Re: Yamaha Sound (Was ChemUSA/ASUS 7300)
True VERY true, I have Debian on a desktop and I was convinced the sound was horked. BUT NO. I just had to turn the sound WAYYY UP! I was interested in waht type of mixer software I could use to turn it up from teh PC prior to reaching the speakers. Ay other suggestions on mixer software? Re: unresolved symbols in pcmcia modules v3.1.6
I am running 2.2.13 on an older laptop and I had to recompile pcmcia After recompiling my kernel. I was getting similar errors to the ones you posted but once I upgraded to potato and recompiled pcmcia it works now. JJN (not as technical as the other answers sorry)
Re: floppy/ftp install anybody?
I have done this type of install multiple times at work with these old (non-cd) laptops I have laying around. I use the 9 disks (rescue, driver & 7 install) to get up to a 2.0 debian install with pcmcia NIC support. I then immediately do a potato upgrade and download the 2.2.13 kernel and recompile. Then I have to download and recompile the new pcmcia module. With that done I am free to add X and whatever else I want t fiddle with. If you want to keep slink then just do the disks install and once you can see the internet apt-get everything else you want or use dselect and point it to ftp as the install media as opposed to floppy or cd. Good luck JJN
Re: floppy/ftp install anybody?
Hmm. I have used both DHCP and an assigned IP. Normally I start with assigning an IP since it's easier to control. I'm not sure what you mean by script. When I get to the part to do dselect you just choose ftp and it will use your locations file (I think its location.choose or something to that effect-sorry no time to look it up) and will then query the location to find the file lists. Then when you update you get the newest list from the FTP site. I normally skip the dselect portion of the install until after I have the system running the base with an IP number on my network. Then I alter the locations file (check irc.debian.org #debian for the exact file name, also when the script runs through the install it will mention the file to alter) What to alter the file to can also be found on IRC. Again I apologize for the lack of complexity in my explanations I am not a programmer and new to Debian myself. JJN
Re: Bleh! win modem on my presario 1920
I really prefer an external (USR/3com) modem on my laptops AND desktops, but especially laptops. More flexibility, upgradeability and lots more o' abilities! You do have to put up with an extra cable and small box to carry with the laptop, I shudder to think what would happen if Linux supported WINmodems, Cats & dogs living together in sin will soon follow! Re: Fixing the Master Boot Record
Your problem sounds like the BIOS program. More than anything else. Try formatting a disk in a windows machine and making it bootable (format a: /s) then boot the laptop from it. If this works then download the BIOS update again and extract to the same disk. Also check to see if the extracted files create an Autoexec.bat that runs the BIOS update. Check the site you got the file from also they often have manual update procedures. JJN Network Administrator The Colad Group, Inc. "Bryan K. So, for the short term, I am taking some steps backwards. I downloaded a bios upgrade program on to a diskkette from IBM's website. To perform the upgrade, I need to boot up the computer with this diskette in the floppy drive. When I do that however, the computer gives me an error message saying that there is an invalid system disk in the floppy drive. I am instructed to remove it and then hit any key to continue. This doesn't happen with any disk as I can still boot up from a boot floppy. I think this is due to my installing LILO on the MBR. So I did an "fdisk /mbr" to remove LILO and then attempted to perform the bios upgrade again. I still get this error. So I then downloaded the upgrade program on to another diskette (in case the disk was the problem) and I still get this message. Can anyone tell me how can I fix my mbr so that I can boot up into this program and upgrade my BIOS? Thanks, Bryan Walton *** Bryan K. Re: Don't buy a Sony
I happen to have had some (insider) info into the tech support world of SONY and you are correct. The support stops for all practial purposes once the Vaio leaves the states. Having been one of those people that say "Hello, Thank you for calling Sony, this is **, how may I help you?" I personally will never buy a SONY VAIO SORRY off Debian topic but it hit home. TOSHIBA 400CDT I picked up in a junk pile at work. Any known problems/ workarounds to getting DEBIAN working on it. I'm going to install tonight if I get a chance, or tomorrow. TIA for any tips. JJN

IBM Credit Card Adapter and Toshiba
I just upgraded to 2.2.13 kernel and potato Debian. I can't get my IBM Credit Card adapter (NIC) to work. I am using a Toshiba 4000CDT. I show RX activity in ifconfig but no TX activity. Any hiints would be appreciated. Anyone using a similar setup (esp. the card). The card is getting detected at boot up as an NE2000 compatible at IRQ3 Add:0x300 It is a PCMICA card. TIA John J. Neff
pcmcia ethernet cards
I have a toshiba satellite 400CDT that I use an IBM PCMICA ethercard in. It was working in kernel 2.0.36. I upgraded to potato and it still worked. I then downloaded and reconfigured 2.2.13 kernel and the ethernet card stopped working. Can someone tell me if they have any specific troubles with ths card, laptop, kernel combination? I am getting some module (depmod) errors on bootup so I will be attacking those. I would hate to be fighting a losing battle though, so if you've discovered it does or does not work, the advice would be appreciated. John J. Neff
