Re: wanted: old G5 hardware for use on the ppc64 port
Hello Clemens, aside from the RAM your system is still a nice one for these type of machines, be aware you could still get quite a lot on ebay for it, the other day I saw a G4 iMac with 1.6 GhZ go away for just under 60 Euro tho (usually those go for around 100-120), yours is a much nicer one, BUT if you're still able and interested to give it away for testing I would be interested and I'm located in Germany as well. Sadly my test system, a G4 ibook, died about a month ago, so that was is for me. Some months earlier I already had asked around for ppc test hardware on the lubuntu qa list to no avail: https://lists.launchpad.net/lubuntu-qa/msg04763.html Grüße Boris Clemens Dürrschmidt schrieb am Di., 3. Re: wanted: old G5 hardware for use on the ppc64 port
Hello Clemens, I must clarify I'm not a developer, I am however part of the Lubuntu QA Team and as you have noticed modern distros face various issues on ppc macs. You often need to do extensive research on workarounds to get things to a more useable state which usually makes things too much of a hassle for the endusers, especially without knowledge on Linux or more general of things all around IT, which is also why many Macs get thrown out when they would not have to be and can still function very well on a modern OS. This is exactly why and where testing is needed and the hardware pool for that sadly is quite small and that's where your Mac would come in, more specifically Lubuntu testing, bug hunting, initiating contact with actual devs on issues (ppl dont get payed any more to support our loved but old Macs so we basically get fixes more often on the side, other more modern ppc systems keep ppc developement alive) and possible solutions, workaround documentation as Lubuntu still supports ppc as a community effort and a lot of work is still to be done to make it more useable out of the box for the enduser so that many more Macs will get to see many more years of happy usage in the future. :) So if that still would fit your goal, just shoot me a message on here after which I would contact you privately regarding shipping. Best regards, viele Grüße boris Clemens Dürrschmidt schrieb am Di., 3. Re: wanted: old G5 (Nvidia FX5200 AGP nouveau)
Heya guys, I also would like to thank Clemens Duerrschmidt again for his kind donation of his G5 PowerMac9,1 (single core G5, 1.8 GhZ, 600 MhZ fsb, AGP variant). :) It's already well put to testing, the situation with the Nvidia FX 5200 AGP card is quite messy however, there are multiple bug reports going back many years but aside from basically giving up on any hardware accel features since KMS not much has come up it seems. While in general it might be able to work, workarounds for Nouveau on ppc and the FX 5200 AGP and similar nvidia cards are not too well documented it seems and ppl understandably moved on, also some later/ beefier G5 systems with pcie cards make it easier to switch to more easily maintainable GPU solutions (eg. AMD/ ATI) but of course that is not the goal here, I will look further into it but if you got any leads feel free to share, thx! best regards, grüße boris Konstantinos Margaritis schrieb am Mo., 9. Check this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2209340&page=7 You will need the sound hardware id's, they were listed in one of the related bug reports but I do not have the correct link at hand right now. Hello Peter, amazing thx for pointing this out, we need to preserve and document this information as detailed as possible. Based on the details you mentioned someone could add information to the ppc faq and known issues/ workaround intructions, but it might be best if you did it yourself, seeing as you came up with the workaround and know the details behind it and likely could describe things more thoroughly. Also a bug report on it could help, always good to know whats causing issues and where exactly so it may be fixed at a later time. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCKnownIssues (should absolutely be in here) https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ (could be added in here as well but this page is a lot less recent and not as helpful) Grüße boris Am 29.06.2015 08:06 schrieb "Peter Saisanas" : > Hi, > > > > I also have a Powermac G5 Quad and tried with both the Geforce 6600 and > Quadro FX4500 video cards and I have successfully gotten it up and running > using the nouveau driver along with 2D acceleration on the XOrg desktop. Sounds like a plan! Well I have good experience with google drive's file hosting, seems to work well, easy to use, reliable, for smaller projects their free hosting should suffice so for a fairly small crowd like ours it's plenty I guess. I think we could count on files staying available there. Other hosting options that might be useable are dropbox (which until recenlty still had a ppc OSX client (not that it's really needed), or mega.nz, the latter tho insists on writing files from JavaScript directly to disk which causes issues in every browser other than chrome (certainly problematic on older ppc macs where really mostly firefox is an option https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=832732 even tho this says it's fixed), so mega likely would be ill advised for our usage scenario. 2015-06-29 12:59 GMT+02:00 Boris Reinhard : > Sounds like a plan! > > Well I have good experience with google drive's file hosting, seems to > work well, easy to use, reliable, for smaller projects their free hosting > should suffice so for a fairly small crowd like ours it's plenty I guess. > > I think we could count on files staying available there. > Am 29.06.2015 12:36 schrieb "Peter Saisanas" : > >> I agree Boris. >> In my opinion, i think it is best to have something running out of the >> box for users to have working with little effort to keep interest alive in >> the platform. >> >> On my dev drive currently i am building a deb package of the latest 3.18 >> kernel. Re: Debian 8 on Late 2005 G5, Graphics Issues
Peter I would suggest opening a topic over here: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=328 there you would get attention of enthusiasts and hardware owners a like. There are also some Amiga folks around that might be interested to test on their compatible hardware. If you do make sure the topic is exact and catchy, something like nouveau 3d accel G5 fix or some such. Also a new message on the devel mailing list more of interest to kernel devs and more technical/ possibly linking to an existing or newly created bug report might also gather more attention on the dev side of things.
