Unfortunately the LGPLed swf player doesn't seem to be actively
developed these days. Question is if we could put some effort into
reviving the project. Is there anybody around who knows a bit about
flash programming? Would be really nice to improve the library a bit...

Touchpad control on a PowerBook

2004-11-01 Thread Erik Chakravarty
Can anybody think of a way to disable the touchpad temporarily (without
restarting X)?

The touchpad is very sensitive under Linux it seems and keeps jumping
around documents whilst I'm typing if I accidentally brush close to it.

Ideally I'd like to map a script to switch the pad off to the Eject key,
then when I hit it again the touchpad is reenabled. Is this possible
with pbbuttonsd?

Thanks

bk 2.6.10-rc1 won't boot on iBook/M3

2004-11-01 Thread Eric Lemoine
Current ppc.bkbits.net/linuxppc-2.5 BK kernel (2.6.10-rc1) doesn't
boot on my iBook/M3 (aty128). Boot stops just before switch to frame
buffer mode!

Does anyone know what's going on?

See boot parameters and .config below.

Thanks,

PS: I don't have any problem with 2.6.5-rc3-ben0, with same
framebuffer kernel config.

Nope even afterwards. What is the worth of a binary driver that only
works on kernel 2.4 (like the modem driver for the pbooks). This really
affects you _after_ buying the hardware.

from http://ibook.sdbk.de/ibookWiki/Configuration:

Colin Leroy wrote a userspace application called mouseemu
[http://geekounet.org/powerbook/files/mouseemu.tar.gz] that
handles 2nd and 3rd mouse emulation as well as scroll-wheel emulation
(ALT+trackpad as default). This also allows to disable the trackpad while
typing which is very nice if you tend to accidentially touch the trackpad.

Not with pbbuttonsd. AFAIR disabling the trackpad can't be done with any
other tool either. If you got some time to spare you could hack mouseemu to
disable/enable the trackpad via signal USR1/USR2.

Thanks, I remove also USB modules but didn't stop hotplug, I'll do it now.
I supposed it's the pmac-cpufreq-2.6.9-rc2.diff I have to apply.

What is the pbook-12"-fake-sleep-2.6.diff for? Can it avoid the
powerbook to silently shutdown after some time when running on battery
with the lid closed?

Yes, it allows to set the click behaviour and the drag-and-drop behaviour,
but it still doesn't allow to disable the trackpad.

The problem I have with this OS X like behaviour is that it makes it
impossible to resize or move a window with Alt/Meta+MMB and Alt/Meta+RMB
respectively.

excuse me.. i have problems with power saving features.. i compiled my

here are my settings
http://www.dadeb.it/files/Configs/powerbook/config-2.6.7-PowerbookG4-12
http://www.dadeb.it/files/Configs/powerbook/etc/cpufreqd.conf
the lowest power i can consume (with minimum backlight and hd powered
off) is about 1000 mh, but with an external wireless card i go on 1260
mah. full capacity is 3765, so it's about 3 hours.. using osx it keeps
battery power for about 4.5 hours

what can i try ? do you have any suggestions / sample kernel config ?

When you have to buy a separate piece of hardware (such as a video card),
it is easy to choose with respect to availability of free drivers.
But with laptops, you have to make compromises because you can't replace
parts (like the conexant modem for iBook).

My current disappointment and rebutal for Apple hardware is that sometimes
you can't even get any non-free drivers (Airport, recent Nvidia and ATI
cards).
Now, why do some manufacturers refuse to rebuild their non-free drivers for
powerpc at all (Nvidia)? I suspect Apple asked them not to do so; it
can't be for technical reasons ...

iBook 2 sterling symbol won't display in terminal windows

2004-11-01 Thread Archie Maskill
Hi everyone -

I'm running Debian testing on an iBook 2. The keyboard has the
sterling (£) symbol printed on the "3" key, so I'm inclined to think
it's a British layout. However, the "at" (@) and double quote (")
symbols are switched round to the U.S. style.

I'm trying to get the SHIFT+3 combination to produce the sterling
symbol in the console. It works just fine in Firefox and other
applications, but not in terminal windows, so I think it's a
console-related problem.

Under multi-gnome-terminal, on the command line, SHIFT+3 produces a
hash (#) followed by a carriage return. However, when editing a text
file with vim, SHIFT+3 produces what seems to be a blank space. I
know this is actually an incorrectly displayed sterling symbol,
because I can highlight the area using the mouse, then paste the
result into another non-console application where it is displayed as a
sterling symbol.

I've issued : 'dpkg-reconfigure console-data' a few times, and tried
out some of the Apple variants there, but nothing seems to make a
difference.

So, why else might the console not be displaying the sterling symbol correctly?

Thanks in advance,
Archie

That a non-free driver is better than none at all. It's simply not true

Might be a bug in pbbuttonsd then or a heat problem?

Guys,
~If you have the powerpc-utils package installed, the trackpad

usage: trackpad notap|tap|drag|lock|show

Is there a good place to put this call in the boot scripts so that the

I don't think it could be a heat problem so I have filed a bug :

I think there might be an issue with the boot params, can you try not
passing the above ? It should detect it properly anyway.

Ben.

I normally use `trackpad notap' on X session start. However.. it
sometimes seems to `forget' that setting. I tried if suspending
was the cause, but when I tested that, it did work...
haven't figured out yet, when it `forgets'.

Booting powerbook g3 with VGA

2004-11-01 Thread David 'fenrus' Syk
I have a PowerBook G3/450MHz (pismo) with broken screen,
i intend to use the box as a mediastation if i am able to get the vga to
work. I have NO lcd-screen connected to the box.

Booting from the CD i try to append the video=aty128fb:crt:1,lcd:0
And my connected crt-screen shows a white screen (with some text, can't
exactly remember what) and the box begins booting the debian-installer (
i think, cant really see it, but it sounds like it uses the
dvd-drive.=D).

I tried appending video=aty128fb:crt:1,lcd:1 aswell, with the same
result.

Btw, if i boot the machine regularly with no extra params, the connected
VGA-Device remains black.

Anyone have any idea of how to get the VGA-Output working?

/David 'fenrus' Syk

It's something to do with the pound sterling symbol having its 8th bit
set, which sits rather uncomfortably with bash.

I found this explanation:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2001/12/msg02977.html

It involves adding a line to ~/.initrc, though this doesn't appear to
make any kind of difference for me. Will keep experimenting...

Didn't see your original post, might be that you need to set a latin1
(or latin0/9 if you want to see euros too) font. Alternatively,
http://www.kenmoffat.uklinux.net has uk keytables for the iBook2 for the
versions of console-tools and kbd that were current when I got my iBook.

Why is koffice missing from debian-ppc ?

2004-11-01 Thread Tommy Trussell
I have heard some positive things about kword, but koffice is not in
the debian-ppc standard archives, and packages for other distros look
pretty outdated.

Why is there no ppc version of koffice in Debian?

I use ted. It's fast. It works well enough
