RE: 2.5" hard drive opinions..
Title: 2.5" hard drive opinions.. I recently purchased a Seagate 5400 RPM, 100 GB. They have $30 off from buy.com, if the rebate is still valid. All in all, it's a very good drive, but maybe this is too much for your PC. I got a USB2.0 case for the drive, so the drive remains external. No noise, no heat, just great. I suppose your notebook can only do ULTRA66. So maybe you can one of these on ebay. USB on laptop
Hi everyone, I'm seeing this weird problem on debian sarge. I bought a USB flash drive about a week ago, plugged it in. I (re)compiled the kernel to support usbdevfs and SCSI support. I mounted it fine and installed backup-manager for a daily backup. It worked ok for about 4 days and now, whenever I mount the drive, it times out. Actually, it hangs. I'm getting something like that in dmesg. This is after multiple insertions and hard removals. usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:02.2-1 address 4 hub.c: new USB device 00:02.2-1, assigned address 5 WARNING: USB Mass Storage data integrity not assured USB Mass Storage device found at 5 usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:02.2-1 address 5 hub.c: new USB device 00:02.2-1, assigned address 6 WARNING: USB Mass Storage data integrity not assured USB Mass Storage device found at 6 usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:02.2-0 address 1 usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:02.2-1 address 6 usb.c: USB bus 1 deregistered uhci.c: USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver v1.1 PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:02.2 uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xfca0, IRQ 11 usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1 hub.c: USB hub found hub.c: 2 ports detected hub.c: new USB device 00:02.2-1, assigned address 2 WARNING: USB Mass Storage data integrity not assured USB Mass Storage device found at 2 usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:02.2-0 address 1 usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:02.2-1 address 2 usb.c: USB bus 1 deregistered uhci.c: fca0: host controller halted. very bad usb-uhci.c: $Revision: 1.275 $ time 20:58:13 Sep 19 2006 usb-uhci.c: High bandwidth mode enabled PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:02.2 usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xfca0, IRQ 11 usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1 hub.c: USB hub found hub.c: 2 ports detected usb-uhci.c: v1.275:USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver hub.c: new USB device 00:02.2-1, assigned address 2 WARNING: USB Mass Storage data integrity not assured USB Mass Storage device found at 2 usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:02.2-1 address 2 hub.c: new USB device 00:02.2-1, assigned address 3 WARNING: USB Mass Storage data integrity not assured USB Mass Storage device found at 3 Lsmod shows this: Module Size Used byNot tainted usb-uhci 21228 0 (unused) nls_iso8859-1 2844 1 (autoclean) nls_cp437 4348 1 (autoclean) vfat9292 5 (autoclean) fat29208 0 (autoclean) [vfat] sd_mod 9900 4 (autoclean) usb-storage21112 1 scsi_mod 82216 2 [sd_mod usb-storage] ipt_TOS 1048 12 (autoclean) ipt_MASQUERADE 1176 2 (autoclean) ipt_LOG 3160 5 (autoclean) ppp_deflate 2904 0 (autoclean) zlib_inflate 18276 0 (autoclean) [ppp_deflate] zlib_deflate 17432 0 (autoclean) [ppp_deflate] bsd_comp3928 0 (autoclean) printer 6688 0 esssolo1 23624 0 (autoclean) ds 6408 2 yenta_socket8704 2 pcmcia_core35392 0 [ds yenta_socket] ipt_REJECT 2808 4 (autoclean) ipt_state568 51 (autoclean) iptable_mangle 2192 1 (autoclean) ip_nat_irc 2256 0 (unused) ip_nat_ftp 2832 0 (unused) iptable_nat14264 3 [ipt_MASQUERADE ip_nat_irc ip_nat_ftp] ip_conntrack_irc2992 1 ip_conntrack_ftp3760 1 ip_conntrack 16544 4 [ipt_MASQUERADE ipt_state ip_nat_irc ip_nat_ftp iptable_nat ip_conntrack_irc ip_conntrack_ftp] iptable_filter 1668 1 (autoclean) ip_tables 10360 10 [ipt_TOS ipt_MASQUERADE ipt_LOG ipt_REJECT ipt_state iptable_mangle iptable_nat iptable_filter] ppp_async 6240 1 (autoclean) ppp_generic16256 3 (autoclean) [ppp_deflate bsd_comp ppp_async] slhc4384 0 (autoclean) [ppp_generic] Besides rebooting, I don't know what to do. Xircom hangs on a Tecra 8000
Hi, I have a Tecra 8000, running Debian 2.2r5, with a Xircom Fast Ethernet + modem adapter. I got the pcmcia tools to work properly, everything (PCI bus, pcmcia, ethernet card and modem) is using irq 11. The Ethernet adapter is detected and configured. I tried to force the pcmcia driver to use the resources that matched the most Win2000's configuration panel, that is: io_port = fd00-fdff irq = 11 memory = Actually, Windows reported an io list of fd80-fdff but the cardmgr didn't like it, so I bumped it to fd00-fdff and it worked. But as soon as I do an "ifconfig eth0 up", linux freezes. I can do nothing but reboot. The leds on the card are still there, the system looks good but frozen. My kernel supports all the APM flags, serial irq and so on (as I found earlier in the mailing list), the BIOS is set to Cardbus 16-bit, but still, doesn't work. I tried different IO ports, different memory address, always freezes. I tried to force it to fd80 for IO port, cardmgr complained about not being able to allocate 136 IO ports (?). If anybody can point me to a patch, a setting in the kernel, ANYTHING, please help me ! Thanks ! --Stephane -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Thanks for your reply, Cassandra ! I am using ACPI v9.3. Putting in auto-select mode doesn't work under windows nor linux. I am using kernel 2.2.19 that I recompiled to add APM and some other features (sharing irq and stuff). My NIC is a Xircom RBEM56G-100 (CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56). Okay, being an avid user of the Tecra 8000 myself, I have a few suggestions for you. To start with - always use the PCMCIA slot in auto-select mode. Then, always make the BIOS do the interrupt allocations. >From then, things start getting interesting, and so I would need to ask some questions, starting off the questions :- Are you using the default Debian kernel, or have you upgraded it? What Xircom card do you have? And, have you yet upgraded the bios on the Toshiba? If you haven't upgraded the Bios, I recommend it. As does Toshiba - the Tecra 8000 has some problems with win2K without upgrading, and the win2K issues can cause problems elsewhere (at least Toshiba claims so). tape drives part 2
Hello all, I've already posted about this a few weeks ago. I recently lost a 60 GB hard drive, so now, I'm really steering away from hard drives and going to tape drives, when it's about backing up data. FYI, my server is a laptop running debian, no SCSI, just USB. I've seen Travan drives from Seagate, they're USB 2.0. The unit is cheap ($250) and tapes are pricey ($3.80/GB). Has anybody used this product ? Is it good ? Anybody has tape drives for linux ? Would amanda do the job for periodic backups ? Are there better alternatives ? Thanks everybody ! --Stéphane
RE: tape drives part 2
Thanks Mark. I am thinking of using the USB version of the drive. Does it mount just like another drive ? I thought amanda was a requirement, but it seems like tar could do the job. logrotate stopped working ?
Hello everyone, I'm puzzled here. Logrotate stopped working and I don't know why. If I force the process, such as "logrotate -f /etc/logrotate.d/apache" , it's fine and dandy. Should logrotate be called from within cron jobs ? aka should there be a "logrotate" entry in the cron.weekly directory ? What am I missing here ?... TIA ! --Stéphane

RE: ipchains problem
You can't do that with ipchains (or I've never managed to do that with ipchains !). My best advice would be to upgrade to 2.4 and install iptables. I am not sure 2.2 kernels make port forwarding an easy task. Once you get 2.4 installed, I'd recommend using the shorewall package that can be downloaded using apt-get. I don't recall the exact name (do an apt-cache search shorewall). Then, once you installed it, play with the /etc/shorewall/rules file and look at the DNAT or REDIRECT clauses. Good luck. Iptables worked like a charm. --Stephane -Original Message- From: Rodrigo Haces Rozada [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, April 21, 2003 11:26 AM To: debian-laptop@lists.debian.org Subject: ipchains problem I know that this have nothing to do with this list, but i'm not suscribed to any other so here it is, I have a router machine connected to internet via DSL, its internal ip is 192.168.0.1, i need every internet package that arrives to port 221 go directly to the local machine with ip 192.168.0.12 port 22, i need to use ipchains cause i have an old kernell, can anyone help me with this? laptops, centrino and debian
Hi all, [Note: it's slightly off-topic :)] Some people are talking about stolen laptops, some others are selling, well... I'm buying, perhaps. I was wondering if anybody had opinions on this new breed of notebooks with the Centrino technology. By looking at websites and reviews, I selected the following ones: - Dell Latitude D600 or D800. I think the nVidia Geforce 4200 is a requirement to achieve decent 3D (eventhough Debian doesn't really care, I want to do some gaming under Window$). They have good reviews apparently, even if some people really like Dells and others really hate them. - unbranded laptops, such as found on http://www.powernotebooks.com (no, I am doing free advertisement, it was the only website I could find). They have centrino ones (although they're using an ATI GPU) and they are quite cheaper. So my questions are: - is it dangerous to use the latest chipsets (centrino has Intel 855MP) as far as drivers are concerned ? Should I expect Debian to install right off the bat ? - are Dells or Toshibas or XXX _really_ better than unbranded ones ? (unbranded means made by some taiwanese maker in my case) ? Would there be the same issues about installing Debian ? - if anybody recently bought a centrino, would you be kind of enough to tell me what model/brand/specs, if it works well, if you're happy, etc ? I am asking here because I really didn't find much info and reviews. Thanks a bunch ! --Stephane
RE: experience with late model laptops?
My $0.02. If you're looking for cheaper stuff, try www.powernotebooks.com. It's sort of a grey market of the laptops, worth giving it a shot. At least, I got an answer the same day. I think Dells are pretty good, even though I heard their biggest problem is... customer service. Definitely choose a latitude over an inspiron. [However, Dell is a Texas-based company, so if you have political resents, you may want to choose something else :) ] Toshibas sound good, but you have to cope with their special look and feel. Did you consider Sony ? Hope this helps a least a little. RE: experience with late model laptops?
I was talking about Centrino's only. They sound much more promising than P4-Ms. And battery life is... much better. From all the newsgroups I've read, the Dells are quite hot too. The D800 uses an Nvidia GeForce 400, which is quite hot. The Radeon (ATI Radeon 9000) is much cooler and less power-greedy, maybe slightly less performant than the GeForce. IBMs and Dells have the best battery life. Note one thing: all the online tests you'll see only mention big brands, but never generics. So I am sure they're a little biased and cheaper generic models might cut just as well as expensive models. As for Centrino and linux, someone posted a link already, I am sure google has the answer. --Stephane -Original Message- From: Jeff Griffiths [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 04, 2003 12:23 PM To: Provost, Stephane Cc: debian-laptop@lists.debian.org Subject: Re: experience with late model laptops? Epson C82, USB and modules
Hi all, This might be a little off-topic, so please forgive me :) I am running 2.4.20, don't remember if it's potato or woody. Anyways, I'd like to know if it's possible to compile modules (say the USB printer module), get the module, put it in the right place, and do an insmod without having to restart the system. I thought modules where pieces of code that can loaded and unloaded at will. So that should mean that I can compile them on the side, and (hopefully) insmod them later. I tried to change my .config file and do a make modules, but the .o file didn't show up, so I don't know what to do. Oh, USB support is compiled, but I want the USB printer module to be able to use my brand new epson c82, and hook it up with samba to share it to the network. Thanks ! --Stephane
RE: [OT] Virusses (many!) via list?
Hi all, I am also receiving a _lot_ of these [EMAIL PROTECTED] emails from spammers, especially with attachments of 150k. Does anybody know which mailfilter I should use ? My wishlist is: - I'd like to filter based on rules (regexp) - I'd like to have a report of what got filtered and why. On this topic, I remember once someone sending a report from his mailfilter giving a score to the email. This score was based on points associated to the probability it is a spam (like 5 points for certain keywords, more for big attachments, points for the sender -whether it's valid or not), etc... - whether it uses config files or has a web front-end doesn't really matter... Suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks ! --Stéphane
RE: samba printing
Hi Folk :) I have an epson c82 and it took me ages to get it to work with CUPS and samba. First, samba. Here's (a snippet of) my smb.conf, maybe something will help you there. [global] admin users = root printer admin = stephane printcap name = cups load printers = yes printing = cups [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba create mask = 0700 printable = Yes browseable = No public = Yes guest ok = Yes writable = No [print$] comment = Printers Drivers path = /etc/samba/drivers browseable = yes guest ok = no read only = yes write list = root This allows clients to automatically download the drivers when mapping the printer. Also, when configuring CUPS, I would strictly follow their website (www.cups.org). This is how my printers.conf looks like: Info Location DeviceURI usb://EPSON/Stylus%20C82 <-- note the usb:// here State Stopped StateMessage Paused Accepting Yes JobSheets none none QuotaPeriod 0 PageLimit 0 KLimit 0 I am assuming you're using the USB version of the printer. If it's parallele, usb:// will look different. I think you'll need to use smbpasswd to create an account for the printer. Also, according to your workgroup/domain settings, you'll need to add the printer using the admin account (root in my case), otherwise you'll get priviledges problems. Again, the CUPS website got me started... If you want the clients to automatically download the printer's drivers, you have to put a few PPDs and other files in /usr/share/cups/model, but that's another discussion. Hope this helps. --Stéphane -Original Message- From: Alessandro Speranza [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 02, 2003 5:20 AM To: debian-laptop@lists.debian.org Subject: samba printing Hi Folks. I know this is not exactly a laptop problem, but since I'm having it with my laptop I ask it to you. I've got (damn it!) an Epson printer connected to a Windows XP box. The printer is shared with the other computers of the workgroup. One of these computers is mine, which dual boots (with same IP) on linux and windows. I've got samba (smbd and nmbd) running and if I do smbclient //servername/sharename I get the smb prompt and can put stuff and get it printed. However, when I try to configure cups, after I finish I get the following message from the cups web-interface: Description: epson Location: Printer State: processing, accepting jobs. "Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry in 60 seconds...ERROR: SMB tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED" Device URI: smb://MATEMATICA11/EPSON82 Furthermore, from the samba log file for the print server I get messages like: [2003/10/01 11:53:36, 0] passdb/pdb_ldap.c:ldap_open_connection(201) LDAPS option set...! NDAS with debian ?
Hi all, Has anybody managed to get NDAS support with debian ? I am thinking of buying the Ximeta netdisk external drive ($99 at Fry's for all american folks, for an 80-gig drive, not bad !). This drive can act as an expensive Netapps filer, but it's much simpler to use, much smaller and cheaper. Anybody has one ? How did it perform ? Thanks ! --Stéphane
Thanks ! --Stephane
RE: Xircom hangs on a Tecra 8000
Thanks for your reply, Cassandra ! I am using ACPI v9.3. Putting in auto-select mode doesn't work under windows nor linux. I am using kernel 2.2.19 that I recompiled to add APM and some other features (sharing irq and stuff). My NIC is a Xircom RBEM56G-100 (CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56). RE: pcmcia administration
You will need to install the pcmcia_cs package (look it up on freshmeat). I know there's a .deb package. Once you got that installed, I believe you'll have to compile the modules and your kernel to support these. Don't forget to select the right card type when compiling the pcmcia package, especially for the 3c589. You'll need to insmod it probably ("insmod 3c59x" does the job for me) and that should do it. If you didn't modify your startup files, you'll also need to do "/etc/init.d/networking start" to see eth0 back in your interfaces list. laptops, centrino and debian
--Stephane -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? RE: experience with late model laptops?
My $0.02. If you're looking for cheaper stuff, try www.powernotebooks.com. It's sort of a grey market of the laptops, worth giving it a shot. At least, I got an answer the same day.
--Stephane -Original Message- From: Jeff Griffiths [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 04, 2003 12:23 PM To: Provost, Stephane Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: experience with late model laptops? I've read user comments about this laptop and... the battery life sucks, it's slow and badly designed, although very pretty. Bottom line was: expensive, pretty, but you won't get the best bank for the bucks. I don't know where I read those, I think I used google.
Thanks ! --Stéphane -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
--Stéphane -Original Message- From: Alessandro Speranza [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 02, 2003 5:20 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: samba printing Hi Folks.
How did it perform ? tape backup ?
Hello everybody, Another random question for debian users on laptop. The hard disk on my server/laptop has been working a lot for the past 3 years and I am now waking up in cold sweats during the middle of the night because I didn't do any backup. So here I am now, browsing for backup solutions, from Zip drives to DVD burners or CD burners. Here's what I want to do: - the disk is rather small (< 10 GB) but I want to be able to do incremental and full backups - the media is not important. Tapes would be good I guess ? (they're cheap and 'scratch resistant' as opposed to CDs) - I don't have SCSI stuff. - Some software should support it (I am running woody). - USB would be great, speed is not important. - CHEAP ! I can't spend $1000 bucks for the overall system. I know I am asking for too much, but maybe someone has already thought about it and can enlighten me on the possible solutions. Thanks very much everybody !! --Stéphane Do you think that illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup?

When I ran e2defrag, it said the drive should be unmounted (ok easy, I guess I'll need a bootdisk, I want to defrag /dev/hda0) and also I'll have to run the bootloader configuration tool because the image may have moved. What does the latter part mean ? I thought the kernel image was just a file and the bootloader lived in the MBR no matter what ? What is the magical instruction to reconfigure lilo ? I don't want to screw the system up and not be able to reboot (gasp). Thanks ! --Stéphane
RE: tape backup ?
Hmmm didn't think about this. That's a great idea though. And how do I restore the files now ? Say my HDD crashes, do I need to reinstall Debian and then run a reverse rsync or something like this ? Does rsync allow to backup an entire OS (including config files, special files, links, etc...) ? I am really looking for something like 'ghost'... I am not sure rsync cuts it. Not to put water on your fire, but a *nix system is inherently different from a MS style one. Defraging is pretty much not needed for two reasons. First, files are written to a location on the disk where the file will fit whole first, then in two pieces if the disk is really full, and so on, so that fragmentation is a rare event and eventually self correcting. Compare this to MS, where the first open sector is used regardless of whether the file will fit. Fragmentation is the rule. Second, Linux is a multi-task system where having your disk heads flying around actually aids in accessing tasks, where the system can recognize "Gee, the heads are close to that one, lets grab that first then move over and get the rest." Opportunistic, as it were. In closing, back in 1995 when I first asked this same question, the folks at the time suggested that the hazards of running the defrag far outweighed the possible minor benefits. I'll do more searching though. Tapes would be good I guess ? (they're cheap > and 'scratch resistant' as opposed to CDs) i don't know about where you live - but here in switzerland, good tapedrives are quite expensive. also, tapes can fail due to moist, rough and long- time usage or dust. also you're not that flexible if you need more space later (you can just buy a larger disk if you need more space). also, tapes tend to be slow i think (except of course for really expensive material) > - Some software should support it (I am running woody). firewire disks are no problem at all and mountable as is a normal harddisk. i don't know how well usb 2.0 disks work - i prefer firewire. > - USB would be great, speed is not important. speed is quite good with firewire/usb 2.0 > - CHEAP ! I can't spend $1000 bucks for the overall system. here in switzerland you'll get a firewire-hd-case with included power supply + a 250 gb hd for around 230-240 us-$. if you're paranoid you can even buy a second one :-) kind regards, Pascal Mainini -- Pascal Mainini --- open-minded computer artist encrypted mail preferred- http://www.impressionet.ch/crypto/ more? -> www.impressionet.ch ---artist? -> www.guerk.li jabber? - [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: hdd defragmentation / e2defrag
All right then. It's true that I was first raised on DOS so a FAT HAD to be defragmented often. Thanks for your comments, I'll therefore forget about defragmenting my HDD. --Stéphane -Original Message- From: Curt Howland [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 11:49 AM To: debian-laptop@lists.debian.org Subject: Re: hdd defragmentation / e2defrag -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hi. In closing, back in 1995 when I first asked this same question, the folks at the time suggested that the hazards of running the defrag far outweighed the possible minor benefits. tape drives part 2
Thanks !
