Re: Wiki is down

2025-03-21 Thread J
I am very sorry for the number of messages in a row, but now i tried it
with one particular VPN and it works.

I live in *Russia* and maybe the government is blocking something again...

Without *VPN* i can't access https://wiki.debian.org

*but i can access https://www.debian.org/ <https://www.debian.org/> and
http://wilder.debian.org/ <http://wilder.debian.org/> !*
VPN based in Netherlands doesn't help, but French one is OK.

Can it be something on your side? Any geographic restrictions?

Un-obfuscated email address listings

2005-04-12 Thread J. Grant
Hello,
I noticed that my email address was being listed un-obfuscated on a bug
report:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?pkg=liblivemedia-dev

I wonder if there is a reason not to mangle the email address a little
to avoid auto-scan spam bots collecting email addresses?

email address mangling is common convention on most websites nowadays in
my experience.

Kind regards

Re: Un-obfuscated email address listings

2005-04-17 Thread J. Grant
Hi MJ Ray,
The solution to multiple copies of the email address would be to mangle
it upon receipt of the bug, processing that input if you like, before it
is copied and multiplied. Is debbugs actively being developed and
extended? Do you think they would be interested to implement email
address mangling? I can submit a bug if they are are interested in
doing this.
Kind regards

Trouble with the archives

2002-03-31 Thread J Pryne

Hello,

I'm searchging for all messages in a particular thread I started in June of
last year:

The archive turns up nothing on either the words in the subject or my family
name. This seems odd to me; am I overlooking something?

This thread generated a vast amount of interest and I wanted to pursue it
further but was overcome with professional obligations. As I have more time
now, I'd like to dig up all the ideas that thread generated and resume
development of the idea. Could you please inform me of any means of
retrieving all messages akin to the following header:

Website not fully secure?

2014-09-01 Thread Michael J
To Whom it may concern,

When checking debian homepage, noticed that the page was not fully
secure (i.e. the padlock in address bar was yellow vs. being green [Page
includes resources that are not secure]). Possibly not an issue, but
concerned since every other time I had visited the page it was always green
to best of my knowledge. As an avid user of debian, I wanted to bring to
your attention. Most likely not a big issue, but could be a security breach?

Mike

Bug#314861: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-apt-get.en.html 3.8 /etc/apt/apt.conf doesn't exist

2005-06-18 Thread Henricus J. Holtman
Package: www.debian.org
Severity: minor

Most confusing. I was trying to look for this file, which presumably
had the line:

APT::Default-Release 'version";

with which I could reconfigure my apt. No such file exists, at the location
specified, or any other, in spite of what it says. I did get my problem
resolved
but your documentation should be adjusted to reflect reality.

Web help...SLUG!

1998-02-19 Thread Paul J Thompson
Debian-www,

As well as being a Debian freak, I am the founder/president of a local
Linux User Group I started at school here. It is called the Stillwater
Linux User Group (SLUG). :)

Anyways, to the point...we are working on our web pages. Two things I
would like to add that I see Debian doing very well are:

1. Automagic Mailing List Sub/Unsubcription page.
2. Automagic posting of the mailing lists in that pretty format.

The first is easy, just involves grabbing subscribe.pl (and cgi-lib.pl)
from master and configuring it to serve our needs. First off, I wanted to
ask permission to do this. Is it ok for me to grab it and use it?

Secondly, the mailing list posting thing. I would need someone who
understands how it works to explain it to me and show me where to find (on
master) the appropriate scripts or cron jobs or whatever it takes to get
it working. Does someone think they could "hook me up" with this second
idea?

Thanks in advance...and sorry to bug you guys on debian-www.

Web Page - Security Alerts section

2001-04-19 Thread Brian J. Erickson
Hello,

I was looking your web page in the section titled
'Security Alerts'.

I noticed that the dates don't make sense.
The most recently posted security updates
are dated March 15-March 19.
I assuming they should be April 15-19.
Because you an April 9th before March 15th,
which doesn't make any sense to me.
On Monday, the March 15-19 listing weren't,
the latest was April 9th, so these must have been
added recently.

[19 Mar 2001] DSA-049 cfingerd - remote printf format attack
[18 Mar 2001] DSA-048 samba - symlink attack
[16 Mar 2001] DSA-047 kernel - multiple security problems
[15 Mar 2001] DSA-046 exuberant-ctags - insecure temporary files
^^
[09 Apr 2001] DSA-045 ntpd - remote root exploit

[13 Mar 2001] DSA-044 mailx - buffer overflow

[09 Mar 2001] DSA-043 zope - remote exploit
[09 Mar 2001] DSA-042 gnuserv - buffer overflow, weak security
[09 Mar 2001] DSA-041 joe - local exploit
[09 Mar 2001] DSA-040 slrn - buffer overflow

I am kinda of a newbie with Linux, especially Debian Linux.
Is this a mistake or is there some other reason
this?

apt-file.

Actually I use a perl user agent which parses the result page, thus
this is very long and borring if many records are requested ("bin" for
example).

So I wonder if I can get the request prototype instead of using the
http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl cgi script.

Thank you very much for your help.

Well I would use the packages.debian.org to fetch data.

Now I found a better way downloading the Contents-.gz file.

You can find a working version of apt-file at:

Bandwidht Limiting, details...

2002-01-14 Thread Chris J. DiBona

So we did turn on bandwidth limiting, however it's for 1.5 mb/s which is
pretty decent. I have to apologize for not emailing you guys beforehand,
but I only found out myself on sunday. That said, it shouldn't be too bad,
as on average the community machines were taking up about that
before. Large downloads and mirroring will likely be slower though.

Update.

2002-01-14 Thread Chris J. DiBona
Due to some craziness, it turns out that we have set the cap at 8mb/s with
provisions for spiking, which is in line with old traffic.

Navigation on Debian.org

2002-05-02 Thread Georg J. Stach
< Message in English >

Hello,

I'm a German Debian user. My suggestion refers to the website
www.debian.org : I think it would be easier to navigate through this
website if we had a navigation menu (which is steadily shown) like the
way it is printed on the left hand site when entering the
www.debian.org.
Example: You enter debian.org and select "social contract". The
navigation menu disappears; the menu on the top is not really helpful
in this moment.

Yours,
Georg Stach

---

Hallo,

Ich komme aus Deutschland und benutze Debian. Meine Anregung bezieht
sich auf Eure Homepage www.debian.org. :
In diesem Moment
hilft mir das horizontale Menü aber auch nicht viel weiter.

Gruß

He did say "Russian." On xemacs-users-ru, which is dedicated to
Russian-language posts, about half the users use RFC-2047 encoded-words,
and the rest are split evenly between ASCII-only and 8-bit Cyrillic.
"Raw Cyrillic in headers" is used by some of the more sophisticated
users, too, surprisingly enough.

This is a fairly small sample (about 100 subscribers, 25 regular
posters). However, the Russian spam I've seen (isn't it funny how you
can identify spam even though you can't read the language it's written
in?) invariably fails either the addressee tests (implicit, too many),
the known spam software test, or the HTML-only test. So (FWIW) I've
disabled the 8-bit test and so far the Russian subscribers are happy.

I will also say I've seen a fair amount of dumbquotes from MS-encumbered
posters, and the occasional accented Latin character from French and
German posters (although those are quite rare, but not quite nonexistent).

Marco> /^Subject: .*[^[:print:]]{8}/ REJECT Your mailer is not \
Marco> RFC 2047 compliant

If you're going to do that, 8 is probably too many (SPC is not an
8-bit character---I find 3 works well) and the reason should be
failure to comply with RFC 2822. AFAIK 2047 does not prohibit 8-bit
characters, it simply provides a mechanism to encode them in
environments where they are prohibited.

Re: An open letter to the open source community about the security of open source pr

2003-12-12 Thread Robert J. Chassell
I think that you have missed the point. I don't believe that the
intention of the discussion was to size-off the merits of Open Source
   and Free Software.

I doubt that RMS is considering intentions, but is looking at facts.

In current use, the term `open source' conflates at least two
different actions. One action is the release of code under the GNU
General Public License. Another action, which I myself have seen
referred to as `open source', is the permission Microsoft gave to
officials from the government of mainland China to study, but not
copy, change, or redistribute, its Microsoft Windows source code.

In a different case, about which I have also read, some developers
worked on a Java project that Sun said, ahead of time, was open source
but not free -- and the developers were suprised when Sun turned out
to mean exactly what it had said: the developers were giving their
work gratis to Sun for the corporation to restrict.

You may think the intent of the phrase `open source' is only to refer
to software that you and others may run, copy, study, change, and
redistribute. Unfortunately, other people do not always intend that.

A similar problem occurs when people (using the English language)
understand `free software' to be `free' in the sense of gratis, rather
than free in the sense of `free speech', `free markets', or `the free
world'. However, enough people are sensitive to this problem that you
often seen people referring to `free as in free speech, not free
beer'. The goal is to avoid confusion.

Rather, my reading of the message was that it proposed
that different projects work together to offer greater protection
   against security threats.

That is your reading. It certainly is not the reading of others who
also use the phrase `open source'.

Had the author wanted to use the phrase `open source' in a manner that
avoided confusion, he could have used the phrase `free, libre, and
open source' software (FLOSS), since that phrase has come to refer
only to open source that is free, not to open source that is
restricted. Like the appropriate response to two meanings of `free'
in English, this action avoids the confusion that can otherwise occur.

Dear webmasters and maintainers,
please apologize my disturbance, but I would like to ask you, why important
debian related messages are never shown on the homepages.

What I mean with "important messages" ?

Well, I think, if a debian server would have been compromised, this should be
appear at once on the webside. Also, when the main server is down, everyone
should be informed about the non-reachable server (like at the moment).
IMO , these informations belong to open source policy as well, don't you think
so ?

My intension is, just a wish to you, you might populate such important things
not only in blogs, but on the homepage as well. If I am wrong, just let me
know or forget this mail.

Thank you for your attention !

Yes, I saw this at that time on the side, but the announcement was real late

Hmm, maybe I am wrong, but as endusers might wonder, why there are suddenly no

I cannot reach the the servers ftp.de.debian.org (and I get errors with

This is only at "i386", the "amd64"-part is working fine.

Is anything known about this ? If yes, I I need not to search my system for

Is there a special reason for it, i.e. does linux-image-2.6.23-x-686 replace

No German language automatically shown on main site

2006-08-20 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Dear webmaster, I allow me to report of some issue:

The main Debian site is no more automatically shown in German language. My
environment is correctly configurated (at first I thought it was a problem
with my browser "konqueror") to German.

This is been proved, when I call "http://packages.debian.org/unstable/"; and
klick to the packagaes itself. In this section, the German language is shown
automatically.

So I suppose, the German command is not transferred correctly to my browser.
Could that be ?

Other multilanguage-sites (i.e. www.freebsd.org) are shown correctly.

What can I tell more, to help you ? I deleted the cache of konqueror with no
success.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards

Hans

I have done some work on X keyboards, I did the main stuff for da, sv, no fi
keyboards.

We could ensure that the characters needed are available easily on each
respecitve national keyboard. I am also involved in ISO keyboard standardisation
(SC35/WG1) and via that channel I got the info that the EU are asking for
a specific set of characters to be available for inputting for all public
service desks in the EU. I would like to look into that.

Also, I am involved in a new standard for describing keyboards. I would like
to have some machine parsable format, probably in XML, and then with conversion
tools to
X and others. Could somebody help me with writing such a standards spec?

yes! Do you have a complete or partial list of which

The Danish are definitely wrong.
I have never seen »text 1 >text2<«

I will see if I can find some correct documentation.

http://www.dkuug.dk/cultreg/registrations/narrative/da_DK,_4.3.html

says that "" and »« are used

Please correct for Danish

Preferred:

»text1 'text2'«

Alternate:

"text1 'text2'"

The source is Retskrivningsordbogen, 3rd edition 2001,
sections 64(1) and 64(4). Retskrivingsordbogen
is authoritive on Danish orthography.

No, alternative 2 is not correct, according to Retskrivningsordbogen,
(RO01) which is the autoritative source on Danish ortography.
It is even prescribed by law that this book must be
followed in schools and by all public servants.

RO01 section 64(1) says (my translation):
There are the following two main forms: »...« and "...";
less used are the single (nondoubled) citation marks
>...< or '...' (see 64(4). The form of the citation marks are
primarily a typographical question. It is thus not important
if the quotation marks are double or single (cf 64(4)),
if they are placed high or low, or if they turn upwards
or downwards. The main rule is that they have a form that
distinctively separates them from other characters in the
text, and that you also use the same type of citation marks
in the whole text.

My notes on the typography in the RO01:

" is clearly the machine type quotation mark U0022
' is clearly U0027, I looked closely at those two
« is U00AB
» is U00BB
< is not U003C - but the other one
> is not U003E - but the other one

My remarks on using this in the traslations:
I am part of the overall team for translating to Danish,
this includes GNU, Gnome, KDE, Debian, Redhat/Fedora, Mandriva and Suse
translations, and we use the quotation signs recommended above.
We do try very hard to follow RO01, as this is prescribed
to be followed in schools and in public administration.

keld

Re: Quotation marks - commit planned for language css in webwml

2005-12-22 Thread Keld J|rn Simonsen
I had one more look at the quotes page
http://www.witch.westfalen.de/csstest/quotes/quotes.html

what is the intention with alternative 1 and alternative 2?
What is the difference in use?
Eg for locales we have a short date and a long date version
with the distinction on the length. What is the difference here?
This would help html page authors on whether to use the one or the other.
The difference should be explained in the "quotes" page.

I woill suggest for "No language" to use:
This is a "single Quote". This is an "outer Quote containing an 'inner quote'".
That use ' inside of quotes. or is there a good reason not to distinquish?

I note in English you would normally write:
This is a "single Quote". This is an "outer Quote containing an 'inner quote.'"
Note that the full stop is within the quotes. The logic beats me, but that is
how they
normally do it.

I do like the distinction "Normal/American" for English, while
it probably should be "Normal/US" - as in some parts of the Americas, namely
Canada, they probably use the normal English notation.

change corrent -> current in the top of the page.

I looked in a number of books on my bookshelves for clues on
Danish use. The most common seemed to be »«. then some used
some forms of "" with goose eyes, and some used ,, '' with
goose eyes. A remarkably high number did not use any markings.
The last group (except »«) was about evenly spread.

Coming then back to what to chose for Danish, I see that
the quotes page says that some of these quote marks do not work
in some browsers. Given that the Danish translation team uses
some form of "''" and »« and that is what is recommended by
retskrivningsordbogen
and available in probably all browsers. I would recommend using that
for our page. I would recommend (dependent on the intention of use for
alt1 and alt2) that the most common be "''" in typewriter mode, as this
is what is most common for Open Source translations, and in HTML pages.

Debian Installation ISO DVD Image Files

2006-05-31 Thread Robert J. A. Fernandes.

Dear Sir,

I have downloaded DVD ISO Images files from this below
location: -

http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/3.1_r2/i386/iso-dvd/

in this section the file size its shows
4.4G for debian-31r2-i386-binary-1, but when I am downloading it give me 372MB
and for the another file debian-31r2-i386-binary-2 it shows 4.1G but when I
downloads it gives me 127MB.

So is this file ok or has to be correct 4
GB? I have doubt just because of this sizes. And is it according to above
MB’s then even I can burn on normal 700MB CD’s right? So
what’s the meaning of DVD ISO Files? I didn’t get?

Please help me.

Regards,

Robert

Hi Mihira,

Thank you very much for your email.

But my problem is when I download the DVD ISO Files it showing me only
372 MB for 1st ISO and 2nd ISO it's showing me 127MB is this right size.
That's what I want to confirm with you.

IS that the same size of the both ISO files what I have downloaded, even
I tried 2-3 times again & again it's the same size & I think no problem
in my internet downloads, its even fast download.

I think I should burn these ISO files on DVD's then I should try &
install right?

Eagerly waiting for your reply.

Robert

Better check your internet connection. Most likely yor downloading timed

out and left you with a partial download. Use the check sum given in the

site to see if you have the complete file.

Wrong. You cannot burn a DVD image on a CD. it wont work.

So what's the meaning of DVD ISO Files? I

These are image files of the DVD. you create a DVD using this ISO file.

the site provides Checksums for all the ISOs it hass. Please use those
check sums against the checksums of the files you have downloaded.
IF the checksums are the same then you can use the downloaded file.
However, since you say your file is mere 372 MB when it should be 4.4
GIGs, I highly doubt that you have the full iso.

what is the speed of your net connection ? What is your Download agent ?

if its Internet Explorer then I'm pretty sure you have a corrupt

withiut verifying the checksums, do NOT burn the ISOs as you're likely

Thank you once again for your instant reply.

Well I would like to have both things as file access and

My Initiative is to keep this Debian Server for Apache HTTP, MySql

settings/installation instructions or just an normal installation?

what do you mean by connecting to 2003 server ? for authentication or
for file access ? Authentication via MS server is not simple as you have

to setup LDAP authentication to work with your 2003 DC.
file access is quite possible and relatively easy. All you need is the
Samba Client installed in the debian PC. If you installed KDE or Gnome,
then you probably already have a samba client as both those desktop
managers have a samba client by default.

Ah! well the standard practice for server is that it'll be console only
(no GUI). This is done when you install deb as its asks what type of
installation you want : Desktop, server or custom.
What that does is to preselect packages to install. Like Gnome desktop
with open office if you select Desktop and Apache and PostgreSql if you
select Server.
There's no fine tuning needed as it works as a server out of the box.All

you have to do is to install the service that you need like Apache,
MySQL, Samba Server etc. and install only the stuff you need.

Like I said, you don't need any fine tuning by default unless you're
planning to have an unusual setup.
