Help needded: moving search.debian.org
Hi, we recently talked about moving search.d.o away from senfl.debian.org, as this machine is going to be decomissioned. I moved www-master (aka wolkenstein) to man-da 2 days ago and got no error reports, so I assume that the move went okay. Can DSA now get help from the www team with moving search.d.o to wolkenstein. release-notes rebuild needed every 4h?
Hiho, i was looking into build times of cron.often of our website today (due to the sad news that we needed to spread today) and found out, that we are currently building the release-notes every 4h. This takes a huge time of the build process. 462 different versions. that sounds a bit crazy. (14 languages, 11 archs, 3 versions: txt, pdf, html) While i agree that a rebuild every 4h is needed like 3 days before the release, I object that this is need the rest of the time. Can we change that rebuild to once or twice a week, please? Changes to the release-notes are not that often. Re: Debian i18n sprint "towards i18n.debian.org" - new status
Hi Christian, can you specifiy for which exact tasks you need DSA on-site? Is this just for consultation or will the DSA on-site have work to do for two days? I looked into travel expenses for me (i can't promise yet if i will come at all), this would be around 170-250 EUR, depending day and way of travel. I just would like to avoid traveling to Paris if my real work load on i18n stuff for that weekend is only 3-6h while you guys meet 3d Then I would rather stay at home and online, with dedicated time for this sprint. (Paris is a nice city and I would love to visit Palais du Louvre, but i fear Leader will not pay my travel expenses for sightseeing in Paris). playing a bit with CSS
Hi, Victor Nițu and me had a bit too much time the last night, so we started playing with CSS on our main page. I tried to move the menu (hometoc) into a JS-less CSS menu. You can see my results on: http://people.debian.org/~zobel/foo/ Victor put his results on http://www.debian.org.ro/uploads/victor/d-o/ I think this layout proposal is far away from being perfect, but maybe we can start discussing a bit about changes in layout again, without breaking too much. Feedback (and patches) welcome. One problem i see is that the top menu might become a bit too crowed, so we might want to think about consolidating menu items. > There is no sync mechanism between the website CSS and that of the > wiki or other sites using the Debian theme so if we are changing the > CSS we should solve this issue first in my opinion. Paul, this was only a PoC. At least I have not yet thought about any integration other debian web pages. Yes, we should think about it, but really on this early stage? In my opinion we should work out other changes we want to see. He some of my upcoming ideas for the start page: * Make the page less 'static'. What do i mean with that? I would like to see more content changes on the start page, to make it more attractive to visit it. We could for exaple have some sort of 'featured article', where you could read the first two or three paragraphs. Other idea is also to include upcoming events into the start page. * I like the idea of the grid system of the Twitter bootstrap layout[1]. Maybe we could use some sort of that to group our content together on the start page. If you look at other OSS websites like [2] or [3], it works perfectly there, even without using bootstrap CSS. Those who frequently update from security.debian.org won't have to update many packages and most updates from security.debian.org are included in this update. Please note that this update does not produce a new version of Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 but only adds a few updated packages to it. There is no need to throw away 3.1 CDs but only to update against ftp.debian.org after an installation, in order to incorporate those late changes. distrib/index.wml
Hi, while digging through old www.d.o bugs in the bts i found the following text in english/distrib/index.wml: Buy a set of CDs or DVDs from one of the vendors selling Debian CDs and install from it. [...] Here are the basic advantages of CDs prepared by someone else: * Installation from a CD set is more straightforward. * You can install on machines without an Internet connection. * You can install Debian (on as many machines as you like) without downloading all packages yourself. * The CD can be used to more easily rescue a damaged Debian system. ERR, WHAT? Sorry, but i don't get those reasons. Can we please reword that? #504738 suggests to just drop "prepared by someone else" but i would say it needs more than that. Any suggestions? I worked on the mhonarc code tonight, and it looks it was much less to hack than i expected. I need to admit, i didn't check against any html-validator, but that can be done later. You guys would do me a big favour, if we could please NOT reset the "pre" element in CSS. I have some more general question: * Where is the "logo link" supposed to be pointing to? For git.deb.at and dsa.debian.org they are currently pointing to the current subdomain, while i would expect others would find it better to link to www.debian.org * How are "visited links" supposed to look like? At git.deb.at we currently have a mix of both, unchanged color and changed color, depending on whether you are in the footer or somewhere in the content/breadcrumbs * IMHO we should define one fontsize as our standard. Font size currently differs quite heavy between dsa.d.o and git.deb.at. Some (more technical) ideas regarding the KallesDesign
Hi, as you might have noticed, I am working on integrating KalleDesign into debian.org sites for some time now, and trying to convince others to do so as well. I think/hope we will reach the 'break-even' where the website team does not need to do all the work quite soon. Also I would like to share some concerns and ideas a friend of me brought up and which might help others to convert their sub-page to KallesDesign. * The id and class names of the global debian CSS have quite common names, which might be accidently overwritten by others. Therefore we should think about renaming those to more uniq names eg. by prepending something like 'debianci-' ("footermap" -> "debianci-footermap"). * Strip down debian.css to only the essential parts, and maybe have a debian-common.css, which provides the most common id and class names. While we are at this, rewrite them to more meaningful names and provide an understandable documentation... Will everyone of us know what #outer is going to do? * Have a technical howto that provides information about the (html) structure of a generic page. http://kalleswork.net/projects/debian/ has nice pictures, but does not provide the HTML code behind that. This howto should also document the usage of id tags. * Provide a set of color codes that mostly match to each other, which we recommend to use (note the 'recommend'). * Provide templates and sniplets which are usable for the huge number of debian subpages using different engines for rendering (ikiwiki, gitweb, moinmoin come in mind). The footermap or the toplevel navigation is a good example for that. Rhonda is already doing that for most parts, thanks for that help! I want to advocate Kalle Söderman as non-packaging Debian Developer. He is one of the driving persons behind the new Debian Website layout. He contributed a lot to the Debian WWW mailing list in the past. He is open to criticism and listens to all the new ideas the website team has. He plans to work further on the website and having access to the various project machines would make his life much more easy to help other teams inside Debian to incorporate the new design. Bug#608172: releases/testing/ should mention where to find the source of the release notes
Package: www.debian.org Severity: wishlist Hi, the page releases/testing/ currently does not mention where to find the source of the release notes. If you want to write patches for the release notes this is best done by sending patches to the existing source code of those. Thus mentioning where to find the source of the release notes might be a good idea. Can you ask comcast if the try to validate debian.org's DNS entries via DNSSEC and fail? BTW: these questions are more suitable for debian-u...@lists.debian.org or debian-ad...@lists.debian.org (the later one if you think it is a problem with the debian infrastructure). Bug#611735: www.debian.org: Add helper button on footer for design-flaws
Package: www.debian.org Severity: wishlist Hi, with the new website design coming up, we might break some pages quite hard. Thus i would like to suggest to have a button on the footer of each page with says something like "Found problem with the layout of this page, click here". Not sure yet what to do with this button, my idea would be to just mail this to a specified address, and have someone watching the incoming mail flood. Other idea would be to write a flat file somewhere. Nevertheless, i think we will need the following information: * Remote IP (yes, we want that, so we can find out if it might be a problem with the www-mirror we use, you never know...) * page * date + time * User-Agent (it might be displaying problems with a specific UA). I would suggest to limit this to four weeks, we should ne able to find most of the fall-out of the redesign switch within that time frame.
