Help: Logging in to virtual terminal
Hi, I'm trying to set up Debian on my PowerBook G4, but can't log into a virtual terminal. The X settings aren't correct, so I'd like to drop into the console to edit XF86Config-4. I'm getting a virtual terminal login, but when I log in, it hangs before giving me a prompt. How can I get the bash shell prompt? Help: Virtual Terminal Woes
I'm still unable to log into a virtual terminal on my PowerBook. After setting up Debian, the "Enjoy..." prompt was displayed. I selected OK, and instead of giving me a prompt, the machine just sits there. Similarly, if I switch to a virtual terminal, I can log in, but then the system just sits doing nothing. There must be something I need to be doing as this is a complete plain vanilla installation with nothing changed. I selected the [*] Desktop Environment, but nothing else. Any ideas would be great, it's a real pain!! Cheers, Ben -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Wrong permission for '/dev/pmu'
When starting GNOME on my PowerBook, I'm getting a pop-up complaining about the wrong permission for /dev/pmu. I've found a post about it here: http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2005/01/msg00235.html ...and added: pmu:root:video:0660 to /etc/udev/permissions.d/udev.permissions ...but the problem still exists. I've been reading a little about it, and it seems that there may be a patch to stop the dialog from popping up, and some discussion as to if it's the right thing to be doing anyway. Is there anything I can do to rectify the problem? Cheers, Ben -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Which Kernel for Airport Support?
Hi, I'm currently using kernel 2.6.8-powerpc after a vanilla install of Debian. Is this a workable kernel to support the Airport adapter, or should I go with Ben Herrenschmidt's 2.4 kernel from penguinppc.org? Sorry for the plethora of wi-fi related posts; but I just have one question. Which adapter, either USB or cardbus can I get "on the high-street" that will work with my powerpc? Silent ALSA
From rom a fresh install of Debian, my GNOME volume control applet was set to volume off, and no sound would be made while playing CDs etc. If I adjusted the volume, it would shoot back down to zero as soon as I release the slider. I've installed ALSA, and ran alsaconf which has found my powermac soundcard and configured it. I can now adjust the sound, but there is nothing audible when I play anything. Is there a method of using the powerpc kernel patch (kernel-patch-powerpc-2.6.8-2.6.8) to patch the kernel before building. I was guessing that I can create the .config file from the patch package (from the kernel-patch-powerpc-2.6.8-2.6.8/config directory, running make powerpc and copying the .config file to the kernel source dir), but as for the kernel-patch-powerpc-2.6.8-2.6.8/debian directory in the patch directory - I have no idea. It has the contents: build-files control-official.m4 flavour-power3-smp flavours changelog control.stub flavour-power4 post-install control copyrightflavour-power4-smp README.kernel-build control-dummy.m4 examples flavour-powerpc README.kernel-image control-image.m4 flavour-power3 flavour-powerpc-smp rules I guess I need to work out what the procedure is before the make-kpkg command is run, i.e. how to install the kernel source and use the patch process. I'm looking to build a direct replica of the 2.6.8-powerpc kernel to install. Is there a Debian way to uninstall a custom kernel and return the "old" boot image to the "Linux" boot image. I've been looking for howtos that document the entire procedure, but can only find generic ones. Even the powerpc installation process only covers the actual building of the kernel, not the obtaining and preparing. Upgrade to Unstable: Problems with USB Wifi Adapter
I've just upgraded to sid, but my D-Link DWL-122 USB wifi adapter has stopped working as it was under sarge. When I plug the device in, /var/log/messages shows it's loading the prism2_usb module. I still have alias wlan0 prism2_usb in my modules, but it's no longer associating with the network automatically. If I try ifup wlan0, I get: Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.
