Because this problem occurs with Gnome, but not with KDE, I would suggest checking esd (does `killall esd` or `killall -KILL esd` stop the problem?) If the problem _is_ with esd, you may be able to fix it by recompiling as somebody else explained (should be in the archives for this month or last). This might also be an IRQ problem...you'll want to check /proc/ioports and /proc/iomem. If your box locks up when trying to read either of those files, then you definitely have an IRQ problem...unfortunately...I don't know how to fix them (Is IRQ Steering possible on a lappie?) Quick-access buttons on Toshiba 2775XDVD?
Hi. I have a Toshiba 2775XDVD, and I've been able to get almost everything to work. However, I have a few questions still: 1) How do I get events from the shiny silver keys directly above the floppy? I have tried using xev, which doesn't register anything, hotkey(s), and one other program that I don't remember the name of. 2) How do I get the two small mouse buttons between the spacebar and the two long mouse buttons to work? 3) How do I get suspend and standby to work correctly? After each reboot, the first time that I try to use standby mode, the hard drive spins down, the screen shuts off for a second, and then the screen turns back on. Whenever I try to suspend, the laptop suspends correctly (*gasp*), but when I wake the box up (using the shiny silver button under the logo, between the "Intel Inside" and "Designed for..." labels, on the shiny _black_ thing :o) everything works correctly except for the display, which doesn't turn back on. I have verified that the system is back to normal by playing an mp3 through mpg123, but the display fails to emit any light. Then, when I do a soft reboot (three-finger-salute or `init 6` or `shutdown -r now` or `reboot`), the Toshiba logo and all text thereafter appears warped (the right side and bottom are cut off, and the remaining graphics are stretched to fit the screen). I am only able to obtain normal functionality again by turning the laptop off, then on again. --xsdg -- ___ / Error reading FAT record: \ \ Try the SKINNY one? I have experienced the spewing sheets part before. What I believe is happening is that the printer receives the postscript commands instead of the (does Epson use ) PCL(?) commands. Because Linux/Unix traditionally only includes line feeds at the end of the line, the text quickly runs off the edge of the page. Not sure how to fix, though... sorry. If your box locks up when trying to read either of those files, then you definitely have an IRQ problem...unfortunately...I don't know how to fix them (Is IRQ Steering possible on a lappie?) Also, could you give some more details about your setup? (kernel, /proc/ioports, etc) > > TIA, > > J. > > -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- >Joshua S. Quick-access buttons on Toshiba 2775XDVD?
Re: CPU fan, CPU speed control
As others have said, you need to get cpufreq working. Personally, I'd suggest installing and using 2.6.0-testN (test9 works well on my laptop). test9 (as well as some others; I forget when it was merged) has cpufreq in the source tree, so all you need to do is enable it and the relevant options. If you need help, you can stop by irc.oftc.net/#kernelnewbies. Secondly, are you sure you have the correct cpuinfo? I haven't seen any dual-proc laptops before. Also, you can try turning on debug (needs to be compiled in, and can be activated through /proc/swsusp/) For me (2.6.1-rc1 with rc3I), the progress bar progresses at a relatively constant rate; it takes my box about 15-25 seconds (512 megs of mem, 768 megs of swap space, 1400MHz proc) You may want to check the mailing list archives for usage documentation (subject "Test patch 2L.", Thu, 04 Dec 2003 18:39:13 +1300). Sending multiple logs inline would potentially make it very difficult to find where one log ends and the next begins. Also, it would forestall someone from downloading the logs easily for analysis or whatever else. Finally, doing so would make the logs susceptible to 80-char wrapping or any other mail body translations that I may not be aware of. ::snip?
