Mucking with filesystem
Hi! I want to make my current /home/ filesystem bigger to store my ever growing user owned source files. So how can/should I can automount (on boot) another, (previously vfat,) partition under my user's home directory and have my user own it just like the rest of the stuff there? Thanks, Timothy -- E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 30-Aug-98 Time: 20:32:46 This message was sent by XFMail. Powered by GNU/Linux 2.0. --
Linux SMP
I'm wonder, and perhap some you linux buffs could help. HOw great is the performance gain from SMP? I have been debating this with a friend. I know linux has muli-threaded capability, but like the kernal isn't explicitly multithreaded(or is it), yeah you can compile it for multiple processors, and the same with other application without explicitly using the threads library, sort of creating multiple processes.. Are these process indpendent of each other in a way that a noticable benefit would be gained from SMP. I'm new to the detail of SMP so any information would be nice Thanks Philip Thiem [EMAIL PROTECTED]

PCMCIA-CS: configure?
Dear Debian users, I have installed Debian 2.0 successfully, including X. I'd like to install pgplot, tgif, Netscape 4, for which I need an ethernet connection: the former 2 packages are not on the CDs, and the latter requres some archive files to be put on /tmp to work. I have an IBM THinkpad 760CD on which I have been using an Accton Ethernet Card with success in a previous Linux installation (SuSE 4.2, made for me by a person who has left in the meantime). I have installed the pcmcia-cs package: what should be done next? Just edit the pcmcia.connf file? Examples? Thank you. APM support?
I cannot remember having seen any suggestion to include APM support in the kernel during the (successful) installation of Debian 2.0 from the CDs using dselect. Do I really have to load the source file(s) from an FTP site and compile the kernel myself? How do I find out what else has been included as an option in the present kernel, so that I can include it in my next compilation (by the way, the first one in my life)? Thank you. Sendmail and virtualdomains
Hello, today I tried to reconfigure mySendmail 8.8.8 (hamm distribution) to set up some virtualdomains. I followed instructions I've seen at www.sendmail.org/virtual-hosting.html and added line FEATURE(virtusertable, `dbm /etc/virtusertable')dnl to my /etc/mail/sendmail.mc file (at the end of file, to preserve my configuration). Then I run sendmailconfig and Ooops ... get error message "Class dbm not supported" or sth like this. Am I doing sth wrong ? How can I set up virtualhosting properly ? Making the official CD a mirror of Debian's official ftp site would also help (a little) in the release of new versions. And it would also help (a little) new users to get used to the directory structure of the ftp sites.

Network connection
After problems with no network connection from the PCMCIA card (which worked since the beginning), I found out a solution: I issued the command route add -net 129.129.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 dev eth0 Questions: (1) Is this correct (/elegant)? (2) Is this permanent or do I have to reissue the command after each reboot? Thank you and to all who tried to help me a couple of hours ago. Re: Network connection
Hello Remo: Within the /etc/init.d/network file your network route command should be specified ( for your network ). Check this file to make certain that the route arguments are correct. Every time you boot your system, the ifconfig and route directives will be issued based on the contents of the network file. Otherwise you will have to manually issue this route command every time you boot your system. Hi, Let me guess.. you start x as normal user (or login with xdm as user) and then you su to root and try to run X11 programs as root on the display that is owned by the user? That won't work. You'll have to do this: $ su - password: # export $DISPLAY=:0 # export $XAUTHORITY=/home/user/.Xauthority # some-xclientprog & # Substitute the right username for user in the line above. Only root can do this, because root can read anybody's files, even if the files are mode 600 (shows up in "ls -l" as r-- - readable only for the owner of the files.) Alternatively, install ssh. Ssh (among other things) does connection forwarding for xclients.) With ssh it would work like this: $ ssh -l root localhost password: # some-xclientprog & # Cheers, Joost

Try "linux for dummies" or "unix for dummies." Despite the silly title, they might actually be quite useful if you're totally new to unix. If you are already familiar with msdos, then the dos2unix-HOWTO might be what you need. I'll explain below where to get HOWTO's You should certainly look at http://sunsite.unc.edu/LDP There, you'll find a lot of good documentation. "Running Linux" for example is a book that you can buy in the bookstore or download from sunsite. There are a couple more of these books downloadable from the net. BTW, it doesn't hurt to buy one, it reads a lot more comfortable. Also on sunsite you'll find a myriad of HOWTO's. You can actually install them on your own computer as a debian package. Look for the doc-linux-text and doc-linux-html packages on your cd. It will install in /usr/doc/HOWTO. Oh, did I tell you yet that all debian packages install some documentation in /usr/doc/ ? Last but not least there are the manpages. You seem to have missed those. In fact, the unix system is fairly well documented overall, compared to msdos. Try "man man" and "man bash" for starters. You can find what manpages package "foo" contains by typing "dpkg -L foo | grep man" Besides man pages, there are also a lot of "info" pages on your system. Those often provide even more extensive forms of documentation, but the info browser program is a bit difficult to learn. You should definately install the dwww package on your system. When you do that, you can read the documentation on your system with your favorite webbrowser. Just point it at http://localhost/dwww > Please send me some info on the basic commands. When I got started with linux, I read a whole lot of HOWTO's and bought some books. Particularly useful are "Learning the bash shell," "Linux in a nutshell," "Running Linux" and "The Linux network administrator's guide." > how I can connect to internet using Linux. I know there is a isapnp > utility and it is supposed to configure my PnP Hardware using the > isapnp.conf file (which is a dump from the isapnpdump file). First install the isapnptools package. Then read the pnpdump and isapnp manpages (if I remember correctly.) Then configure /etc/isapnp.conf. Yes, I know it's hard, but that's because plug-'n-pray just plain sucks. borrow a friend's external modem if you're getting short on hair to pull out :-) Okay, when you know for certain that the modem works now (you can test it with the minicom program in the package with the same name) it is finally time to set up ppp. Just type "pppconfig" (as root of course, and you must have pppconfig installed, type "dpkg -s pppconfig to check that.) Pppconfig makes internet easy. > Anyhow, the problem is the diald or the pppd. Don't try diald until you figure out ppp in the first place. Cheers, Joost

Do you *really* need smail's bangpath handling? With this, I mean using the uucp maps etc. to figure out the correct routing etc. If all you have is a number of uucp neighbours with which you have to exchange email, exim is fully up to the task, given a couple of changes to the exim.conf file. I use exim with uucp on two debian systems. These are globally the changes needed: In the global part: trusted_users = mail:uucp for receiving mail correctly. In the transports section: uucp: driver = pipe user = nobody command = "/usr/bin/uux -r - $host!rmail ${local_part}" return_fail_output = true In the routers section, below any possible smtp entries: xs4all: driver = domainlist transport = uucp route_list = "xs4all.nl xs4all" I only want to send emails over the uucp link if they're destined for the xs4all.nl domain, which explains the route_list. However, "transport = uucp" works fine for the smarthost and other entries as well. Furthermore a rewrite rule may be necessary if your uucp partner sends mail to a bang path. I don't need that with xs4all, but I can look it up on the other system (not local for me at the moment) if necessary. Note that other people's concerns for vim to do the "safe" thing (i.e. leave the backups until you know how vim works) is bogus, as I've been using vim for at least 5 years (hmmm, version 1.27) and "knew" that vim doesn't leave backups. Otherwise, if backups are preferred, put them somewhere all together like /tmp so that the system isn't littered with these ~ files everywhere. Now to remove the "set tw=78" which causes gratuitious line wraps, very painful when editing e.g. a shell script. Rely on the autocommands to turn this feature on for emails etc, that works fine! Also, put "set directory=~/tmp,/var/tmp,/tmp,.". This causes the "swap file" (where the backup stuff is kept if something happens in the middle of an edit session) to be put in one of those directories, the first if possible etc. That prevents those pesky ".swp" files appearing in the current directory, which screw up your terminal when you do "grep bla *" due to control characters in the swap file being printed. In fact, at one time in Vim development, the current directory was the default, until people protested for the reasons I listed above. Now debian's vim maintainer restored the old problems :-( The first thing I do on a new debian installation is edit /etc/vimrc :-( The second thing is 'rm /etc/vimrc~' ... Rider I congratulate you on having successfully installed the Debian GNU/Linux system. You need to read an introductory Unix book, such as O'reilly's "Learning the UNIX Operating System" or one of Sobel's books such as Hands On Linux series books from AWL. YOu need to learn a basic text command line set for getting around UNIX or Linux. Write me directly, not on the list, and I will send you some of the material I give my students. There are Linux web pages that are tutorial in nature, I'm sure that someone on this list will mention the URLs. A remark or two: Linux is just a free re implementation of the ideas and ideals of the Unix(tm) operating system by a bunch of wonderful people. It is better than Lose 95 or Lose NT in part because it is free, in part because it is very much more robust than M$ operating systems. It is not nearly as satisfactory from the point of view of Ms Average user because it requires some technical knowledge to use, and there really are no "killer (desktop) applications" yet. But for software development, web hosting, or teaching computer science, there is no better enviroment. --David Teague [EMAIL PROTECTED] --- LINUX: the FREE 32 bit OS for [3456]86 PC's available NOW! I could | hack out a script that would munge the relevant files into submission, but | a real solution must be scalable and compatible with everything elses that | needs those files. Exactly! Like I said, I have a script, and it works fine, but it's hardly a general solution and almost certainly wouldn't suit the needs of others. I would think something along the lines of a /etc/dialups directory with subdirectories for each ISP that contains the necessary files. So, say I have 3 ISP's named, Dog_Slow, Too_Expensive, Work, then I'd have a directory structure like: /etc/dialups Dog_Slow/ etc/resolv.conf etc/hosts etc/smail/routers etc/smail/config Too_Expensive/ etc/resolv.conf etc/hosts etc/smail/routers etc/smail/config Work/ etc/resolv.conf etc/hosts etc/smail/routers etc/smail/config Now the script, or program, that does the setup for a specific ISP just needs to traverse the entire directory tree for that ISP and copy the files to the necessary system directory before initiating the connection to the ISP. It's easy to add and remove files from the setup by merely creating them in the proper location under the /etc/dialups/ directory structure. The tricky bit is that some of them may require that daemons be restarted, sendmail comes to mind, although I don't use that on my Debian systems, and/or other actions besides simple file copies. That's half the battle, then you need a nice interface to generate these files automatically and copy them to their respective locations before connecting to the desired ISP. And all of this needs to be doable by a user in the proper group, as well as root. Personally I'd have no problem with requiring root to set up each of the ISPs and then just have them accessible by users in a specific group. That's my idea anyway, and I'll probably modify my scripts to work along these lines unless someone can offer any suggestions on a piece of software that already works like this, or let me know if someone else is already working on something like this. bug in "make-kpkg modules_image"
It took me a whiel to figure out what was going on here. I was trying compile a kernel & pcmcia stuff for another computer (using a P2 for a 486). It seems that "make-kpkg modules_image" runs the pcmcia config script, with a string of \n's to take the defaults--forcing the package defaults, rather than the current config. I had to edit the Makefile to change the default to that it would use the source directory rather than the currently loaded kernel. Is this a bug, or is there a way around that I didn't find in the doc's? rick - - -- These opinions will not be those of ISU until it pays my retainer. - --- End of Unsent Draft --- End of Forwarded Message -- These opinions will not be those of ISU until it pays my retainer.

When I installed debian 2.0 from CD I was asked what modules I wanted configured into the kernel. These modules are called out in /etc/modules. I have rebuilt the kernel using the kernel package utility. This created a debian kernel-image package which I installed, thus upgrading my kernel. (neat!) Is there something I am missing here, that has been "cooked-up" to maintain parallel libc5/Glibc2 configurations and load-order? Printing to a windows shared printer
Hi all! I am having some problems with printing to a windows shared printer over the network. It is a NEC SuperScript 860. If I do "lpr -Pnec myfile.txt" then the green light goes blink-blink...blink-blink...blink-blink... which means "PCL data left in printer". Pressing the button on the front makes the text print. However, if I attempt to print from lyx then I get what looks like the contents of a dvi to my untrained eye. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I am using lpr, not lprng. Here is my /etc/printcap: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- lp|lj|hplj4l|HP Laserjet 4L:\ :lp=/dev/lp1:sd=/var/spool/lpd/hplj4l:\ :sh:pw#80:pl#72:px#1440:mx#0:\ :if=/etc/magicfilter/ljet4l-filter:\ :af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs: nec:\ :lp=/dev/null:sh:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/nec:\ :if=/usr/sbin/smbprint: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The local hplj4l works fine. Re: Fetchmail don't work for me !
> all messages are stored in the root account not each recipients. I've tried umpteen variations in my configurations and I run into the same thing. No matter what I do, fetchmail won't store mail in the user's account, only in root's. The kludge that I've worked out is to put an individual system crontab entry for each user. The crontab points to a small script in the user's home directory which runs fetchmail as the individual user. This, of course, requires that each user has their own fetchmail config file in their home directory and their own individual setup. This works for me as I only have a few users on my home box, but would be a nightmare in a production machine with lots of users. -- Regards,| Debian GNU/ __ o http://www.debian.org . |/ / _ _ _ _ _ __ __ Randy | / /__ / / / \// //_// \ \/ / ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) | // /_/ /_/\/ /___/ /_/\_\ http://www.golgotha.net | ...because lockups are for convicts...
