Which settings for Accel on iMac?

2001-04-16 Thread Niklaus Giger
I am running XF 4.0.2 on my iMac (an early model).

I had to set the following option in XFConfig-4
  Option "Noaccel"
as the fonts were right/left reversed and very illisible.

Here the output of dmesg
atyfb: using auxiliary register aperture
atyfb: 3D RAGE PRO (PQFP, PCI) [0x4750 rev 0x7c] 6M SGRAM, 14.31818 MHz XTAL,
230 MHz PLL, 100 Mhz MCLK
atyfb: monitor sense=73f, mode 6
Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 128x48
fb0: ATY Mach64 frame buffer device on PCI

I just upgraded my kernel to to
Linux iMac 2.4.4-pre1 #1 Mon Apr 16 19:26:42 CEST 2001 ppc unknown

Does anybody have a better suggestion for the Accel-Option?

Thanks in advance

Me too had no problems migrating from a PowerBook G4 to MacMiniIntel. Half a
year ago installation was a little bit tricky, but I think nowadays it does
not present any major obstacle. (But I think that you still need to install
efi before trying to use the a recent build of the Debian CDs.)

The internal speakers do not work. Try an external one. Also check whether
dmasound_pmac is loaded as module.

I am running a kernel 2.4.18-newpmac. I think sound does not work with a 2.20
kernel.

Hope this helps.

What do you mean exactly? I am using xmms. I put the output level to max. Now
I can hear the sound perfectly on my external speakers. After having removed
the output jac I do not hear any sound from the internal speaker.

Sorry for answering so late, but I did not have any time to test it before.
I just finished my test on my PowerMac blue/white.

My testmachine as per /proc/cpuinfo was a PowerMac1,1; 66 (Blue&White G3).

I burned the CD from Oktober third.
Booting was not problem. I even did a full install, as I wanted to upgrade my
son's machine to the actual GNU/Debian testing.

As my wife's Pismo PowerBook has a broken CD-ROM drive I used the netboot
vmlinux and initrd.gz from
http://people.debian.org/~luther/d-i/images/daily/powerpc/netboot/
(as per October 4), modified my yaboot.conf a little bit and voila I got to
the first language selection prompt.
/proc/cpuinfo gives PowerBook3,1.

Thanks a lot for your work!

I tried netbooting on a Pismo Powerbook G3 and it failed. It showed:
Elf32 kernel loaded...
Loading ramdisk...
method 'load' failed 0300
ramdisk load failed!

Is the ramdisk to big?
I uses your vmlinux/initrd.gz as of November 8

Same picture trying the netboot on a PowerMac B/W.

On the PowerMac B/W I have a working CD drive and the MiniISO started up,
loading the kernel and went into the grafical mode but has misconfigured
something as I see only small square in the middle of a blue screen. Do you
want a picture of it?

Hi

I pulled in the source from CVS. It compiled, installed everything fine. But
after changing the OF boot device to grub I only got the following output:
Welcome to GRUB!_
- _
Decrementer exception at %SRR0: %SRR1: 00083030

After resetting the boot device to yaboot, yabout couldn't load the linux
image saying "CLAIM failed". After a reboot yaboot had no more problems.

After that I just pulled in your tarball and rebuilt Grub2 again. Same
behaviour as CVS.

My machine is a PowerBook PowerBook5,2, G4 1 GHz. Once GRUB is boot my
Powerbook I could offer you to test also my other machines:
- PowerMac G3 blue/white
- PowerBook G3 400 MHz
- iMac
And may be even on my main server a Pegasos I.

Best regards, keep going with your efforts!

Your workaround was not necessary.

The main problem was, that the internal speakers are not
supported on Blue&White GS. I found this information on
http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/olh_ppc_sound.html

I attached external speakers and now everything works fine.

I boot directly into Debian/GNU/Linux.

Thank you very much for your help.

Thank you for the tip. I had the same problem.

But I use keycode 116 = Mode_switch to use my right
apple-key like AltGr on IBM-PC-keyboard.

I have a external USB Apple extended keyboard (which show
us up like input1: Alps Electric?M2452 M2452 on usb1:6.0 in
dmesg output).

Curiously enough I only have to call this xmodmap if I am
using KDE, not in a gnome-session. I do not know what is
going on there. In both session I set the keyboard type to
Swiss German.

If you I knew what package is at fault I would post a bug
report ...

I cannot comment on Japanese. But as my wife is from Korea we often do a
smilar trick for e.g. a konquerer. My scripts looks like:

It tells the X server that it should use kinput2 as its Input Manager.
However, if you are using KDE your .xinitrc will not be executed. So in my
case I added the corresponding entry for AMI in my script.

Hope that helps.

Do you have openoffice.org-crashrep installed?

On my system openoffice.org-bin 1.1.3-1 is installed, which should be the
latest release in testing. And it works okay on my PowerBook Alu G4.

You probably will have more luck on the following list for embedded PowerPCs
http://ozlabs.org/pipermail/linuxppc-embedded/ or the u-boot.sf.net

I had similar problems. So I remebered the following thread:

How to install Debian Sarge on pegasos?

2004-09-03 Thread Niklaus Giger
Hi

I cannot find any recent pointer on howto install Debian Sarge on a newly
acquired Pegasos-1 board.

I managed to install gentoo on it, but would like to install Debian as I am
far more familiar with it.

I tried the
http://people.debian.org/~luther/pegasos/older/pegasos1/pegasos_installer but
it wouldn't even boot.

Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

What is the status now? The size of vmlinuz-chrp.initrd has not gone down and
the image of 06.09.2004 didn't boot.

Also I think you may have a problemm with rsyncing as I find directories like

Re: Search for patched yaboot testers ...

2004-11-05 Thread Niklaus Giger
Hi

I have the following four systems where I could test the patches.
PowerBook Alu 1 GHz 15"
PowerBook Pismo G3 400 Mhz
PowerMac G3 blue/white
Pegasos I (Here I never managed to install a stock Debian kernel, I have a
custom compiled kernel based on the Gentoo 2.6.8-pegasos-r2, then used a
chroot to install a minimal Debian system and managed to install Debian on
it. But the way was quite complicated). When I tried 10 days ago to boot your
kernel from
http://people.debian.org/%7Eluther/d-i/images/daily/powerpc/cdrom-minimal/2.4/vmlinuz-chrp.initrd
I was unable to boot into it.

What are the steps which you would like to test? E.g. on each system I have
one spare partition but I cannot afford to format the whole disk. I have
however a external FireWire-HD which I could wipe out each time.
Did you apply the patch for an external firewire
http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2004/11/msg00056.html ?

Is it sufficient to just install the minimal Debian system?

Do I have to write a install report for each installation for each machine?

Can you tell me when your modified d-i-isos are available?

Best regards

You cannot run showkey under X (xterm, konsole) whatsoever. If you change to a
virtual console by pressing -- you may use showkey.
In a konsole, xterm window use xev from the package xbase-clients

Hope this helps

Can you tell me the baudrate/parity etc for the serial console. I tried

I was not much more successfull. I have only the following output in my
minicom window
Ø..ÿ

I still have monitor, mouse and keyboard attached.

"Ø." comes before the of prompt shows up
After entering
/cd PEGASOS1.;1 console=ttyS01,115200n8
I get the second "." on my minicom console.
After the "return 0 from prom_init" I get the rest
".ÿ"

I think I have also a HW problem as my serial communication between the
pegasos I (kernel 2.6.8) to my powerbook only work in the direction Pegasos->
Powerbook but not the other way round. But I could establish using picocom on
both side a connect with 115200 bauds. I will try to test with another USB ->
serial converter next week.

Re: 2.6 kernel-image packages

2004-05-01 Thread Niklaus Giger
Hi

Thanks for your great work. I just downloaded and installed it on my Powerbook
1 GHz Alu. It works fine (at least for 15 minutes).
Sound does not work (but didn't before neither).

Just some nitpicking about the NEWS.Debian.gz:
- Consider renaming it NEWS.Debian.powerpc.gz to mark it as PowerPC specific.
Or symlink it it NEWS.powerpc.
- Tell how to remake the ramdisk. (I uninstalled and reeinstalled the
kernel-image)
- Tell which hotplug agents are supported? Tell which packages are to
install. e.g. apt-get install hotplug. But as I had hotplug installed I
progressed without to much hesitation.
- Why do you not install a dependency for one of the supported hotplug agents?

Best regards
