kernel panic
debs, in one of my dual-boot deskboxes, i have a kernel panic: unable to load NLS charset cp 437 kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:03 my potato on custom kernel 2.2.17 was functioning well until yesterday. i don't mind a re-install, but i'd really like to know what's going on, as this happens like every couple of months to one of my machines. (i know i have a line-wrap problem w/ vi. when i get some time to learn how to fix it, i'll be very happy. until then, my apologies.) anyway, when i use the rescue disk and mount a partition, i only get the choices of /dev/hda1 (wincrap) /dev/hda3 and /dev/hda4. i'm sure i had /dev/hda2 (linux) and /dev/hda5 (swap). and when i try to mount /dev/hda3-hda4, i get, "invalid argument." i think i'm screwed; but if anyone has suggestions, please cc me. ia, t. bentley taylor. //

(i still have the free version of wp8, but i just don't seem to use it unless i absolutely have to.) i think my being weaned from wp(8) (in this case) comes from wanting to have documents that are not left in propriatary "fugliness." true, one can save wp8's in ascii/dos text, but one loses the formatting, which, aside from big fonts for address lables, etc., is the only reason i'd use it. so, i trade the easy, beautiful formatting (of wp) for a format that doesn't leave me playing "codependent" games, which speaks to the bigger issue as to my choice of an os. (...well, "stability" has something to do with it, too, but i shan't get carried away) another benefit for me is that i'm not relying on wp8 for an easy "fix." it makes me focus more on _content_ rather than on "glitz," an attractive nuisance, like stinking meat to a dog. further, i've been seduced by, my "clean" (icon-less) desktop with sweet backgrounds and "see- through" consoles. i, therefore try not to use apps that "interfere" with such beauty. lastly, no one at work or through work has any prob with my vi "solution." "in-house" docs or appellate briefs are tendered with equal aplomb. (...so, i'm not a mathematician..., or i'd probably be espousing, um...latex?) i'm not saying wp(8) can't be the right "tool," but for me, i just don't need it as much as i used to, philosophically or otherwise.. b. // --- End Message ---

Re: dual boot win2k and debian
IMHO, the setup command should be grub> setup (hd0) Then the grub stage1 file is located in the MBR of your hard disk. (hd0,0) stands for the partition /dev/hda1, which is in your case the NTFS partition. The command setup (hd0,0) will install grub in the "MBR" of /dev/hda1, instead of /dev/hda. That's the reason why your W2K was destroyed. Fortunately, you have command fixboot and fixmbr. Hi, it's really due to pam_wheel for su. I added root to group wheel then "sudo su" works perfectly. I previously also used pam_rootok, which is however, beyond pam_wheel. The pam_wheel has requisite control flag. So pam_rootok will not be executed if root is not in the group wheel. Thank you. mkdosfs: strange?
Hi, all, There is a very strange thing about mkdosfs. I have a 80GB WD hard disk. At the end of this disk I created a Win95 FAT32 partition for Windos 98. I used mkdosfs -f 32 /dev/hdc6 to format it. Under both win98 and Linux I can read and write on hdc6. But for Linux, ls only list the files created under Linux. Under Win98, only files created under win98 are visible. You can hardly restore the boot sectors for Win98 in hda1 and for WinXP in hdb1. Perhaps it's possible to configure the WinXP/98 boot loader to boot Win98 directly without interruption. I think there is a config file somewhere. Then reinstall WinXP and tell it not to mess up with Win98. After that you will get a nice lilo menu. CDRDAO -- can it record iso files?
Hi, Is it possible to use CDRDAO to record a directory from a hard disk to a CD-R? Of course, mkisofs can make a iso file for that directory. But I don't know if CDRDAO supports recording iso files. My Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-308B doesn't work with CDRECORD, but CDRDAO. So it's important to know the capability of CDRDAO. Thanks in advance. exim not sending mail
Hi, I'm trying to config exim|procmail|mutt with a DSL connection to the internet, single workstation. I've managed to setup so I can receive mail ok (to [EMAIL PROTECTED]), and send internally but can't send externally, exim just queues the mail and logs with error: 2001-08-09 12:08:02 [EMAIL PROTECTED] T=remote_smtp defer (-44): retry time not reached for any host I ran eximconfig choosing 'Smarthost' and the defaults. The only thing that I can think of is an authentication problem, I haven't entered username/password anywhere, and there is no /etc/exim/password file. I don't know how or where to enter this info anyway. I tried the exim manual but it's painfully apparent that I have no clue :-( I'd be really grateful for some advice! patrick. __ Do You Yahoo!? best practice for tar and gzip?
Hi, I have a lot of important archives, up to 10,000 files per ~10 Meg tar.gz tarball, that I like to keep as safe as possible. I test the archives when I create them, have backups, and off-site backups of backups, but I am worried about possible file corruption, ie propagating possibly corrupt files through the backup rotation. Would it not be better to compress the files individually first and then tar them into an archive instead of the normal tar.gz operation, to have the best chance of recovering as many files as possible? thx, patrick. __ Do You Yahoo!? cd reading tip (2.4.3 )
I was trying to read one of my cdrom archives on a 2.4.3 machine with a cheap-ass generic ide/ATAPI cdrom drive, but all it could read was the lost+found directory... I could read the cd with other drives, so it wasn't a coaster. On a whim, I tried loading the scsi emulation drivers scsi_mod.o, sg.o, ide-cd.o and mounted the drive as /dev/scd0 and could now read the disk just fine! So it looks like it is enough to just call an ide-drive a scsi drive to make it more reliable :-) patrick. __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Installation Trouble
hi, i just purchased the "Debian Linux Unleashed" by SAMS publishing, and it came with a copy of Debian GNU/Linux 2.2r2. it booted off the CD and was fine until i saw an error message that says "Keyboard = AT Keyboard not present?" something like that anyway. then more gibberish very quickly, and the screen changes to one with color and a DOS-like window talking abt the introduction to Debian. The word "Continue" is highlighted in the center of the window near the bottom. problem is, my keyboard and mouse doesn't seem to work. i couldn't hit enter to go on to the next screen, nor could i use the mouse to click on the "Continue" button. my keyboard is a PS/2 keyboard, and i've read the installation docs. it didn't talk abt the keyboard type at the boot prompt. the closest i read was "bootkbd=qwerty/us" which didn't work when i tried. Specs for my box are as follows: Processor: Intel Celeron 900MHz Motherboard: Asus TUA266 Memory: 256MB DDR Harddisk: 30GB HDD Graphics: Abit GeForce2 MX400 64MB Sound: Creative Soundblaster Live NIC: 3Com 3C905B-TX please help. jem _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". No. that was me at work (i.e. lacking detail) I solved it in that thread, never previously realizing that the shell (I have some LSL install CD-ROM of 2.2.16) I needed was after you start the installation procedure. It's still odd to me, though. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I still have the two good kernels I compiled on the machine, but until I ran e2fsck all over, they wouldn't boot, either. I suppose attempting to boot the bad kernel (which didn't have support compiled in to read hard drives, donut!) actually hosed the hard drive, and thus prevented even the good kernels from working. Now I have a nice CD-R backup. It'd be slick to make my own 2.4.18 boot CD ciao for now - They're There! They're Poor! Thanks for the reply... I believe that I am using the latest version of libc6, so I guess it is still broken. Re: Re: How to disable this PPP message
Hi Simo, Thanks for the pointer. I'm using Firestarter to configure IPTables. I will investigate Firestarter configuration options. Cheers, jec -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Re: How to disable this PPP message
Hi, Here is what I did. Please note: this is probably not appropriate for a professional/production/multi-user system. I run Debian as software development platform w/ Firestarter to manage IPTables. Firestarter causes IPTables to log messages related to various DoS attacks.attacks.attacks.attacks.attacks.attacks.. It then instructs IPTables to disable traffic from the associated IP address. So, it's not entirely appropriate to disable logging entirely. IPTables logging is controlled by Firestarter in the /etc/firestarter/configuration file. The shell variable "LOG_LEVEL" is transmitted to IPTables; which level is then used as the SYSLOG message level. -> LOG_LEVEL=debug Modify /etc/syslog.conf to log kern.debug messages to /dev/null on the theory that important messages shouldn't be written at debug level. If I really need to be seeing these messages, I'll probably be disconnected from the net. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it -> kern.debug -/dev/null However, I obviously do not want to discard /all/ kernel messages -> kern.info -/var/log/syslog I still think this is rather ham-handed. The difficulty (IMNSHO) stems from the lack of granularity below the facility level. In other words, I can't (AFAIK) specifically log kern.iptables to its own file. where is `gc.h' needed for compiling gcc?
I'm trying to compile gcc on Potato with the pgcc patches. Patches applied cleanly, and I edited the debian/patches/ patches that didn't apply cleanly (just version changes between `gcc' and `pgcc') and ran debian/rules binary. Now in src/libobjc/gc.c, it can't find gc.h and gc_typed.h, which are not included with the gcc source. Where can I find them? -- Ferret no baka
SquidGuard without libdb2 in /usr/local?
I'm trying to build squidguard but am running into a little problem. It depends on libdb2, but the congigure script fails on Debian's libdb2 and libdb2-dev packages installed, saying the berkley DB package isn't installed. I'd like to build squidguard without having to have the packages under /usr/local like it suggests, but I'm not sure how. Even specifying the directories as configure options doesn't seem to be working. This is what I do: ---> ./squidGuard-1.1.2# ./configure --with-db-inc=/usr/include/db2/ --with-db-lib=/usr/lib/ loading cache ./config.cache checking for gcc... gcc checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... yes checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) is a cross-compiler... no checking whether we are using GNU C... yes checking whether gcc accepts -g... yes checking how to run the C preprocessor... gcc -E checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c checking for bison... bison -y checking for flex... flex checking for yywrap in -lfl... yes checking for lynx... /usr/bin/lynx checking for perl... /usr/bin/perl checking for db_version in -ldb... no ** The Berkley DB library is required for squidGuard to compile. Get it from http://www.sleepycat.com use --with-db=DIR or --with-db-lib=DIR to specify its location. (default is /usr/local/BerkeleyDB) <--- The only thing I can see is it probably is looking for `libdb.a', which is in libc6-dev, and it needs to use `libdb2.a' from libdb2-dev. I'm looking through the configure scripts, but It's hard reading for me and I'm not sure what or how to change. I'm hoping someone's successfully built this program and can tell me what I need to tweak for it. I've also looked at junkbuster. But I need a caching proxy more than I need a redirector. And I need to be able to redirect sets of addresses to sets of other addresses. For example, something like: http://*.domain.com/* --> http://otherdomain.com/foo *://[ad|ads|spam].*/*/*.[gif|jpg|png] -> localhost/blocked/banner.png etc.. junkbuster looked like it couldn't redirect to external sites like this, plus it's a proxy in its own right. Any other suggestions, perhaps? Thanks, -- Ferret no baka
