Have you tried something like minicom. It just dials your modem but is nice for doing some diagnostics. You can tell it to use either /dev/tty?? or /dev/modem. You could also tell your ppp dialer to use a tty instead of modem. /dev/modem is just a convenience -- not a requirement.
