Are you sure it loaded the appropriate module ? do a "lsmod" and see if there's anything that mentions your Nokia Cardphone thing. If not, you'll have to use insmod and find out which module to load...
As for using the ttyS interface, wouldn't minicom be a good place to start ? (I am not sure about this one :) ).
