Title: 2.5" hard drive opinions..

I recently purchased a
Seagate 5400 RPM, 100 GB. They have $30 off from buy.com, if the
rebate is still valid.

All in all, it's a very good drive, but
maybe this is too much for your PC. I got a USB2.0 case for the drive, so the
drive remains external. No noise, no heat, just great.

I suppose your notebook can only do
ULTRA66. So maybe you can one of these on ebay.

Hope this helps !

I've decided to upgrade the HDD in my notebook for my Debian

atthe moment...There isn't much difference in price, and I havn't
found much in theway of reviews online, so I thought I would ask to see if
anyone onthis list had any recomendations, experience, etc...It an
older 233MHz Pentium MMX notebook, so I don't need (and can't use)SATA and
the like.Seagate ST9100824A, Toshiba MK1031GAS and Fujitsu MHV2100AM are
availablelocally, and as far as I can determine compatable. The
Toshiba is about 20% cheaper, but 4200rpm rather than 5400rpm.Other than
that, I can't see much to choose between

USB on laptop

2006-09-25 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hi everyone,

I'm seeing this weird problem on debian sarge.

I bought a USB flash drive about a week ago, plugged it in. I (re)compiled the
kernel to support usbdevfs and SCSI support. I mounted it fine and installed
backup-manager for a daily backup.

It worked ok for about 4 days and now, whenever I mount the drive, it times
out. Actually, it hangs.

I'm getting something like that in dmesg. This is after multiple insertions and
hard removals.

Xircom hangs on a Tecra 8000

2002-01-16 Thread Provost, Stephane

Hi,

I have a Tecra 8000, running Debian 2.2r5, with a Xircom Fast Ethernet +
modem adapter. I got the pcmcia tools to work properly, everything (PCI bus,
pcmcia, ethernet card and modem) is using irq 11.

The Ethernet adapter is detected and configured. I tried to force the pcmcia
driver to use the resources that matched the most Win2000's configuration
panel, that is:

io_port = fd00-fdff
irq = 11
memory =

Actually, Windows reported an io list of fd80-fdff but the cardmgr didn't
like it, so I bumped it to fd00-fdff and it worked.

But as soon as I do an "ifconfig eth0 up", linux freezes. I can do nothing
but reboot. The leds on the card are still there, the system looks good but
frozen.

My kernel supports all the APM flags, serial irq and so on (as I found
earlier in the mailing list), the BIOS is set to Cardbus 16-bit, but still,
doesn't work. I tried different IO ports, different memory address, always
freezes. I tried to force it to fd80 for IO port, cardmgr complained about
not being able to allocate 136 IO ports (?).

If anybody can point me to a patch, a setting in the kernel, ANYTHING,
please help me !

Thanks !

RE: Xircom hangs on a Tecra 8000

2002-01-17 Thread Provost, Stephane

Thanks for your reply, Cassandra !

I am using ACPI v9.3. Putting in auto-select mode doesn't work under windows
nor linux. I am using kernel 2.2.19 that I recompiled to add APM and some
other features (sharing irq and stuff).

My NIC is a Xircom RBEM56G-100 (CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56).

So, any clue ?

Hmm... Okay, being an avid user of the Tecra 8000 myself, I have a few
suggestions for you.

To start with - always use the PCMCIA slot in auto-select mode.
Then, always make the BIOS do the interrupt allocations.

>From then, things start getting interesting, and so I would need to ask some
questions, starting off the questions :- Are you using the default Debian
kernel, or have you upgraded it? What Xircom card do you have? And, have
you yet upgraded the bios on the Toshiba?

If you haven't upgraded the Bios, I recommend it. As does Toshiba - the
Tecra 8000 has some problems with win2K without upgrading, and the win2K
issues can cause problems elsewhere (at least Toshiba claims so).

If you have still have hassles after this, I'll be happy to help out...

Cassandra

tape drives part 2

2004-07-06 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hello all,

I've already posted about this a few weeks ago. I recently lost a 60 GB hard
drive, so now, I'm really steering away from hard drives and going to tape
drives, when it's about backing up data. FYI, my server is a laptop running
debian, no SCSI, just USB.

I've seen Travan drives from Seagate, they're USB 2.0. The unit is cheap
($250) and tapes are pricey ($3.80/GB). Has anybody used this product ? Is
it good ? Anybody has tape drives for linux ? Would amanda do the job for
periodic backups ? Are there better alternatives ?

Thanks everybody !

Thanks Mark. I am thinking of using the USB version of the drive. Does it
mount just like another drive ? I thought amanda was a requirement, but it
seems like tar could do the job.

Thanks !

logrotate stopped working ?

2005-03-07 Thread Provost, Stephane

Hello everyone,

I'm puzzled here. Logrotate stopped working and I don't
know why. If I force the process, such as "logrotate -f /etc/logrotate.d/apache"
, it's fine and dandy. Should logrotate be called from within cron jobs ?
aka should there be a "logrotate" entry in the cron.weekly
directory ?

What am I missing here ?... TIA !

Thanks Ian,

It gave me:

I found out I had a 'squid' file in logrotate.d directoty. Silly me !

Actually, there should be an entry in cron.daily:
/etc/cron.daily/logrotate

Mine looks like this:
--- begin 755 /etc/cron.daily/logrotate
#!/bin/sh

test -x /usr/sbin/logrotate || exit 0
/usr/sbin/logrotate /etc/logrotate.conf
--- end 755 /etc/cron.daily/logrotate

More likely, tho, you've got something foobar'd in /etc/logrotate.conf
-- try running the logrotate command from /etc/cron.daily/logrotate
manually and see what happens.

This may be completely unrelated, but in setting up Sarge on my
TP570E, I ran into the same exact problem and noticed that if I just
tried rebooting again... the problem went away. It was really wierd.
For the first week or so it would do this routinely and I'd need to
effectivly boot twice. The first time getting the Seg fault-> kernel
panic, the second time no problems. I'm into the 2nd or so week using
it now and I don't seem to be having the problem. It's wierd.

RE: ipchains problem

2003-04-22 Thread Provost, Stephane
You can't do that with ipchains (or I've never managed to do that with
ipchains !). My best advice would be to upgrade to 2.4 and install iptables.
I am not sure 2.2 kernels make port forwarding an easy task.

Once you get 2.4 installed, I'd recommend using the shorewall package that
can be downloaded using apt-get. I don't recall the exact name (do an
apt-cache search shorewall). Then, once you installed it, play with the
/etc/shorewall/rules file and look at the DNAT or REDIRECT clauses.

Good luck. Iptables worked like a charm.

I find gericom laptop but they seem too fragile.

I find hp laptop as ZT 1201 S (or ZE 4234 S, ZE 4208 S) at about 900 EUR.
They are perhaps a little old, but I believe hp-laptops are robust.

but I find no help about linux on these laptop.
There are no entry on linux-on-laptops, tuxmobile, and google.

Do you know these laptops ?
Can I use linux on it ? with xfree ?
Can I use pcmcia port for a wifi use ?
Do you know the advantages and faults of it ?
What other laptop can I buy ? (at about 1000 EUR)

Have a good day.

I have a question. How do you set up multiple runlevels, such as one if the
laptop is plugged into AC, one if it is on battery, one if connected to the
LAN, one if it's a leap year, etc... I didn't know that was possible, and
I'd be interested to know how to do it.

Pointers to resources on the WWW is fine too.

laptops, centrino and debian

2003-07-14 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hi all,

[Note: it's slightly off-topic :)]

Some people are talking about stolen laptops, some others are selling,
well... I'm buying, perhaps.

I was wondering if anybody had opinions on this new breed of notebooks with
the Centrino technology. By looking at websites and reviews, I selected the
following ones:

- Dell Latitude D600 or D800. I think the nVidia Geforce 4200 is a
requirement to achieve decent 3D (eventhough Debian doesn't really care, I
want to do some gaming under Window$). They have good reviews
apparently, even if some people really like Dells and others really hate
them.

- unbranded laptops, such as found on http://www.powernotebooks.com (no, I
am doing free advertisement, it was the only website I could find). They
have centrino ones (although they're using an ATI GPU) and they are quite
cheaper.

So my questions are:
- is it dangerous to use the latest chipsets (centrino has Intel 855MP) as
far as drivers are concerned ? Should I expect Debian to install right off
the bat ?
- are Dells or Toshibas or XXX _really_ better than unbranded ones ?
(unbranded means made by some taiwanese maker in my case) ? Would there be
the same issues about installing Debian ?
- if anybody recently bought a centrino, would you be kind of enough to tell
me what model/brand/specs, if it works well, if you're happy, etc ?

I am asking here because I really didn't find much info and reviews.

Thanks a bunch !

RE: experience with late model laptops?

2003-08-04 Thread Provost, Stephane
My $0.02. If you're looking for cheaper stuff, try www.powernotebooks.com.
It's sort of a grey market of the laptops, worth giving it a shot. At least,
I got an answer the same day.

I think Dells are pretty good, even though I heard their biggest problem
is... customer service. Definitely choose a latitude over an inspiron.
[However, Dell is a Texas-based company, so if you have political resents,
you may want to choose something else :) ]

Toshibas sound good, but you have to cope with their special look and feel.
Did you consider Sony ?

Hope this helps a least a little.

Cheers

RE: experience with late model laptops?

2003-08-04 Thread Provost, Stephane
I was talking about Centrino's only. They sound much more promising than
P4-Ms. And battery life is... much better. From all the newsgroups I've
read, the Dells are quite hot too. The D800 uses an Nvidia GeForce 400,
which is quite hot. The Radeon (ATI Radeon 9000) is much cooler and less
power-greedy, maybe slightly less performant than the GeForce.

IBMs and Dells have the best battery life. Note one thing: all the online
tests you'll see only mention big brands, but never generics. So I am sure
they're a little biased and cheaper generic models might cut just as well as
expensive models.

As for Centrino and linux, someone posted a link already, I am sure google
has the answer.

I've read user comments about this laptop and... the battery life sucks,
it's slow and badly designed, although very pretty. Bottom line was:
expensive, pretty, but you won't get the best bank for the bucks.

I don't know where I read those, I think I used google.

Epson C82, USB and modules

2003-08-12 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hi all,

This might be a little off-topic, so please forgive me :)

I am running 2.4.20, don't remember if it's potato or woody. Anyways, I'd
like to know if it's possible to compile modules (say the USB printer
module), get the module, put it in the right place, and do an insmod without
having to restart the system. I thought modules where pieces of code that
can loaded and unloaded at will. So that should mean that I can compile them
on the side, and (hopefully) insmod them later.

I tried to change my .config file and do a make modules, but the .o file
didn't show up, so I don't know what to do.

Oh, USB support is compiled, but I want the USB printer module to be able to
use my brand new epson c82, and hook it up with samba to share it to the
network.

Thanks !

RE: [OT] Virusses (many!) via list?

2003-09-23 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hi all,

I am also receiving a _lot_ of these [EMAIL PROTECTED] emails from spammers,
especially
with attachments of 150k. Does anybody know which mailfilter I should use ?
My wishlist is:
- I'd like to filter based on rules (regexp)
- I'd like to have a report of what got filtered and why. On this topic, I
remember once someone sending a report from his mailfilter giving a score to
the email. This score was based on points associated to the probability it
is a spam (like 5 points for certain keywords, more for big attachments,
points for the sender -whether it's valid or not), etc...
- whether it uses config files or has a web front-end doesn't really
matter...

Suggestions are more than welcome.

Thanks !

RE: samba printing

2003-10-02 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hi Folk :)

I have an epson c82 and it took me ages to get it to work with CUPS and
samba. First, samba.

Here's (a snippet of) my smb.conf, maybe something will help you there.

[global]
admin users = root
printer admin = stephane
printcap name = cups
load printers = yes
printing = cups

[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
create mask = 0700
printable = Yes
browseable = No
public = Yes
guest ok = Yes
writable = No

[print$]
comment = Printers Drivers
path = /etc/samba/drivers
browseable = yes
guest ok = no
read only = yes
write list = root

This allows clients to automatically download the drivers when mapping the
printer. Also, when configuring CUPS, I would strictly follow their website
(www.cups.org). This is how my printers.conf looks like:

Info
Location
DeviceURI usb://EPSON/Stylus%20C82 <-- note the usb:// here
State Stopped
StateMessage Paused
Accepting Yes
JobSheets none none
QuotaPeriod 0
PageLimit 0
KLimit 0

I am assuming you're using the USB version of the printer. If it's
parallele, usb:// will look different.

I think you'll need to use smbpasswd to create an account for the printer.
Also, according to your workgroup/domain settings, you'll need to add the
printer using the admin account (root in my case), otherwise you'll get
priviledges problems.

Again, the CUPS website got me started... If you want the clients to
automatically download the printer's drivers, you have to put a few PPDs and
other files in /usr/share/cups/model, but that's another discussion.

Hope this helps.

Hi Folks.
I know this is not exactly a laptop problem, but since I'm having it with
my laptop I ask it to you.
I've got (damn it!) an Epson printer connected to a Windows XP box. The
printer is shared with the other computers of the workgroup. One of these
computers is mine, which dual boots (with same IP) on linux and windows.
I've got samba (smbd and nmbd) running and if I do
smbclient //servername/sharename
I get the smb prompt and can put stuff and get it printed. However, when I
try to configure cups, after I finish I get the following message from the
cups web-interface:

Description: epson
Location:
Printer State: processing, accepting jobs.
"Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry in 60 seconds...ERROR: SMB
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED"
Device URI: smb://MATEMATICA11/EPSON82

Furthermore, from the samba log file for the print server I get messages
like:

[2003/10/01 11:53:36, 0] passdb/pdb_ldap.c:ldap_open_connection(201)
  LDAPS option set...!
[2003/10/01 11:53:36, 0] passdb/secrets.c:fetch_ldap_pw(264)
  fetch_ldap_pw: no ldap secret retrieved!
[2003/10/01 11:53:36, 0] passdb/pdb_ldap.c:ldap_connect_system(308)
ldap_connect_system: Failed to retrieve password for from secrets.tdb

Does anybody have any idea what's going on?

By the way, I installed the "unix print service" or something like that on
the windows machine.

Cheers
Alessandro

NDAS with debian ?

2003-10-09 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hi all,

Has anybody managed to get NDAS support with debian ? I am thinking of
buying the Ximeta netdisk external drive ($99 at Fry's for all american

Netapps filer, but it's much simpler to use, much smaller and cheaper.

Anybody has one ? How did it perform ?

Xircom hangs on a Tecra 8000

2002-01-16 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hi,

I have a Tecra 8000, running Debian 2.2r5, with a Xircom Fast Ethernet +
modem adapter. I got the pcmcia tools to work properly, everything (PCI bus,
pcmcia, ethernet card and modem) is using irq 11.

The Ethernet adapter is detected and configured. I tried to force the pcmcia
driver to use the resources that matched the most Win2000's configuration
panel, that is:

io_port = fd00-fdff
irq = 11

Cassandra

It is very annoying, since the graphics card should support 1024x768, at

My 390 has the NeoMagic 256 graphics, 32MB ram, and a 200MHz Pentium. If
this helps anybody to see the answer.

I have edited my config files, so the resolutions above 800x600 shouldn't

Should the machine be capable of displaying 1024x768, or am I totally wrong?

Are you sure it loaded the appropriate module ? do a "lsmod" and see if
there's anything that mentions your Nokia Cardphone thing. If not, you'll

RE: pcmcia administration

2002-10-25 Thread Provost, Stephane
You will need to install the pcmcia_cs package (look it up on freshmeat). I
know there's a .deb package.

Once you got that installed, I believe you'll have to compile the modules
and your kernel to support these. Don't forget to select the right card type
when compiling the pcmcia package, especially for the 3c589. You'll need to
insmod it probably ("insmod 3c59x" does the job for me) and that should do
it. If you didn't modify your startup files, you'll also need to do
"/etc/init.d/networking start" to see eth0 back in your interfaces list.

Hope this helps !

Hello List

I installed a Debian Woody distribution on my Dell laptop. I must have
mist
the "pcmcia network installtion" during the initial installation
procedure.
Since I am new to Debian (I had a Suse distribution before) I don't know
how
to administrate the pcmcia network settings afterwards.

I am using the 2.2.20 standard kernel. "cardinfo" tells me that it did
indeed find the pcmcia devices. (The pcmcia network card is a 3c589.
That
seems to work fine.) However, it does not seem to initilize the the
network
device. When I say "ifconfig" it shows me only the lo stuff.

I tried to administrate the network parameters with "netconf". Well,
that
created a conf.modules file. That did not help much!

If you could give me a hint which tool to use or if you could name me a
howto, manpage, I would be glad.

Thank you vermy much

RE: New user question....

2002-10-25 Thread Provost, Stephane
Isn't it just a hotkey on your keyboard to switch to another display ? On my
Thinkpad, it's a Function key plus a number to switch from VGA, LCD or both.
Make sure that you have the proper resolution (and depth) for your VGA
output to be enabled (Thinkpads only work in 16 bits and 1024x768 I think).

As for changing resolution, CTRL ALT + or CTRL ALT - should do the job for
switching between resolutions. Make sure your xf86config has all the
parameters set up.

Almost all 3Com and Intel (EtherExpress) cards are supported. I myself have
one 3com and one intel etherexpress in my laptop, works pretty well... You
just need the modules to be loaded.

I think that by "only works under Windows", they really meant "doesn't work
for MacOS". Linux is a given, if it works for Windows, it has a very high
chance of working for Linux as well (harware-wise).

RE: Nokia Cardphone 2.0

2002-10-21 Thread Provost, Stephane
Are you sure it loaded the appropriate module ? do a "lsmod" and see if
there's anything that mentions your Nokia Cardphone thing. If not, you'll
have to use insmod and find out which module to load...

As for using the ttyS interface, wouldn't minicom be a good place to start ?
(I am not sure about this one :) ).

Hope this helps !

Subject: Nokia Cardphone 2.0

Hi,

I've got a Nokia Cardphone 2.0 and don't know how to configure/use it...
When
I insert it into my PCMCIA-slot I get a high and a deep beep... Cardinfo
shows "serial or modem" but no device and

#cardctl ident
shows:
Socket 0:
product info: "Nokia Mobile Phones", "Nokia Card Phone"
  manfid: 0x0124, 0x0900
  function: 2 (serial)

(what seems for me to be right...)

#cardctl status
shows:
Socket 0:
  5V 16-bit PC Card
  function 0: [ready], [wp]

How can I access the phone via a ttyS interface?

Thanks

Max

RE: PCMCIA network card

Almost all 3Com and Intel (EtherExpress) cards are supported. I myself have
one 3com and one intel etherexpress in my laptop, works pretty well... You
just need the modules to be loaded.

I think that by "only works under Windows", they really meant "doesn't work
for MacOS". Linux is a given, if it works for Windows, it has a very high
chance of working for Linux as well (harware-wise).

Can any one advise me on any pcmcia card I can use with my laptop?

As for Centrino and linux, someone posted a link already, I am sure google
has the answer.

with a specific reference to the 'Sager NP4020' model on the 15" page on
the site, and also targeted generally at laptops that use desktop P4s:

i have an earlier model of this laptop, it is a generic model marketed
by a number of companies including alienware and eurcom in north
america. I have unstable running on it with most functionality
available, but i haven't tried to access firewire, USB etc and don't yet
have dri running.

also, these things run _HOT_ and have crappy battery life. i would
recommend in these cases to go with a centrino-based laptop for most
uses, but i'm not sure where linux support for this is at. anyone? bueller?

Epson C82, USB and modules

2003-08-14 Thread Provost, Stephane

Oh, USB support is compiled, but I want the USB printer module to be able to
use my brand new epson c82, and hook it up with samba to share it to the
network.

Thanks !

Hi all,

I am also receiving a _lot_ of these [EMAIL PROTECTED] emails from spammers, especially
with attachments of 150k.

[global]
admin users = root
printer admin = stephane
printcap name = cups
load printers = yes
printing = cups

[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
create mask = 0700
printable = Yes
browseable = No
public = Yes
guest ok = Yes
writable = No

[print$]
comment = Printers Drivers
path = /etc/samba/drivers
browseable = yes
guest ok = no
read only = yes
write list = root

"Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry in 60 seconds...ERROR: SMB
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED"
Device URI: smb://MATEMATICA11/EPSON82

Furthermore, from the samba log file for the print server I get messages
like:

[2003/10/01 11:53:36, 0] passdb/pdb_ldap.c:ldap_open_connection(201)
  LDAPS option set...!
[2003/10/01 11:53:36, 0] passdb/secrets.c:fetch_ldap_pw(264)

Does anybody have any idea what's going on?

By the way, I installed the "unix print service" or something like that on
the windows machine.

Cheers

NDAS with debian ?

2003-10-09 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hi all,

Has anybody managed to get NDAS support with debian ? I am thinking of
buying the Ximeta netdisk external drive ($99 at Fry's for all american
folks, for an 80-gig drive, not bad !). This drive can act as an expensive
Netapps filer, but it's much simpler to use, much smaller and cheaper.

Anybody has one ? How did it perform ?

Interesting email address ('computer specialist') :)

You're on a debian mailing list. If this problem happens on a system where
debian is installed, it may be a problem with gpm. Run gpmconfig again and
choose the appropriate PS/2 (and not 'P/S2') mouse for your system.
Eventually, it will work.

Good luck !

Debian vs... ? (was RE: powerbook and debian)

2004-01-22 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hi everybody,

This might be off-topic, but Yves started it :)

We're evaluating a professional platform that can run enterprise
applications. We need reliability, good threading, responsiveness,
stability, performance, but also easy management (if there's such a thing)
and good support.

Sadly, the rest of the team is completely going the RedHat way, because...
it's supported. They have a yearly maintenance fee to help you out to do
stuff. What this stuff is, I don't know, probably things that you don't know
if you're not a linux/RedHat export.

I am _definitely_ a debian fan and my gut feeling tells me it's better than
RH for sure. I really don't like the way RH charges you, the way it
installs, the way it's maintained... You get the idea.

So could anybody give serious reasons as to why RH is bad, Debian is better
? I've looked on Google but I didn't find a real serious report.

Thanks a lot !

Surely, the same reasons as installing Debian over any

What do you mean by video? I'm using my Dell C840 as a DVD player
when my wife "repasse" (I don't know the english word) and it works OK
plugged on my TV.

"repasse": Using a hot bi-parabolic then rectangular object trying to
plane some strange clothes.

tape backup ?

2004-05-25 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hello everybody,

Another random question for debian users on laptop.

The hard disk on my server/laptop has been working a lot for the past 3
years and I am now waking up in cold sweats during the middle of the night
because I didn't do any backup.

So here I am now, browsing for backup solutions, from Zip drives to DVD
burners or CD burners.

Here's what I want to do:
- the disk is rather small (< 10 GB) but I want to be able to do incremental
and full backups
- the media is not important. Tapes would be good I guess ? (they're cheap
and 'scratch resistant' as opposed to CDs)
- I don't have SCSI stuff.
- Some software should support it (I am running woody).
- USB would be great, speed is not important.
- CHEAP ! I can't spend $1000 bucks for the overall system.

I know I am asking for too much, but maybe someone has already thought about
it and can enlighten me on the possible solutions.

Thanks very much everybody !!

hdd defragmentation / e2defrag

2004-05-25 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hi again,

I also want to defrag my drive. When I ran e2defrag, it said the drive
should be unmounted (ok easy, I guess I'll need a bootdisk, I want to defrag
/dev/hda0) and also I'll have to run the bootloader configuration tool
because the image may have moved.

What does the latter part mean ? I thought the kernel image was just a file
and the bootloader lived in the MBR no matter what ? What is the magical
instruction to reconfigure lilo ? I don't want to screw the system up and
not be able to reboot (gasp).

Thanks !

RE: tape backup ?

2004-05-25 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hmmm didn't think about this. That's a great idea though. And how do I
restore the files now ? Say my HDD crashes, do I need to reinstall Debian
and then run a reverse rsync or something like this ?

Does rsync allow to backup an entire OS (including config files, special
files, links, etc...) ? I am really looking for something like 'ghost'... I
am not sure rsync cuts it. I'll do more searching though.

Thanks / Merci !

i'm not really sure if your question really belongs to debian-
laptop - but anyway, my solution also works with laptops :-)

have you already thought about external harddisks (usb 2.0 or firewire -
doesn't matter and depends on what you prefer).

> - the disk is rather small (< 10 GB) but I want to be able to do
> incremental and full backups

if you buy an external disk with let's say 250gb of space, you will be
able to keep 25 versions of your backup - enough for a version of each
month of a year as well as a version for the last 4 weeks and the last
7 days (or whatever your strategy is).

i'm doing my backup that way and i'm really happy about it (this means:
i didn't have any problems with it).
there are many ways for backing up your data to the disk - i do it using
a specialised shellscript which uses rsync. if you like you can have a
look at it on http://www.impressionet.ch/gurkeback/

> - the media is not important. Tapes would be good I guess ? (they're
cheap
> and 'scratch resistant' as opposed to CDs)

i don't know about where you live - but here in switzerland, good tapedrives
are quite expensive. also, tapes can fail due to moist, rough and long-
time usage or dust. also you're not that flexible if you need more space
later
(you can just buy a larger disk if you need more space). also, tapes tend
to be slow i think (except of course for really expensive material)

> - Some software should support it (I am running woody).
firewire disks are no problem at all and mountable as is a normal harddisk.
i don't know how well usb 2.0 disks work - i prefer firewire.

> - USB would be great, speed is not important.
speed is quite good with firewire/usb 2.0

> - CHEAP ! I can't spend $1000 bucks for the overall system.
here in switzerland you'll get a firewire-hd-case with included
power supply + a 250 gb hd for around 230-240 us-$. if you're paranoid
you can even buy a second one :-)

Hi. Not to put water on your fire, but a *nix system is inherently
different from a MS style one. Defraging is pretty much not needed
for two reasons.

First, files are written to a location on the disk where the file will
fit whole first, then in two pieces if the disk is really full, and
so on, so that fragmentation is a rare event and eventually self
correcting. Compare this to MS, where the first open sector is used
regardless of whether the file will fit. Fragmentation is the rule.

Second, Linux is a multi-task system where having your disk heads
flying around actually aids in accessing tasks, where the system can
recognize "Gee, the heads are close to that one, lets grab that first
then move over and get the rest." Opportunistic, as it were.

In closing, back in 1995 when I first asked this same question, the
folks at the time suggested that the hazards of running the defrag
far outweighed the possible minor benefits.

Good luck !

tape drives part 2

2004-07-06 Thread Provost, Stephane
Hello all,

I've already posted about this a few weeks ago. I recently lost a 60 GB hard
drive, so now, I'm really steering away from hard drives and going to tape
drives, when it's about backing up data. FYI, my server is a laptop running
debian, no SCSI, just USB.

I've seen Travan drives from Seagate, they're USB 2.0. The unit is cheap
($250) and tapes are pricey ($3.80/GB). Has anybody used this product ? Is
it good ? Anybody has tape drives for linux ? Would amanda do the job for
periodic backups ? Are there better alternatives ?

Thanks everybody !

Thanks Mark. I am thinking of using the USB version of the drive. Does it
mount just like another drive ? I thought amanda was a requirement, but it
seems like tar could do the job.

Thanks !
