Between xfree 4.1 and 4.2 these symbols were added to libXrender (at
least):

XRenderCompositeText8
XRenderCompositeText16
XRenderCompositeText32

but the shlibs file still lists the dependency on 4.1.0. It should be:

libXrender  1 xlibs (>> 4.2.0)

libxft2 uses these calls, so although it claims to depend on xlibs (>>
4.1.0) it will fail to load if xlibs 4.1.x is installed.

Package: xlibs
Version: 4.0.3-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

I found a bug in the ICE library. Below, I append a patch
to fix this. Unfortunately the situation is somewhat
complex, so it is not easy to reproduce the problem and to
verify the correctness of my patch.

A sample program to reproduce the problem may be downloaded
from

http://www.mathematik.uni-kl.de/~wwwstoch/voss/icebreaker-1.0.tar.gz

If you have any questions I will be glad to provide further
explanations.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM:

When two hosts communicate over an ICE connection and use
different major opcodes for a subprotocol, it is impossible
to use message replies.

Let HOST-A and HOST-B be two hosts which communicate over an
ICE connection and use a subprotocol PROT. Both have
obtained an opcode for PROT, HOST-A got the opcode 1 from
`IceRegisterForProtocolSetup' and HOST-B got the opcode 2
from `IceRegisterForProtocolReply' (he uses several
protocols simultaneously, so the value is not 1).

Now HOST-A sents a message wich requires a reply. In order
to do so he sets up an `IceReplyWaitInfo' and calls
`IceProcessMessages':

IceReplyWaitInfo  reply_info;
Bool  reply_ready;

reply_info.sequence_of_request = IceLastSentSequenceNumber (ice_conn);
reply_info.major_opcode_of_request = opcode;
reply_info.minor_opcode_of_request = PROT_Question;
reply_info.reply = reply;

do {
IceProcessMessagesStatus  process_status;

process_status = IceProcessMessages (ice_conn,
 &reply_info, &reply_ready);
...
} while (! reply_ready);

The `reply_info.major_opcode_of_request' field contains the
value 1, now.

Next, HOST-B's reply arrives while HOST-A is executing the
function `IceProcessMessages'. Within this function, the
`reply_wait' is registered via the command

_IceAddReplyWait (iceConn, replyWait);

This makes ICE wait for something with major opcode 1. But
the variable `header' has `header->majorOpcode == 2',
because HOST-B sent it this way. So the following call

useThisReplyWait = _IceSearchReplyWaits (iceConn, header->majorOpcode);

(also from `IceProcessMessages') does not find my
`reply_wait' because ICE searchs for the major opcode 2, not
1! I think this is a bug in the ICE library.

SAMPLE FIX:

The following fix modifies `IceProcessMessages' to translate
opcodes before comparing them. The patch is against the
XFree86-3.3 source, but maybe it will apply anyway.

Hi Branden,

If there is no display manager installed, then it is possible
that a Xvnc session is started before the lokal XWindow server.
In this case Xvnc creates /tmp/.X11-unix with the wrong
permissions, and XFree86 will refuse to start. I had exactly
this problem a few minutes ago.

I would suggest to create /tmp/.X11-unix at boot time by one
of the startup scripts.

Regards

Harri

`man 5 xfs.options' points to a /etc/X11/xfs/xfs.options file. That file
 ^
does not exist. /etc/X11/fs/xfs.options does.

Either the man page should be changed or the directory xfs gets its conf
files from. I tend to think /etc/X11/xfs is a more natural choice than
/etc/X11/fs.

Cheers,
Cristian

I found a bug in startx script. It tries to identify hostname version, with
hostname --version but hostname prints its version to stderr, not stdout.
Therefore the version printed to stderr and the startx script cannot get the
version string.

Here is the small patch:

This is even worse than the GLX problem. Who doesn't build an X server
with XKB support these days? Assuming the X11 headers are on the box
seems kind of dumb.

It is dawning on me that few people have tried BuildServersOnly since
Alan's commit on the 11th.  :(

Howdy,

Recent changes to the mesa package aren't reflected in xlibmesa yet.
Packages which used to build-dep on libgl-dev may now need to also add
libglu-dev. xlibmesa should provide this now too (or it will probably
get passed over as an option to buildd).

It also needs to conflict with mesa-common-dev (else it fails to install
when replacing mesa).

thanks,
Ron

After upgrade to Xfree 4.2.1, several times we experienced xfs crashes.
(quite bad, because it causes several user sessions on terminals to crash)
At last one of our users found an reprodusable sequence of actions to
crash xfs. So I've tracked the bug.

It dereferences a NULL pointer in xc/lib/font/fontfile/fontenc.c

The following patch fixes the problem:

Either have to build X11 library when building GLX library, i.e.:

Change X11.tmpl from:
261 #ifndef BuildX11Lib
262 #define BuildX11Lib BuildLibraries
263 #endif
to:
261 #ifndef BuildX11Lib
262 #define BuildX11Lib BuildLibraries || BuildGLXLibrary
263 #endif

Or figure out how to make lib/X11 dump its headers in xc/export/include and do
nothing else (like build).

Nighthawk 1.0-14 dies with SIGSEGV on Alpha before it displays
anything. With GDB and mcheck_pedantic(), I traced the problem
to heap corruption in the Xpm library. xpmParseDataAndCreate (in
xc/extras/Xpm/lib/create.c) sets ximage->f.put_pixel=PutPixel32,
but the PutPixel32 function assumes that unsigned long is 32-bit,
although it's actually 64-bit on the Alpha. XPutPixel will then
write past the end of the pixel and often also past the end of a
malloced block.

The Xpm library already tries to support 64-bit processors: if
the WORD64 or LONG64 macro is defined, it disables PutPixel32 and
always uses the more portable functions PitPixel32MSB or
PutPixel32LSB instead. However, it seems the library was
compiled without these macros.

I guess that WORD64 means int is 64-bit and LONG64 means long is
64-bit; then LONG64 would be appropriate for Debian on the Alpha.

What would be a good place to define the macro?
already conditionally defines it; should the Xpm sources then
include this header?

Recently I tried to run xload on a high loaded server (load was more
than 10), and discovered that if window size is rather small, scale
lines are drawn incorrectly (upper than needed).

This is caused by a bug in Xaw/StripChart.c.
It draws lines with fixed integer steps. Than means that if window
height is 39 pixels, and 10 lines should be drawn to split view into 11
equal parts, lines will be drawn at 3, 6, 9, ,.., 30. So the bottom part
height will be 9 pixels while other parts height will be 2 pixels.

A patch to fix this is below. When applied, it makes part heights differ
no more than by 1 pixel.

Screenshots are at http://zigzag.lvk.cs.msu.su/~nikita/xload.png.
The top window is xload linked against patched libXaw, the bottom window
is xload linked against original libXaw.

Package: xprt
Version: 4.2.1-3
Severity: important
Tags: patch

Hi Branden,

as you know, I've now added xprint-xprintorg to the archives. There's a
couple of trivial changes worth making to xprt to fit in with my new
package. I've marked this bug report as "important", in line with bugs
#18061/#86881 (also marked as important), since xprt won't even pretend to
work without the config files provided by xprt-common. But since xprt
(XFree86's Xprt) doesn't work anyway in practice (with the config files it
starts but doesn't print), feel free to downgrade the severity.

xprint-xprintorg provides two binary packages:
xprt-common:config files and init script
xprt-xprintorg: server binary (Xprt).

I therefore recommend two changes to the xprt package:
1) update the description to point out that xprt does not work, and
xprt-xprintorg should be used instead. (should xprt recommend xprt-xprintorg?)
2) depend on xprt-common

I recommend against a third change:
3) let xprt conflict with xprt-xprintorg.

With respect to this latter point, I've arranged xprt-xprintorg to install
Xprt into /usr/bin, while xprt puts it in /usr/X11R6/bin/Xprt, so there is
no strict need for the two packages to conflict. The init script
/etc/init.d/xprint provided by xprt-common uses /usr/bin/Xprt
(xprt-xprintorg) if installed, otherwise it invokes /usr/X11R6/bin/Xprt
(xprt). For the record, Roland Mainz, the xprint.org upstream author, would
prefer the two to conflict, but I would prefer to override him on account of
freedom: if someone really wants to install xprt, even though it doesn't
work, then good luck to them. Maybe they just want to have a glimpse to see
what's wrong with it. Debian shouldn't prevent them from doing that.

Thus, I would recommend the xprt section of xfree86's control file to look
something like:
###
Package: xprt
Architecture: any
Depends: xprt-common, ${shlibs:Depends}
Description: X print server (XFree86)
 xprt provides an X server with the print extension and special DDX
 (Device-Dependent X) implementation.
 .
 This package provides Xprt, the Xprint server from XFree86. Note that this
 version is buggy and does not work with mozilla. You should install
 xprt-xprintorg instead, which provides full support for printing from
 mozilla, including non-latin characters and MathML.

###

I'll leave it to you to decide if xprt should Recommends: xprt-xprintorg.

Note that the provision of xprt-common also permits bugs #18061/#86881 to
be closed.

Enjoy :)

Drew

p.s. with regards to bugs #21440/#31399, I'm planning to make some man pages
for xprint.org soon.

Bug#175996: Xinerama for GNOME 2

2003-01-22 Thread Xavier Bestel
I just want to chime in: since Xinerama support has been disabled in
gtk2, my desktop is near unusable. I have one screen smaller then the
other, so there's a "dead area" in which panel menus and windows may be
lost, and there's no way (I know of) to access them.

So yes, I *desesperately* need Xinerama.

Xv doesn't work with i810 in X 4.2.1 (it worked with X 4.1.x).
When trying to play movies with xine or mplayer using Xv as output the movie

Bug#177867: X Server Crash

2003-01-22 Thread Frank Mulder
Package: x-window-system
Version: ?
Severity: normal

The log file is attached.

I have a fresh installation of Debian (3.0), and I typed 'startx', but
the server crashed as you can see in the log file. (First the screen
flickered and then it returned to the command line). It says that I don't
have enough memory, but that shouldn't be right, because I have 112 MB
RAM and almost 200 MB swap. Maybe you can tell me how to check how much
RAM I have (well, how much ram debian says I have). Another problem can
be that I have selected vga for video card, while I have an S3 compatible
card. How to change this? Actually I don't expect this is the main
problem, but you'll know this better than I.

Thanks for your help.

Bug#175996: Xinerama -- Patches in libgtk2

2003-01-22 Thread Koenraad Heijlen

Same here, it's weird libgtk2 uses patches to work around a packaging
bug.

Hope you guys can fix it.

_or_

Could you point me to a working pre Xfree 4.3 package.

I've been using http://hanzubon.org/ packages, but that site is login
protected atm *bummer* (http://hanzubon.org/Linux/Debian/HANZUBON/).

regards, koenraad.

I think I see them as different usages. Your "In future" phrase is
positioned as a supplementary clause, so grammatically it could be omitted
in way that wouldn't work with the "in the future" at the end of the
sentence. I don't know if this is technically true in a grammatical sense,
but it's how I "feel" the correctness.

What I mean is, I feel the following sentences are both OK:

"In future, you should do this."
"I will do this in the future."

whereas these feel wrong:

"In the future, you should do this."
"I will do this in future."

Actually, no, now I've talked it through, I think I see what the rule is.
It's the difference between the future as an abstract concept, and a
specific (though unknown) point in time which happens to occur later than
the current point in time. Grammatically, this is the difference between
"imperfect" and "perfect" verbs, which is important in day-to-day usage
of Russian verbs, among other things. It's the difference between "I was
doing it (but never finished doing it)" and "I did it (and finished doing it)".

"in future" means you're talking about something that will (or should)
generally be done, without claiming it to have actually been done at any
particular point of time.

"in the future" means it will have been done at some particular point in time.

In the case of XFree86's Xprt server eventually working, we can say that
there will be a specific release made at some particular point in time, and
therefore I believe "in the future" is correct.

That's I explain my choice of phrase, anyway :)

Don't forget that (in my opinion) this also allows #18061 and #86881 to be
closed.

With regards to #21440 and #31399, I've filed some man pages upstream
(bugzilla at xprint.mozdev.org). Let me know if you want them. We'd have
to think about how to handle a man page simultaneously between xprt and
xprt-xprintorg. Putting it into xprt-common would solve the conflict, of
course, but I'm not sure it's where we'd be supposed to put it.

I've experienced the same problem on my i810 laptop. Let me know if

In that case I suggest trying the "vesa" driver, or upgrading to Debian
"testing", which contains XFree86 4.2.1, which contains support for
several varities of Trio64 chips.

http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.1/Status28.html#28

Alternatively, you can continue to use the xserver-s3 or xserver-svga
packages from XFree86 3.3.6 (whichever works better for you), which are
still available for the i386 architecture.

I just made do with using i386. I've now given my Diamond Stealth64
Video, cool as it was, away, because I have an AGP Radeon 9000. I'm
planning to start using a.out soon, and my sundial's due any week now!

I've been using http://hanzubon.org/ packages, but that site is login
protected atm *bummer* (http://hanzubon.org/Linux/Debian/HANZUBON/).

regards, koenraad.
