Mucking with filesystem

1998-08-31 Thread timothy
Hi!
I want to make my current /home/ filesystem bigger to store my ever
growing user owned source files. So how can/should I can automount (on
boot) another, (previously vfat,) partition under my user's home directory and
have my user own it just like the rest of the stuff there?

Thanks,
Timothy

Linux SMP

1998-08-31 Thread Philip Thiem
I'm wonder, and perhap some you linux buffs could help.
HOw great is the performance gain from SMP? I have been debating this
with a friend. I know linux has muli-threaded capability, but like the
kernal isn't explicitly multithreaded(or is it), yeah you can compile it
for multiple processors, and the same with other application without
explicitly using the threads library, sort of creating multiple
processes.. Are these process indpendent of each other in a way that a
noticable benefit would be gained from SMP. I'm new to the detail of
SMP so any information would be nice

Thanks

I am not writting because I want to write a FAQ. I am writting to you
because I can't find anyone else to write to! Please, you have to help
me!!!

I bought 4 CD's of Debian from CheapBytes. I installed the CD's
everything was very confusing but I somehow managed to install Debian
and get it working with Windows 95 on the same computer. I have a
Pentium 150 with 32 Mb ram and a 1 Gb hard drive. I have a PnP Modem
(33.6Kpbs) and a PnP sound card (AWE64 Gold). Now, I tried my level best
to learn a few commands of Linux. But I think it is simply impossible. I
have downloaded the Debian Manual. I am still searching for a way to
access my drives. I don't even know how to copy files in this Operating
System. It seems that this operating system is very cAsE-SeNsEtIvE! I
read many FAQ's but all the FAQ's tell you is that Linus Para... made
Linux with a bunch of Hackers! Then it tells you how good Linux is and
how bad windows 95 is. But I haven't come across a single Help file or a
FAQ that actually tells you how to use this Operating System.

Please send me some info on the basic commands and on how I can connect
to internet using Linux. I know there is a isapnp utility and it is
supposed to configure my PnP Hardware using the isapnp.conf file (which
is a dump from the isapnpdump file). Anyhow, the problem is the diald or
the pppd. I don't know. What to do. I am at a stage at which I am
pulling out my hair in frustation. Please Help Me.

!! Any Help Will Be Highly Appreciated

  - Thank You--

PCMCIA-CS: configure?

1998-08-31 Thread Remo Badii
Dear Debian users,

I have installed Debian 2.0 successfully, including X.
I'd like to install pgplot, tgif, Netscape 4, for which I need an
ethernet connection: the former 2 packages are not on the CDs, and the
latter requres some archive files to be put on /tmp to work.
I have an IBM THinkpad 760CD on which I have been using an Accton
Ethernet Card with success in a previous Linux installation (SuSE 4.2,
made for me by a person who has left in the meantime).
I have installed the pcmcia-cs package: what should be done next?
Just edit the pcmcia.connf file?
Examples?
Thank you.

Just run dselect using ftp to get it from one of the mirrors

Thanks for that, Gary. The above link eventually led me to the right
solution. Basically, the BIOS had assigned the same interrupt to the SCSI
and Ethernet PCI controllers. (bah, stupid BIOSes :).

Anyway, just going into the BIOS config, clearing out all resource
configuration data, and rebooting did the trick. IRQs were re-assigned at
bootup, this time correctly :).

APM support?

1998-08-31 Thread Remo Badii
I cannot remember having seen any suggestion to include APM support in
the kernel during the (successful) installation of Debian 2.0 from the
CDs using dselect. Do I really have to load the source file(s) from an
FTP site and compile the kernel myself?
How do I find out what else has been included as an option in the
present kernel, so that I can include it in my next compilation (by the
way, the first one in my life)?
Thank you.

As I type, Laptop to ethernet...

1) get the kernel source code
2) configure a new kernel with *
1) TCP/IP enabled in the Networking options
2) Network Device Support and Ethernet enabled, but don't specify
the card at all.**
3) do a make dep, followed by a make-kpkg clean
4) next, do "make-kpkg --revision=personal.1 kernel_image" to make a
.deb file of your new kernel
5) now do a "make-kpkg --revision=personal.1 modules_image" to make the
pcmcia modules.
6) now change to "../" and find the two .deb files linux...deb and
pcmcia...deb
7) finally install the two deb files (dpkg -i lin... pcm...)
8) reboot.

* I make no warrenty for anything - if it blows up, it blows up. Make a
backup boot image & get LILO working before you start!
** The pcmcia drivers will pick up whatever devices are in the pcmcia
slots, don't be tempted to force the selection in the kernel - it won't
work.

Sendmail and virtualdomains

1998-08-31 Thread Adam Heczko
Hello,

today I tried to reconfigure mySendmail 8.8.8 (hamm distribution) to set
up some virtualdomains. I followed instructions I've seen at
www.sendmail.org/virtual-hosting.html and added line
FEATURE(virtusertable, `dbm /etc/virtusertable')dnl to my
/etc/mail/sendmail.mc file (at the end of file, to preserve my
configuration). Then I run sendmailconfig and Ooops ...
get error message "Class dbm not supported" or sth like this.
Am I doing sth wrong ?
How can I set up virtualhosting properly ?

All advices appreciate,

Yes, I guess you will have to recompile the kernel. But you do not
have to download it. It is on the CD. You will need to install:

kernel-source-2.0.34
kernel-package <- This one is important

Then have a look at /usr/doc/kernel-package/README.gz with zless.
Before actually doing it you can send me an e-mail with things
you might not understand.

Perhaps it is silly, but I can't understand why the official CD isn't simply a
mirror of the relevant files and directories of Debian's official ftp site.
I think that this way the problems like the one of cd_autoup.sh would be much
less distrurbing.
Making the official CD a mirror of Debian's official ftp site would also help
(a little) in the release of new versions. And it would also help (a little)
new users to get used to the directory structure of the ftp sites.

Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key

Since i'm new to the Debian system, i'd like to know where to
configure such an information.

BTW : i've another _big_ pb : sometimes X freeze my system :-( No way to
even get a console, the only solution is to push the reset button...

Yesterday, this problem arose when i try to use xadmin and push the
Date/Time editor button... (the Runlevel, File System and Printer
editor buttons are not available, is it normal ?)

I've a CPU Cyrix P166+ with 96 Mo EDO Ram. I'm working with the
Windowmaker environment given with the Hamm distribution.

Is there any report of such a problem ?

Thanx,

Network connection

After problems with no network connection from the PCMCIA card (which
worked since the beginning), I found out a solution:
I issued the command

Questions: (1) Is this correct (/elegant)?
   (2) Is this permanent or do I have to reissue the command
   after each reboot?
Thank you and to all who tried to help me a couple of hours ago.

Hello Remo:

Within the /etc/init.d/network file your network route command
should be specified ( for your network ). Check this file
to make certain that the route arguments are correct.

Every time you boot your system, the ifconfig and route
directives will be issued based on the contents of the
network file. Otherwise you will have to manually issue
this route command every time you boot your system.

Have had a look at the scripts in the debian-cd package.
Using these and a debian mirror, you can generate an debian CD

Have you tried walking through the connect sequence manually with minicom?

Hi,

Let me guess.. you start x as normal user (or login with xdm as user) and
then you su to root and try to run X11 programs as root on the display
that is owned by the user? That won't work.

You'll have to do this:

  $ su -
  password:
  # export $DISPLAY=:0
  # export $XAUTHORITY=/home/user/.Xauthority
  # some-xclientprog &
  #

Substitute the right username for user in the line above.
Only root can do this, because root can read anybody's files, even if the
files are mode 600 (shows up in "ls -l" as r-- - readable only for the
owner of the files.)

Alternatively, install ssh. Ssh (among other things) does connection
forwarding for xclients.) With ssh it would work like this:

  $ ssh -l root localhost
  password:
  # some-xclientprog &
  #

Cheers,

Joost

Try "linux for dummies" or "unix for dummies." Despite the silly title,
they might actually be quite useful if you're totally new to unix.

If you are already familiar with msdos, then the dos2unix-HOWTO might be
what you need. I'll explain below where to get HOWTO's

You should certainly look at

   http://sunsite.unc.edu/LDP

There, you'll find a lot of good documentation. "Running Linux" for
example is a book that you can buy in the bookstore or download from
sunsite. There are a couple more of these books downloadable from the
net. BTW, it doesn't hurt to buy one, it reads a lot more comfortable.

Also on sunsite you'll find a myriad of HOWTO's. You can actually install
them on your own computer as a debian package. Look for the
doc-linux-text and doc-linux-html packages on your cd. It will install in
/usr/doc/HOWTO. Oh, did I tell you yet that all debian packages install
some documentation in /usr/doc/ ?

Last but not least there are the manpages. You seem to have missed those.
In fact, the unix system is fairly well documented overall, compared to
msdos. Try "man man" and "man bash" for starters. You can find what
manpages package "foo" contains by typing "dpkg -L foo | grep man"

Besides man pages, there are also a lot of "info" pages on your system.
Those often provide even more extensive forms of documentation, but the
info browser program is a bit difficult to learn.

You should definately install the dwww package on your system. When you
do that, you can read the documentation on your system with your favorite
webbrowser. Just point it at http://localhost/dwww

> Please send me some info on the basic commands.

When I got started with linux, I read a whole lot of HOWTO's and bought
some books. Particularly useful are "Learning the bash shell," "Linux in
a nutshell," "Running Linux" and "The Linux network administrator's
guide."

> how I can connect to internet using Linux. I know there is a isapnp
> utility and it is supposed to configure my PnP Hardware using the

First install the isapnptools package. Then read the pnpdump and isapnp
manpages (if I remember correctly.) Then configure /etc/isapnp.conf.
Yes, I know it's hard, but that's because plug-'n-pray just plain sucks.
borrow a friend's external modem if you're getting short on hair to pull
out :-)

Okay, when you know for certain that the modem works now (you can test it
with the minicom program in the package with the same name) it is finally
time to set up ppp. Just type "pppconfig" (as root of course, and you
must have pppconfig installed, type "dpkg -s pppconfig to check that.)
Pppconfig makes internet easy.

Don't try diald until you figure out ppp in the first place.

This sounds really bogus.

Do you *really* need smail's bangpath handling? With this, I mean using
the uucp maps etc. to figure out the correct routing etc. If all you
have is a number of uucp neighbours with which you have to exchange
email, exim is fully up to the task, given a couple of changes to the
exim.conf file.

I use exim with uucp on two debian systems. These are globally the
changes needed:

In the global part:

trusted_users = mail:uucp

for receiving mail correctly.

In the transports section:

uucp:
  driver = pipe
  user = nobody
  command = "/usr/bin/uux -r - $host!rmail ${local_part}"
  return_fail_output = true

In the routers section, below any possible smtp entries:

xs4all:
  driver = domainlist
  transport = uucp
  route_list = "xs4all.nl xs4all"

I only want to send emails over the uucp link if they're destined for
the xs4all.nl domain, which explains the route_list. However, "transport
= uucp" works fine for the smarthost and other entries as well.

Furthermore a rewrite rule may be necessary if your uucp partner sends
mail to a bang path. I don't need that with xs4all, but I can look it up
on the other system (not local for me at the moment) if necessary.

That would be great (haven't checked yet).
Note that other people's concerns for vim to do the "safe" thing
(i.e. leave the backups until you know how vim works) is bogus, as I've
been using vim for at least 5 years (hmmm, version 1.27) and "knew" that
vim doesn't leave backups. Otherwise, if backups are preferred, put
them somewhere all together like /tmp so that the system isn't littered
with these ~ files everywhere.

Now to remove the "set tw=78" which causes gratuitious line wraps, very
painful when editing e.g. a shell script. Rely on the autocommands to
turn this feature on for emails etc, that works fine!

Also, put "set directory=~/tmp,/var/tmp,/tmp,.". This causes the "swap
file" (where the backup stuff is kept if something happens in the middle
of an edit session) to be put in one of those directories, the first if
possible etc. That prevents those pesky ".swp" files appearing in the
current directory, which screw up your terminal when you do "grep bla *"
due to control characters in the swap file being printed. In fact, at
one time in Vim development, the current directory was the default,

Very much OFFTOPIC: But help needed :)

1998-08-31 Thread vaidhy
Hi All,

I am trying to build a system fro my friend with AMD K6 - 300. The
motherboard has a AGP slot and four PCI slots. When I plugged in my old PCI
video card, there is no signal to the monitor. Does he need a AGP video card ?

If so, which AGP card works fine with Debian and also with GGI (very early but
still..)?

Does AGP cards support SVGA or accelarated servers?

Thanks and regards,

Don't know about GGI, but I just installed debian 2.0 on a system with a
Diamond Viper 330 AGP. It works fine with the svga xserver, on 8, 16,
and 32 bit color depths, except that in the 32 bit depth the screen
shows some flicjkering pixels when there are changes on the screen (like
moving a window, or running xaos in autopilot mode). Anyone noticed
this too?

Yes. And download kernel-package as well, it will make your life _MUCH_

Look for this file:

/boot/config-2.0.34

(your version may vary) I believe it is a copy of the

/usr/src/linux/.config

file used to build the installed kernel.

It turns out that in order to run pppd as non-root the file

using Debian 1.3.

X won't work. I try to use the Config program, but when it says it is
switching to Graphics mode, it exists with can't connect to server
errors.

PPP won't work. I am using the same PPP scripts that worked with
both Re dHat and Slackware. With Debian, they start and wait a
couple seconds, then t hey quit. They never do any dialing. I have
the correct location of chat an d pppd (/usr/sbin/).

Congratulations!

Drives -- I'm assuming you're speaking of your floppy and CDROM -- can
be accessed using the 'mount' and 'umount' commands (for 'mount' and
'unmount' respectively). The floppy drive device is typically
/dev/fd0 and the CDROM -- if set up as master on the secondary IDE
channel -- is /dev/hdc. To access the floppy, you would type the
command:

mount /dev/fd0 /floppy

This would allow you to see the contents of the floppy by using 'cd'
to change to the '/floppy' directory in your root. Once you are
finished looking at your floppy use the umount command like this:

umount /floppy

A similar method can be used to mount the CDROM. (SEE ALSO:
CDROM-HOWTO, man pages: mount, umount)

I believe Igor mentioned "Linux for Dummies"... Great book! I
recommend it to any newcomer. (I was one of those unfortunate souls
who didn't own a computer of my own during college and was forced to
learn UNIX on a vt100 terminal without the aid of a book... I loved
it!) Also, pick up a "Quick reference" card for Unix or Linux at one
of your local computer suppliers. (I actually bought mine at a
college bookstore.) But, to get you started...

cpCopies file1 to file2.
mvMoves file1 to file2 (also used to
rename files).
ls Lists the directory contents
more Views the contents of a file 1-pg/time
less A nicer 'more'

See 'man ' for more details.

There's also a useful little thing called a pipe ('|'). With it, you
can view the directory contents in a page-by-page format...

ls | more

That should get you started, but you sould seriously visit your local
library or bookstore for a more comprehensive intro...

I've noticed that samba is prone to causing dialouts. According to a
cursory glance at the problem, samba binds to all available interfaces,
and broadcasts regularly to announce its workgroups and stuff like that.
Those broadcasts may be causing it.

Alternatively, Win95 pc's also do similar broadcasts, which is a problem
when using masquerading in combination with an isdn card in autodial
mode...

In both cases, ipfwadm can be your friend :-)

Not on IMAP proper. IMAP is a protocol. The CERT advisories have been for
buffer
overflows in some of the daemons that implement the protocol. The protocol is
not
inherently insecure--Mark Crispin at UW has gone to great lengths to design the

I congratulate you on having successfully installed the Debian GNU/Linux
system.

You need to read an introductory Unix book, such as O'reilly's "Learning
the UNIX Operating System" or one of Sobel's books such as Hands On
Linux series books from AWL. YOu need to learn a basic text command line
set for getting around UNIX or Linux.

Write me directly, not on the list, and I will send you some of the
material I give my students.

There are Linux web pages that are tutorial in nature, I'm sure that
someone on this list will mention the URLs.

A remark or two: Linux is just a free re implementation of the ideas and
ideals of the Unix(tm) operating system by a bunch of wonderful people.

It is better than Lose 95 or Lose NT in part because it is free, in part
because it is very much more robust than M$ operating systems.

It is not nearly as satisfactory from the point of view of Ms Average
user because it requires some technical knowledge to use, and there
really are no "killer (desktop) applications" yet. But for software
development, web hosting, or teaching computer science, there is no
better enviroment.

| The problem is not so much one of code as it is one of policy. I could
| hack out a script that would munge the relevant files into submission, but
| a real solution must be scalable and compatible with everything elses that
| needs those files.

Exactly!

Like I said, I have a script, and it works fine, but it's hardly a
general solution and almost certainly wouldn't suit the needs of
others.

I would think something along the lines of a /etc/dialups
directory with subdirectories for each ISP that contains the necessary
files. So, say I have 3 ISP's named, Dog_Slow, Too_Expensive, Work,
then I'd have a directory structure like:

/etc/dialups
  Dog_Slow/
etc/resolv.conf
etc/hosts
etc/smail/routers
etc/smail/config
  Too_Expensive/
etc/resolv.conf
etc/hosts
etc/smail/routers
etc/smail/config
  Work/
etc/resolv.conf
etc/hosts
etc/smail/routers
etc/smail/config

Now the script, or program, that does the setup for a specific ISP
just needs to traverse the entire directory tree for that ISP and copy
the files to the necessary system directory before initiating the
connection to the ISP. It's easy to add and remove files from the
setup by merely creating them in the proper location under the
/etc/dialups/ directory structure. The tricky bit is that
some of them may require that daemons be restarted, sendmail comes to
mind, although I don't use that on my Debian systems, and/or other
actions besides simple file copies.

That's half the battle, then you need a nice interface to generate
these files automatically and copy them to their respective locations
before connecting to the desired ISP. And all of this needs to be
doable by a user in the proper group, as well as root. Personally I'd
have no problem with requiring root to set up each of the ISPs and
then just have them accessible by users in a specific group.

That's my idea anyway, and I'll probably modify my scripts to work
along these lines unless someone can offer any suggestions on a piece
of software that already works like this, or let me know if someone
else is already working on something like this.

bug in "make-kpkg modules_image"

1998-08-31 Thread Richard E. Hawkins Esq.
It took me a whiel to figure out what was going on here. I was trying
compile a kernel & pcmcia stuff for another computer (using a P2 for a
486).

It seems that "make-kpkg modules_image" runs the pcmcia config script,
with a string of \n's to take the defaults--forcing the package
defaults, rather than the current config. I had to edit the Makefile
to change the default to that it would use the source directory rather
than the currently loaded kernel.

Is this a bug, or is there a way around that I didn't find in the doc's?

That's really strange. The reason I say this is because I've
successfully installed Deb 2.0 via CDROM setup as Master on the
Secondary IDE channel (/dev/hdc). In addition, I haven't had any
problems mounting and unmounting it when needed. I'm using an older
CDROM (4X Mitsumi - I think), but that really shouldn't matter (unless
you've got a pre-ATAPI CDROM). Do you think it might have something

I suppose dd's default blocksize of 512 Byte kills performance on several
CD-Drives.

I use

 dd if=/dev/scd0 of=tmp.iso bs=2k count=$(( `isosize /dev/scd0` / 2048 ))

which is reasonable fast (and avoids reading the unreadable sectors at the
end)

AGP Video Cards?

1998-08-31 Thread pedro . i . sanchez
I'm trying to get a good AGP video card to work with Debian 2.0. Looking at the
list of supported cards in the xf86config utility I see the "matrox Milenium II
(AGP)." However this card seems hard to find now since it's been replaced by
the new one G200. Does anybody know if this new card is supported?

Any advice on any other AGP card?

Thank you,

It does not work even under root. What is the matter?

I have never used it but Win95 has this built in.
Select the following to install the driver.

Start Menu-Setup-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs-Windows Setup-
Communications-Direct Cable Connection.

Is that not what you want?

As a discouraging side note, this is a quote from section 9 of the new
PLIP mini-HOWTO.

Just a guess but it doesn't look like you are telling fetchmail who to
send the remote mail to on the local machine.

>From the fetchmail man page.

Here's what a simple retrieval configuration for a multi-
   drop mailbox looks like:

 poll pop.provider.net:
user maildrop with pass secret1 to golux hurkle=happy snark here

This says that the mailbox of account `maildrop' on the
server is a multi-drop box, and that messages in it should
be parsed for the server user names `golux', `hurkle', and
`snark'. It further specifies that `golux' and `snark'
have the same name on the client as on the server, but
mail for server user `hurkle' should be delivered to
   client user `happy'.

You might also want to check out the fetchmailconfig setup program.

That is (probably) *not* what one wants for a win95 plip connection. From
what I have read, win95's "Direct Cable Connection" must run at *both* ends
of the connection.

I recently received an email forwarded to me from someone who claims to have
successfully made such a connection. It involves a (imho) a rather kludgy

think that I've deleted that particular email, but I have a hardcopy

kernel package

1998-08-31 Thread Kenneth Scharf
When I installed debian 2.0 from CD I was asked what modules I wanted
configured into the kernel. These modules are called out in
/etc/modules. I have rebuilt the kernel using the kernel package
utility. This created a debian kernel-image package which I
installed, thus upgrading my kernel. (neat!) It seems to have done
everything, except modify the /etc/modules file. Is there a utility
that modifies this file to reflect the modules built with the new
kernel, or do I have to do this by hand? (I added module support for
java, minux, etc).

network unreachable

1998-08-31 Thread Richard Robinson
Hi,

I am using 3com 3c905tx with RedHat and although the network card seems to
be "recognized" during installation, the network is unreachable...even the
local network with winNT server.

For example, the response to

ping 204.60.134.10

is "network unreachable"

and the response to

lynx http://204.60.134.10

is "Alert!: unable to connect to remote host"

and

"lynx: Can't access startfile http://204.60.134.10";

where 204.60.134.10 is the nt server on the lan. Please note that the
reponse is similar for remote IP's.

Thanks, Rich

Philip Thiem <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:

I run on a two processor pentium pro machine all of the time - for doing
development, "make -j [ something >1 ]" gives about double compilation
speed, as multiple gcc's get spawned onto the two processors.

Multi-CPU pentium machines (as opposed to PII or PPro) are not supposed to
see as much of a benefit, as the two processors share L2 cache.

Others have pointed out, too, that the 2.1.x performance is supposed to be
much better than 2.0.34. I'm running 2.1.104, and I'd say that I have
noticed a stellar difference. The performance I was used to under 2.0.34
was pretty impressive for the stuff I do, though - for a kernel bound job,
2.1.x might make a big difference.

Hopefully this is a useful answer :-)

Ext2: Superblocks

1998-08-31 Thread dpk
It appears the power outages we experienced last week may have done
some disk damage to our ftp mirror of Debian! It appears I cannot
read the superblock on the ftp drive/partition.

I believe ext2 stores this information elsewhere on the disk and can
fix this by using something other than the default superblock. I have
heard of it on this list, but am having a rough time finding this info
to fix the problem! Can anybody help me out?

Thanks,

One minor note here: I installed

but had to edit the name to

I added a file /etc/init.d/local containing such things as insmod
(actually I used depmod and modprobe) and ran update-rc.d. Maybe you
could do it with /etc/modules, but I haven't tried that.

Compatibility Libs

1998-08-31 Thread Jeremiah Cornelius
I have a question relating to the compatibility libs, and ld
configuration.

I have been VERY pleased with the libc5 compatibility in Hamm!

Unfortunately, I have custody of two RedHat 5.x boxes, which cannot be
migrated in the forseable future.

I would like to copy the directories

/lib/libc5-compat
/usr/lib/libc5-compat

To the RedHat boxes, add the appropriate entries to /etc/ld.so.conf,
and re-run ldconfig.

Will this work?

Is there something I am missing here, that has been "cooked-up" to
maintain parallel libc5/Glibc2 configurations and load-order?

Thanks!

No. There are just the references to the different characters that can be
formed by using compose e.g.

keymaps 0-2,4-6,8-9,12
alt_is_meta
...
compose '`' 'A' to 'À'
compose '`' 'a' to 'à'
...

How do I define the compose key? According to the
Keyboard-and-Console-HOWTO.gz Control-period is the default Compose Key.
That was the case in Debian 1.3.1.

I am using the US keyboard definition. Do I have to change to some
European keyboard?

My .Xdefaults and .Xresource have the same contents:
-
*XmTextField.translations: #override\n\
  osfDelete: delete-next-character()
XTerm*utmpInhibit: false
emacs.font: 7x14
emacs.geometry: 85x30
xpdf.geometry:80x32
pine.geometry: 101x32
xterm.geometry: 101x32
lynx.geometry:101x32k
---

Here is the contents of my /etc/X11/config:
-
run-xconsole
obey-nologin
allow-user-resources
allow-user-modmap
allow-user-xsession
allow-failsafe
#start-xdm
#xdm-start-server
no-xdm-start-server
no-start-xdm

I still seems that X is ignoring it.

Printing to a windows shared printer

1998-08-31 Thread Ian Lynagh

Hi all!

I am having some problems with printing to a windows shared printer
over the network. It is a NEC SuperScript 860.

If I do "lpr -Pnec myfile.txt" then the green light goes
blink-blink...blink-blink...blink-blink...
which means "PCL data left in printer". Pressing the button on the front
makes the text print.

However, if I attempt to print from lyx then I get what looks like
the contents of a dvi to my untrained eye.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

I am using lpr, not lprng.

Here is my /etc/printcap:
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

nec:\
  :lp=/dev/null:sh:\
  :sd=/var/spool/lpd/nec:\
  :if=/usr/sbin/smbprint:
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The local hplj4l works fine.

Here is /usr/sbin/smbprint with a pile of comments removed:

#!/bin/sh -x

logfile=/tmp/smb-print.log

(

echo "print -"
cat

Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance

Debian also loads a "default" keymap during startup. I'm not sure, I
think the 'kbd' package sets this up. Anyway, look in /etc/kbd/ for
another default.map[.gz]. Instead of patching the kernel you can put
your custom defkeymap.map here as default.map[.gz].

NS 4.5 is definitely buggy. I went back to 4.05 (now 4.06) because of
this.

FWIW, have you tried '*VT100*backarrowKey: false' in your Xresources
file? If you have the newer (2.0) version of this file, there is a
section at the top that talks about the backspace key. This probably
only applies to xterm.

You'll find those files in the 'libc6-dev' package.

'depmod -a' does this. IIRC, the make-kpg should do this

When I found the 0.74 version and installed it, I had the same problem.
Don't know exactly what did it, but I started xscanimage as sudo root,
then started Gimp as sudo root, then did 'ln -s /dev/sg0 /dev/sga' and
somewhere along the line it all worked and I can now use the scanner as
a regular user

Worth a try!

This weekend I figured out how to fix it. I had to add the line:
keycode 22 = BackSpace
to my Xmodmap file. When I did a xmodmap -pke to find out if BackSpace
was even defined, It wasn't. So I added it and all is good.

I have Debian 2.0 (fresh off the CD). And I did see the Xresources
information. I tried it out but it didn't seem to do anything. The
Xmodmap seemed to fix everything.

Re: Fetchmail don't work for me !

1998-08-31 Thread Randy Edwards
> all messages are stored in the root account not each recipients.

I've tried umpteen variations in my configurations and I run into the same
thing.
No matter what I do, fetchmail won't store mail in the user's account, only in
root's.

The kludge that I've worked out is to put an individual system crontab entry
for
each user. The crontab points to a small script in the user's home directory
which
runs fetchmail as the individual user. This, of course, requires that each
user has
their own fetchmail config file in their home directory and their own individual
setup. This works for me as I only have a few users on my home box, but would
be a
nightmare in a production machine with lots of users.

I use dselect for upgrades (it is only pointed to the stable tree via
ftp-method). I use apt-get install xyz, if I want packages from slink.
