RE: 100mbit nic: intel or 3com?
ditto .. Everone *says* they have world class 10/100 cards, but how many really talk to each other at that speed reliably ? When I am doing an daily backup transfers the line runs ~ 85-90 MB for an hour, I've had too many cards drop down to 10 or half duplex (eh!) or re-autonegotiate every couple of minutes or so. Some cards just don't do 100 or f/d at all with certain devices on the other end. Intel nics are ok; they are scads better than realtek (don't get me started on those) linksys or dlink cheapies. 3coms will save you some extra hair pulling when your 100MB or 1000MB network is suddenly performing like a 10/half-duplex network running a windows server. 3com has some low-ends; I'd stay away from those too. I would stick with 905B or above. What are peoples experiences with switches ? For the office where the co. pays, I would have to recommend cisco for the same reasons. But for the soho or home network, cisco is not cost feasible. How well do small switches scale ? How many devices/traffic to saturate ? Victor, IMHO (and this might get me flamed), 3com. I have tried a lot of other cards and I have found that 3com's are well supported (by both linux and doze) and just seem to keep running. 3com's are usually more expensive then the others, but I feel the extra cost is worth having less aggravation. Installing on a second disk (hdb)
on an already running system ? I'm getting a fair amount of disk seek timeout messages in the kernel log and I'd like to rebuild the system with a new HD. But I'd also like to have it down for the least amount of time possible. Can I plug the new hd at hdb, make the partition structure I want, put the install image somwhere on any disk/partitions, then boot to a floppy, give some input to the loader and have it start installing locally ? RE: 'Evolution' download blues.
Perhaps some bad packet was received, or maybe it crapped out in the middle of downloading, then tried to resume another day after they updated the version. CRC would then mismatch. There is a place where apt stores debs (full downloads & partials): /var/cache/apt(/partial). My recommendation is to go the var/cache/apt directory that has evolution_1.0.2-ximian.1_i386.deb in it, rm the file, then try to reinstall/redownload. If it happens again, then data corruption is happening somewhere near your end of the network or inside your machine. Bad network card ? Failing HD ? RE: Enough time wasted, moving on
I feel bad that you've had such a hard time with Woody. I tried it too about 8 months ago with the similar results. X didn't work (that was ok, since it was a server not a gui desktop), php4 didn't work, php3 wasn't available, etc... I got everything working, did an apt-get update, upgraded the newer packages (10-15 packages per day were updated then) and 10% of my operations broke again. I've scores of Debian boxes that are used for revenue generating ventures. Downtime is not an option for me nor for who I answer to. I thought it was basically understood in the IT world (whatever os or software you use) that you would never *ever* use something called "testing" for production use. Even though I have heard 1000's of Debian woody users say its great and stable, 1000s is a small part of the Debian community, including coders, packagers & users. I realize that I myself am just a "user". I have felt like I am a greedy person for that, since I have never contributed just installed and "used". However, if there is a package that I like on stable and I would like to see it on Woody, then I would start using Woody and dealing with the 'tinkering'. If it is that important to me, then I will have to use testing and start packaging myself. This social agreement institutes barting the OS for coding/packaging and I must say it (Debian) works pretty good. I am getting proficient with dpkg, but I have not picked out a package that I care enough about yet to jump to testing. Being just a "user" , I hear that the Woody freeze is happening. I think that this means no more packages are going to be added and also by certain timelines packages that are already in there will be booted off the release if not relatively bug-free and/or not following Debian policy. First one I get in my inbox with snailmail address will get the cds mailed to them. I've burned up 2 full days, gotten no help whatever from the list. Found the install routines to be unusable. All I hear from Woody is `can't won't or doesn't' And this on a machine that has had 2 flavors of linux, 2 of the BSDs and Solaris (intel) install successfully. Hardware recognized etc. My nic is not found, X doesn't run, I get a message after the install that there were errors during install. Please fix the errors mentioned above... none are mentioned. I've tried the simplicity of Tasksel and the labor instensive dselect hell, 3 fullbore tries at installing. I have a non-functional system at the end of 2 days. When I see things so basic like the names referred to when the different cds are requested during package install. The names the routine asks for are nowhere on my CDs. Not that hard to see what is really meant but only because I'm already familiar with some of the lingo. Maybe I got hoodwinked getting them from `The sphere' When I see things like that gauranteed to cause confusion, I know that at the Debian organization someone is asleep at the switch. And can rest assured that I will be in for lots of unnecessary grief caused by `loose' organization and homeboy packaging. One has to think, what else is poorly done here. But then again for someone who enjoys major unnecessary tinkering. Relentless `fixes' and the like, Here is a chance to get a setup that will keep you busy for a long time, and absolutely free. I'll pay the postage too. Maybe I should have tried the released version, but something about the name `potato' puts one in mind of a large overweight weak vegetable lying on a couch. At least `woody' sounded.. well erect :-) CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE: This transmission may contain confidential information belonging to the sender, which may be legally privileged. RE: SB AUDIGY Player supported by Linux?
I've been thinking of getting it when it becomes available - it is an audigy card: Shielded, not in a electrically noisy computer box, has tons of ins & outs, HQ sound. Plugs directly into usb, so then link /dev/dsp --> /dev/usbn and I should have sound with naught but a usb module, which I have loaded anyways. I think.. has anyone else tried an external sound card on linux ? I've seen another advertised on thinkgeek. -Original Message- From: Stephen Gran [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, January 16, 2002 10:06 AM To: Debian User List Subject: Re: SB AUDIGY Player supported by Linux? RE: gpm & xdm question
Well, have you looked into the /etc/rc?.d directories ? Assuming runlevel of 5 since you going into x, there should be a startup script for gpm in /etc/rc5.d named something like S88gpm. delete it. Now gpm won't start when entering level 5. It will still be running if you use another runlevel or start it yourself, so you might want make a kill script and place it in /etc/rc5.d. I use file-rc package, so all runlevel are config'ed in one file. -Original Message- From: Klaus Neumann [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, January 18, 2002 12:46 PM To: debian-user@lists.debian.org Subject: gpm & xdm question (Debian newbie): How can I prevent gpm and xdm from starting up automatically at boot time? RE: Screen Dump Util
I have a button that runs this with a click - /usr/bin/X11/import -window root dump.bmp It saves a shot of the root window in dump.bmp. There are options in the man page that will do a delay, snapshot only one window, etc... I've always wanted to do a date command, perl it up and make the filename of the import results datestamped like dump29012002_143900.bmp. Is there anyone out there that can do that in a perl-one-liner ?
