I got this working by changing: in /etc/init.d/xdm: /usr/bin/X11/xdm to /usr/bin/xdm in /etc/X11/default-display-manager: /usr/bin/X11/xdm to /usr/bin/xdm in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers: /usr/bin/X to /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg
