Did you make sure:

1. correct device is set to record from
2. recording is enabled
3. input volume is large enough

If you are not sure send the output of command 'amixer' so we can check.

In fact, unless you have only one sound device, the command should
be 'amixer -cN' where N is the number of your sound card and can change
after reboot. So first you have to type 'cat /proc/asound/cards' to
find your card number.

I meant 'input source'. On my machine it can be:

'Rear Mic' 'Front Mic' 'Line' 'CD'

You are member of audio group, so that's fine. By 'recording enabled I
meant on/off switch.

I had such a problem and solved it by installing firmware for the

To help us find the cause of your problem, it would be nice if you
could provide us more information:
- your sound setup (do you use alsa, pulseaudio, jack...)
- which mic device/driver is in question (mic connected to your sound
card which is X, mic from your webcam which is Y...)
- what program do you use for communication (Zoom, Teams, Meet, Skype,
Telegram...)

Of course, Mozilla cannot solve Debian bugs and it looks like the bug
is from Debian. It is possible the bug is from Thunderburd (not
Mozilla as Thunderbird is not part of Mozilla anymore), but still if you
don't know it the correct way is to report the bug to Debian and if they
determine the bug is upstream they will forward it.

Maybe you need to install a firmware. What is the model of your
wireless card? Use lspci or lsusb to find out, depending on how your
card is connected. Also you can use

# dmesg | grep -i firmware

to see messages related to firmware (if there are any).

You have DENIED entries where apparmor prevents qemu-system-x86 to
access files /sys/devices/system/node/ and /sys/devices/system/cpu/.
Try to edit apparmor profile for qemu-system-x86 and reload it
afterwards. Profiles are located in /etc/apparmor.d. There are guides
on the web how to do it.

You can download only parts of libreoffice that you need, e.g.

apt install libreoffice-writer libreoffice-calc

Also, you can use --no-install-recommends option:

apt-get --no-install-recommends install libreoffice-writer libreoffice-calc

Hi local10,

Launch juk from terminal to be able to see its debugging messages. Also
you can reboot with the old kernel to see if juk works, maybe your new

As of my experience, th only solution is this:

Insert the flash.
# mkdir /media/usb0
# mount /dev/sdb /media/usb0 # (replace sdb with device node of your
flash)
# rm /media/cdrom
# ln -s usb0 /media/cdrom
# apt-get update
# apt-get install gparted

The essential fact is that APT always looks any disk in /media/cdrom.
If you want to add another disk, it's possible, but first you have to
mount it somewhere and make /media/cdrom point to that dir. The same
trick you use when you are asked to insert another disk during
install/upgrade packages.

There is a program named 'flashrom' in Debian, but I don't know how
reliable is it as BIOS flash is quite a dangerous operation. I decided
to risk several years ago on an AMD system with MSI motherboard and was
successful.

Maybe your flash plugins are different, or totally missing from the

Use reportbug tool to file a bug.

Try this to list all packages that are installed and have acpi in
either package name and description:

apt-cache search acpi | while read package_name rest; do if dpkg -l
$package_name &>/dev/null; then echo $package_name; fi; done

Also, kernel has support for ACPI.

And it's not necessary to know exact package which is to blame, as
package maintainers can reassign a bug report to another package.

Because linux-image-4.19.0-4-amd64 and linux-image-4.19.0-5-amd64 are
two different packages, not two versions of a package. Install
linux-image-amd64 package which depends on newest kernel version and it

If I am not mistaken crontab -e edits root's crontab, however, according

I thaught root's crontab is /etc/crontab. Thanks. Which command then to

CUPS - bottom margin to big

2007-03-23 Thread Marko Randjelovic
When I print a test page, the bottom line is around 12.5 mm from edge of
the paper. Other margins are around 40 mm. Because of this to high
bottom margin, Firefox doesn't print whole footer, since you cannot set
any value to more than 0.5 in File/Print/Properties.

Is there some way to fix this?

Thanks.

Re: pppconfig "command not found"

2007-03-24 Thread Marko Randjelovic

No, the pppconfig package is not installed from some strange reason. And I cannot connect to the internet to download it.

If you can post to this mailing list, then you have internet access from
some other computer. I think it should be enough to download just these
two files:

http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/p/ppp/ppp_2.4.4rel-8_amd64.deb
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/p/pppconfig/pppconfig_2.3.15_all.deb

They can fit even of floppy disk. Then take it to your computer, mount
the floppy or whatever, change to mount directory and install with

dpkg -i ppp_2.4.4rel-8_amd64.deb
dpkg -i pppconfig_2.3.15_all.deb

Just to mention, since you are on dial-up, it would be probably the best
to acquire Etch DVDs.

Reporting a bug (was: fglrx driver problems)

2007-03-29 Thread Marko Randjelovic
I run Etch on machine with Nvidia nForce3 250 motherboard and Radeon
9550 graphics card. DRI is not working neither with radeon, nor fglrx
driver. I tried several versions of fglrx driver and kernel, Debian and
vanilla.

I think it's a bug and that probably is in kernel. I want to file a bug
report.

Both radeon and fglrx log files refer to kernel module, which in was in
all cases loaded (agpgart was linked statically, and also drm and radeon
modules were present, sometimes statically, sometimes dynamically).

Also may be interesting, I tried with Nvidia card and DRI was working.

Do you think it's kernel or video drivers? Should I file a bug report
only to Debian or also to original project?

In Debian, you install it with

apt-get install tomcat5.5 tomcat5.5-admin tomcat5.5-webapps

Then edit
"/var/lib/tomcat5.5/conf/tomcat-users.xml" to enable admin user for web
interface. Then you can access web interface at "http://localhost:8180";.

Relevant configuration file is also "/etc/default/tomcat5.5".

Yes, it is faster. Packages are not less stable, but some are
unavailable. It does need significantly more memory, but your system
should work fine, unless you use some very "hungry" apps like Eclipse.
You can install some 32-bit apps using dpkg with --force-architecture
option. If you need Acroread, first install ia32-libs-gtk from Ubuntu.

I think you are right. The fan malfunction is probably not the cause,
since it is mounted on north bridge, and IDE controler is in south
bridge, that doesn't need a fan.

So, replace a motherboard.

I did this and now there is no mention of ipv6, but still the same
delay. Setting 'VERBOSE=yes' in /etc/default/rcS didn't help, it just says

Setting up networking.
Configuring network interfaces.

And at this point there is a delay, and then

Starting portmap daemon.

Any ideas?

Which kernel version is it? You don't need SCSI emulation under 2.6. And
CD cannot be SATA, only IDE.

The problem was in my /etc/network/interfaces:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
# allow-hotplug eth0

address 192.168.0.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 192.168.0.1

Some time ago I commented the line "allow-hotplug eth0" and added "auto
eth0", because I had some problems. Everything was working fine, until
one upgrade, when this delay started to occur. I have restored old
setting and now there is no delay, I hope problems will not start again.
I tried two times, but as I can remember they didn't occur every time.

First, try to get Etch if you have posibilities. It has much newer software.

Anyway, Sarge should support reiserfs, even if kernels does not, you
need only to install grub and it does support reiserfs. As I can
remember, you need to enter "expert2.6" at Install CD boot prompt to get
all options.

Maybe ReZound made bad wav file. Try some other wav file, from different
source. Can this wav file be played with some player?

Rezound is also in Etch, version 0.12.2beta-8 (earlier). Anyway,
Audacity should be fine for the purpose.

You need to download patchset, you have freepats in Debian, but it is
not complete. I recommend Gravis UltraSound patchset, download it from

http://www.anime.net/~goemon/timidity/goemon.tgz

Uncompress it to /usr/local/share/midi/. Move the file goemon.cfg to
/etc/timidity/. Than add this line to /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg:

source /etc/timidity/goemon.cfg

Also, you can use soundfonts, there are some sites that enable free
download.

aptitude dist-upgrade removes important packages

2006-11-17 Thread Marko Randjelovic

When I run "aptitude dist-upgrade", it says some packages will be removed:

The following packages are unused and will be REMOVED:
 bug-buddy eog esound fast-user-switch-applet file-roller gcalctool
 gconf-editor gdm gedit gedit-common gnome-backgrounds gnome-cards-data
 gnome-core gnome-games gnome-games-data gnome-keyring-manager

 libguile-ltdl-1 libopenh323-1.18.0 libpt-1.10.0 libpt-plugins-alsa
 libpt-plugins-v4l python-gnome2-desktop system-tools-backends vino zenity
 zip

There is obviously something wrong because I use many of these packages.
It wants to remove whole gnome. If I use apt-get, 0 packages are to be
removed.

Is this some bug in aptitude?

aptitude unmarkauto '~M!~R~i'

The problem is probably due to not using the native resolution 1440x900.
'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' would probably allow you to include this

tried it. You can simply edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and where you see the

add your native resolution at the end.

 (a) Can I download the 2.6 kernel from backports
on to a CDROM and boot the old hardware from
that ? (I would leave the old 2.4.27 kernel
untouched, so that I could also boot the old
 hardware with the 2.4 kernel).

The kernel I was thinking of downloading is :-

linux-image-2.6.16-1-686_2.6.16-11bpo1_i386.deb

or possibly

linux-image-2.6.17-2-686_2.6.17-9~bpo.1_i386.deb

Would either of these be okay ?

I want to later upgrade to Etch, so I don't want to

get a kernel version greater than the version that the
stable Etch will have.

 (b) Assuming the 2.6 kernel from backports works okay
on the new hardware, is it then possible to
upgrade the new hardware in the normal way
(i.e using apt) to the stable version of Etch
(which, I understand will have a 2.6.18 kernel)
 when that is released ?

Any help with the above problem would be much

appreciated.

I think that should work. By installing new kernel, you won't lose 2.4
kernel because it should only happen to appear new entry on Grub menu.

Hello,

I'm a Debian testing user. A few days ago I recompiled the kernel
(2.6.18) and I installed it in the "Debian way" (by creating a .deb
package of the kernel and installing it). But I've got a problem: when
I boot the system with the new kernel, appears a lot of times the
message "modprobe: FATAL: Could not load
/lib/modules/2.6.18-jaume/modules.dep". When it stops, the system
continues booting normally, then it goes into the X and KDE and I have
no problems then, all works perfectly.

I've tried to do "modprobe -l" and I get the list of the modules
located in that folder (/lib/modules/2.6.18-jaume/). And I've checked
with konqueror that the folder exists and has things inside, including
the file "modules.dep".

Any idea to solve that?

Thanks in advance

Hi, Jaume.

I have never installed kernel the "Debian way", but anyway this message
looks strange to me. Maybe you changed permissions on that file somehow.
Or it is damaged. Open terminal, su to root and type

chown root:root /lib/modules/2.6.18-jaume/modules.dep
chmod 644 /lib/modules/2.6.18-jaume/modules.dep
depmod -a

fglrx driver problems

2007-01-02 Thread Marko Randjelovic
With fglrx-driver package from debian, I didn't have direct rendering,
and xv did not work, so I have downloaded
ati-driver-installer-8.32.5-x86.x86_64.run from Ati site. However,
building of Debian package fails

Is there some way to get this driver working on Debian? I have Radeon

All right, but I am not sure if it supports dri with Radeon 9550. I read

Manual java alternative

2007-01-04 Thread Marko Randjelovic
I installed jdk1.6.0 in /opt by running sun's package
"jdk-6-linux-amd64.bin". Now I need to update alternatives, but there
are 64 of them and that would be to complicated. I made a file
.jdk.jinfo in /usr/lib/jvm and tried to run update-java-alternatives,
but it looks like it doesn't work.

Is there some way to easily switch to new java that is not installed
with .deb? Or is there some Debian package for jdk6 or jdk-1.5.0_8,
since this newest 1.5.0_10 made me problems?

Now you can try two more things:

1) Give the exact version number instead of the wildcard *.
2) Just download the packages and install them manually via dpkg.

Thanks, now I can start Eclipse (solution 2).
Yet, I would like to use new Java 6. I was monitoring memory usage and

I think it is memory issue. Programs generally are using more memory
with new releases. Use 'free' command to see your memory situation.
'top' can tell you which processes are consuming most memory. You can
use also System Monitor with gnome or KDE System Guard but they use more

run a full backup (making tar.bz2 files)
run galeon
watch a dvd on VLC, deinterlace-blend, expand to full-screen

I cannot get away from feeling that it is a great waste of resources,
not computer, but resources for production of new memory, processors,
hard disk drives, etc. You spend not only material, but also energy, and
of course human work. On the other hand, you save time of programmers.

Is it really worth it or is the computer industry just looking for a way

Re: Does XFS work with LVM?

2007-01-08 Thread Marko Randjelovic

Roberto C. Sanchez wrote:

mke2fs(8) (which is what you get when you run 'man mkfs.ext3'), states:
   -m reserved-blocks-percentage
Specify the percentage of the filesystem blocks reserved for the
super-user. This avoids fragmentation, and allows root-owned
daemons, such as syslogd(8), to continue to function correctly
after non-privileged processes are prevented from writing to the
filesystem. The default percentage is 5%.

So, the default is 5%, and you can make it as small or as large as you
want. Incidentally, that is a *good* thing, since it prevents a rouge
unprivileged process from crashing the system by filling the disks with
crap.

I think I tried that option, too.

Of course, you are more than welcome to use reiserfs, JFS, or XFS.
However, reiserfs, from my understanding, has its own set of issues and
JFS and XFS are best left to "experts" or at least to people who know
what they are doing. For example, please read these two threads about
XFS:

http://oss.sgi.com/archives/xfs/2005-06/msg00155.html
http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/6/29/10

I recommend also

http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/aix/library/au-unix-reiserFS/index.html
http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/388

People had problems with reiserfs, but that was long ago. It is true
that traditionaly ext3 is most reliable, but now reiserfs has
data=journal option that seems to improve reliability, as it states, in
the case of disaster, but also reduces write speed.

I myself am using reiserfs on all both my machines. On my desktop
computer since 2004 (a few months xfs), and on router since feb-2006.
Router is always on, and last year I had at least 50 power failures, and
no single problem. I would like to mention that there is always writing
to the drive. Also, while I used xfs, there was one situation, but it
was repaired with fsck.

My friend has similar configuration. He had serious damage on power
failure which he mostly managed to recover from, but on that drive also
appeared bad sectors.

I think you should give us more information. You should cite whole error

probably trying to install the program with dpkg, and don't have other

It's a production server so stability is important, although it mostly

Thanks.

You can check bug reports to see if packages you are using are affected
with some bugs that can cause you problems. Etch is not quite stable,
look at http://bugs.debian.org/release-critical/. Sarge had less than 10

It looks like apt have an idea backports.org has priority of 1 when there is no
entry in preferences file. Why?

Don't get confused, since I have made some modifications to files. Now
backports.org is identified by release statement,
not origin.

Every other priorities are recognized correctly.

Re: APT Strange Behaviour (Priorities)

2008-07-18 Thread Marko Randjelovic
Thanks, Daniel, for this helpful information.

I just discovered another similar paradox. I tried to get source package for
pidgin from backports.org. That repository
was explicitly pinned at 500 and testing at 290. But, look

main:~# apt-get source pidgin
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Need to get 13.2MB of source archives.
Get:1 http://ftp2.de.debian.org testing/main pidgin 2.4.3-1 (dsc) [1800B]
Get:2 http://ftp2.de.debian.org testing/main pidgin 2.4.3-1 (tar) [13.1MB]
Get:3 http://ftp2.de.debian.org testing/main pidgin 2.4.3-1 (diff) [59.0kB]
Fetched 13.2MB in 8m46s (25.0kB/s)
gpg: Signature made Wed 02 Jul 2008 07:21:28 PM CEST using DSA key ID B70E403B
gpg: Can't check signature: public key not found
dpkg-source: extracting pidgin in pidgin-2.4.3
dpkg-source: unpacking pidgin_2.4.3.orig.tar.gz
dpkg-source: applying ./pidgin_2.4.3-1.diff.gz

So, it is downloading from testing, although it has lower priority. How could I
make it chose backports.org?

Did you apply xyz_1.2.diff.gz? You have to apply debian patch, so debian
subdirecory is created for building with dpkg-buildpackage. You should have
extracted package with 'dpkg-source -x xyz_1.2.dsc' and patch would have been
applied automaticaly. Then you apply your modifications and document that in the
changelog. And then build the package.

Why would you apply any patch _after_ you create packages? And patch for 1.0
would not affect 1.2 version (it is intended for 1.0).

I recommend you first read New Maintainers Guide, then if have further problems,
explain more precisely what are you trying to do.

Problem with changing symbolic link to shared library

2008-05-22 Thread Marko Randjelovic
Yesterday, I have changed some symbolic links in /usr/lib32 to point to
older version libraries. For example, there was

libxml2.so.2 -> libxml2.so.2.6.30

I have changed it to libxml2.so.2.6.27 and my printer stared to work.
But after I run 'apt-get upgrade', it returns to its original state. How
to prevent this? I think something is choosing the highest version.

From his post,
"Today I installed sid to check whether that bug was solved but

At the moment, experimental is more of a waiting ground for packages not
intended for etch, and anyway, installing a few carefully selected
packages from experimental is not dangerous.

I did recommend Xorg 7.2 (the one in experimental) because the radeon
has seen quite a lot of development, especially for r300 (used for the
rv350 cards also I think) and might have fixed whatever problems he had.

http://packages.debian.org/testing/x11/xserver-xorg-video-ati

As You can see from these links, Etch ati driver is at 7.2. 3D
accelleration works, but not sure about TV out, try googling a little.

You didn't write which distribution do You use. I use Etch and it opens

The problem was in BIOS settings of the motherboard. AGP aperture size
was at default value of 32MB, which was to small for kernel.
Furthermore, that option was hidden, so you have to press CTLR+F1 to
unhide it. I have set it to 256MB, but later I didn't remmember it.

However, write support is disabled by default, and it is dangerous to
use it, since it can cause data corruption. There is ntfs-3g driver that
provides stable read/write (http://www.ntfs-3g.org/), but is not
included in Etch.

If you need to use some jar files for your servlet, you can copy them to
"/usr/share/tomcat5.5/common/lib" or
"/var/lib/tomcat5.5/webapps/yourWebApp/WEB-INF/lib". Also, You can set
some tomcat 5.5 options in file "/etc/default/tomcat5.5".

You probably won't need it. In my experience, only wodim (cdrecord)
refused to work, but I can run it as normal user. If you come to need
it, you can always enable it by "sudo passwd"

Of course not, first try with another drive. And just felt on my mind,
maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to put newer firmware on that drive.
Look at Sony's site for the latest firmware.

Did you look at 'man pppd'? Here is what is says for your error code:

2 An error was detected in processing the options given, such as
two mutually exclusive options being used.

And amd64 consumes much more memory. However, Opera 9.10 works fine for
me with flash, just download static version and use install with "dpkg
--force-architecture".

Greater problem is Adobe Reader. I make it work by installing Ubuntu
ia32-libs-gtk. Still, there is some bug so I can't use "reverse pages".
