Bug#284448: Got it. back traced core dump

Hmm, well, given your backtrace, I might have been wrong about this being

Can you show us the output of "bt full -9" instead, please?

Sorry---I got the idea of `7' wrong.

There seems no debug info inthe memcpy() libc call.

The answer to FAQ "My keyboard configuration worked with XFree86 4.2;
why is it messed up now?" has some minor errors. When I started cleaning
them up, I decided to clarify the language too. A patch is attached. Let
me know if you have any questions about anything I changed.

This bug relates to
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=181579
but it is stated that this bug is archived and cannot be changed, so I
open a new one.

On
http://necrotic.deadbeast.net/xsf/XFree86/trunk/debian/local/FAQ.xhtml#lefthandmouse
the following section can be improved with the proposed replacement
below.

=
How do I set up the mouse buttons for left-handed use?

Thanks to "ulisses" for suggesting this question for the FAQ, and
providing some of the information given.

This depends on how many buttons your mouse has. If it has two or three,
I have an answer. If it has more than three, and/or a wheel, I'd
appreciate submissions from lefties with such mice who have gotten them
reconfigured.

For a quick fix, you can execute the following while in an X session:
xmodmap -e "pointer = 2 1"  (for two-button mice)
xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1"(for three-button mice)

To have the pointer buttons remapped for all of your X sessions, add the
following line to your $HOME/.Xmodmap file (creating the file if
necessary):
pointer = 2 1   (for two-button mice)
pointer = 3 2 1 (for three-button mice)

and call xmodmap $HOME/.Xmodmap from your $HOME/.xsession file. Note,
however, that the system administrator can configure the X Window System
such that users' .xsession files in their $HOME directories are ignored.
See the Xsession.options(5) manual page for more information.

For more information about xmodmap, see xmodmap(1x).

The following information is courtesy of Osamu Aoki.

There is a gpm-based approach to solving this problem if the XFree86 X
server is configured to use /dev/gpmdata for a mouse device. The -B
option to gpm should help. You can use it by adding it to the append
line in /etc/gpm.conf.

How do I set up the mouse buttons for left-handed use?

Thanks to "ulisses" for suggesting this question for the FAQ, and
providing some of the information given.

Use one of the following command depending on how many buttons
your mouse has.

xmodmap -e "pointer = 2 1"(for two-button mice)
xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1"  (for three-button mice)
xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1 4 5"  (for three-button + wheel mice)

Note that the 4 and 5 buttons represent the wheel up and down actions
and thus should not be modified.

To have the pointer buttons remapped for all of your X sessions, add the
following line to your $HOME/.Xmodmap file (creating the file if
necessary):
pointer = 2 1 (for two-button mice)
pointer = 3 2 1   (for three-button mice)
pointer = 3 2 1 4 5   (for three-button + wheel mice)

and call xmodmap $HOME/.Xmodmap from your $HOME/.xsession file. Note,
however, that the system administrator can configure the X Window System
such that users' .xsession files in their $HOME directories are ignored.
See the Xsession.options(5) manual page for more information.

Package: allegro-demo
Version: 2:4.1.14-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Hi,

Running 'all-demo' from X seriously breaks the system. The video mode
changes into something my monitor can't recognize, keyboard input seems to
be discarded and XFree86 goes into a loop eating all available CPU. I can
still log on remotely, but killing all-demo has no effect. Even killing X
does not help, since it seems to be respawned into the same state, but with
a different process number.

Here are the few last lines of strace before killing the process, I can send
the complete version, if needed:

Bug#285943: Font antialiasing looks bad (looks like an mga driver related problem)

2004-12-16 Thread Hársfalvi Levente

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-9

When I configure X to use the mga driver, X font aliasing looks ugly
(see attached screenshot). The fonts get a colored outline in result of
the antialiasing filter. Looks like there's some problem in the 2d
filtering routine. If I make a switch to the fbdev driver (reconfigure X
to use fbdev), everything goes well (see second screenshot).

I downloaded the latest mga driver from Matrox and gave it a try, with
the same results.

My videocard is a G550 ( Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G550 AGP rev 1 ). The
Display is a Sony SDMX-82 18" TFT, DVI cable, I'm using it in 1280x1024
24bit.

I'm using Debian GNU/Linux Sid with a self-compiled 2.6.8 kernel and
libc6 2.3.2.ds1-19.

(Attached: config files and screenshots for both mga and fbdev
configuration.)

Best regards,

L.

Bug#236086: New sun/us file breaks keyboard layout

2004-12-16 Thread Henry Margies
Hi,

after upgrading xlibs to version 4.3.0.dfsg.1-9 my keyboard was not
usable anymore (Q was Tab, Compose was Enter, Find was m). XFree86
sayed:

syntax error: line 104 of sun/us
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Error:Error interpreting include file "sun/us"
>   Exiting
>   Abandoning symbols file "default"

The problem was in sun/us in each line, that contained srvr_ctrl. I
disabled all of them and the keyboard worked again. I guess the changes
from Denis Barbier are responsible for this:

  Changes by Denis Barbier:

  * Make Sun keyboards load srvr_ctrl(xfree86) symbol definitions to
have access to standard Ctrl+Alt key sequences. (Closes: #236086)

I have a SUN Ultra 5, running kernel-image-2.4.26-sparc64 on an unstable
debian.

I have no idea why srvr_ctrl is not working, so I don't know which
further information you may need. I did /usr/share/bug/xlibs. I attached
the output.

Thx

Henry

Bug#285992: xfree86: restore Xprint PMF files to orig.tar.gz

2004-12-16 Thread Branden Robinson
Package: xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-10
Severity: minor

Restore the Xprint PMF files to upstream .orig tarball, and update
prune-non-free and the copyright file accordingly. It appears they're
free after all.

Severity minor because:
  A) Xprt isn't workable in XFree86 4.3.0 anyway (use xprt-xprintorg); and
  B) We'll have to re-roll the orig tarball for this, bumping us to
 4.3.0.dfsg.2.

Okay, I'll take your word for it on this part.

I am afraid I'm not persuaded here, but I'm not really the person to argue
with about it. Hamish Moffatt, who maintains xpdf-chinese-simplified,
xpdf-chinese-traditional, xpdf-japanese, and xpdf-korean, is.

If you're right, that'd be great. If I understand correctly what is
keeping those packages in Debian non-free, then maybe we can move them to
Debian main.

In any case, if you're right about the blanket submission of the "original
files" under the MIT/X Consortium license, then the issue is surely void.
If they're not copyrightable, they're free for us. If they're
copyrightable and MIT/X licensed, they're also free for us.

I wish there were a historical record to refer to in this case, but as I
said, I'll take your word for it until I hear a persuasive case to the
contrary.

Thanks for the explanation!

A later patch removed architecture restrictions entirely.

In Debian, now, the XFree86 ELF loader uses mprotect(PROT_EXEC) on all
Linux and OpenBSD systems.

I can't imagine why. It does indeed look like you're SEGVing on the first
module loaded, but the code the way it is currently, I'm having difficulty
figuring out why.

If you're not going to be able to gather more information about this
problem, I'm afraid we're going to have to close the report.

Is that the case?

Bug#275735: xserver-xfree86-dbg: Removing DRI module does not help

Michel, I have to admit I'm a little surprised by this.

What precisely does disabling the "DRI" module in the XF86Config-4
accomplish that making the DRI modules unavailable by removing the
xlibmesa-dri package doesn't?

If I had to guess, I'd say that codepaths usually found in XFree86's
driver/$FOO/FOO_dri.c don't get followed. And in that case, any bug which
doesn't go away when xlibmesa-dri is removed but does when the "DRI" module
is disables properly belongs in the xserver-xfree86 package.

Does setting LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 do anything distinguishable from
removing the xlibmesa-dri package? If so, can you propose a debugging
order for seemingly DRI-related problems? Maybe the following:

  1) try to repro with LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1
  2) try to repro with xlibmesa-dri removed
  3) try to repro with 'Load "DRI"' commented out of XF86Config-4

?

Thanks for your help in understanding these pretty basic issues.

Have you tried 'Option "HWcursor"'? (Note: I'm not sure the i740 driver
even supports this option.)

Hmm. Can you please try 'Option "XaaNoPixmapCache"' and 'Option
"XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps"' in separate invocations of the X server?

Thank you for doing all this research!

I'm afraid we probably can't help you with the whys and wherefores of
driver support of specific models of display adapter, but the author of the
driver in question might be able to: his name is Thomas Winischhofer, and
his webpage about his SiS driver for XFree86/XOrg is at the following site:

http://www.winischhofer.at/linuxsisvga.shtml

Note that according to this site, the SiS 330 *is* supported. Perhaps
support for it was dropped for a while but later restored. The version of
the SiS driver in Debian's XFree86 4.3.0 packages is quite a bit newer than
the stock XFree86 4.3.0 version.

I understand that backports.org now has a backport of 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8
available, so that may be useful to you.

Did you perhaps upgrade your kernel? xfree86 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8 hit sid about
28 September, quite a while before your dist-upgrade on 29 October.

Very odd.

Does the debugging X server, in the package xserver-xfree86-dbg, work?

Failing that, can you install strace, log in remotely, and launch the X
server (as root) from strace?

Hopefully we'd get some sort of idea what system call is being issued
shortly before the lockup. And by logging in remotely you should be able
to capture the strace output.

I haven't heard of this bug happening with any other display manager, but
if we're going to treat it as an xserver-xfree86 bug report, let's treat it
as an xserver-xfree86 bug report.

[The following is a form letter.]

more information is required of you before this bug can be handled. Please

Thank you for the detailed report!

It would be nice to have your XF86Config-4, just for completeness.

I assume from the title of your report that the problem goes away if you
specify 'Option "NoAccel"' in the "Device" section of your XF86Config-4?

Here's the relevant part of the source code:

   117 /* There is a HW race condition with videoram command buffers.
   118 You can't jump to the location of your put offset. We write put
   119 at the jump offset + SKIPS dwords with noop padding in between

   121  #define SKIPS  8
   122
   123  void
   124  NVDmaWait (
   125 NVPtr pNv,
   126 int size
   127  ){
   128  int dmaGet;
   129
   130  size++;
   131
   132  while(pNv->dmaFree < size) {
   133 dmaGet = READ_GET(pNv);
   134
   135 if(pNv->dmaPut >= dmaGet) {
   136 pNv->dmaFree = pNv->dmaMax - pNv->dmaCurrent;
   137 if(pNv->dmaFree < size) {
   138 NVDmaNext(pNv, 0x2000);
   139 if(dmaGet <= SKIPS) {
   140 if(pNv->dmaPut <= SKIPS) /* corner case - will be
idle */
   141WRITE_PUT(pNv, SKIPS + 1);
   142 do { dmaGet = READ_GET(pNv); }
   143 while(dmaGet <= SKIPS);
   144 }
   145 WRITE_PUT(pNv, SKIPS);
   146 pNv->dmaCurrent = pNv->dmaPut = SKIPS;
   147 pNv->dmaFree = dmaGet - (SKIPS + 1);
   148 }
   149 } else
   150 pNv->dmaFree = dmaGet - pNv->dmaCurrent - 1;
   151  }
   152  }

This sort of problem is way over my head. Tagging "help".

No need to apologise. :-) You are right to point out that there is
information that should be read, and taken into account.

Okay, I'll add some information on this. I am now running Ubuntu Hoary
(Sid equivalent) with X.org 6.8.1. Using KDE 3.3, no problem, memory
usage of X in total rarely went over 80 MiB. Then I switched back to
Gnome In three hours, X has grown to have a 135 MiB rss section.
xrestop says there is 31.6 MiB total use of X.

Might be worth checking with anyone else seeing this problem if they are
using Gnome at all. Does the problem go away when using KDE? When I was
running OpenBox as window manager, I was still running gnome-panel and
gnome-settings-daemon. Those two apps could be culprits of the 'memory
leak'. I could be talking out of my ass here, but I am just thinking out
loud.

I will give that a shot. I should see in less than 12 hours if that has
any effect on memory usage in X really.

Bug#286013: xserver-xfree86: MGA driver locks up w/ accelleration

2004-12-16 Thread Christoph Reichenbach
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line ***

  While the MGA driver on XF86 4.2.1 works perfectly, it locks up very quickly
in
4.3.0 (running xdm, or opening an xterm and dumping two pages of text are
sufficient). The bug is also present in 4.3.0.dfsg.1-9 and in several versions
in between; 4.3.0-2 (the first release of 4.3.0 for alpha) is the first release
to exhibit this problem.
  My machine is an UP1000 (nautilus), the G400 is attached to the AGP slot;
the machine's firmware is an API-internal SRM release. I tried debugging for a
bit,
but couldn't make sense of what I was getting (I don't have MGA docs);
basically,
at some point the G400 stops emptying the (command?) fifo, causing WAITFIFO()
(mga_macros.h) to wait indefinitely. Disabling

 has only Version 4.2.1-15.backports.org.1

but Norbert gaved me the link to the Version 4.3.0.dfsg.1-7
on  and on
 is explained WHY
it is not on backports.org.

Bug#277832: #277832 xterm: copy/paste of non-ISO-8859-1 characters between uxterm windows

2004-12-16 Thread Thomas Dickey
Actually I did fix the hard part. The remainder is user-preferences which
can be easily set with resources.

In #197, I also added a section to the manpage describing the use of the
clipboard - you should try that (sounds as if your click in the other window
is asserting the primary selection, e.g,. by moving the mouse a little as
you do the click). Once the source has lost the primary selection, it can't
be fixed. The clipboard selection is less volatile.

Unfortunately I was unable to test this fix due to lack of hardware,
and it was broken :(
You have to remove trailing semicolons on include lines.

Right, three hours usage of Gnome and X.org (same thing observed on
XFree86) with the two options XaaNoPixmapCache and XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps
set has resulted in 'ps waux' telling me about X that it is taking up
127 MiB in the RSS section and in total 157 MiB. At the same time
xrestop claims there are 22 clients, Pixmaps 11660K, Other 459K and All
12120K. Biggest client usage is 3756 KiB according to xrestop.

Running 'pmap' on the PID of the X server gives me one line that stands
out like a sore thumb,
08794000 106412K rw---[ anon ]

If there was a way to track what processes are using that part of the X
server, perhaps I could then find out exactly what program it is that is
allocating memory and not freeing it.

For the time being, I will avoid using Gnome as that seems to be what is
aggravating the issue.

It prevents the X server from initializing and using the DRM and the DRI
in general.

That's one example, yes.

Or the kernel.

2) is kinda redundant, both have the same effect, the only difference
being that 1) doesn't even try to load the DRI driver whereas 2) tries
but fails. It may be a good idea to set LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose as well
though to make sure that LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 is actually in effect.
Beware that if it is, there will _not_ be any special output, whereas if
it's not, there will be something like

libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 4.0.1 r200 (screen 0)
libGL: OpenDriver:
trying /home/michdaen/src/mesa-cvs/Mesa/lib/r200_dri.so

drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci::00:10.0

> 3) try to repro with 'Load "DRI"' commented out of XF86Config-4

That's a good second step.
