I really prefer an external (USR/3com) modem on my laptops AND desktops, but especially laptops. More flexibility, upgradeability and lots more o' abilities!
You do have to put up with an extra cable and small box to carry with the laptop, I shudder to think what would happen if Linux supported WINmodems, Cats & dogs living together in sin will soon follow! JJN Network Admin
