insserv package and the new
parallell booting support in sysvinit.

If xdm is restarted, e.g. via the /etc/init.d/xdm script,
any (valid) login fails. There is no error message, it looks like,
as xdm "restarts" the x-server after the login.

At the moment, my only known solution to the issue is a reboot.

Bug is reproducable also on a friend's laptop.

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.14
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After an apt-get dist-upgrade today, the X server would no longer start.
Running "startx" gave no output, and when gdm refused to start up it gave no
error message.

This was apparently solved when I thought to do "apt-get install xserver-xorg".
I did this just to make sure the package was up-to-date. But when I ran it I
found that xserver-xorg had not been installed at all! After installing it,
tthe X server and gdm now seemingly start up correctly.

This is probably not a bug in the xserver-xorg package per se. Most likely it
is a bug in another package that should, but does not, depend on this package.
However I didn't know where else to report it.

Also of interest is that when I ran reportbug it reported that my version of
xserver-xorg was more recent than that in debian. I'm not sure what this could
mean, except for the possibility that an older version has been uploaded since
I installed it (mere minutes ago).

Hi,

The changelog for x11-common (and a lot of other XOrg packages) contains
the following at the bottom:

Older changelog entries (back to 4.0.1) can be found in
  changelog.Debian.old.

However, the file changelog.Debian.old is not currently shipped by any
X-related package in Sid. It does exist in source package "xorg", but
it would be much more convenient if it was also available in a binary
package; probably x11-common would be best since most of the XOrg binary
packages depend upon it.

Package: xdm
Version: 1:1.0.1-6
Severity: normal

Hello,

there was an upgrade of xdm a few days ago and now xdm is no more automatically
launched at boot.

DAEMON=/usr/bin/X11/xdm
in /etc/init.d/xdm
/usr/bin/X11/xdm does not exist in my debian installation. Instead of
/usr/bin/X11/xdm I found that xdm is installed at /usr/bin/xdm
so I changed the above mentioned line in /etc/init.d/xdm to
DAEMON=/usr/bin/xdm
With that change /etc/init.d/xdm produced following output:
---
$ /etc/init.d/xdm start

DAEMON=/usr/bin/X11/xdm
in /etc/init.d/xdm
/usr/bin/X11/xdm does not exist in my debian installation. Instead of
/usr/bin/X11/xdm I found that xdm is installed at /usr/bin/xdm
so I changed the above mentioned line in /etc/init.d/xdm to
DAEMON=/usr/bin/xdm
With that change /etc/init.d/xdm produced following output:
---
$ /etc/init.d/xdm start

Hi,

I've just upgraded from xorg 6.9 and I couldn't start KDE anymore. I
found out that the problem was whith the ICE socket directory, that
didn't exist. This directory is supposed to be created by the x11-common
init script, but when "verbose" is set to "no" in /etc/default/rcS the
script exits just after create the X11 socket directory. I replaced
"exit 0" in the script by "return 0" and now it works all right.
See patch attached.

Thanks,
Gilmar Santos Jr

If xdm is restarted, e.g. via the /etc/init.d/xdm script,
any (valid) login fails. There is no error message, it looks like,
as xdm "restarts" the x-server after the login.

At the moment, my only known solution to the issue is a reboot.

Bug is reproducable also on a friend's laptop.
