Not with dselect. From a command line, use dpkg -S, thus:
$ dpkg -S rpc.bootparamd
netstd: /usr/man/man8/rpc.bootparamd.8.gz
netstd: /usr/sbin/rpc.bootparamd

That doesn't appear to be true with the netstd package that I retrieved
when I installed 1.3.1. dpkg -L netstd doesn't show any signs of
rpc.bootparamd. Just so we're on the same page, I've got netstd-2.13-1
installed here, and I've not seen a message from dselect saying that a
newer version is available.

Actually, what I was hoping for was an information screen which would show
the contents of the highlighted package _which isn't installed yet_.

In this case, I knew the executable that I needed, but didn't have a clue
which package I needed to grab in order to get that executable. This is a
bit of a frustrating situation as you're basically forced to try and guess
which package might contain the file you want (ie: thinking logically,
netboot or nfsroot might both possibly contain that file -- download both
and you've wasted 600k of transfers because neither one of them are
appropriate).

Now, I realize that complete contents lists for each package, contained in
the Packages.stable/Packages.contrib/etc would increase their sizes by
huge amounts, and I'm not advocating that a change to include them occur.
Just trying to extract a little more wisdom out of longer-term Debian
users than myself as to whether what I was trying to accomplish (finding
the package which contained rpc.bootparamd) could have been done more
easily than jumping on IRC and asking around.

Despite all this, I've yet to find the appropriate package. I've since
jumped over to sunsite and grabbed the NetKit-rpc.bootparamd package from
there and I'm just installing it by hand.

Oops, maybe bootpd is a different protocol from rpc.bootparamd.

There's a Contents and Contents.gz file in the distribution that provides a
mapping from file names to the package containing them. This supplements
the Packages file.

Modem Test?

Hi

I've been trying to connect through my schools dial up system for sometime
now with no luck. I'm starting to think that my modem is not configured
correctly. I think that my modem is on /dev/tty0. I deleted the device
/dev/modem that present initially and made a new symbolic from /dev/tty0

is indeed the correct device driver?

Have you tried something like minicom. It just dials your modem but is
nice for doing some diagnostics. You can tell it to use either
/dev/tty?? or /dev/modem. You could also tell your ppp dialer to use a
tty instead of modem. /dev/modem is just a convenience -- not a
requirement.

I think you want /dev/ttyS0 - that's a serial device.
I believe /dev/tty0 would be one of your consoles, which you don't want.

Re: Modem Test?

1997-08-25 Thread Heikki Vatiainen
Hi,

For the starters you could try /dev/ttyS0 instead of /dev/tty0. If
/dev/ttyS0 doesn't work try ttyS1-ttyS3. The /dev/ttyS0 through /dev/ttyS3
are the com devices in Linux.

For testing you could try minicom (comm/minicom_1.75-2.deb in stable) and
issue some AT commands (ATI4 might output some info about the modem) to
see if the modem responds.

I hope this helps.

Using ln -s you do specify the text that is stored in the file record
in the directory.

So ln -s /etc/X11/XF86Config debian/tmp/this/link/is/stupid

will create a link:

debian/tmp/this/link/is/stupid -> /etc/X11/XF86Config

(at least it should...)

In your example you could also use a relative linkt ../../etc/X11...

Problems with bash 2.01

1997-08-25 Thread Travis Cole

I recently downloaded the source for bash2.01 from sunsite and compiled it my
self. I copied the bash executable to /bin, being sure to backup the old
executable. Now most things seem to work fine. I had read the reason helper
apps don't work with Netscape was a bug in bash 2.0. I can now call Real Audio
Player from Netscape with no problems.

But I am having one really annoying problem. In Netscape and XFMail the
backspace key now works as delete. It deletes the character to the right of the
cursor. I am running Debian 1.3.1 with the key mappings unmodified. In my
xterms and at the console the backspace key works correctly. In XFMail it
actually works correctly in the subject and to fields but not in the composition
window.

I know this is caused by bash because I can change back to the old executable
and the backspace key works correctly.

Can any one help?

Also is there going to be a stable and safe way to upgrade to bash 2.01 (by way
of a deb package) any time soon? Of is there already and I don't know about it?
I would like to install as few programs from unstable as possible.

Thanks.

I'm happy to hear. We need both, people taking over maintenance of
existing but orphaned packages as well as people who are in the need
of some packages we actually don't have included for some reason.

Please go into the doc directory on your favourite Debian mirror
and take a look inside of the directory package-developer. There
are lots of files which contain most of the information that new
maintainers need.

Best regards,

Regardless of the status of libc6, the change over to 1.3.x or 1.3 Rev
x, the desire to keep changes to the stable tree to a minimum, or
whatever, this needs to be upgraded NOW. I have had a few other apps
crap out on this bash 2.0 bug and since the Debian system lives and
dies by bash it needs to be fixed A.S.A.P. by the maintainer, and or
the development team, not kind Jens who got sick of it enough to
download the source.

Yes, this is what I usually hear about most compilers. P5 Code runs as
fast or faster on 486's. What GCC needs is a to have the 486 generator
perform pentium optimizations and not use pentium/386 instructions. Then
we could compile everything for this. The speed hit on a pentium would
drop on alot of apps and the 486/386 would not have any hit..

I wonder what instructions gcc uses on the 586, I don't recall seeing that
many usefull ones for general purpose stuff..

Coincidentally, earlier today I uploaded a .deb of PPPupd which you may
find useful. PPPupd is a simple daemon which as the name suggests was
designed for keeping a PPP connection alive. It pings a host you specify
at regular intervals (every minute by default.) The way I packaged it,
PPPupd runs pon and poff to automatically to bring back a disconnected
PPPxonnection. But it is very configurable. You could use it to ping the
other end of your ethernet connection and if the ping fails, it could run
a script that starts up diald. When the ethernet connection comes back
up, it would kill diald.

As I said I just uploaded it today so it will be a short while before it
shows up on mirrors. In the mean time you can get the .deb and source
from http://www.braincells.com/pub/debian/Local .

Probably outside hosts have no route to you. Prognet.com may have to install
a route for you, or you may have to use their proxy for FTP and their mail
forwarder to get your mail through their firewall.

Try "traceroute" to your system from outside, and see how far it gets.
