2.4.7, motorola powerstack, NCR825, SCSI timeouts...
hi, I can't seem to get 2.4 kernels to run reliably on my PReP moto powerstack/riscPC box with an NCR825 wide controller. it boots up, goes thru the init scripts, but gets into SCSI timeouts before it even manages to bring up a login prompt -- SCSI timeouts on all three disks (all wide), for read and write commands. has anybody seen this, or been successful with a similiar setup? ciao, cm. -- Hat irgendwer schlechte Schwingungen in seiner globalen Eierkuchen-Aura bekommen weil man ihm gesagt hat er soll bitte nicht andauernd mit Vollquotes in 10 Gruppen gleichzeitig crossposten? What I do is first, dd the zImage.prep to a floppy and boot from that one (PBOOT 1 0 in the ROM monitor) to test it, and if it's OK, it goes to the boot partition via dd. (but I sure would like to see something lilo-like for PReP boxen) ciao, cm. -- ** christian mock in vienna, austria -- http://www.tahina.priv.at/~cm/ Vielleicht ist es aber auch nur einfach Zeit, dem Wolfi wieder den root-Account wegzunehmen. in.rshd vanished, and sound on powerstack
hi, I noticed that in.rshd vanished from the last update of whatever package it's supposed to be in... (well, switching to ssh now). and another thing: is anyone using sound on a motorola powerstack/riscpc machine (CS4231A) with 2.2.12? I'm seeing the effect that /dev/dsp takes 32bit per sample instead of 16, so sound plays at 2x the speed... ciao, cm. -- christian mock in vienna, austria -- http://www.tahina.priv.at/~cm/ VIBE!AT http://www.vibe.at/ ** wir sind nicht zum spass hier. kein urlaub in kaernten!

I chased that one down in my setup, it was debconf deciding to use whiptail, which didn't run (some library problem, IIRC). Setting the environment variable DEBIAN_FRONTEND to text did help... I tried playing sound on my riscpc (CS4231), and finally found out that the sound driver seems to consume 32bit instead of 16bit per step of data -- doubling up the data made the sound play at the right speed, and sound vaguely useable. I think it was on 2.2.12, and my mail from back then must be in the archives of this list. no solution, sorry. ciao, cm. -- christian mock in vienna, austria -- http://www.tahina.priv.at/~cm/ VIBE!AT http://www.vibe.at/ ** wir sind nicht zum spass hier. pgpXtWkxTf2kq.pgp Description: PGP signature

Has anyone got an idea what could be wrong? just a data point: on my motorola blackhawk boxen (which are also PReP), the SYM53C8XX driver panics the kernel at boot time when there are more than 32 (or was it 64?) megs of RAM in the machine; this was with 2_4_ppc_devel from the bitkeeper repository. Generally, I've been unable to get SCSI going reliably with all the 2.4 series -- at the best, it's hanging after some 10 minutes of uptime with SCSI timeouts. OTOH, a co-worker had success with a stock 2.4.17 on his blackhawk box. HTH, cm. -- Actually, I found New Zealanders to be the most akin to Canadians.
