Bug#183364: xserver-xfree86: xtt module has unresolved symbols

2003-03-04 Thread Henrique de Moraes Holschuh
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-6
Severity: normal
Tags: sid

Trying to start X results in:
Skipping "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libspeedo.a:spencode.o": No symbols
found
Symbol FontFilePriorityRegisterRenderer from module
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libxtt.a is unresolved!

Commenting the xtt module and enabling the freetype module instead allows it
to run, but with yucky font support ;-)

xmame giving X a sig11 for past half year

2003-03-04 Thread Jonathan Walther

I have set up a lot of custom modes in my X configuration so I can play
my arcade games in their original video modes. This works great.

Unfortunately, when we made the jump to Xfree86 4.2 (actually, it may
have been before then, but definately by the time 4.2 rolled around)
Xfree started dying whenever I exited mame. mame itself works great; I
can play my games. The irritation is that I lose my entire X session
after a good session of Galaga and Frogger; IRC sessions, Mozilla
sessions, etc. It is as bad as the old days when I dual-booted Windows
just to play Warcraft II. Please help me get rid of the bad old days
again.

I did an strace on xmame, however, it produces NO output from the crash;
the last messages stop at the point where the xmame is all started up
and nicely playing my game. Then when it crashes, strace prints
 or something similar. That's it.

Here is the /var/log/Xfree86.0.log file as requested, and I have
included my kernel dmesg below it:

Oh my! I didn't expect to have to pull in unstable packages for
  translating! Anyway...

2003-03-04 Thread Drew Parsons
If I remember right someone has gone to the trouble of compiling the latest
(4.2.1) debs for woody.

Branden, would it be possible for you to add a link to these unofficial
woody repositories on the X Strike Force page? It could be a nice way to
help us encourage others to use Linux via Debian stable, while letting them
get full support for their video cards.

I can't reproduce it with the recipe above, but that's just because
nothing is printing the error message: it does still segfault. Try this
instead, which reproduces it here on i386 with xbase-clients 4.2.1-5:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ MANPATH=`perl -we'print "a" x 8192'` xman
Xman Error: No manual pages found.
  [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ MANPATH=`perl -we'print "a" x 8193'` xman
  Segmentation fault

I'm working on a patch for this. The xman code is riddled with static
buffers.

[This is a form letter.]

Hello,

You recently filed a duplicate bug report against Debian's XFree86
packages; that is, the problem had already been reported.

While there is often nothing inherently wrong with doing so, the filing of
duplicate reports can cause Debian package maintainers to spend time
performing triage and maintenance operations on bug reports (e.g.,
instructing the Debian Bug Tracking System to merge the duplicates) that
could otherwise be spent resolving problems and doing other work on the
package.

One very good way to file bugs with the Debian Bug Tracking System is to
use the "reportbug" package and command of the same name. A very nice
feature of reportbug is that, if the machine where you run it has network
access to the World Wide Web, it can query the Debian Bug Tracking System
and show you existing reports. This reduces the chance that you'll file a
duplicate report, and offers you the option of adding follow-up information
to an existing bug report. This is especially valuable if you have unique
information to add to an existing report, because this way information
relevant to the problem is gathered together in one place as opposed to
being scattered among multiple, duplicate bug reports where some facts may
be overlooked by the package maintainers. The reportbug program also does
a lot of automatic information-gathering that helps package maintainers to
understand your system configuration, and also ensures that your message to
the Debian Bug Tracking System is well-formed so that it is processed
correctly by the automated tools that manage the reports. (If you've ever
gotten a "bounce" message from the Debian Bug Tracking System that tells
you your message couldn't be processed, you might appreciate this latter
feature.)

Therefore, I strongly urge you to give "reportbug" a try as your primary
bug reporting tool for the Debian System.

One way to install reportbug is with "apt-get"; for
example:

  $ apt-get install reportbug

The "reportbug" command has a few different modes that cater to different
levels of user expertise. If this message has contained a lot of jargon
that is unfamiliar to you, you likely want to use reportbug's "novice"
mode; here's one way to do that.

  $ reportbug --mode=novice
Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem,
or type 'other' to report a more general problem.
  >

If you're more sophisticated, or if you are not using the released version
of Debian ("stable"), but instead Debian "testing" or "unstable", you
should use reportbug's standard mode.

  $ reportbug
Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem,
or type 'other' to report a more general problem.
  >

The reportbug command is extensively documented in its usage message and
manual page. Commands to view these pieces of documentation are:

  $ reportbug --help | more
  $ man reportbug

(The output of the above commands has been omitted from this message.)

Thanks for using the Debian system!

There are actually some 2.4 kernels available for m68k, but due to an
issue related to glibc[1] that started somewhere in the glibc-2.2 area,
they don't boot.

There used to be a bug report on glibc regarding that issue, which was
rather quickly reassigned to the kernel-patch-2.4.7-m68k package. Since,
to date, nobody ever solved the issue, the latter package has now been
removed from the archive.

[1] note that I'm not pointing fingers here, I'm not skilled enough in
that area to tell who's "fault" it is.

In such cases it's okay to manually edit the version number placed there
by the bug reporting tool.

I cannot do much with this report until I have the information described
in the XF86Config(7) manual page. The reportbug command from the
package of the same name collects this information automatically.

What's the real problem? I'm running 2.4.20 (from Linux/m68k CVS) on my Amiga,
with glibc-2.2.5-3? Or is this version glibc too old to exhibit the problem?

Hi Branden,

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 lets me pick 'ati' or 'radeon', and
since 'radeon' seems more specific to my hardware, I chose that one. I
might change and see what happens, although I've not noticed any
problems so far ...

Oh, damn. I know why this is. It started showing up when I added the
code that "autodetected" the video drivers. Damn damn damn.

Now I'll have to manually exclude them, and force existing values of
"radeon" and "r128" to "ati". Sigh. :-P

Thanks for the heads-up.

The problem seems to be that afb is not being built on sparc, but other

Is that the exact version string? Looks like something's broken

I don't know such an issue, but glibc-2.3.1 also causes the problem?

I am trying to build some 2.4.20 packages. The last version I tried was
2.4.18, which was mostly stable, but it still froze from time to time. And I
think it did not work together with xdm. I have one built for my Amiga, but
I cannot test it until I return home. I will try to build generic
kernel-images for all subarches, so more people can test them, its not
enough to have 2.4 kernel-images, they better work at least as good as the
2.2.20 we are using now.

xmame giving X a sig11 for past half year

Please help me get rid of the bad old days
again.
I did an strace on xmame, however, it produces NO output from the crash;
the last messages stop at the point where the xmame is all started up
and nicely playing my game. Then when it crashes, strace prints
 or something similar. That's it.
Here is the /var/log/Xfree86.0.log file as requested, and I have
included my kernel dmesg below it:

Oh my! I didn't expect to have to pull in unstable packages for

Drew

One way to install reportbug is with "apt-get"; for
example:

  $ apt-get install reportbug

The "reportbug" command has a few different modes that cater to different
levels of user expertise. If this message has contained a lot of jargon
that is unfamiliar to you, you likely want to use reportbug's "novice"
mode; here's one way to do that.

  $ reportbug --mode=novice
Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem,
or type 'other' to report a more general problem.
  >

If you're more sophisticated, or if you are not using the released version
of Debian ("stable"), but instead Debian "testing" or "unstable", you
should use reportbug's standard mode.

  $ reportbug
Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem,
or type 'other' to report a more general problem.
  >

The reportbug command is extensively documented in its usage message and
manual page. Commands to view these pieces of documentation are:

  $ reportbug --help | more
  $ man reportbug

Package: xserver-xfree86

After installing 4.2.1-6 (yes, the bug report shows 4.2.1-5 but thats because I
downgraded
since the new version won't work) all GTK windows stay black, and desktop background

only show when I switch to another VC and then back to X.
