Kernel 2.2 on hamm?
I'd like to run a 2.2.x kernel on my hamm system. Does anyone know what problems will occur when doing this? Thanks, Stephan Hachinger.
Star office 5 fonts and speed
Hello! Sorry for this "non-debian" question, but maybe anyone knows how to solve my problem. I'm using StarOffice 5.1 on a slink (Kernel 2.2.9) system, and whenever I want to use a X11 xfstt font, I have to type its full name into the font selection listbox because these fonts don't appear in the list box. Thanks for any solutions to this problem. By the way, Star Office is awfully slow (about 1:30min startup on a P133). I use it because I don't know how to use X11 fonts in Corel WP and because of better compatibility to WORD. But the speed of it as well as the amount of disk space it uses (for what???) is terrible. I'm quite disappointed of it. Kind Regards, Stephan Hachinger

Possibly, you forgot to include some network drivers/ protocols needed by X11 (TCP/IP etc. I think) in the kernel. I just tried different protocols until it ran. If it can't mount the root fs, you forgot to include a driver for that fs in the kernel, I suppose. By the way, why are you willing to switch to 2.2.10??? You should clean up your hard disk-did it cause any errors when compiling the kernel? Kind Regards, Stephan Hachinger.

There are debian packages with kernel sources, which also should include descriptions about how to compile it. Hello! Again some criticism about your opinions... >Ok, ok, I sit corrected in several respects, but I am still adamant that any attempt to paint Linux as an out of the box solution >with no prior knowledge is a real danger to the on-going comercial success of Linux. I worked in tech-support for Xerox for about 7 >years (Xerox used to sell Apple Mac, IBM PS/2 and Dell in Latin America), and I would say that at least 70% of the problems we had >we with users who not only did not know what they were doing (no problems with that) but who did not WANT to know what they were >doing. If you fix the expectations as "zero cost, zero learning" >then you are NOT going to have a successful install. I am fairly competent with Debian, but the last time I looked at RedHat, I did >not want to do any real config changes until I had read the corresponding man pages and other documents, and these are both Linux >based > >In short. If you use a tool you have to know it. If you want to use a tool well you have to learn how it works. You don't get >something for nothing and you definitely don't want to tell your customers to expect the world for nothing. OK, I know what you mean. I've been using Debian for a short time and Windows for a quite long time now, and I worked together with many people on PC projects. I also think in a way that there are two extremes concerning PC users: There are some who want to dive deep into the secrets of the system, and others only want to use it for doing their work. And I (I belong to the first group) realized, whatever I worked on, that the second group of users also got very good results out of their work. Let's look on what the computer was invented for: Scientific calculations. But people had to have very good knowledge and time to use it. And what the computer can do now (at least sometimes): Help at work and calculate things without needing much time for administration any more. Although I like to administrate a system properly, IMHO it is very admirable that people can now work with computers almost with zero administration. And it makes life easier and makes the computer work for what it was created: Solving problems. So, IMHO, it is not good to think that people that can only work with GUI interfaces and "dumb" OSes are stupid or worth less. I think it's very understandable if someone wants to concentrate on his problems and not on his systems. Now, what do this thoughts end up to? I think there should be both kinds of OSes: The "just use and..." ones and the ones which require proper administration and can be tuned properly. Why should we let MS control the market of the "just use and ignore it" OSes? I there should be a Linux for EVERY person, and distributions like the coming Corel-Linux, which are almost completely GUI-based, will improve the success of Linux. But "Linuxes" also have to be tweakable. I think that's why there are different distros: That different users can reach different aims. Admins who want to tune it thorougly as well as home users who want to use it without reading any manual, just to show to extremes. That's what Linux should be, I think. And if Debian should become easier to install or something like that, there should be discussions about how the future Debian can solve problems in a better way than last versions. But there should not be a flame war about UNIX philosophy because it's no use starting such a war. Time and users will tell where to go finally and which philosophies are right. Why can't there be just peaceful coexistence between different users and philosophies??? And: About the last paragraph: I think good software can be used without knowing any manual. It has some help functions that quickly guide to the required functions/params. You can see what command you must call. That's good software. I want to dive into internals of OSes. But, personally, I don't read manuals very often. And I succeeded with WIN and with Debian this way. So that philosophy can't be that bad. That was my opinion about this. I already have used WIN and LINUX, and DOS, and the GEM UI, and DR DOS, and CALDERA DOS, and so on. Intolerance brings no solution. Did not want to offend anyone:). Kind Regards, Stephan Hachinger

Serial connection to windoze box
Hello! I'd like to connect my slink box to my W95 machine over a serial cable. If anyone knows a more or less comfortable way to do this, please let me know. Best solution was of course some network emulation, but I think this isn't possible. Kind Regards, and thanks for any reply, Stephan Hachinger from Munich, Germany -- Sent through Global Message Exchange - http://www.gmx.net
Re: Serial connection to windoze box
Hello! I've now got the inf file, and I'm trying to use the dial-up-networking (German: short: DFUE) to get a PPP connection over the serial line. Now, although I've read some chapters of the PPP FAQ, I've got some problems (don't know which one is the cause of that it doesn't work) First of all, what protocol would you suggest? TCP/IP or IPX? Secondly, how can I get the DFUE to send the username and password to the Linux box correctly? And, how can I configure the TCP/IP adresses of the Linux box (tried pppd (...) home:remote) and what PPPD options are important furthermore? I know, these all are "RTM"-questions, sorry, but please send me only some important tips, or links to the right howto places, if anyone knows about this issue. Re: Serial connection to windoze box
Hello! Thanks very much for your reply. Here's the inf. It installs like a modem, so you really have to make and start a DFUE conection. There is some kind of (ppp?) communication if I start pppd (with options crtscts, home:remote ip, detach (what does that mean??-I've got it from the howtos), /dev/ttyS1) and the DFUE, but there is no successful connect. What, BTW, are the files which determine the ip adress and netmask for the Linux box? Or is the value I give to pppd sufficient? Another thing: The following command is supposed to work with Slackware (from the inf homepage): >>Windows 95 -> Linux This is probably the second most problematic connection. I have less experience with this. I have only connected my copy of Linux up to the CBX, but I have not tried a Win95 -> Lunix connection. Again, I have heard of people performing this connection, but I do not have any advice! Please see the technical description of the file for some hints on getting started. Supposedly, it works fine with Slackware using the following inittab entry to log into the first serial port: s1:45:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 ttyS0 network This same entry does not work at all with Debian Linux, however. With the Slackware linux distribution, there is an entry called network which tells agetty that what it sees is what it gets, pass everything straight through and don't try to translate ANYTHING (no special screen formatting characters), so the network keyword in the above statement is essential<< Can you please tell me what this command does, how to set the IP adress with it, and if such a thing works with debian some way?? That was a good start to a solution, I think. Hello! Sorry for not replying for a so long time. I'll to get a network adapter soon, so that the problem will be solved. Thanks very much for your suggestion, I'll try it as it sounds quite easy and I'm no linux (network) expert. I'm also talking about the net emulation with Phil, but I think, it won't be very easy... Re: Serial connection to windoze box
Hello! Here I am again after a long, long time in a galaxy far, far away... Sorry for not replying so long, but I was terribly busy all the time. And thanks for all your work on this issue!! > After reading the .inf (it's in plain text, and commented :)), you don't > use a PPP connection - you use SLIP. It's and older and less flexible > than PPP, but it works rather well. I think I can switch the connection type in the DFUE configuration between PPP, SLIP and others. I think it can handle PPP, as also explained on the homepage of the author. > I'll see if I can get a hold of a Win95 system and play around with this > some later in the week, if you can wait that long. Yeah, that would be very great, but really don't spend hours trying this configuration. I will get a network card from a friend for free in a time, he said to me yesterday. And so the problem will probably be solved. BTW, I think this kermit also needs a PPP or similar connection running (->help files...)?? I don't know how to configure it to work on a serial line without any protocols. What do you think of Paul's suggestion to use minicom and on the win side teraterm PRO to transfer files? I'll try it out because he says it works at his PCs. Now, the net-emulation issue. The problem I seem to have is that I really don't know how to make the linux box react on the signals (which I don't know, too) the W95 dial-up sends over the serial line. Apart from this issue, which seems to be critical for such connections, I will read some magazines about linux networking, I think, because this "try and succeed" way won't work under linux, although I already have some idea about how it works. And, I don't know how to use ifconfig which wants me to specify a network adapter (and I don't know how to handle this serial-emulation device and which name it has). Perhaps it'll become clear but, as I said, don't work too much on this issue, only if it you're interested in it, 'cause I'll get a network card sooner or later. Kind Regards, Stephan Hachinger

Serial conn. to WIN (success with slip!):next steps
Hello!!! Forget about all recent mails from me: I have succeeded now making a slip connection!!! Yes, I only had no getty running for the ttyS1 port, and now all seems fine. I'm using diplogini over the windows dialup terminal, which tells me the IP addr. is 172.17.0.0. I think I configured Linux to have 172.16.0.0. Now, I have the next problem: From the linux box, I can ping both adresses (172.17.0.0 and 172.16.0.0) successfully. But from the win box, I cannot ping the Linux box. Don't really know why. The ifconfig shows me the slip config with "inet addr:172.16.0.0 P-t-P:172.17.0.0". What does this mean and what can I be doing from? I think, WIN simply wants to know the route to the Linux box. Well' I'll try. If you've got some suggestions about this issue, please send me a mail. Thanks for all the help, Kind Regards, Stephan Hachinger

samba problems (was: Re: Serial conn. to WIN (success!) - thanks)
Hello! Now, the further problems: I hope perhaps someone can send me some suggestions about this 'cause I have read the smb.conf manpage thoroughly and don't know what to do (although I said I was probably able to solve this). I'm using a ip connection over slip (serial cable direct) from a WIN 95b box to slink. I can also mount my win services (smbmount), no problem. And I can use the samba supplied services on the win box. But, the problem is that win doesn't find any computer in the Network Neighbourhood and claims it can't be browsed. If I Run >>//computername/resource" in win, I can see the resource, and then, if I press the "change to upper dir" button (don't know what it's called in English WIN vers), I get, after some time connected, the workgroup in the window, and then, after a second click I reach the network neighbourhood and then --- the computername is shown CORRECTLY!!! I really don't know what causes this behaviour, and so I'm sending you the smb.conf as well as the dialup.dun file with this mail. I'm using Samba 2.0.5 or so. Sometimes it also says that the groupname "workgroup" cannot be found, although I've configured both boxes to be in that group. samba problems - more infos - please help
Hello! I've got some more infos now... I'm loggin in to the linux box over ttyS1 (getty in inittab with options -L /dev/ttyS1 115200 network) with the windows dialup. The dialup networking uses a "modem emulation" inf (see attachment) for the serial line. Now, the problem seems to be that the workgroup doesn't appear. I can get to all other net places (see below) but not to the workgroup in the network neighbourhood. But, if I rerun smbd -D and nmbd -D, and then logoff at the win box and log back on (I'm using diplogini), there is a very good chance that I see the workgroup properly than. That were only the results from some experiments. Maybe this helps finding my configuration problem. Problems with SB 64 AWE
Hello! I've got a problem setting up a SB Awe 64 under Linux (kernel 2.2.5). I've compiled the following support into it: Sound Blaster (SB, SBPro, SB16, clones) support (CONFIG_SB) [Y/n/?] Generic OPL2/OPL3 FM synthesizer support (CONFIG_ADLIB) [Y/n/?] /dev/dsp and /dev/audio support (CONFIG_AUDIO) [Y/n/?] MIDI interface support (CONFIG_MIDI) [Y/n/?] FM synthesizer (YM3812/OPL-3) support (CONFIG_YM3812) [Y/n/?] lowlevel sound driver support [Y/n/?] AWE32 support (CONFIG_AWE32_SYNTH) [Y/n/?] (according to the AWE mini howto) and Plug and Play support. I determined the IRQ etc. by looking up the resources in the WIN 95 device manager. But the kernel does not recognize any SB or AWE device. Perhaps I've determined the resources wrongly, but how to get the resource data? It's all ISA plug and pray, and the bios doesn't list much. Maybe someone has already experience with this. Thanks for any help. Kind Regards, Stephan Hachiger

Network config problems - please help
Hello! I've got problems setting up my network card (Etherlink III 509b) on my slink box, running a self-compiled 2.2.12 kernel. The network tools in netbase are recompiled potato ones. When booting, I get the messages (from which program???): SIOCADDART: Invalid argument SIOCSIFADDR: Operation not supported by device slip: unknown interface: Operation not supported by device SIOCSIFNETMASK: Operation not supported by device SIOCSIFBRDADDR: Operation not supported by device slip: unknown interface: Operation not supported by device SIOCADDART: Invalid argument (funny; I have not compiled slip support and don't need it - which setup is wrong here???) The ethernet card is, as the kernel and isapnp display, correctly configured. But, when I try ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.5, I get: SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource temporarily unavailable. Can someone please give me some hints about it? Thanks, Kind Regards, Stephan Hachinger
Re: Network config problems - please help
Hello! I've finally solved it! - The error messages by commenting some entries in the network script, - The card problem by changing the BIOS! Yeah, I can't believe it myself, but I simply had not remembered that a non-pnp card was using IRQ9 and I had not told that to the bios which also gave IRQ9 to the net card. Now, all this is OK. Thanks for the help and Kind Regards from Germany, Stephan Hachinger

Hello! IMHO, encoding with more than 128 kbps makes sense. I use bladeenc, which offers much better sound quality at 160 or 256 kbps. At 128, I can hear the blips clearly (maybe because of BladeEnc). Re: alsa help needed desperately!
Hi! Hmm, I think the problem is that your alsa channels are *muted* by default and you need a suitable mixer application to change the volume... there also seems to be a mixer setup problem at my machine here *g*, but at least I can use the kde mixer, when oss mixer emulation is loaded (module snd-mixer-oss). Maybe you could try alsamixer from alsa-utils, I think it's even got a little "GUI". Note that you'll also need the snd-pcm-oss module if you want to use programs which need the old oss sound system. Re: Printing via win 95
Hello! The way I did it is not very good if you want only deb-packages on your system, because I used a generic tar of apsfilter (->http://www.freebsd.org/~andreas/apsfilter/index.html). But it works very well. Apsfilter has an own setup program, it's very easy to set it up, because you almost only have to type in the server and share name and choose the print filter. It also prints input files of various types if you have the right tools installed (see apsfilter site). There is also a .deb of apsfilter, but last time I tried it, it was an older ver which did not support printing via smb. Re: Starting KDE2
Hi! Don't know if this has got anything to do with your problems, but on my machine, everything runs fine. I've got a potato distro; kde 1.93 and qt 2.2.0beta2 are compiled from source, I've compiled qt with the ./configure-switches mentioned in the kdelibs package, file "compiling". The only problem was that startkde was not really started by x, although it was the first line in my window-managers list, but after I created a symlink named /usr/bin/x-window-manager pointing to /usr/local/kde/bin/startkde, everything worked. Re: 3com 3c509 and the mouse
Hello! Looks like your linux system reconfigures the ethernet card and so WIN cannot find it at the original resources, I think. An easy solution: You could switch the 3c509 to non-pnp mode using the 3com utilities, assigning free resources to it and then do a hardware recogition (don't konw exactly how it's called in English version) in WIN (and configure isapnp to not set it up under Linux (this is the default, so you maybe have to change nothing and you can also try skipping this step)) and be sure that the 3c509 module recognizes the card properly. If it doesn't work, feel free to send mails. But the problem could also be another one: Your 3c509 is in non-pnp but jumperless mode, and the Linux driver reconfigures it so that windows cannot find it... seems more reasonable than the above for me!!! A switch to pnp mode could then fix it. So, this might be confusing, but I think I would try switching it to the mode it isn't currently in and see if the problem is fixed by this action. If you switch to non-pnp, obey the above. For seeing the mouse at the console, you must install the package gpm. Under X, I think, your mouse may be configured for the wrong port and you should fix it in xf86config or it is not plugged in properly or has a broken cable (like my one). If you experience problems (I think the above might be new or difficult for you), you can also mail me under [EMAIL PROTECTED], because I look through this mailbox more thoroughly. Re: 3c509 troubles
Hello! I've also got a 3c509b and it works fine. I switched on PnP mode in the DOS-based "3com utilites" setup program and then you don't really have to do anything complicated any more, because the bios automatically assigns irq/dma. Perhaps, there's just another pnp card using the interrupt of the 3com and this could be changed by switching the 3com to pnp. And: You've got to compile and install the kernel module for 3c509, it normally is able to autodetect irq, i/o etc.. For the irq etc... configuration, you could use isapnp, but it doesn't seem to be necessary for this card. I never used linux 3c...setup in my life. Re: printing to a windows printer
Hello! Don't know how to create the trash bin either (because I'm also quite new to Linux) but I suggest to you to use apsfilter instead of magicfilter. The newest versions have a *very* good setup script or program or whatever, you only have to insert the server and printer name and it will be ok... I only don't know if these new versions are already packaged into .debs, I'm using a generic tar.gz. Indeed, it seems to me like apsfilter was once installed on your system and the config is still from that time, but the apsfilter-scripts are missing. So, a reinstall and reconfigure of apsfilter should help. - Original Message - From: "David Erdman" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Philipp Lehman" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: Sent: Monday, October 02, 2000 4:47 PM Subject: Re: printing to a windows printer > sorry, i am pretty new in linuxi understand the lock part (i think), but > how would someone create a trash bin dedicated to lpd? > should I just comment the /dev/null out then? > > > > On Mon, 02 Oct 2000, Philipp Lehman wrote: > > On Sun, 1 Oct 2000, David Erdman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > >i have done this in suse, and redhat but am thus far unsuccessful. > > >I need to print to an HP722C (win printer) that is hooked up to windows 98 > > > on an internal lan. looking at logs > > > > > >Oct 1 19:31:11 ganymede pnm2ppa[1192]: No pages printed! > > >Oct 1 19:31:12 ganymede lpd[1195]: cannot execv > > >/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/ppa720-a4-auto-mono-300 > > >Oct 1 19:31:12 ganymede lpd[1194]: lp: job could not be printed > > >(cfA012ganymede) > > >Oct 1 19:31:24 ganymede lpd[1197]: cannot execv > > >/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/ppa720-a4-auto-mono-300 > > >Oct 1 19:31:24 ganymede lpd[1196]: lp: job could not be printed > > >(cfA010ganymede) > > >Oct 1 19:52:57 ganymede lpd[1347]: cannot execv > > >/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/ppa720-a4-auto-mono-300 > > >Oct 1 19:52:57 ganymede lpd[1346]: lp: job could not be printed > > >(cfA013ganymede) > > > > Your input filter script seems to be causing problems, printcap > > looks ok to me. > > > > >I configured with both printtool, and magicfilter. > > >i have also installed pn2pm (or whatever the hell it is) > > >my printcap is as follows > > >##PRINTTOOL3## SMB ppa 600x600 letter {} {HP DeskJet 720} ppa720b1 {} > > >lp:\ > > > > > > :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\ > > > :mx#0:\ > > > :sh:\ > > > :if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:\ > > > :af=/var/spool/lpd/lp/acct:\ > > > :lp=/dev/null: > > > > ^ > > > > Not recommended. Re: 3c509 troubles
Hello! Maybe, it could be a "normal" hardware resource conflict. But, why is the module loaded properly although the card has a conflict? I think, the card has a resource conflict, but the 3c509 module doesn't detect it. When ifconfig wants to configure the interface, it therefore cannot succeed. Hmm, as I said, the card works absolutely ok in pnp mode in my machine, but if you use jumperless, but non-pnp mode, you maybe have to assign the resources to this isa card in bios. In pnp mode, it could be possible that it has to be configured with isapnp (but not at my machine :)). Just write me some more about your hardware settings, maybe some interrupt and i/o listings from /proc and we'll see. Re: Debian 2.1 => Kernel problem
Hello! I for myself have got a debian2.2/2.1 mix on my machine, but it took a bit of time until I solved all the dependency problems. So I suggest using a debian 2.1 disk set for base install, then Sven would have no problems switching dselect to multi_cd mode and installing further packages from his slink cds. The boot disk would have to be modified to recognize the scsi adapter. Sven, can you access your hard drive when booting from the install cd? Or can't you even install? Tom Pfeifer wrote: > Someone can probably help you with that SCSI problem, but failing that, > there's no need to buy Debian 2.2 (potato). In fact you probably can't > yet anyway since it isn't quite released yet. I agree he there's no need of installing potato. Because I think you can't also tell if the required module is included in the kernel bundled with debian 2.2, I found the following possible solution: One of us compiles an appropriate kernel, uploads a ready-to-go rescue boot disk image and then Sven installs using this disk and a base install disks set. Then he could boot Linux using the rescue disk and install the kernel from the disk onto his hard drive, lilo (after configuring lilo.conf) and boot from his HDD, although the kernel-image package installed is not appropriate for his scsi hdd. It's just "overwritten" manually. This is my suggestion because I don't also care much about the kernel/kernel modules/kernel src packages, I just download a .tar.gz kernel and compile it and configure lilo manually (no make kpkg or so). But other people might regard this way as a bad one (what do you think??) Hello! XDM is the problem. I think the problem is, that other important X packages depend on the XDM package. So there is the possibility to delete the symlinks to xdm in the runlevel directories: /etc/rc(number from 0..6).d /etc/rcS.d Just look for any links named *xdm* in these dirs and remove the links (I would suggest to use MC to find and delete these links). After this action, the startup will lead to the console. Re: Is Debian the last OS ? (Long reply)
Hello! Adam is right, I think. The other distros have had the glibc 2.1 in their stable releases much earlier than debian, for example. So I had to install a potato base system about a half year ago (BTW, it runs fine although it was not even close to the first test cycle that time). But it is a very uncomfortable way to download packages over a modem 56k connection. And these connections (or the slightly faster 64k ISDN ones) are usual here in Germany. So I use a mix of packages from my Slink CD set which I bought and some new downloaded packages. However, you cannot tell any normal simple desktop user that he has to download packages to get a distro with recent packages. Or that he has to obey that some packages of slink cause problems when installing a 2.2. kernel. So, many people in Germany (or lets say, really all of my friends using linux) install SUSE with these absolutely wonderful yast and sax tools and a bunch of, I must confess, more actual packages from a CD set. If I want recent software, I compile it myself, so I always get the newest versions. But I must say, that a selection of recent deb packages installed is a more comfortable thing then a selection of self-compiled and installed source-code packages which I cannot uninstall any more. And so IMHO, this is a real disadvantage of debian, that it releases major updates not very often. So, after this issue, I wanna write how I came to use debian and why I'm convinced of it. It's my first distribution, and I really liked it from the beginning. Here in Germany, Debian always gets very bad marks in tests because the PC magazines write that, although it's very reliable it is so difficult to use. But I think that's not true. I first got hamm (and later slink) on two CDs bundled with an introduction to debian and the main tools ("CHIP" PC magazine). And I got it installed quite without problems. The only thing which I regarded as bad were some really outdated packages in hamm (see the above issue). Some months later, I helped a friend who had problems with a SUSE setup. When I wanted to configure something, YAST crashed, and after this I was absolutely convinced of using debian and not SUSE because debian tools work reliably. SUSE has not even a tool like modconf!!! When I had to install Linux on a SparcStation IPX at school which only had a floppy drive and a network connection, I was very glad that I could install the base system using a nice set of boot floppies. I don't think this is easily possible with RedHat!? This machine which is used as file server has never crashed for months now. Does this affect anything? I still > couldn't make my sound card to work. Is there anything else I should do? Yes. Make bzdisk/bzImage/bzlilo instead, because this produces a better compressed and therefore smaller kernel. If the kernel is too large, it cannot be installed and so your sound card cannot work. Or put some drivers into modules. You should enable the kernel module autoloader in the make menuconfig-config menu :-), so the kernel loads the drivers you need automatically. But if you're a newbie, I'd recommend you to compile support for all devices directly into the kernel. Two reasons come to my mind which could be the cause for the not-function of your soundcard: - You have configured the IRQs/DMAs/IO ports in a wrong way (see soundcard manual) - But now, as zimage did not work, I think you are not really booting your new kernel, but the old one instead. I think it's not good to make bzimage or zimage for a newbie, because it requires a manual kernel install to work. There are two other choices which are easier, they compile the kernel AND install it: I agree with Kent that creating a bootdisk at first and testing the kernel is safer. You can do this by make bzdisk (or make zdisk if the kernel is very small, but probably it does not work.). When you see that your machine is booting up ok from the disk (be sure that you have configured the bootup sequence a: c: in your BIOS!), then I'd recommend make bzlilo, so that your kernel is automatically configured for booting from the HDD. Note that you always need make dep before the bz... and make modules, make modules_install after it. Kind Regards, Stephan Hachinger

Hi! I'm also a 386etc. fan and I can tell you that in fact many stores still sell 4MB simm (=30pin) modules (at least here in Germany), so that quite every old machine (if it has four or eight slots) can be upgraded to 16 or 32 MB of RAM. Sometimes you can also get these modules for a very cheap price at a second-hand market. Hello! If messages are scrolling down too fast, you can wait till it stops and then scroll up by pressing shift and the cursor-up key. Do you know at which controller and position your cdrom is connected? If it's primary master, it's /dev/hda, primary sl=dev/hdb, sec. ma=/dev/hdc, sec. sl=/dev/hdd. If it's connected to a promise udma controller add-on card or similar, it maybe won't work for install! It has to be connected at the mainbrd controllers (if your mainbord has some). Re: AWE64 Configuration...
Hello! I don't really know what the problem with your config is, but I can tell you it'll probably work fine if you compile the drivers as modules (don't forget to give the parameters you've set in isapnp.conf to them). But I guess the problem with your config is, that the driver initializes first, and then you change the adresses etc. of your pnp hardware via isapnp. I'd try once with an empty isapnp.conf file - maybe it works then. Regards, Stephan P.S.: As for myself, I also use alsa, because I've now got a new pci card which doesn't work with oss drivers. > "James K. Re: Tru Type Fonts Question
Hello! X cannot handle the ttf dir although xfs is installed. Instead, you must add "unix/:7100" to your XF86config, because, I think, xfs-xtt (you must install THIS VERSION, not normal xfs!!!) serves the fonts to X via this tcp port. And you have to create xfonts.scale etc. etc. etc. in the dir with the fonts (I don't know these steps exactly any more, see howto) and the ttf-dir has to be added to the "catalog" line in the file /etc/X11/xfs/config. > 4) Ran the "mkttfdir" utility. Shouldn't there > be a "ttmkfdir" utility??? Where is it??? Don't know about it, but sounds like they are equal or someone as written the name in a false way in some howto or description you've read! But, all of this isn't necessary if you just download the xfstt package, install and use it. It's really easier to set up, I think, and I don't know any disadvantage of xfstt in comparison to xfs-xtt. I think I'll do this after I've wasted my time setting up xfs-xtt instead of xfstt some weaks ago. ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/potato/main/binary-i386/x11/xfstt_1.1.deb Kind Regards, Stephan Hachinger - Original Message - From: "Christopher W. Re: Building kde2 from source packages
Hello! Compiling takes about 24 hours (with kOffice) on my P1/133 machine, so I did my last install with the packages at kde.tdyc.org, but the packages lead to dependency problems :(. These are the steps I did for installing it before I used the packages and which I will probably do again with the final version: 1.) get qt2.2.1 source and kde source packages (at least kde libs, support and base) 1a.) :) unpack the qt tarball in usr/local; rename the unpacked subdir into "qt" and change your bash configuration according to its readme 2.) unpack all other tar.gzs (i suggest using a special directory for that, although the files will be unpacked into subdirs) 3.) look into the file COMPILING (or something similar) in the kdelibs subdir, and look for the options for building) 4.) change into the qt dir and do ./configure --opts, where opts are the different options which are suggested in the above file ("COMPILING") - *VERY IMPORTANT FOR WORKING GIF/JPG SUPPORT!!!* 4a.) do "make" in the qt dir 5.) change into the kdesupport dir, ./configure, make, make install (will install it in /usr/local/kde) 6.) do the same with the kdelibs 7.) do the same with all other packages (after kdelibs, you can build and install any other packages in any order) 8.) switch to /usr/local/kde/bin/startkde as default window manager Kind Regards, Stephan Hachinger P.S. Hello! Can you please tell me which version your ssl packages are (0.95?) because I also don't have https support and want to veryfy if it's because of the firewall which I use for http connections or if it's because of wrong libs. Re: Netscape 6.0/konqueor
Hello! Thanks for the information, I have the same libssl installed. I think, the problem with the homebanking site I wanted to access is really that my proxy server doesn't listen https requests. Hmm, till I can fix it I'll access the site from the machine this proxy is running on (a windoze one ;) ), maybe another proxy software has https support. (OT) S3 Vision 964 card under dosemu - video bios config
Hello! Although I must confess this is off-topic: Does anyone know how to configure dosemu with this card to run 640*480 vga graphics mode applications? I've already tried the attached config, but when I try to run dosemu, it fails to start. I think it has something to do with the bios adress and size. Here is the information given on this issue by the graphics card manufacturer (ELSA): Video-BIOS-ROM adress: C-C7FFF Any suggestions? Thanks in advance and merrry christmas, Stephan Hachinger dosemu.conf Description: Binary data
Re: Setup of X 4.0 and ALSA
Hello! I neither have woody nor X4.0 but I think I can give you some hints on the alsa issue. It does a good job at my machine with an ESS card. I compiled it myself. For doing this, you need the sources of your kernel in /usr/src/linux. Then download the alsa sources from www.alsa-project.org. You need alsa-driver, alsa-lib and alsa-utils. There are scripts included in these which compile the sources and produce rpm packages automatically. I called them and then converted the rpms to debs using alien. The resulting debs are really fine, after I installed them I found a whole bunch of alsa soundcard modules in my modules directory, and I just configured them by using modconf. There's also a kind of setup utility included in alsa but I think I just didn't need it and gave the proper module parameters directly in modconf. See www.alsa-project.org about the proper parameters and about the module name which is right for your soundcard - and don't forget to install the OSS emulation modules, of course. And you mustn't forget to unmute the devices by using alsamixer or for example the kde mixer before you want to listen to music because all devices are muted by default if you use alsa. At my machine, the kde2 mixer unmutes them at kde startup - I only had to unmute them once. If you can get the soundcard to work by using oss or kernel-included modules, then better don't spend time on setting up alsa. If the drivers included in the kernel distribution aren't working properly, alsa is surely worth a try - especially because you can create the debs quite easily.
